G20 India: Shaping A More Inclusive World Order

India’s unwavering commitment to inclusivity and sustainable development, embodied by the theme ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’ and the motto ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,’ set the stage for addressing pressing Global South concerns….reports Asian Lite News

The momentous culmination of the highly anticipated G20 summit in New Delhi has now come to pass, leaving an indelible mark of triumphant diplomacy that has captured the hearts and minds of global statesmen.

With resounding applause and enthusiasm, diplomats from every corner of the world extol India’s magnificent leadership, a presidency that not only masterfully spanned the divisions within this diverse group but also skilfully laid the foundation for a profoundly enriched future of collaborative endeavours.

This year’s presidency and summit was held in New Delhi from September 9-10, marking a new era in the fostering of cooperation among G20 economies. In light of India’s commitment to ensure that schemes reach the last mile and leave no one behind, the presummit meetings between India and ASEAN or other countries of the Global South assumed even more importance.

No such exercise to ensure that concerns of the Global South reached the table of the G20 economies has been undertaken in the past. India’s vision for the G20 summit revolves around inclusivity and sustainable development, encapsulated by the motto ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,’ which means ‘the world is one family.’ Indeed, the summit’s theme, ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future,’ aptly reflects the essence of the various sessions, all geared towards discussions and deliberations on the earth, our global family, and the future of our interconnected global community.

As an integral part of this initiative, the G20 has faced an increasingly pressing need to confront the challenges affecting the Global South, where issues such as healthcare, education, and climate change have taken centre stage. India’s presidency has proven highly effective in narrowing the development divide between the Global North and South.

During the first day of the G20 Summit at Bharat Mandapam, India extended a warm welcome to the African Union, representing the largest coalition of least developed nations, as a permanent member of the G20. This historic move marks a significant departure towards more inclusive governance and decision-making, granting a vital voice to 55 African nations.

By prioritizing such crucial concerns, and fostering earnest deliberations and consensus-building, India has not only paid due respect but also underscored the paramount importance of the Global South within the G20 framework.

While presiding over the summit, the Prime Minister of India proudly proclaimed a momentous achievement: the unanimous consensus among all member states regarding the G20 New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration, a historic milestone that was formally embraced during the inaugural day of the G20 Summit.

In a remarkable diplomatic feat, India accomplished the unanimous adoption of the “New Delhi Leaders’ Summit Declaration” addressing all critical developmental and geopolitical concerns, despite existing divisions related to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. India’s skilled negotiators toiled relentlessly, adeptly bridging the gap between the Western Bloc and the Chinese-Russian alliance.

Prime Minister Modi’s bilateral engagements with influential leaders such as Joe Biden, Rishi Sunak, Olaf Scholz, and Fumio Kishida on the sidelines of the G20 Summit significantly contributed to this historic consensus. Crafting a cohesive joint statement, as was evident even in the preceding year, proved to be an arduous undertaking. Furthermore, India’s presidency unfolded amidst persisting bilateral tensions with China, primarily revolving around territorial disputes. This perpetual friction added an additional layer of intricacy for India’s G20 Sherpa team, with China often assuming a disruptive role in multiple deliberations.

Moreover, the Indian government deviated from the convention by scheduling the G20 summit two months earlier than the customary November timeframe. This compressed timeline left officials with two months less to navigate the intricate process of formulating a Joint Communique that effectively addressed pressing issues including climate finance, healthcare investment, and poverty alleviation. New Delhi’s resolve in overcoming this formidable challenge to forge a consensus on these vital matters underscores its unwavering commitment to global cooperation and development.

One of the notable outcomes of India’s G20 presidency was the launch of the ‘Global South Initiative’ which has been able to foster better collaboration among G20 members and Global South nations to address common challenges.

It seeks to promote economic growth, enhance access to healthcare, and education, and facilitate technology transfers Page 3 of 6 without too many hurdles. By championing such initiatives, India has taken concrete steps to address the specific needs and concerns of the Global South as well.

