Many are aware of the necessity of shielding their skin from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation, yet the importance of safeguarding our eyes often goes overlooked. However, understanding the crucial role of UV protection for eye health, regardless of the season, is paramount in preserving our vision and preventing long-term damage.

Year-Round Threat

Contrary to popular belief, UV radiation is not solely a concern during the scorching summer months. Even on overcast days or during winter, UV rays penetrate clouds, posing a continuous risk to our eyes. Prolonged exposure to UV radiation can lead to various ocular complications, including growths on the eye, cataracts, macular degeneration, sunburned eye and eye cancer. These conditions can significantly impair vision and diminish quality of life if left untreated.

Preventive Measures

Adopting preventive measures to shield our eyes from UV radiation is simple and effective. Investing in quality sunglasses, such as those labelled with UV400, that block 100% of both UVA and UVB rays is essential. In addition, wearing wide-brimmed hats can provide supplementary protection by reducing the amount of direct sunlight reaching the eyes.

Regular Eye Exams

Routine eye examinations are indispensable in maintaining optimal eye health, as they enable early detection of any abnormalities or conditions exacerbated by UV exposure. An optometrist or ophthalmologist can assess eye health and offer personalized recommendations based on individual needs and lifestyle factors.

Limiting Exposure

Limiting outdoor activities during peak sunlight hours, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., can significantly reduce UV exposure. When spending time outdoors, seek shade whenever possible, especially in areas with high reflective surfaces such as water, sand, or snow, which intensify UV radiation.

Balanced Diet

In addition to external protection, consuming a balanced diet rich in antioxidants can also play a pivotal role in minimizing the sun’s damage to the eyes. Consuming foods high in vitamins A, C and E, zinc and omega-3 fatty acids can help bolster the eyes’ natural defences against UV radiation. Incorporating fruits such as oranges, strawberries and kiwis, as well as vegetables like carrots, spinach, kale and broccoli, provides essential nutrients that support ocular health. In addition, including sources of omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, tuna and walnuts, can further fortify the eyes’ resilience to UV-induced damage.

The eyes, often referred to as the windows to the soul, are also remarkably delicate organs susceptible to damage from UV radiation. As such, prioritizing year-round UV protection is paramount for preserving eye health and preventing vision-related complications. By having a balanced diet rich in antioxidants and essential vitamins, adopting preventive measures such as wearing UV-protective sunglasses and hats and scheduling regular eye examinations, individuals can safeguard their eyesight and enjoy the beauty of the sun without compromising their eye health. Let us not overlook the importance of protecting our eyes from the sun’s harmful rays—our vision depends on it.

Many healthy individuals suffer from the problem of heavy eyelids which is usually due to fatigue lack of rest or spending too much time in front of the computer screens. A few eye allergies, infections, and medical conditions can also be responsible for causing heavy, droopy eyelids.

After a long day at work, we generally feel our eyelids getting heavier as if something is pulling them down. This may be after a day of intense exercise or when we spend hours staring at a computer screen in the office.

But what causes our eyes to get heavy when we feel tired and sleepy?

To understand this, we first need to understand the basic anatomy of the eye. The eyelids are comprised of thin layers of skin and muscles which play a crucial role in protecting the delicate structures of the eye from external elements like dust, debris, and bright light. They also greatly contribute to the overall appearance and expressiveness of the face.

This is particularly true for ocular and brow muscles since they are the most active during our waking hours. Therefore, in general, the heaviness of the eyelids in otherwise healthy individuals is due to fatigue that these muscles experience during the hours we are awake.

Various factors that are responsible for causing sleepy eyes are:

Muscle fatigue: After getting an insufficient amount of rest or a prolonged period of staying awake, the muscles around the eyes tend to become fatigued and weakened which can lead to a loss of tone and firmness in the eyelids causing them to droop or sag.

Reduced blood flow and stasis: The blood in the veins tends to pool, and the stasis causes the eyes to feel heavy, eye bags to appear under the eyes, and also dark circles to form due to the darker colour of the venous blood.

Stress and tension: Having a long screen time or intense visual focus such as working on a computer or reading for extended periods can strain the muscles around our eyes leading to feelings of fatigue and droopiness.

