xAI, Musk’s Startup, Eyes $1B Funding

This marks the first publicly known fundraising round for Musk’s AI startup…reports Asian Lite News

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence venture, xAI, has recently disclosed its intention to secure up to a billion dollars in funding, as indicated in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Fox Business reported.

The filing on Tuesday by X.AI Corp (dba xAI) outlined a plan to raise USD 1 billion in an equity offering, with more than USD 134 million already successfully raised. The document revealed that the company had entered into a binding agreement for the sale and purchase of the remaining USD 865 million.

Responding to a post by Gene Munster of Deepwater Asset Management on the financing, Elon Musk clarified on Wednesday, saying, “We are not raising money right now.” Munster’s post suggested that Musk’s fundraising efforts were aimed at competing with OpenAI and Anthropic.

According to a source cited by the New York Post, xAI is “raising money at a valuation that will likely be between $4 billion and $10 billion,” adding that the revelation is the first known fundraising round for Musk’s start-up.

This marks the first publicly known fundraising round for Musk’s AI startup, according to Fox Business.

Govt goes bullish on startups with ESOP holiday, tax relief.

The filing follows Musk’s announcement a month ago that xAI’s “Grok” chatbot, designed to rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard, had entered the beta testing phase.

Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015 and resigned from its board in 2018, launched xAI to compete with ChatGPT and other major players in the AI domain. He has been outspoken about his concerns regarding what he perceives as censorship in Big Tech firms’ AI initiatives and has expressed his intent to develop a truth-seeking AI that seeks to understand the universe.

Since its inception in July, xAI has attracted talent from notable AI research firms such as Google’s DeepMind unit and Microsoft.

Musk, also the CEO of Tesla and the proprietor of the X social media platform, clarified that xAI and the X social media platform are distinct entities, despite working closely together. xAI is actively collaborating with Tesla in addition to its interaction with the X social media platform, Fox Business reported. Apple, Disney Halt Ads On X After Musk’s ‘Antisemitic’ Post

Several major advertisers have announced they are cutting off their spending on microblogging site X after Elon Musk’s post on social media platform endorsing antisemitic conspiracy theory, The New York Times reported.

Disney said it was halting spending on X. Similarly, Lionsgate, the entertainment and film distribution company, and Paramount Global, the media giant that owns CBS announced they are pausing spending on X.

Apple, which spends tens of millions of dollars a year on X, also announced suspension of advertising on X, The New York Times reported citing a person with knowledge of the situation. On Thursday, IBM announced that it will cut its spending on X.

The decision of companies comes after Musk agreed with a post that said Jewish people who are facing antisemitism amid the Israel-Hamas war of pushing the “exact kind of dialectical hatred against whites that they claim to want people to stop using against them” and supporting the immigration of “hordes of minorities.” Musk responded, “You have said the actual truth.”

On Friday, the White House condemned Elon Musk for boosting the anti-Jewish conspiracy theory, calling it “unacceptable,” The New York Times reported.

In a statement, White House spokesperson Andrew Bates said that it was “unacceptable to repeat the hideous lie behind the most fatal act of antisemitism in American history at any time, let alone one month after the deadliest day for the Jewish people since the Holocaust.”

X’s chief executive, Linda Yaccarino in a statement shared on the site on Thursday said that the company had been “extremely clear about our efforts to combat antisemitism and discrimination.” However, on Friday, Musk agreed with a post on X.

He later said that accounts that made “clear calls for extreme violence” would be suspended. In a post shared on X, Musk stated, “As I said earlier this week, “decolonization”, “from the river to the sea” and similar euphemisms necessarily imply genocide. Clear calls for extreme violence are against our terms of service and will result in suspension.”

Advertisers have become apprehensive about X since Musk purchased X and said he wanted more free sp0eech and would loosen content moderation rules, which implied that the social media platform could theoretically place brands’ ads next to posts with offensive or hateful speech.

Many companies, including General Motors and Volkswagen, have balked several times over the past year at having their promotions appear alongside a documented surge in hate speech, misinformation and foreign propaganda on X, The New York Times reported.