In addition, promoting dialogue on climate change – an issue that has been a bone of contention – and ensuring some accountability from the Global North has been a major diplomatic win for the community. Acting as a bridge between the Global North and South, India has been able to emphasise to the world that the issue of climate change is at the doorstep and adversely impacting the Global South much more quickly and significantly than any other part of the world.

In the midst of contentious deliberations, India took a resolute stand on pivotal issues. These included the imperative commitment to curtail fossil fuel consumption, elevate renewable energy objectives, and substantially decrease greenhouse gas emissions. It is noteworthy that these measures encountered resistance, notably from China and Saudi Arabia. During the intricate negotiations leading up to the declaration, India and fellow developing nations emphasized the vital importance of industrialized nations fulfilling their existing commitments.

Conversely, the developed nations championed a global emphasis on climate-related targets. The New Delhi declaration issued a clarion call for the gradual phase-out and rationalization of fossil fuel subsidies while concurrently pledging to reduce the utilization of “unabated coal power” and accentuate the promotion of clean energy generation.

Prime Minister Modi made an epochal announcement, heralding the birth of the Global Biofuels Alliance. This monumental initiative has garnered the support of nineteen nations and twelve international organizations, uniting a diverse assembly of G20 member states and non-members alike.

At its genesis, the alliance’s founding triumvirate comprises India, Brazil, and the United States—a powerful trinity committed to driving the biofuels agenda to new heights.

While the G20’s robust endorsement of this initiative is undeniable, key member nations including Argentina, Canada, Italy, and South Africa have lent their unwavering support to this visionary cause. Notably, the alliance’s inclusive spirit extends beyond G20, extending invitations to nations of distinction such as Bangladesh, Singapore, Mauritius, and the UAE, further amplifying the alliance’s potential for profound global impact.

India’s steadfast commitment to these goals reflects an unwavering dedication to environmental sustainability and global progress. This diplomatic approach has not only enhanced India’s global standing but also ensured that diverse interests are adequately represented in G20 deliberations.

On the cusp of the 10th anniversary of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), a seminal development of utmost geopolitical significance transpired. In a display of unprecedented collaboration, a coalition comprising India, the United States, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, France, Germany, Italy, and the European Union came together to formalize a ground-breaking Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) marking the birth of the IndiaMiddle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEE-EC). This visionary corridor’s primary mission is to invigorate economic cohesion while seamlessly bridging the continents of Asia and Europe, presenting a formidable challenge to the existing global order.

US President Joe Biden, in tandem with Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, in response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s request, unequivocally endorsed this pioneering project. Simultaneously, the UAE’s President, a trusted confidant of PM Modi and a staunch ally of India, passionately championed the initiative, envisioning the Arabian Peninsula as a pivotal economic conduit between India and Europe.

Further fortifying this transformative endeavour. French President Emmanuel Macron, along with the collective support of Germany, Italy, and the European Commission, has forged a resolute alliance, poised to shape a new era of global economic connectivity and strategic influence.

At this pivotal juncture Italy, a prominent member of the G7, under the leadership of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, deliberates a potential withdrawal from the China-sponsored BRI. The unfolding developments acquire an even deeper layer of strategic significance, as Italy stands as the sole G7 nation to have endorsed the BRI, a global trade and infrastructure initiative inspired by the ancient Silk Road that once connected imperial China with the Western world.

Italy is poised to hold the G7 presidency in the upcoming year, and recalibrating its relationship with Beijing holds the potential to mend ties with its Western allies, underlining the intricate diplomacy at play.

India’s presidency of the G20 has also brought attention to other issues of equity, like vaccine distribution, medical equipment, technology transfers as well as trade imbalances. Moreover, India’s emphasis on infrastructure development as a means to stimulate economic growth and reduce inequality has resonated with Global South countries.

The G20’s commitment to the ‘Global Infrastructure Initiative’ has given a shot in the arm to the development aspirations of many Global South nations. By facilitating infrastructure financing and technology transfer, India’s G20 presidency has the potential to be a catalyst and facilitator in the infrastructural development of these countries.

