‘Over 470 Ukrainian drones destroyed during special ops’

Eighteen people have been killed and more than 100 wounded in shelling in the past four days in the northeastern city of Kharkiv, Zelensky said…reports Asian Lite News

The Russian forces have eliminated more than 470 Ukrainian drones since the start of the special military operation in Ukraine, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said.

“In total, since the beginning of the special military operation, the following have been destroyed: 136 aircraft, 471 unmanned aerial vehicles, 249 anti-aircraft missile systems, 2,308 tanks and other armored combat vehicles, 254 multiple launch rocket systems, 998 field artillery guns and mortars, and 2,171 special military vehicles,” Konashenkov said on Sunday.

He added that Russian rocket forces and artillery have hit four Ukrainian command posts, four artillery batteries, two fuel depots and more than 100 other Ukrainian targets.

Russia launched its special military operation in Ukraine on February 24, after the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR) appealed for help in defending themselves against Ukrainian provocations. Russia said that the aim of its special operation is to demilitarize and “denazify” Ukraine and that only military infrastructure is being targeted.

Zelensky lashed out at Russia

With the war having entered the 54th day, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky lashed out at Russia for “deliberate terror against ordinary civilians” as Moscow continued shelling in the northeastern cities and escalated aggression in the besieged city of Mariupol. He also accused the Russian troops in southern Ukraine of carrying out torture and kidnappings.

“This is nothing but deliberate terror: mortars, artillery against ordinary residential quarters… against ordinary civilians,” Zelensky said late in his nightly address, according to multiple reports. “Torture chambers are built there. They abduct representatives of local governments and anyone deemed visible to local communities,” he added.

Eighteen people have been killed and more than 100 wounded in shelling in the past four days in the northeastern city of Kharkiv, Zelensky said.

The Kremlin has denied targeting civilians and accused Ukraine of “staging the evidence of atrocities in a bid to undermine peace talks”.

Moscow has said its troops had cleared the urban area of Mariupol and only a small contingent of Ukrainian fighters remained inside a steelworks in the besieged southern port. Mariupol, on the Sea of Azov in southeastern Ukraine, has seen the worst fighting of the seven-week-long war.

Russia also issued an ultimatum to Ukraine, giving its troops in Mariupol a deadline to surrender, which was ultimately rejected by Ukraine as it vowed to ‘fight till the end’.

On the streets of Mariupol, small groups of bodies were lined up under colourful blankets, surrounded by shredded trees and scorched buildings, Reuters reported.

Zelensky told Ukrainian media on Saturday that the continuing siege of Mariupol could ruin attempts to negotiate an end to the war. “The destruction of all our guys in Mariupol — what they are doing now — can put an end to any format of negotiations,” he was quoted as saying by news agency AP.

After failing to overcome Ukrainian resistance in the north, the Russian military has refocused its ground offensive on Donbas, while launching long-distance strikes at targets elsewhere, including the capital, Kyiv.

Govt focus on drone technology to boost agritech startups

It is estimated that there are about 600-700 agritech startups in India (IT industry’s apex body Nasscom last reported 450 in India two years ago) operating at different levels of agri-value chains…reports Asian Lite News

Not only for creating light shows as seen during the Beating Retreat ceremony, the government now focuses on drone technology to empower agritech startups, along with creating a skilled workforce for that via various Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs).

In her Union Budget speech, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that startups will be promoted to facilitate ‘Drone Shakti’ through varied applications and for Drone-As-A-Service (DrAAS).

“In select ITIs, in all states, the required courses for skilling will be started,” she added.

Drone technology is an integral part of several agri-tech startups as these are used for crop assessment, digitisation of land records, spraying of insecticides and nutrients.

Filling the skill gap in this area is a revolutionary step for an agriculture-dominated country like ours, experts say.

It is estimated that there are about 600-700 agritech startups in India (IT industry’s apex body Nasscom last reported 450 in India two years ago) operating at different levels of agri-value chains.

