Ensemble x Tarun Tahiliani: An exclusive collection with design guru

The organisation has five facilities in Mumbai, New Delhi, and Hyderabad as well as a significant global e-commerce presence under Tina Tahiliani’s leadership…reports Asian Lite News

The establishment of multi designer store Ensemble in Mumbai in 1987 is the narrative of how Indian fashion has changed over the past 35 years. Before its time, Tarun and Sal Tahiliani came up with a brilliant notion that decolonised design, transformed retail, paved the way for new professions, and inspired India’s first fashion scene.

The organisation has five facilities in Mumbai, New Delhi, and Hyderabad as well as a significant global e-commerce presence under Tina Tahiliani’s leadership.

As a highlight of the yearlong celebrations of exclusive collection previews, which were especially created to celebrate this milestone, Ensemble presents “Ensemble x Tarun Tahiliani,” an exclusive collection with the design guru. This collection is part of Ensemble’s 35th year calendar of collaborations.

“It is always a joy to see the trajectory of Ensemble flourish in its 35th year. It literally feels like we opened it just yesterday! To honour this, together we created a capsule collection of our best silhouettes and techniques developed for finesse and modernity while sticking to our design aesthetic”, says Tarun Tahiliani.

“Ensemble x Tarun Tahiliani”, the finesse of the fine Aari stitch in Kasab comes to life! “We have taken what might appear traditional and fully contemporized with our range of gilet, jumpsuits, draped dresses Kashida coats and other silhouettes that we love to see cross over from east to west”, adds the designer. A new shaded point stitch chrysanthemum that has been used as a motif of new life and paired with traditional zardozi stitches and Sitara, always celebrating the ‘India Modern’ handwriting.

The pioneering designs of Rohit Khosla, Tarun Tahiliani, Abu Jani & Sandeep Khosla, Neil Beiff, and Amaya (Sunita Kapoor and Anita Shivdasani), as well as those of Tarun Tahiliani, Tarun Beiff, and Abu Jani & Sandeep Khosla, were all brought together when Ensemble first opened its doors at Lions Gate in Mumbai in 1987. Therefore, “Ensemble x Tarun Tahiliani” serves as a type of homecoming for both brands.

“As we celebrate 35 years, we continue to remain explorers with an aim is to spotlight the indigenous craft, embroidery, and weaving traditions of India and present them in a modern format. And this collection does just that as it scripts the story of Indian fashion and presents design that mirrors the changing fashion vocabulary while staying true to building blocks of quality, craftsmanship that are hallmarks of both Ensemble and Tarun Tahiliani”, says Tina Tahiliani.

India’s first metaverse-exclusive fashion show set to take place in Decentra land

The Fashion Tour Park features multiple interactive areas, gamified zones and showcase areas, with several engaging activities in store for users to interact with throughout the duration of the tour…reports Asian Lite News

This year, the 16th iteration of the Blenders Pride Glassware Fashion Tour, supported by the Fashion Design Council of India, presented a version that is more youthful, inclusive, and innovative.

The Fashion Tour enters the Metaverse in its innovative new avatar, making an industry-first move to create a groundbreaking fusion of fashion and technology that youthful audiences will never have seen before.

As a first mover in the Metaverse in India, the Fashion Tour has launched ‘Blenders Pride Glassware Fashion Tour Park’ in Decentra land, a global web3 platform, where only renowned global brands have created an immersive metaverse experience for their fans. The Fashion Tour Park features multiple interactive areas, gamified zones and showcase areas, with several engaging activities in store for users to interact with throughout the duration of the tour.

But the most exciting attraction is India’s first metaverse-exclusive fashion show, set to take place at the Fashion Tour Park on December 10, 2022. This metaverse fashion show will feature outfits from the ‘Style Gallery’ exhibit of the Fashion Tour called ‘This is not a T-shirt’ project. These unique T-shirt outfits are designed by 60 designers & homegrown fashion labels, who have embellished or even deconstructed the basic T-shirt into a design celebrating their authentic interpretation of the four themes of the Fashion Tour.

This season Indian Cricketer Harmanpreet Kaur associated with Blenders Pride Glassware Fashion Tour, here’s what she had to say:

How do you feel about this collaboration with Blenders Pride Glassware Fashion Tour?

Harmanpreet: It’s a moment of pride for me, because, you know, I come from a Cricket background, it’s the first time that I’m going to be part of any fashion show. It’s a great moment for me, and it was the right time because this time, they are going to add some boost to the traditional outfit. And I think for me, it was the right time to come on the board and I thought, it would be great.

Do you feel like international fashion brands and sports go hand-in-hand but in India that is still to happen, at least for female athletes?