Meanwhile, India has embarked on several global initiatives as a leader among Global South countries, with the goal of promoting cooperation, development, and common interests. One notable initiative is the International Solar Alliance, a collaborative effort to advance solar energy adoption and reduce fossil fuel dependence in sun-rich nations. This initiative has garnered support from over 120 countries and fosters collaboration on solar projects, research, and technology development.

Additionally, India has been able to strongly advocate for better access to affordable medicines for developing nations. Providing cost-effective treatments for diseases like HIV/AIDS, the pharmaceutical industry in India has been able to encourage supply chain expansions in the world of generic medicine manufacturing as well. Lastly, the world is aware of India’s vocal & active participation in international efforts to combat terrorism. It has proposed initiatives to counter the financing of terrorism and regularly contributes towards strengthening of the global counter-terrorism mechanism. All of these are in addition to the major contribution India has made, over the last 70 years, to the UN Peacekeeping Missions providing troops and resources to promote peace and stability in conflict zones across the world.

In conclusion, the G20 summit in New Delhi signifies a historic milestone in global diplomacy, epitomizing resolute leadership and heralding a new era of cooperation among G20 economies. India’s unwavering commitment to inclusivity and sustainable development, embodied by the theme ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’ and the motto ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,’ set the stage for addressing pressing Global South concerns.

Despite geopolitical challenges, the summit produced a momentous “New Delhi Leaders’ Summit Declaration,” showcasing India’s adept diplomacy. The ‘Global South Initiative,’ climate change advocacy and equity-focused stances underline India’s role as a global leader. This presidency amplifies equity concerns, emphasizing infrastructure development and global initiatives, solidifying India’s influential position in shaping a more just and sustainable world.

New Delhi Declaration Adopted At G20

The development was quite unexpected as the Delhi Declaration was being expected to be announced on Sunday, the last day of the G20 Summit.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said consensus has been built on New Delhi G20 Leaders’ Summit Declaration and announced its adoption.

The Prime Minister, who is chairing the G20 sessions, congratulated the Sherpas and ministers who had worked towards forging the consensus.

“I have received good news. Due to the hard work of our team, consensus has been built on New Delhi G20 Leaders’ Summit Declaration. My proposal is to adopt this leadership declaration. I announce to adopt this declaration. On this occasion, I congratulate my Sherpa, ministers, who worked hard for it and made it possible,” he said.

The announcement of adoption of the declaration was welcomed with thumping of desks.

The development was quite unexpected as the Delhi Declaration was being expected to be announced on Sunday, the last day of the Summit.

Though the details of the wordings of the Delhi declaration are not yet known, the fact that Modi personally having announced that a consensus has been arrived at, indicates that some sort of compromise between Russia/China combined and other members of the G20 bloc has been arrived at, especially on the language related to the Ukraine war..

“India’s G20 Presidency has been the most ambitious in history of G20. There are 73 outcomes (lines of effort) and 39 annexed documents (presidency documents, not including Working Group outcome documents). With 112 outcomes and presidency documents, we have more than doubled the substantive work from previous presidencies,” official sources said.

As reported earlier, amid hectic parleys over finding a consensus on the wordings for the Russia-Ukraine war, the G20 diplomats are learnt to have arrived at a “compromise language” to describe the full scale invasion.

In his opening remarks at the Summit, the Prime Minister said that the 21st century is a time that has the potential to give a new direction to the entire world.