In April, Elon Musk announced that nearly all advertisers had returned on the platform, without revealing whether they were spending at the same levels. He later said that the ad revenue had reduced by 50 per cent. (ANI)

Musk to sue non-profit Media Matters

Elon Musk on Saturday said X will file a “thermonuclear lawsuit” against non-profit organisation Media Matters and those who “colluded in this fraudulent attack on our company,” as big advertisers like Apple, Disney, Warner Bros, IBM and others reportedly paused advertising on the platform for allegedly promote antisemitism.

Media Matters in its report had claimed that as Musk continues his descent into white nationalist and antisemitic conspiracy theories, his social media platform has been placing ads for major brands like Apple, Bravo (NBCUniversal), IBM, Oracle, and Xfinity (Comcast) next to content that supports Adolf Hitler and his Nazi Party.

The report led to tech and media majors like Apple, IBM, Disney, Warner Bros, Discovery, Paramount and Comcast/NBCUniversal reportedly pulling or halting their advertisements, along with Lionsgate and European Commission, on X.

The billionaire X owner posted: “The split second court opens on Monday, X Corp will be filing a thermonuclear lawsuit against Media Matters and ALL those who colluded in this fraudulent attack on our company.”

“Their board, their donors, their network of dark money, all of them,” he added.

Musk also posted a letter, defending his company and slamming Media Matters report and legacy media organisation.

“Despite our clear and consistent position, X has seen a number of attacks from activist groups like Media Matters and legacy media outlets who seek to undermine freedom of expression on our platform because they perceive it as a threat to their ideological narrative and those of their financial supporters,” the letter read.

The letter alleged that these groups try to use their influence to attack “our revenue streams by deceiving advertisers on X”.

“To manipulate the public and advertisers, Media Matters created an alternate account and curated the posts and advertising appearing on the account’s timeline to misinform advertisers about the placement of their posts,” the letter argued.

Earlier on Saturday, Musk posted: “Media Matters is pure evil.”

X CEO Linda Yaccarino said that their point of view has always been very clear that discrimination by everyone should stop across the board.

“When it comes to this platform — X has also been extremely clear about our efforts to combat antisemitism and discrimination. There’s no place for it anywhere in the world — it’s ugly and wrong. Full stop,” she posted.

Xi received standing ovations from more than 300 corporate leaders and top officials, including Cook and Blackstone’s Steve Schwarzman.

From Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk to Apple chief Tim Cook, top tech honchos and corporate leaders met Chinese President Xi Jinping during a gala dinner here during his state visit.

Xi received standing ovations from more than 300 corporate leaders and top officials, including Cook and Blackstone’s Steve Schwarzman.

Musk on Friday posted his photo with the Chinese President on X, saying, “May there be prosperity for all”.

The gala dinner was hosted by the US-China Business Council and the National Committee on US-China Relations.

“Whatever stage of development it may reach, China will never pursue hegemony or expansion, and will never impose its will on others,” the President told the gathering.

Earlier, US President Joe Biden told his Chinese counterpart that they should keep their communications lines open and get to understand each other so as “to ensure that competition (between their countries) does not veer into conflict”.

Xi reiterated his opposition to describing the relationship as competition saying it “is not the prevailing trend of current times”.

Biden said that the US is not trying to “decouple” from China, but pursuing better relations with its assertive rival.

Xi arrived in San Francisco this week for a summit with Biden, and to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting.

Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Electronics and IT on Thursday met Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk during inaugural AI Safety Summit in the UK.

A Bumpy Ride: Musk’s First Year as X Owner

After the acquisition, Musk laid off more than 80 per cent of 7,500-strong Twitter staff, including its Indian-origin CEO Parag Agrawal, and even dissolved the trust and safety council….reports Asian Lite News

Elon Musk acquired Twitter for $44 billion in October last year after a months-long tumultuous phase.

One year on, controversies associated with the platform (now called X), amid the non-stop spread of disinformation, is far from over.