Harmanpreet: Yes. Because, we have always seen this point of view, we wear traditional clothes, otherwise sports have sporty look, at the fashion tour it was a different zone for me. I’m very, very excited to wear the SNCC collection.

Do you wish that brands supported female athletes more and brought them into the mainstream as they do with men?

Harmanpreet: Now with women’s cricket becoming more popular, female cricketers are getting more attention. The more we win, the more we get recognized. That’s when brands usually approach and support us, which is very encouraging.

Define your fashion style and your association with Blenders Pride?

Harmanpreet: I like to be more in my comfort zone which I can carry easily. The SNCC outfit that I am wearing right now is also very comfortable and has elements from my sport – cricket, which makes me love this outfit even more.

Winter fashion styles

Joggers are also a great option if you’re looking to add a casual touch to an otherwise formal outfit. For example, you can wear a pair of black joggers with a loose-fitting shirt and a pair of sneakers to complete a casual winter outfit…reports Asian Lite News

Even though most people dread the cold season, it does come with some perks. Winter blues are a great excuse to invest in cozy clothing and accessories that will keep you warm for the rest of the year-and help you look stylish in the process! We all know that a winter wardrobe should be filled with natural fabrics like cotton, wool, and cashmere.

But while these materials are arguably the most practical when it comes to staying warm during chilly days, they also have a downside: they aren’t exactly as fashionable as other options. Fortunately, there are ways to stay warm and trendy at the same time! Santosh Srivastava, Marketing Manager at Numero UNO shares three different winter fashion styles that will get you through this season in style.

3 winter fashion styles to get you through the cold season.(photo:IANSLIFE)

The jogger

The jogger, essentially a loose-fitting pair of pants with a wide leg, has been gaining popularity in the fashion world for a few years now. This style is efficient for winter since it will allow you to move freely without feeling constricted by tight clothing. Whereas jeans are often too heavy to wear during the winter, joggers made of lightweight fabrics such as cotton, and linen, or synthetic materials such as polyester or spandex will keep you warm without weighing you down.

Joggers are also a great option if you’re looking to add a casual touch to an otherwise formal outfit. For example, you can wear a pair of black joggers with a loose-fitting shirt and a pair of sneakers to complete a casual winter outfit.

The fur-lined hoodie

Though the fashion world has been exploring the relationship between fur and style for many seasons, fur is still heavily associated with winter clothing. If you’re looking for a garment that will keep you warm without being too heavy or bulky, a fur-lined hoodie could be the perfect option. Unlike a regular hoodie, a fur-lined version will make sure you stay warm even on the chilliest days. This is because fur naturally traps warm air, which makes it a great insulating material.

Furthermore, a fur-lined hoodie is a great option if you’re looking for a way to play with textures in your winter outfit. While a regular hoodie would look too casual with a fancy pair of pants, a fur-lined one will allow you to add a playful accent to your outfit that will still look stylish.

The faux fur coat

The faux fur coat is an investment piece that will help you stay warm during the entire winter season. Unlike real fur, faux fur is cruelty-free and doesn’t shed-which means that it’s a great option for people who don’t want to wear real fur yet want to stay warm and stylish at the same time. Fur is a very visually appealing fabric, so a faux fur coat will instantly add a stylish touch to any winter outfit. These coats come in various colours, so you can choose one that will complement the rest of your wardrobe. A faux fur coat is a great option if you’re looking for a stylish yet functional garment to wear on the coldest days.

Curating a world of fantasy and surrealism

Every year, we’re becoming braver, experimental and more fearless. I am even more proud of our team and the brand, as we have managed to make it a commercial success too…Gaurav Gupta speaks with Puja Gupta

Gaurav Gupta has established his name as an avant garde designer, not just in India but also internationally. The brand made its global presence felt when American rapper Megan Thee Stallion debuted it at the Oscars red carpet wearing a custom gown.

Gupta says it was the most fulfilling moment for him to be the first Indian designer to be worn by an ‘A plus’ celebrity on the carpet. We got to chat with him about his journey, his brand aesthetics and more:

Gaurav Gupta’s creation

How would you define the journey of Gaurav Gupta as a brand?

The brand started 17 years back with my brother and business partner Saurabh Gupta with 2-3 tailors and a master. And today we’re a team of over 200 people and each one of them is extremely skilled and talented for their own purpose in the brand. The brand has always stood by the principles of being experimental, innovative and driving culture to expand minds, and to be able to show people a new way of living.

Creating a world of fantasy and surrealism, it’s an art-fashion brand. Every year, we’re becoming braver, experimental and more fearless. I am even more proud of our team and the brand, as we have managed to make it a commercial success too.

Another amazing thing that happened this year is that the brand has become fully global and was on multiple best-dressed lists across the globe for our placement at the Oscars with Megan thee Stallion, at Time100 with Mary J Blige, dressing Cardi-B for her music video, Aishwarya Rai at Cannes and many others for dressing iconic cult personalities.