“It’s a time when years old challenges demand new solutions from us. Therefore, we must move forward by fulfilling all our responsibilities with a Human Centric approach,” he said. (ANI)

Xi’s No-Show in Global Summits Sparks Debate on China’s Intentions

Is China shifting its policy with President Xi Jinping missing the G20 summit in New Delhi right after skipping a speech at BRICS business forum?…writes Mahua Venkatesh

Chinese President Xi Jinping’s absence for the G20 summit, which kicked off in New Delhi today, has been in discussion for a while. Beijing gave no reason for Xi not attending the summit amid speculations. Whether it is Xi’s pressing domestic economic situation, his awkwardness to meet US President Joe Biden amid US-China tension or the rising rift with India, for China, this could be a missed opportunity.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s increased engagement on the global stage – both multilateral and bilateral — has given India a platform to project itself as a credible voice in the world. India is now aggressively bridging the gap even with Southeast Asian nations, once considered China’s backyard. On the other hand, Xi’s overseas engagements have drastically come down since the outbreak of the Covid pandemic. The inclusion of the African Union under India’s G20 presidency has also cemented New Delhi’s position as a voice for the Global South.

Eyebrows were also raised last month when Xi unexpectedly decided to skip a scheduled speech at the BRICS business forum. In his place, his commerce minister Wang Wentao read out the speech.

Again, no reason was given for Xi’s move.

Bill Bishop, who leads a newsletter Sinocism, focusing on Chinese affairs had then pointed out that Xi had not made many public appearances for some time and that it was “a bit strange”.

Analysts are now watching Xi’s actions closely. “We don’t know if the absence is for any particular reason but it would be interesting to note whether Beijing’s overall foreign and domestic policies are undergoing a shift as new challenges emerge for the leader,” one of them said.

With a patchy economic recovery in China in the post Covid phase leading to rise in unemployment and debt levels, Xi might want to intensify nationalist sentiments, another said, referring to a recently released map by Beijing which showed Arunachal Pradesh as part of its territory.

Meanwhile, according to the Conversation, a media outfit providing in depth analysis, the effect of Xi’s refusal to attend the New Delhi G20 summit is effectively a statement contesting India’s coveted status as a global leader.

“You only have to look at Modi’s list of overseas travel since 2020 to see that he has engaged with, and been hosted by, a wide range of world leaders. At the same time, hampered by COVID and facing a difficult economy, Xi’s foreign visits have been limited,” the Conversation said, adding that contrary to Beijing’s decades-old strategy of containing India in the South Asian region, New Delhi has begun to spread its strategic relationships in south-east Asia, Europe, Africa, Oceania and the US. “This has significantly challenged China’s status in the international sphere,” it said.

Many have been critical of Xi’s decision of skipping G20. US National Security Adviser Jack Sullivan at a recent press briefing said, “If China wants to come in and play the role of spoiler, of course, that option is available to them.”

G20: India Appeals To Turn Trust Deficit To Confidence

PM Modi also invited the head of the African Union to take his seat as a member of the G20 as the first session of the Summit started in Bharat Mandapam, Pragati Maidan

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday called upon the international community to transform the global trust deficit into one of trust and reliance. He stressed that it is time for the world to move together.

In his address at Session-1 on ‘One Earth’ during the G20 Summit being hosted under India’s Presidency, PM Modi said, “Following the COVID pandemic, the world faced a new challenge of trust deficit and unfortunately, the wars have further deepened this. But we must remember that if we can defeat a pandemic like COVID, we can also win over the challenge of this trust deficit. Today, as the President of the G20, India calls upon the entire world to transform this global trust deficit into trust and confidence. This is the time for all of us to move together.”

He further said, “In this time, the mantra of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas’ can be the torch bearer for us. Be it the divide between North and South, the distance between East and West, management of food and fuel, terrorism, cyber security, health, energy or water security, we will have to find a solid solid solution to this for future generations.”

PM Modi also invited the head of the African Union to take his seat as a member of the G20 as the first session of the Summit started in Bharat Mandapam, Pragati Maidan. Following this President of the Union of Comoros and Chairperson of the African Union (AU), Azali Assoumani took his seat as the Union and became a permanent member of the G20.

Before the start of the proceedings of the G20 Summit, PM Modi offered condolences over the loss of lives due to an earthquake in Morocco. PM Modi said, “We pray that all injured recover at the earliest. India is ready to offer all possible assistance to Morocco in this difficult time.”

