Denmark to join Britain-US coalition against Houthis

The Houthis say their attacks are in support of Palestinians in the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza…reports Asian Lite News

Denmark said Thursday that it would join a Britain-US coalition that has carried out airstrikes against Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen who are behind a recent spate of attacks on ships in the Red Sea.

The Houthis say their attacks are in support of Palestinians in the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.

Washington and London have launched a series of strikes against Houthi positions to bring an end to the attacks that have caused shipping companies to bypass the Red Sea, significantly adding to journey times and cost.

“We have responded to the request for Denmark to take part in the coalition,” Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen told reporters.

He said Denmark would contribute an officer from its general staff who would take part in planning operations.

“This is a serious situation, one in which Denmark says it will also take political responsibility to bring an end to what is going on,” Poulsen said.

The Scandinavian country, which has previously said it would send a frigate to the region, is home to shipping giant Maersk, which has rerouted its ships away from the Red Sea.

In December, the Pentagon said 20 countries had joined the Washington-led coalition to protect the key shipping lane.

Denmark announces alliance on wind energy with India

WAI is demonstrative of activities under the Green Strategic Partnership signed in 2020 between India and Denmark, which seeks to deliver on both countries’ ambitious climate and sustainable energy goals…reports Asian Lite News

Denmark has announced its Wind Alliance India (WAI) initiative in a bid to boost collaborative efforts between the two countries in the sustainable energy solutions sector and advance their joint global goal towards net neutrality, informed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark.

This announcement by the Embassy of Denmark in India comes during the Windergy India 2023 summit in Chennai, in which Denmark is a Green Strategic Partner country.

WAI is a strategic initiative that aims to drive innovation, knowledge exchange, and investments to propel the growth of wind energy in India, promoting clean and renewable energy sources.

Leading Danish and Indian organisations including Vestas Wind Technology India Pvt Ltd, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, LAUTEC, Baettr India Pvt Ltd, The Confederation of Danish Industry, Danish Chamber of Commerce, Indo Danish Chamber of Commerce, Danish Energy Agency, Global Wind Energy Council, State of Green, and Indian Wind Turbines Manufacturing Association (IWTMA) are founding partners along with the Embassy of Denmark in India, the release added.

The initiative comes at an opportune time as India massively pushes towards achieving carbon neutrality by 2070. Meanwhile, Denmark is also on the path to reducing carbon emissions by 70 per cent by 2030 and achieving net neutrality by 2050, as per its Global Climate Action Strategy.

WAI is demonstrative of activities under the Green Strategic Partnership signed in 2020 between India and Denmark, which seeks to deliver on both countries’ ambitious climate and sustainable energy goals.

The Danish Ambassador to India Freddy Svane hopes that alliances like these will further boost our joint commitment for a greener planet, the release said.

“As the world goes green renewables become more and more important. India’s energy demand will triple in the near future, and all sources of energy must be harnessed. Wind is an important energy resource. Now it is time to get out of the present standstill. From repowering to near-shore and hopefully offshore. Nice words must be replaced with real action,” said Svane.

While positioning India as a strong market for investment in the wind energy sector, the WAI initiative will seek to foster collaboration between relevant Danish and Indian industries, businesses, government bodies, research institutions, and financial stakeholders.

Founding members including Vestas Wind Technology India Pvt Ltd foresee WAI as a promising platform for boosting India’s wind ambitions. (ANI)

Zelenskyy visits Netherlands, Denmark; hails pact on F-16 aircrafts

“The aim of this delivery is to protect Ukraine. We plan to provide the jets closer to the new year, about six of them, then eight in the next year and then another five,” CNN quoted her as saying…reports Asian Lite News

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy hailed the “historic” supply of F-16 aircraft by the Netherlands and Denmark which is expected to help Kyiv’s counteroffensive against Moscow, CNN reported on Sunday.

The Netherlands and Denmark will be providing Ukraine with long-anticipated F-16 aircraft after the US approved sending the aircraft to Kyiv allowing Ukrainian pilots to begin training on the fighter jets.

F-16s are single-engine, multi-role jet aircraft, meaning they can be used in air-to-air or ground-attack missions.

Notably, Kyiv has urgently been calling on its Western allies to provide F-16 jets, as its slow-moving counteroffensive is hampered by Russian air superiority, according to CNN.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Zelenskyy at Eindhoven airport in the Netherlands, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said that his country would “commit to delivering F-16 aircraft to Ukraine once the conditions for such a transfer have been met.”

Zelenskyy hailed the agreement as “historic” and “the most important” one yet.

“The Netherlands became the first country to agree to provide Ukraine with F-16s after training. I am very grateful,” CNN quoted him as saying.

He said that Ukraine would get 42 F-16 fighter jets after training for Ukrainian pilots and engineers is completed, according to his agreement with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, Kyiv Independent reported.

“And this is only the beginning,” Zelenskyy added.

He further ruled out any possibility of “giving away” Ukrainian territory in return for peace.

“Ukraine will not exchange its territory with Russia in a potential peace deal,” Kyiv Independent quoted Zelenskyy as saying at the press conference on Sunday.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said on August 20 that Ukraine would get 42 F-16 fighter jets after training for Ukrainian pilots and engineers is completed, according to his agreement with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte. “And this is only the beginning,” Zelensky added.

However, even with this agreement, it will take months until Ukraine will be able to use these jets.

Earlier on Sunday, the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed in a statement stated that it had agreed to provide F-16s. Conditions for the transfer include training Ukrainian personnel, setting up infrastructure and logistics, and receiving the necessary authorization, it said.

