A R Rahman’s directorial debut ‘Le Musk’ premiered at Cannes

Reporting on the 36-minute film shot in Rome, ‘Variety’ had said that it is billed as “a cinematic sensory experience incorporating virtual reality, with motion, music and scent integrated into the narrative”…reports Asian Lite News

Music maestro A.R. Rahman donned his debutant director’s hat, premiering his virtual reality film, “Le Musk”, at the Cannes Film Market’s Cannes XR programme, which focuses on cinematographic content that uses immersive technologies.

Taking to Instagram, the ‘Mozart of Madras’ shared a picture of people wearing AR/VR headsets watching the film sitting in their immersive VR chairs designed by the Los Angeles-based company Positron. The chairs integrate motion, scent, immersive sound and haptics, or technology that creates the experience of touch by applying forces, vibrations or motions to the user.

Soon after Rahman shared the post, two-time Grammy winner Ricky Kej reacted with the comment: “Oh wowwww … need to find this place asap!”

Reporting on the 36-minute film shot in Rome, ‘Variety’ had said that it is billed as “a cinematic sensory experience incorporating virtual reality, with motion, music and scent integrated into the narrative”.

It follows the heiress and musician Juliet Merdinian (played by Nora Arnezeder, previously seen in “Army of the Dead”), who, 20 years since she was orphaned, “seeks out the men who changed her destiny with one powerful memory — that of their scent”. The film’s cast also includes Guy Burnet (“Oppenheimer”), Munirih Grace (“Pure”), and Mariam Zohrabyan.

Rahman developed the story from an original idea by his wife Saira. “They share a love for perfume and wished to employ scent as a narrative device in immersive cinema,” ‘Variety’ had reported. Rahman directed from a screenplay by Gurachi Phoenix, besides composing the score.

“Le Musk”, according to ‘Variety’, features inter-disciplinary expertise coming together from around the world. “It was shot on 14 different cameras capturing super-resolution quality video. Post-produced in stereoscopic 360 VR workflow at higher resolution and frame rate, ‘Le Musk’ was finished by 10 VFX houses from around the world with close to a petabyte of data.”

One petabyte is the equivalent of one quadrillion bytes, or one million gigabytes.

Making people laugh is difficult, but Priyan always does it well

“It is not a continuation of ‘Hungama’. It is a different story treated in the same way as Hungama. There are confusions, situations, comedy of errors and slapstick but the plot is completely different. It will be a laugh riot, I believe,” Priydarshan speaks with Ahana Bhattacharya.

Filmmaker Priyadarshan is a favourite curator for both Bollywood and Mollywood. He has given a series of comedy hits with Akshay Kumar, so when the box-office wizard and National Award winner confirms a new film with the Bollywood superstar, fans would naturally be excited.

“Yes, it is happening next year. The film was supposed to happen this year but it had to be pushed. We start shooting next year,” the filmmaker told about his film with Akshay.

The duo has delivered rib-tickling comedies like “Hera Pheri”, “Garam Masala”, “Bhagam Bhag” and “Bhool Bhulaiyaa”, and elaborating on the new project, Priyadarshan said: “It will be a comedy film. I don’t want to take any more risks. Let me entertain my audience. So far, the films in which we both worked have been very successful.”

Before his film with Akshay, Priyan, as he is widely known to friends and colleagues, is busy readying his new film “Hungama 2” for release. The comedy features Paresh Rawal, Shilpa Shetty Kundra, Meezaan Jaffrey and Pranitha Subhash. The filmmaker clarifies the film is not an extension of his 2004 hit “Hungama”.

“It is not a continuation of ‘Hungama’. It is a different story treated in the same way as Hungama. There are confusions, situations, comedy of errors and slapstick but the plot is completely different. It will be a laugh riot, I believe,” he said.

Priyadarshan’s name is synonymous with entertaining comedy films. What are his secret ingredients?

“It is very difficult to make people laugh. It is the most difficult thing to create situations and confusions. Because, the moment it becomes buffoonery, the film will be in bad taste. It should look believable and genuine. Maintaining that balance is important,” he replied.

Just like many other films, “Hungama 2” is also releasing on an OTT platform instead of a theatrical release amid the ongoing pandemic. Would he miss the big screen experience?