Before the G20 Summit commenced, PM Modi welcomed world leaders, including US President Joe Biden, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, UK PM Rishi Sunak, and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

‘India Has Built A ‘Unique Narrative’ During G20’

India’s G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant said India has truly emerged as the voice of the Global South during its G20 presidency….reports Asian Lite News

India’s G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant has underscored the “unique Indian narrative,” India has set during its presidency of the G20 Summit, saying India “truly emerged as the voice of the Global South”.

In a short video message, shared on X, by the official handle of India’s G20 Presidency, Kant said, “So India has built a unique Indian narrative during its G20 presidency.”

“India has truly emerged as the voice of the Global South during its G20 presidency and this is the first time that four emerging markets, one after another Indonesia, India, Brazil, and South Africa will hold the G20 presidency and therefore it gives a very massive opportunity to bring all the critical issues of developing countries centre stage, as India has done, and carry them vigorously forward for implementation,” said Kant in the short video message.

In the video, India’s G20 Sherpa highlighted the issues India focused on during its presidency of the summit like digital public infrastructure, principles of lifestyle for sustainability, traditional medicine, millets, global biofuel and many more.

He also mentioned how India, in contrast to other countries, has organised different meetings of the G20 Summit in different states and cities. However, according to Kant, one of the biggest achievements of India’s presidency was its focus on women empowerment and gender equality.

Kant said that among India’s most critical ones was its focus on digital public infrastructure.

“Then there’s been a lot of focus on traditional medicine. The Health Ministry and the G20 relating to health have focused on the traditional medicine sector in a big way,” he said.

India’s G20 Sherpa also said that during the summit, there was a focus on new Group Startup 20, the Disaster Risks Resilience, which “opened the door for discussion on all aspects relating to disasters and how to handle them”.

The Indian narrative also “revolved around Millets,” which was a part of every single meal that was served, said Kant adding, “There was a huge emphasis on focus on One district-One product, which formed a part of our gifts which were given to the visitors who came to India”.

He also said that India’s G20 has been “very different from other countries”.

“In most G20 countries, when they take over the presidency, the events are held in either one city or two cities. In sharp contrast to this, the Prime Minister’s emphasis has been that the G20 should be held in every state of India. So G20 has been held in every state, but over 60 cities of India,” Kant said.

Kant noted one of the biggest achievements of India’s presidency was its emphasis on women empowerment and gender equality.

“I think we’ve laid a massive emphasis on gender equality by laying emphasis on bridging the digital divide, by laying emphasis on the role of women in climate change, by laying emphasis on greater labour force participation. I don’t think any country has contributed so significantly to women and girls as India has done. And that has been a very key highlight of India’s G20 presidency,” said Kant.

India assumed the G20 Presidency on December 1 last year. The 18th G20 Summit in New Delhi scheduled to be held on September 9-10 will be a culmination of all the G20 processes and meetings held throughout the year.

The Group of Twenty (G20) comprises 19 countries – Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Türkiye, United Kingdom and the United States and the European Union. (ANI)

According to the report, Chinese accounts have also posted on Facebook regarding the G-20 summit and Kashmir. China has stated that it will not participate, and Modi’s reaction seems to be threatening”.

Several Chinese accounts on Twitter and Facebook have shared the tweet of Pakistan Strategic Forum (@ForumStrategic) on G-20. These tweets stated: “The countries refused to participate in the G-20 meeting in India’s illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).”

Later, Several Chinese accounts shared the screenshot of @ForumStrategic’s tweet on various platforms including Twitter, and Facebook.

A Chinese user named @hexieshehui1 retweeted a tweet from @ForumStrategic and wrote: “China’s non-participation in the G-20 meeting in Kashmir is due to the regional dispute with India on one side and support for Pakistan on the other. Other Islamic countries have expressed support for Pakistan on religious grounds.” The image given below shows Chinese users sharing posts from the Pakistan Strategic Forum.