Facial Expressions: Beyond the physical changes to the eyelids themselves, sleepy eyes can also greatly affect our facial expressions and our overall appearance. When we’re feeling tired, our facial muscles tend to slacken, leading to our expressions becoming less animated and lively.

All this can also occur as a result of ageing changes around the eyes. It may be accelerated by chronic exposure to the sun and also the harmful light from our gadgets! Deflation and decent of the tissues around the eyes make them look saggy and tired.

Treatment for sleepy eyes:

Massaging around the eyes: It can help release a lot of strain and make you feel instantly better. This can simply be done by using the tips of your fingers or using tools like the jade roller or the Gua Sha

Get Adequate sleep: the best solution to combat the problem of sleepy eyes is to prioritize getting enough rest each night. One should aim to get at least 7-9 hours of sleep to allow our body and eyes to rest and rejuvenate completely.

Keep yourself hydrated: drink lots and lots of water throughout the day to keep yourself hydrated as dehydration can exacerbate the feelings of fatigue and heaviness in the eyes.

Take breaks from the screen: spending long hours in front of the screen, then you should take regular breaks to rest your eyes and reduce eye strain. One interesting exercise that one can do is practice the 20-20 rule where every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds to give your eyes a break.

Apply cold compresses: Apply a cold compress or chilled cucumber slices to the eyes for a few minutes to reduce puffiness and soothe tired eyes. The cold temperature helps to constrict blood vessels and reduce inflammation.

Impact of sleepy eyes on overall health:

Sleepy eyes can result in difficulty in staying alert, decreased productivity and even safety hazards like impaired driving. There can also be some significant impact on our physical and mental well-being.  Prolonged periods of inadequate sleep can also contribute to mood disturbances, such as irritability, anxiety, and depression.

On the other hand, one may be completely rested, and yet their friends/ colleagues may comment that they look tired/ sleepy ki. This can have a significant impact on the confidence. Every year ¸ there is rise in cases of conjunctivitis when the weather changes and a new season starts. Unfortunately, this year 2023, the spike in viral conjunctivitis in Kerala is much higher than expected, hence creating a panic among general public. In the last 2 weeks, cases of conjunctivitis have surged by almost three-fold. This is quite a concern to health workers too. In Little Flower Hospital, Angamaly, we are witnessing 15-20 cases daily, as compared to two to three in the previous weeks. This sudden spike is quite surprising.

We conducted an outbreak investigation and we doctors attribute it to the change in weather which provides a suitable environment for the microbes to thrive. Other noticeable fact is that last 2 years there was only mild surge in cases of conjunctivitis reported, probably “COVID -19 break the chain “protocol has been a great boon in prevention of spread of viral conjunctivitis .As more people stop following the COVID-19 protocol of washing hands, wearing masks and maintaining social distance, eye hospitals in the Kerala are reporting an increase in cases of conjunctivitis, especially among school children. It is mostly common among children as they are unaware about maintaining hygiene while suffering from this condition. The disease eventually gets transmitted to other family members at home.

Conjunctivitis, also referred to as Pink Eye, is an extremely contagious eye inflammation commonly caused by a bacterial or viral infection or an allergic reaction. Viral conjunctivitis is Commonly known as ‘Madras Eye’. The most common cause of viral conjunctivitis is adenoviruses. This is due to an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin clear tissue that lies over the white part of the eye and lines the inside of the eyelid. Infected eyes become red and swollen, with fluid discharge. Viral conjunctivitis is highly contagious. Most viruses that cause conjunctivitis spread through hand-to-eye contact by hands or objects that are contaminated with the infectious virus. Affects patients of all ages and socioeconomic class. People often confuse conjunctivitis with normal allergic eye infection.

Characteristics of viral conjunctivitis include redness, blood vessel engorgement, ocular discharge, pain, photophobia, and pseudomembranes. Frequently associated infections caused by the adenovirus include upper respiratory tract infections, and diarrhoea in children. This year the virus appears to be more virulent as we have the patients are with tomato-red eyes and associated pain. This is due to some amount of blood under the conjunctiva of the eye.