From a surge in anti-semitic tweets that more than doubled over the months since Musk took charge to the European Commission formally opening a probe into X over spreading of illegal content and disinformation, the Twitter bird is yet to be freed.

On October 26, 2022 as he bought Twitter, Musk arrived at the company’s headquarters in San Francisco carrying a bathroom sink, while sharing a post: “Let that sink in!”

After the acquisition, Musk laid off more than 80 per cent of 7,500-strong Twitter staff, including its Indian-origin CEO Parag Agrawal, and even dissolved the trust and safety council.

Earlier this month, reports surfaced that Agrawal, former policy lead Vijaya Gadde and other executives finally won $1.1 million in legal fees from the Musk-run company.

In November last year, he said that “people have spoken and former US president Donald Trump will be reinstated” on Twitter.

In August this year, Trump signalled his return by posting his mugshot from Fulton County Jail in the US on charges of election interference.

Musk retweeted his post, saying “Next-level”.

In February, amid reports that Twitter was losing $4 million a day, the tech billionaire said that the platform will soon share ad revenue with creators for ads that appear in their reply threads.

The social media platform finally started paying creators in July for a share of the ad revenue they earned from ads served in the replies to their posts to other verified users.

Last month, X CEO Linda Yaccarino revealed that the platform paid nearly $20 million (more than Rs 166 crore) to creators.

In April, Twitter announced it would remove the verification badge from the legacy accounts to promote its Twitter Blue subscription.

It now charges $8 a month from verified users, and is soon launching other paid membership tiers.

In June, Musk created a sensation by posting that he is up for a cage match with Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg — a fight that never took place.

Zuckerberg later launched a competitor to Twitter called Threads on Instagram.

In July, Twitter announced a name change to X.com, to make the platform an “everything app” from live-streaming events and movies, live sports, digital payments and more.

“Twitter was acquired by X Corp both to ensure freedom of speech and as an accelerant for X, the everything app,” said Musk.

This month, the European Commission opened an investigation into the X owner Musk over an alleged spreading of illegal content and disinformation, in particular, the spreading of terrorist and violent content and hate speech in the wake of an ongoing Israel-Hamas war.

Yaccarino responded, saying the company is actively working with partners, governments, regulators and policymakers to combat misinformation.

Last week, a new study claimed that verified users with Blue badges are the ones spreading the vast majority of misinformation about the Israel-Hamas war on X.

During the first week of the conflict (October 7-14), US-based for-profit organisation NewsGuard analysed the 250 most-engaged posts (likes, reposts, replies, and bookmarks) that promoted one of 10 prominent false or unsubstantiated narratives relating to the war.

The results revealed that 186 out of these 250 posts — 74 per cent — were posted by accounts verified by X.

X Corp lost over half a billion user visits last month, and the platform dropped to seventh place on the global ranking, behind Instagram, according to new SimilarWeb data.

After Musk, EU warns Zuckerberg to remove pro-Hamas content

European Commissioner Thierry Breton urged Meta to remove illegal terrorist content and hate speech amid the ongoing war in Israel….reports Asian Lite News

After warning X owner Elon Musk, European Commissioner Thierry Breton has now written to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, telling him to remove pro-Hamas content across his platforms and “be very vigilant” else it could put the company in violation of new EU regulations.

In a letter to Zuckerberg, Breton urged Meta to remove illegal terrorist content and hate speech amid the ongoing war in Israel.

He said that the European Commission had seen “a surge of illegal content and disinformation being disseminated in the EU.”

“I urgently invite you to ensure that your systems are effective. Needless to say, I also expect you to be in contact with the relevant law enforcement authorities and Europol, and ensure that you respond promptly to any requests,” he noted.

Breton asked that Zuckerberg respond to the European Union’s (EU) concerns within the next 24 hours.

“I would ask you to be very vigilant to ensure strict compliance with the digital services act (DSA) rules on terms of service, on the requirement of timely, diligent and objective action following notices of illegal content in the EU, and on the need for proportionate and effective mitigation measures.”