Sushma Paul Berlia, Chairperson, National Council on Ease of Doing Business at Assocham, said that “virtual education as a tool towards filling the gap took place due to the pandemic in the last two years” and it is heartening to ensure minimum quality education is available to all – whether through skilling portals or “skilling courses through various ITIs”.

ITIs starting skilling courses is welcome for low-end skills.

“Polytechnics are the right place to start offering skill courses especially as skills of tomorrow are of a higher order. Polytechnics should also be allowed to offer advanced skill programmes,” said Chocko Valliappa, Vice Chairman, Sona Group of Education institutions.

Vipul Singh, Founder and CEO, Aarav Unmanned Systems (AUS), said that the budget duly recognises the key role drone technology is playing in solving some really tough problems for sectors like land records, infrastructure, mining, disaster management, and agriculture.

“Furthermore, the announcement of Drone Rules 2021, the PLI scheme for the drone industry, and subsidies for drones to be used for agriculture applications have provided a fillip to the sector,” he said.

With the use of use of drones for land surveys and crop assessments, the government “seeks to leverage technology for enabling the next phase of sustainable socio-economic development of the nation”, said Nitin Bansal, MD, India Head-Networks, Market Area South East Asia, Oceania and India, Ericsson.

The budget has covered multiple avenues for drone industry to rise, especially “promoting agricultural drones and NABARD fund to support startups will result in ensuring that the drone industry reach a new milestone”, said Swapnik Jakkampudi, Co-Founder, Skye Air Mobility, a drone delivery tech firm.

‘NSG Capable of Handling Drone Warfare’

In light of the drone attacks on Jammu airport recently, the Counter terrorism Commando forces of NSG, equipped with anti-drone technology, been deployed at the Jammu and Srinagar airports to provide anti-drone cover to these vital installations, reports Asian Lite News

National Security Guard (NSG) DG M.A. Ganapathi on Saturday said that drone warfare is a new challenge and the NSG is fully capable to handle it.

He was speaking on the sidelines of the 37th foundation day event of the NSG, in Manesar (Gurugram), on Saturday.

“Every security force needs to upgrade counter drone technology. Drones are an easy way to create mischief, to drop bombs and payload like weapons and ammunition,” he said.

Earlier, speaking at the 37th foundation day of the NSG, the DG said that the NSG has been upgrading itself to the new security challenges and in the last few years, many initiatives have been taken to strengthen the counter terror measures.

“To effectively deal with drone attacks, the Force is now equipped with counter drone equipment, radar, jammers and drone killing guns”, Ganapathi said.

Referring to the upgradation of the force in the last one year, he further said that in light of the drone attacks on Jammu airport recently, the Counter terrorism Commando forces of NSG, equipped with anti-drone technology, been deployed at the Jammu and Srinagar airports to provide anti-drone cover to these vital installations.

The force has also destroyed the IEDs and tiffin box bombs sent across the border through drones in Amritsar in Punjab, he added.

The NSG DG further said that the Force has been equipped with modern weapons and equipment and also strengthened the infrastructural setups across the country and indoor shooting ranges have been established in Manesar, Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Kolkata.

With an aim to increase the efficiency of the bomb disposal squads, mini-remotely operated vehicles, total containment vehicles, and robots have been added to the force, he added.

He also said that to deal with multiple attacks at multiple locations at the same time, the Gandiv 3 mock exercise was conducted last month and in coordination with all agencies, and forces were dispatched to Bhopal, Ahmedabad from Delhi for this exercise.

Ganapathi also said that NSG’s Close Protection Force has provided security to the VVIPs in over 4,600 events in the last one year despite Covid-19 restrictions and also provided security to the VVIPs in over 260 public gatherings and road shows during the last assembly elections.

He also said all NSG personnel have been fully vaccinated for Covid-19 and a 60 bedded hospital has been set up at NSG campus here with its own resources.