• We advise the public to wash their hands frequently, as it helps them to stay safe from infection, and to reduce the risk of spreading it if they are infected. • Sharing makeup and wearing contact lenses that are not your own or are improperly cleaned can also cause conjunctivitis. • Advised to keep using separate towels and not to share clothing. • Wear sunglasses to avoid glare and decrease accidental eye contact with your fingers. • Avoid the use of common swimming pool. • Avoiding or delaying treatment could aggravate the condition, hence affected individual should immediately consult here by eye hospital. Most importantly, avoid taking over-the-counter drops. We have seen that in many cases patients self-medicate, and finally they come to us with added complications and may lead to loss of vision. Hence, patients should seek doctor’s opinion. • Avoid touching or rubbing your eyes • Hygiene protocols easing up, should not be encouraged. There is a definitive economic and societal impact due to the costs of visits to the hospitals, treatment, and time lost from work or school. So take utmost care of the eyes.

There are about 2.2 billion people globally with near or distant vision impairment, according to a 2021 report by the World Health Organisation (WHO). India is the second-most populous country in the world and home to over 20 per cent of the world’s blind population. Addressing visual impairment is a major health issue across the globe, and while a number of factors are responsible for poor vision, including age, genetics, and the environment, everyday habits are just as important. There are indications that daily habits can affect a person’s eyesight and develop into further complications if not addressed in time.

What are these habits?

Too much screen time: Working for long hours, especially on a computer has become a reality for many people around the world. The pandemic and the work-from-home culture meant that people have to work virtually for long hours every day. Such a lifestyle can inevitably cause significant strain on your eyes and lead to eye-related problems if not properly checked. A condition often associated with this is “screen-sightedness” or computer vision syndrome. The 20-20-20 technique is a simple yet effective way to take frequent breaks to reduce the stress on your due to extended use of digital devices. Spend at least 20 seconds every 20 minutes looking at something 20 feet away.

Eating eye health-deficient diet: Including foods containing omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, vitamins C and E, and dark leafy greens, nuts, eggs, oranges, and seafood can help maintain eye health.

Not resting enough:
Lack of sleep, especially when it happens on a regular basis, can have many negative effects on our health, both short-term and long-term, including a weakened immune system, weight gain, heart disease, high blood pressure, mood changes, and memory issues. It also affects the health of our eyes significantly. Not resting enough can manifest in bloodshot eyes, dark circles, blurred vision, dry eyes, and other conditions. According to research, the eyes need about 7 to 9 hours of good sleep daily to replenish themselves and function well.

Staying dehydrated. Water is essential for the body to help maintain hydration. Our eyes rely on water to help keep them lubricated in the form of tears. It is quite normal for dust, dirt, and other debris present in the air to sneak into our eyes. In the absence of moisture, one may develop dry, red, or puffy eyes. Thus, it is important to stay hydrated by consuming plenty of water every day.

Factors that contribute to itchy eyes

You are not alone if you feel the need to rub your eyes. Itchy eyes are a very common problem, also known as ocular allergy, these are typically the result of an allergy or a condition known as dry eye syndrome.

Ophthalmologist Dr. Parag Sawal, Sr. Consultant, Sharp Sight Eye Hospitals, explains, “Itchy eyes related problems can be triggered by exposure to pollen, animal fur, mould, dust mites, make-up, or eye drops. The body reacts to the trigger by releasing histamine, causing the blood vessels in the eye/or around the eyes to dilate and irritating the nerve endings so the eyes water.

When the eyes turn red because of an allergy, it is known as allergic conjunctivitis. Other types of allergy may also lead to itchy eyes. For example, a condition called atopic keratoconjunctivitis produces an inflammation of the surface of the eye because of an allergy to a specific substance and can lead to distorted vision. Another condition, vernal keratoconjunctivitis, produces inflammation in the membrane on the surface of the eye and affects mostly adults.”