In a statement, a Meta spokesperson said the company has created a “special operations center with experts, including fluent in Hebrew and Arabic speakers” after the Hamas attacks on Israel.

“Our teams are working around the clock to keep our platforms safe, take action on content that violates our policies or local law, and coordinate with third-party fact checkers in the region to limit the spread of misinformation. We’ll continue this work as this conflict unfolds,” said the spokesperson.

Thierry Breton

Earlier, the EU commissioner warned Tesla and SpaceX CEO, saying that his X platform “is being used to disseminate illegal content and disinformation in the EU” after the Hamas attacks in Israel.

In a letter addressed to Musk, Breton had said that following the “terrorist attacks carried out by Hamas against Israel”, they have indications that “your platform is being used to disseminate illegal content and disinformation in the EU”.

Responding to Breton, Musk asked him to flag the violative content publicly on X, writing that the company takes its “actions in the open”.

Breton replied saying: “You are well aware of your users’ — and authorities’ — reports on fake content and glorification of violence.”

“I still don’t know what they’re talking about!” Musk said.

‘India Needs ‘Musks’ In Space Sector’

Somnath called for industry leaders in the space sector, akin to Elon Musk, to invest in India…reports Asian Lite News

Exhorting greater private sector participation in the Indian space sector, ISRO chief S. Somnath on Wednesday said that’ just like Elon Musk in US more industry people should come and invest in it here’.

Addressing AIMA’s annual convention in the national capital, Somnath said, “We want to see more industry people in the space sector. Just like Elon Musk is there in the US, we need somebody like him to invest here. Though it’s not an easy sector and is an unforgiving domain. It requires personal passion… Failures will be there. So my advice will be to start in the applications segment, like ground equipment manufacturing.”

“Our aim is to see greater manufacturing of space equipment in India. Though several equipment are made in the country, it is the electronics domain where challenges remain, like in sourcing components for building rockets like ceramics and integrated chips. For this we need more industry support,” he noted further.

War provides thrust to India’s space sector, opens up new opportunities

Somnath informed that unlike earlier times, when space research was mainly dependent on government support, now the private sector is gradually increasing its footprint in the space sector.

“Now private companies can build and launch satellites on their own, even outside ISRO. It’s a great opportunity,” he said.

The ISRO chief further informed that through public private partnership and other modes of collaboration with the private sector, their participation is being facilitated in the space sector.

Cost effectiveness in rocket designing is being worked out so that private entities can come and design rockets, Somnath informed.

“Currently there are 53 satellites, but at least 500 are needed if we want to be globally competitive in the space sector. Before the Chandrayaan-3 mission’s launch, NASA scientists reviewed our components and were surprised by their cost effectiveness. They showed keenness in purchasing from us. Sourcing components is a major challenge for India. Work is going on to ease restrictions and make American components available to Indian companies,” he said.

Indian-Origin CEOs impress Musk

By holding top positions, the Indian-origin people are earning millions of dollars which puts them among the highest paid CEOs in the US….reports Asian Lite News

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk is impressed at the way Indian-origin people have taken over as CEOs of most of the top tech companies, as well as some of the non-tech organisations, and the list is only growing.

By holding top positions, the Indian-origin people are earning millions of dollars which puts them among the highest paid CEOs in the US.

When the World of Statistics posted on X (formerly Twitter) the list of Indian-origin people at top companies, Musk reacted late on Saturday: “Impressive”.

His followers reacted, saying “Indians are some of the hardest working people”.

India is even the “CEO of Moon’s South Pole,” a Musk follower chuckled, after the country successfully landed its Chandrayaan-3 Moon mission.

Currently, Sanjay Mehrotra is the CEO of Micron Technology; Shantanu Narayen is the CEO of Adobe; Satya Nadella is Chairman and CEO of Microsoft; Sunder Pichai is the CEO of Alphabet and Google; Jay Chaudhry is the CEO of Zscaler which is a cloud security company; Arvind Krishna is the CEO of IBM; Neal Mohan is the CEO of YouTube; and George Kurian is the CEO of NetApp, among the top tech giants.