ICMR gets nod for using drones from Civil Aviation Ministry

The ICMR has got the permission for conducting experimental Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) vaccine delivery in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Manipur, and Nagaland…reports Asian Lite News

The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) and Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) have granted conditional exemption from Drone Rules, 2021 to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B).

The ICMR has got the permission for conducting experimental Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) vaccine delivery in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Manipur, and Nagaland upto a height of 3000 meters using drones. The IIT-B has received permission for research, development and testing of drones in its own premises.

This exemption to the ICMR shall be subject to the terms and conditions of the said airspace clearance and shall be valid for a period of one year from the date of approval of the said airspace clearance or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Earlier, Union Minister for Civil Aviation Jyotiraditya Scindia had launched the first of its kind ‘Medicines from the Sky’ project at Vikarabad in Telangana under which drugs and vaccines were to be delivered using drones on September 11.

“The ministry’s new drone rules have unlocked the drone industry and the innovation therein on the principles of trust, self-certification, and non-intrusive monitoring. Drones is a frontier technology that can be used to access the otherwise inaccessible areas, and thus allow equitable access to basic services like healthcare for even the farthest and remotest of areas. India is all set to become the drone hub of the world by 2030, and the potential of our innovators is only infinite,” said Scindia while launching the ‘Medicines from the Sky’ project.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation notified the liberalised Drone Rules, 2021 to usher in an era of super-normal growth while balancing safety and security considerations in drone operations on August 25, 2021.

High alert in TN, Kerala on possible drone intrusions

After the Chinese take over of Hambanthota port in Sri Lanka, the coast guard and Indian Navy intelligence has been on high alert over the coastal areas…reports Asian Lite News

The Central intelligence agencies are on high alert in Tamil Nadu and Kerala after the twin drone attack at Air force’ technical airport in Jammu on June 27, damaging the airport and inflicting minor injuries to a couple of soldiers.

Central agencies, according to highly placed sources have tipped the police of both Tamil Nadu and Kerala to be alert and to be prepared for intrusions into the states with certain terror groups exploring the possibilities of using drones.

After the Chinese take over of Hambanthota port in Sri Lanka, the coast guard and Indian Navy intelligence has been on high alert over the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu and in southern belts of Kerala.

While the security agencies were able to foil the drone attacks in the Jammu area, the cost of intercepting these drones is high and several states are ill-equipped with this technology. Already defense establishment has opened discussions with the Israeli defense establishments for the supply of high-end drone interceptors as Israel is the global leader in this technology.

The intelligence agencies have warned the Tamil Nadu and Kerala governments and security agencies of these states as, according to sources, the agencies received tips of certain terror outfits from across the border preparing themselves for such attacks. Even as India has opened backchannel discussions or Track 2 diplomacy with the Taliban fighters of Afghanisthan following the systematic withdrawal of US forces from that country, the intelligence agencies are not leaving any chances and have recommended the southern states to be on high alert.

The sea coast of Kerala and Tamil Nadu has been on the intelligence radar for a few months and with the drone attack in Jammu, the agencies have intensified the surveillance in these two states.

It may be noted that the intelligence agencies have warned of certain homegrown terror movements in both these states and the large exodus of terrorists to Syria and Afghanistan from Kerala had led the central agencies to be on high alert. The presence of organisations like Al-Umma and its activities in districts like Coimbatore, Trichy, Kanyakumari, and other southern districts of Tamil Nadu has also been closely monitored by the central agencies.

The ascend of DMK government in Tamil Nadu has fanned the ultra Tamil movements of the state and several pro-LTTE organisations have issued statements and the demand for the release of the convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case has also become louder and Tamil Nadu chief minister M.K. Stalin has already written a letter to the President of India for the pardon of these convicts.

Taking these factors into consideration, the agencies do not want to take any chances and to be prepared for any eventuality and several individuals and organisations – even paper organisations are under the radar.