If you have eczema, a type of dermatitis, around your eyes, this may also cause itching, according to Dr. Sawal. Other factors that contribute to itchy eyes include:

. Reaction to medications, for example, antacids, hormonal replacements, chemotherapy medications, anti-depressants, and pain killers

. Dry eye syndrome

. Infection due to contact lenses

. Irritation due to exposure of eyes to chemicals like cigarette smoke and gases

. Blepharitis, i.e, inflammation of the eyelids

Itchy eyes have been one issue a lot of people are facing due to air pollution and smog. Dr. Sawal further shares the cause and the methods to keep in mind to help relieve your itchy eyes.:

. When you’re dealing with a mild case of allergic itching, you can use a cold cloth or a cold compress over the eyes to ease the discomfort of itching. You can also try splashing your eyes with cold water.

. If your eye itching is due to some particles or dust in your eyes, you can remove it from your eyes by using warm water or saline solution.

. Closing the windows of your car or house.

. Wearing sunglasses when venturing outside to avoid contact with allergens.

. Avoid rubbing your eyes. As constant rubbing of the eyes can damage the top layer of the eye, which can lead to pain and infection.

. You can shower at night to remove the accumulated dirt and pollen from your hair, eyelid, skin, and face to avoid eye irritation.

. Make sure you wash your hands after patting animals to avoid transferring allergens to the eye.

. Maintaining contact lens hygiene can help you protect your eyes from allergens and bacteria. If you are using contact lenses, you must make sure to change them as frequently as possible.

. Keeping the eyes lubricated frequently with artificial tears.

. And at last, keep hydrating yourself.

If you believe that applying sunscreen will protect your skin from the harsh rays of the sun this summer, think again. Your eyes, too, require attention. UV rays are not only harmful to the skin, but they can also harm the eyes.

“UV exposure has been linked to the development of macular degeneration, cataracts, and other vision-loss problems,” says Dr Danish Iqbal, Senior Consultant, Sharp Sight Eye Hospitals.

If you have an existing eye condition, such as macular degeneration or cataracts, he recommends that you protect your eyes from the sun as much as possible during the summer.

Dr. Danish shares some simple tips that will protect your eyes in summer.

Wear sunglasses: Use 100 per cent Ultraviolet (UV) protection sunglasses. The harsh UV rays can damage your eye lens, cornea and even retina. So whenever you head out, make sure you put on your shades.

Splash clean water in the eyes: Your eyes are stressed throughout the day due to severe heat and exposure to the sun. Rinse your eye by splashing cold water on them periodically and drinking a lot of water. This will keep your eyes from becoming dry or puffy.

Do eye exercises: Eye exercises help us to reduce tiredness and improve the eye muscles. Exercising your eyes daily also improves your eyesight and reduces the risk of contracting diseases and infections.

Use cucumber slices: If you are suffering from red eyes in summer, apply slices of cucumber on your eyelids for 10 minutes before you sleep. Cucumber also helps remove tan from under the eyes and absorbs extra moisture.

Nourish it with eye drops: It’s always better to use some kind of eye drops to minimize pain or manage other eye problems. However, you should also consult a qualified ophthalmologist before choosing your eye drops.

Increase intake of green leafy vegetables: In the summer season, increase the intake of green leafy vegetables as they are rich in both lutein and zeaxanthin and are also a good source of eye-friendly vitamin C. Well-known leafy greens include spinach, kale, collards etc.

Sleep well: Your eyes heal themselves as you sleep. Insufficient sleep can lead to dry, itchy, or bloodshot eyes. Lack of proper sleep at night leads to fewer tears in the eye and it may open the door to eye infections.

All you can do is add some glitter or highlighter to the inner corners of the eyes which can add some volume to the eyes.

Because of the Covid pandemic and lockdown, most of us are working from home, and our time spent on digital screens has increased. You spend almost the entire day staring at your laptop or computer screen. The situation is similar for adults and children who are not working but are watching TV or using social media. Because of the increase in digital screen time, your eyes are under more strain than usual. There are some things you should do to keep your two most valuable assets (your eyes) safe and secure.

Keep laptop/computer at proper distance


Many people use their digital devices by holding them up to their eyes. Such people are frequently at a higher risk of developing eye problems, especially when combined with long hours at the workplace. It is always best to keep your laptop at arm’s length. That is, the screen should be at an appropriate distance from your eyes. Your screen should be at least an arm’s length (25 inches) away and slightly lower than eye level. This reduces the strain on the eyes and reduces the intensity of the light.