But, it is not clear yet how many aircraft will be provided by the Netherlands, CNN reported.

“At this moment, the Netherlands still owns 42 F-16s. Out of these 42, we need planes to help training in Denmark and later on in Romania,” Rutte said.

He added that the Netherlands would look into whether all of the remaining planes could be supplied but stated that he could not yet give a definitive number

After his visit to the Netherlands, Zelenskyy went to Denmark where he met Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.

“Today we announce that we will provide 19 F-16 jets to Ukraine, we believe Danish fighter jets will help protect your skies,” Frederiksen said.

“The aim of this delivery is to protect Ukraine. We plan to provide the jets closer to the new year, about six of them, then eight in the next year and then another five,” CNN quoted her as saying.

The meetings come after a US official on Friday said the US had committed to approving the transfer of F-16 fighter jets for Ukraine as soon as training is complete.

Ukraine’s Defence Minister Oleksii Reznikov said on Saturday that Ukrainian pilots had begun training.

Meanwhile, the US decision of approving the transfer of F-16s marks a sharp turnaround by the Biden administration, which for the last year had refused to approve any transfer of the aircraft or conduct training for fear that it could escalate tensions with Russia. The change indicates a new sense of urgency from Washington to get fighter jets to the battlefield as soon as possible, amid growing concerns about the prospects for Kyiv’s slow-going counteroffensive, according to Politico.

Last month, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned that Moscow will consider the supply of F-16s to Ukraine as “a threat from the West in the nuclear sphere” because of the jets’ ability to carry nuclear weapons. On Friday, he renewed the warning that in providing arms to Ukraine, the NATO allies risk entering “a situation of direct armed confrontation of nuclear powers,” Politico reported. (ANI)

Denmark to set up $1 bn aid for Ukraine

The aid will be three-pronged, with the biggest chunk being military aid of around 5.4 billion kroner in 2023…reports Asian Lite News

Denmark will set up a $1 billion fund for aid to Ukraine in 2023, the Danish government announced on Wednesday following agreement by almost all parties in parliament.

Western nations have pledged a steady flow of support to Ukraine since Russia’s invasion a year ago.

“The government has agreed to establish a fund for Ukraine with a total framework of around seven billion kroner ($1 billion) in 2023,” the finance ministry said in a statement, a project supported by 159 of 179 members of parliament.

Some development aid will be redirected to pay for the initiative, as well as an easing of financial policy.

The aid will be three-pronged, with the biggest chunk being military aid of around 5.4 billion kroner in 2023.

Civilian aid for humanitarian and long-term reconstruction efforts will receive around 1.2 billion kroner, while 400 million kroner will go to business initiatives.

“We can’t wait for the last shot to be fired,” Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen told reporters.

In addition, the government will allocate funds in 2024-2027 to cover the cost of replacing the military aid given to Ukraine in 2022 and 2023, the government said.

Meanwhile, British and German fighter jets scrambled to intercept two Russian aircraft flying close to Estonia in a joint NATO mission on Tuesday – hours after a Russian plane downed a US drone over the Black Sea – amid fears of an escalation in the region, media reports said.

The RAF and German Typhoon jets were reacting to a Russian air-to-air refuelling aircraft after it failed to communicate with Estonian air traffic control in the Baltic Sea, and as it approached NATO airspace.

The Russian Il-78 Midas plane was intercepted as it was flying between St Petersburg and Kaliningrad. The NATO jets were later redirected to also intercept a Russian Russian Antonov 148 military transport aircraft that was also passing close to Estonian air space, the RAF said in a release on Wednesday.

It was the first joint NATO air policing scramble carried out by the two countries, and comes amid a period of heightened tension in the region due to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine and his threats to Kyiv’s western allies.

Russia today warned it will “consider any action with US weaponry as openly hostile” after the incident involving the drone in international airspace on Tuesday, which also came as Danish investigators said they had found a “suspicious object” beneath the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, parts of which were mysteriously destroyed last year.

Denmark to hold early election in November

The country’s current Social Democratic minority government expects to remain in power as part of a ruling coalition…reports Asian Lite News

After months of speculation, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has finally called a general election in Denmark for November 1, 2022.

“I am proud of the accomplishments of this administration in less than three years. And now we’re asking for a new mandate on November 1,” she told journalists outside Marienborg, her official residence, on Wednesday.

“The government does not resign in conjunction with the announcement of the election,” a statement from her office said.

The country’s current Social Democratic minority government expects to remain in power as part of a ruling coalition.

“The time has come to test a new form of government in Denmark,” Frederiksen said.

“We are ready for both compromises and cooperation. We would like to put ourselves at the head of a broad government with parties from both sides of the political middle.”

The campaign, according to the Prime Minister, will be focused on “security,” and the most important political task now is to get Denmark through the crisis successfully.

“The 2022 parliamentary election will be a security election. Security for individuals, families, finances and daily life, as well as security for Denmark, Europe and the world,” she added.

The Danish Parliament is re-elected at least every four years. The most recent election took place on June 5, 2019.

The political parties will compete for 179 seats in the Folketing, or Danish Parliament: 175 in Denmark proper, two in the Faroe Islands and two in Greenland.

The “mink scandal,” which saw the country cull 17 million mink in late 2020, has cast a long shadow over the current administration since this July, when an independent panel reprimanded the minority government for its role but did not impeach it.

The Social Liberal Party, one of the government’s three supporters, demanded that Frederiksen call elections no later than when the new Parliament convenes in October, or face a no-confidence vote.