“I wish I could release it in the theatres, sit with the audience and enjoy it. I belong to the old school. I have corrected myself by sitting with the crowd and watching my films, by observing what they like and what they don’t like. I am going to miss that learning process,” the filmmaker expressed, adding: “But even on OTT, everybody from the grandfather to the grandson can sit together and laugh. There is no vulgarity or double meaning in this film. It will be absolutely enjoyable. Comedy films are meant for mass viewing because laughter is contagious.”

With the pandemic affecting our lives in every possible way, is comedy the need of the hour for our emotional wellbeing?

“We know how the economy is affected, how people have lost their money, lost their jobs. How they are struggling not to go out and staying locked in their homes. What is there to smile about? In these times, I feel a comedy film can be a very good medicine,” the director said.

Pryadarshan, however, does not feel OTT platforms will replace cinema halls entirely.

“Definitely OTT is popular but films like Titanic, Baahubali or Avatar, which are meant for the big screen — you can’t watch these on your phone. You can’t enjoy the visuals. Another reason is, in our country, the cheapest entertainment for a common man, especially the middle class, is taking the family to the cinema. Also, the pleasure of going to the theatre with your friends and family, you cannot get that pleasure by sitting at home and watching the film on your phone. So, theatres will survive all over the world despite the great impact of OTT platforms,” he opined.

Priyadarshan’s new directorial “Hungama 2” is slated to release on Disney+ Hotstar on July 23.

Shraddha feels blessed to work with amazing people

The storyteller adds: “I met some wonderful people in the course of this show. I was blessed to have worked with amazing people. A few of them will remain with me forever.”…reports Asian Lite News.

Film making is a wonderful art that all people can’t succeed in. Filmmaker Shraddha Pasi Jairath’s recently-released web show “Chattis Aur Maina” revolves around ambitious Maina, lead of a dance troupe, and her neighbourhood good boy Chattis, and how their lives change when they start vibing on a dating app. The show stars Sandeepa Dhar and Vikram Singh Chauhan.

“They say you don’t take a shot (in films), you make a shot. It’s been a learning experience so far, from graduating at FTII Pune to working with stalwart directors. Each and every project teaches you what to do and what not to do. Personally, ‘Chattis Aur Maina’ has been close to me. I got an opportunity to do a lot of stuff from dance to romance to drama to holding scenes with a large number of actors in one frame,” she says.

The storyteller adds: “I met some wonderful people in the course of this show. I was blessed to have worked with amazing people. A few of them will remain with me forever.”

Shraddha has worked with directors like Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Pradeep Sarkar, Vikas Bahl, Maneesh Sharma, Ram Madhvani and Yash Raj Films in the past. She was the assistant director in films and television shows like “Mahi Way”, “Khotey Sikke” and films like “Mujhse Fraandship Karoge”, “Shudh Desi Romance”, “Mardaani” and “Shaandaar”.

‘Storytellers want maximum eyeballs’

Dibakar’s film brings back Arjun Kapoor and Parineeti Chopra on the silver screen after almost three years. The actor first worked together in the 2012 film “Ishaqzaade” and later worked together in “Namaste England” (2018)…writes Yashika Mathur.

Filmmaker Dibakar Banerjee’s new film “Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar” opens today. He feels be it OTT or theatres, storytellers want maximum eyeballs for their projects.

Commenting on whether OTT has now cemented its place in the audience mindset, Dibakar tells : “I think even theatrical producers and directors are deeply cementing their product to what their audience wants to see, so we all want the maximum number of eyes to see us and give us money, fame and power. There is no difference. Therefore, all of us keep an eye out for what the audience wants to see to a lesser or larger extent. In my case, when I want to tell the audience a story, I tell it my way and hope that I can convert more and more people to my way of thinking.”

Dibakar’s film brings back Arjun Kapoor and Parineeti Chopra on the silver screen after almost three years. The actor first worked together in the 2012 film “Ishaqzaade” and later worked together in “Namaste England” (2018).

Does it become easy to direct co-stars who have worked together earlier? “It doesn’t matter,” says Dibakar, adding: “It depends on the script, on the energy of the actors, on that film and the energy of the director, and that is all that matters. It doesn’t even matter if they have worked together in 15 films.”

Arjun and Parineeti are known to share a good rapport off-screen. However, Dibakar had to change that situation. “I was trying to break their rapport because in the film I wanted them to be adversaries. So all my attempts went into them not meeting or hanging around with each other!” says the director.