Another Chinese account named Ou Mei Zhen (Uncle Shun) posted on Facebook with the caption: “Modi is ashamed, and he is also “threatening” China!”. The account also shared a tweet by Pakistan Strategic Forum (@ForumStrategic) on G20.

Global South on focus as India’s busy diplomatic season kicks off

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to become voice of Global South as India is going ahead full throttle in the next few months with parallel initiatives to expand its global footprint, reports Ateeth Sharma

In tune with high-profile international gatherings at home during its ongoing G20 presidency, India is going ahead full throttle in the next few months with parallel initiatives to expand its global footprint.

Fresh from his three-nation tour of Japan, Papua New Guinea, and Australia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has a packed schedule ahead as he gives a fresh impetus to India’s bilateral and multilateral efforts to find common ground among members of various groupings and forums in an increasingly polarized political landscape.

Next week, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is scheduled to participate in the Meeting of BRICS Foreign Ministers in Cape Town that will also shape the agenda for the 15th BRICS Summit to be held in Johannesburg from August 22 to 24 this year.

Hosted by South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Naledi Pandor, the mid-term meeting provides an opportunity for Foreign Ministers of Brazil, Russia, India, and China to reflect on regional and global developments.

More significantly, with the theme for South Africa’s BRICS chairship being ‘BRICS and Africa: Partnership for Mutually Accelerated Growth, Sustainable Development, and Inclusive Multilateralism’, as many as 15 Foreign Ministers from Africa and the Global South have also been invited for a ‘Friends of BRICS’ meeting to be held on June 2.

The August meeting will be the first in-person gathering of BRICS leaders in three years where PM Modi will carry forward his vision of utilising India’s current G20 presidency to give resonance to the voice of the Global South and the importance of South-South Cooperation to collectively shape the global agenda.

The BRICS brings together some 3.2 billion people and, after the United Nations and the Non-Aligned Movement, is among the largest bloc of countries in terms of population.

During India’s ongoing G20 Presidency, participation from Africa is the highest ever, which includes South Africa (G20 member), Mauritius, Egypt, Nigeria, AU Chair – Comoros, and African Union Development Agency-New Partnership for Africa’s Development (AUDA-NEPAD).

Much before that, under India’s chairmanship, New Delhi will host the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit on July 3-4 which is expected to see in-person participation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping and several other top leaders.

The SCO comprises India, China, Russia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Pakistan, covering most of Eurasia. Iran will soon become the ninth member of the grouping while the process of Belarus’ admission to the organisation has been accelerated.

The extensive interactions between the top leaders will continue as India will host the G20 Leaders’ Summit on September 9-10 during its presidency.

The Group of Twenty (G20) comprises 19 countries (Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, United Kingdom, and United States) and European Union.

The G20 members represent around 85% of the global GDP, over 75% of the global trade, and about two-thirds of the world population.

The much-awaited event will see the participation of Heads of Government (HOGs), Heads of States (HOSs), Heads of International Organisations (HOIOs) and representatives of several guest countries.

In between all these multilateral engagements and a jampacked domestic schedule, PM Modi will embark on two key bilateral visits over the next two months.

US President Joe Biden will host the Indian Prime Minister for an Official State Visit to the United States, which will include a state dinner on June 22.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi meets with US President Joe Biden at the White House.

“The upcoming visit will affirm the deep and close partnership between the United States and India and the warm bonds of family and friendship that link Americans and Indians together,” said the White House recently.

Following that, PM Modi will attend this year’s Bastille Day Parade as Guest of Honour on July 14 in Paris at the invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron.

“Prime Minister’s visit is expected to herald the next phase in the France-India Strategic Partnership by setting new and ambitious goals for our strategic, cultural, scientific, academic, economic cooperation, including in a wide range of industries,” stated a joint India-France statement.

The unstoppable Indian juggernaut will roll onto 2024 with full force – a year which will witness PM Modi hosting leaders of the US, Australia, and Japan for the first-ever Quad Leaders’ Summit in India.