Adjust your screen position and brightness


The placement of your screen is more important than you realise. In fact, it has a significant impact on how your eyes feel after a long day at work. Adjust the screen position and brightness so that you can work on your system without straining or focusing too hard. If your eyes are too weak, however, you should see a doctor.

Try to work in natural light


Always try to work in natural light rather than using LED or tube lights. When sunlight enters your room through doors and windows, it relaxes your eyes. It also aids you in remaining active throughout the day.

Take regular breaks


One of the most important things to remember when working from home is to take regular breaks. This is one effective piece of advice that many people disregard because they are constantly focused on their work. However, it is recommended that you take your gaze away from the screen for at least 5 minutes every hour. It also improves your concentration and productivity. This is an all-around win-win situation! So remember to take breaks.

Practice Eye Exercises

Take some time every 24 hours to do some regular eye exercises. Your eyes, like any other muscle, require regular exercise to stay strong and healthy. The 20-20-20 rule is one such simple exercise that you can do while working from home. After every 20 minutes, look away from your screen for 20 seconds and focus on any object 20 feet away.

Don’t forget to blink


In general, you blink every four seconds, but some studies show that this decreases by more than half when working with digital screens. Make an effort to blink as frequently as possible to keep your eyes moisturised and prevent them from becoming dry and irritated.

Use bigger fonts


The size of the fonts on your laptop or computer can often influence how our eyes feel. The smaller the font, the more strain on the eyes. This is due to the fact that smaller fonts require more focus while reading, causing your eyes to strain. So, while reading long documents, adjust the screen font as much as possible.

Ensure proper lighting

Glare is a major cause of eye strain. Glare on a digital screen is caused by harsh overhead lighting or light from windows, which are usually directly behind or in front of you. Position your computer/laptop screen to avoid glare and, if necessary, use drapes or blinds on windows.

Stay hydrated

Sufficient liquid intake is critical to the overall health of your body, including your eyes. You can keep your eyes from becoming dry and irritated if you stay hydrated.

Get an eye test

Regular eye examinations are essential for maintaining good eye health at work. Unless advised otherwise by an optician or a health professional, schedule one every two years. An optometrist or ophthalmologist can detect eye problems before they rob you of your vision.

Graphic liners


In their daily makeup routines, most people opt for a classic winged eyeliner. You can, however, go for a graphic liner if you want to liven things up. Even though graphic liners have just lately become fashionable, they are sure to make you stand out. You can go with the conventional black or go all out with colourful combos, as many celebrities do these days. There are a lot of various methods to get this look, which makes it even more enjoyable!

Smokey

The ideal Smokey eye makeup screams big and dramatic more than anything else. It entails mixing dark eyeshadow and giving it a diffused appearance. A smokey eye can be achieved in a variety of methods, including blending the eyeshadow only at the end or all over the eyelid. This look essentially draws attention to and accentuates your eyes, making them the most crucial feature of the complete makeup look.

Multicolor


If you want to look forceful, a multicoloured eyeshadow or liner might also help. Bold eyes are commonly associated with dark colours, although this is not the case. Using brightly coloured eyeliners, such as blue, purple, or white, can give your makeup a distinct look. Colors like pink, orange, and yellow can be used in bright eyeshadow combinations. Glitter

Who doesn’t enjoy a little glitz and glam? Glitters are the easiest way to amp up any makeup look without putting in a lot of effort or thinking. You may use either loose glitter or sparkly eyeshadow for this look. The first option will give you the most sparkly look, while the second option is perfect if you’re in a hurry and don’t want to make a mess. In any case, you’ll look tough and glamorous in no time with this style.

Stickers

Stickers, like graphic liners, are a relatively new trend. Many makeup firms, such as Simi haze beauty, have recently released makeup stickers. These generally consist of eyeliners in various forms and colours that look dramatic and make you stick out a lot. These are a terrific way to think outside the box and try new things. These eyeliner stickers come in a variety of colours, from vivid pinks and greens to holographic, and are a great option if you don’t want to spend hours perfecting your eye makeup.