Leena Nair broke all barriers by becoming the first ever Indian-origin global CEO of French luxury fashion house, Chanel. While Laxman Narasimhan is the CEO of Starbucks, Amrapali ‘Ami’ Gan became the CEO of adult entertainment platform OnlyFans (before stepping down in July this year).

Anjali Sud is the CEO of Vimeo, the online video platform and Rangarajan Raghuram is the CEO of VMware.

Meanwhile, Musk is looking forward to visiting India next year, as he plans to establish a Tesla supply chain ecosystem in the country.

Elon Musk Unveils Live video feature for X

Musk tested a live option and shared a hilarious video featuring himself and his teammates….reports Asian Lite News

After introducing a feature to hide the Blue tick, X CEO Elon Musk has come up with a Live video feature.

Taking to Twitter, Musk updated fans with the new option and tweeted, “Live video now works reasonably well. Just tap the button that looks like a camera when you post.”

He also tested a live option and shared a hilarious video featuring himself and his teammates.

He also flaunted his dumbbell and weight-lifting skills.

On Thursday,  X CEO introduced a new feature to hide the Blue tick.

According to the Help page of the micro-blogging site, one of the features reads, “Hide your checkmark: As a subscriber, you can choose to hide your checkmark on your account. The check mark will be hidden on your profile and posts. The checkmark may still appear in some places and some features could still reveal you have an active subscription. Some features may not be available while your checkmark is hidden. We will continue to evolve this feature to make it better for you.”

As per the Mashable website report, for subscribers to Twitter Blue, the “Hide your blue checkmark” option is visible in the “Profile Customization” page in your Account Settings.

Twitter first introduced the blue check mark system in 2009 to help users identify celebrities, politicians, companies, brands, news organizations and other accounts “of public interest” as genuine and not impostors or parody accounts. The company didn’t previously charge for verification.

Musk launched Twitter Blue with the check-mark badge as one of the premium perks within two weeks of the company’s takeover last year.

On April 1, Twitter removed blue ticks from verified accounts, following the implementation of paid subscription service which charges USD 8 for a blue verification badge on the microblogging site. (ANI)

Musk-Zuckerberg cage fight ‘cancelled’, says Maye Musk

In a series of tweets, Maye Musk said that it is a “great relief” that “the fight has now been cancelled”….reports Asian Lite News

Dubbed as the fight of the century, the anticipated showdown between Elon Musk and Meta Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has apparently been cancelled, the Tesla CEO’s mother Maye Musk said on Friday.

Musk earlier tweeted that he would be “up for a cage match” with Zuckerberg, to which Meta founder posted a screenshot of Musk’s tweet with the caption “send me location”.

Controversial online influencer Andrew Tate had offered to train Musk, seeking revenge against Meta for banning him from their platforms.

In a series of tweets, Maye Musk said that it is a “great relief” that “the fight has now been cancelled”.

“Actually, I cancelled the fight. I haven’t told them yet. But I will continue to say the fight is cancelled, just in case,” she further posted.

Lex Fridman, the host of the famous Lex Fridman Podcast, said, “A jiu jitsu match between Zuck and Elon would definitely be a fun plot twist in this simulation. I’m all for it.”

Musk replied: “Let’s go full MMA (mixed martial arts)”.

Maye Musk intervened, saying “don’t encourage this match” and his tech billionaire son was seen with a “crying” emoji.

Her tweets came as a surprise to social media users who were expecting at least a few bouts between the two tech billionaires.

It all started when Musk replied to a tweet about news that Meta will release a Twitter competitor.

“I’m sure Earth can’t wait to be exclusively under Zuck’s thumb with no other options. At least it will be ‘sane’. Was worried there for a moment,” Musk said.

To this, a user replied, “Better be careful @elonmusk I heard he does the jiu jitsu now.”

“I’m up for a cage match if he is lol,” the Twitter-owner replied.

Earlier this month, Musk had posted, “Zuck my *tongue emoji*.

In March, he mocked Meta for planning to launch a dedicated Twitter-like social media application and called it “copy cat”.