How has your design aesthetics changed over the years?

We are culturalists, we have our own cult in language and design. It honestly depends on my mood; this time it’s more space-age which is becoming more and more fearless. It’s not about what a client wants, we tend to challenge it more and the world responds to it.

Your most fulfilling moment?

The most fulfilling moment for me was when I woke up to Megan Thee Stallion debuting at the Oscars red carpet wearing our custom gown. It was the first time an Indian designer was worn by an A plus celebrity on the carpet. I could see the potential of an Indian designer truly becoming global, we were recognised for our history, our expertise in form and design. And then to be touted as the best-dressed celebrity across almost all leading international media, was surreal.

Gaurav Gupta’s creation

You launched your latest collection at LFW x FDCI. Tell us about it.

The collection is called ‘StarLand’, inspired by the infinity of the cosmos. An extra-terrestrial other planetary zone; travelling through space and galaxies. This is what inspired me, the infinite shapes, our galactic-meteoric embroideries, comet like shapes, cosmic colors like the blackness of space, Jupiter gold, galactic lava grey and space teal. We were extremely playful with menswear inspired by astrology and astronomy-sharp embroideries and cuts. An abstract interpretation of how a new world would look like. It took us 3-4 months to create the entire collection.

What are you next working on?

I am working towards making the brand more and more sustainable. And establishing a zero-waste policy-all our packaging is made out of recycled ocean and landfill waste. And there are many new projects in the pipeline like new stores, architectural projects and others that I can’t disclose, yet.

‘Blooms of Paradise’

For men, there were embroidered cropped kurtas with circular hemlines, along with jackets, double-breasted bundies and draped styles…reports Asian Lite News

Ace couturiers like Shyamal & Bhumika, national-award winner Nachiket Bharve, among others presented their latest creation on the final day of the Lakme Fashion Week in partnership with the FDCI.

Shyamal and Bhumika’s took inspiration from nature’s beauty, Indian history as well as traditions and ancient architecture like royal courts and museums to create their new line-up called the ‘Blooms of Paradise’.

Hand embroidery with antique finish metallic threads appeared amongst pearls, beads and multi-hued resham. Techniques like resham aari, silk-zardozi, metal thread peeta, knotting and sequinning were used along with beadwork, silk thread and crystals.

The duo chose handwoven raw silk, matka silk, sheer silk organza, tulle along with hand-dyed velvet in hues like English rose pink, muted ivory, deep powder blue and moved to emerald, dusty mint, orchid, pearl, cannoli-cream, olive to finally end with sage, sky, lunar grey and midnight blue.

For women, the designers offered ensembles like shararas, draped skirts with jackets, shift kurtas, capes over jumpsuits and lehengas with jackets. Silhouettes pointed to draped, flared, paneled lehengas, corsets, flouncy voluminous sleeves, off-shoulder accents, empire lines, dhoti pants, constructed saris and some trailing dupattas.

For men, there were embroidered cropped kurtas with circular hemlines, along with jackets, double-breasted bundies and draped styles.

Actress Yami Gautam walked as the showstopper, wearing a pastel, paneled, flared, lehenga, with floral motifs, paired with a shimmering, corset choli and tulle dupatta.

Barve, who recently made headlines for winning the National Award for costume designing in the movie “Tanhaji”, came up with his contemporary festival collection called Ephermera’.

Inspired by the “patterns of the ocean, tides on shores, along with meteor showers in the sky, blooms, sea anemones and tidal currents”, the couturier used of cutwork, thread embroidery, sequins work, appliques and beading to add texture to the ensembles.

Upcycled fabrics and trims from previous seasons we repurposed to create the collection. Air organza, silks, velvets and chiffons were used to form floor-length swirling gowns and capes, cocktail-wear lehengas, jumpsuits, separates and sari gowns.

The highlights of his show were the floor-sweeping ensemble with a off-shoulder bodice, and the sheer asymmetric cape with appliques work, over bralette and matching trousers. For men, Barve restricted the options to black, embroidered, bundie, buttonless jacket, kurta, sheer shirt, and trousers.

Huma Qureshi ended the show in great style wearing a dazzling, magenta, heavily, encrusted, embroidered lehenga and long-sleeved choli complemented with a matching, sheer, organza, ruffled, dupatta.

Day 5 of LFW x FDCI also saw Bollywood actors Shamita Shetty walk for designer Rina Dhaka, Alaya F for Nikita Mhaisalkar, Bhagyashree Patwardhan for Sanjukta Dutta.

Babil Irrfan Khan debuted on the ramp for menswear designer Pawan Sachdeva, while Mrunal Thakur walked for the grand finale for Rajesh Pratap Singh.
