 India slams UN Special Rapporteur’s remark on Srinagar G20 meet

India’s mission to United Nations slammed Special Rapporteur on Minority Issues over the comment on G20 meet in Srinagar and called it “baseless and unwanted.”

Taking to Twitter, the Indian mission to the UN in Geneva said, “We @IndiaUNGeneva strongly reject the statement issued by SR on minority issues @fernanddev & the baseless & unwarranted allegations in it. As G20 President, it’s India’s prerogative to host its meetings in any part of the country.” India accused UN’s Special Rapporteur on Minority Issues Fernand de Varennes of “acting irresponsibly” and politicising the Jammu and Kashmir issue.

“We are aghast that @fernanddev has acted irresponsibly to politicize this issue, misused his position as SR to publicize on social media his presumptive and prejudiced conclusions in a gross violation of the Code of Conduct for SRs,” he added.

Earlier, Varennes tweeted that holding a G20 meeting in Jammu and Kashmir while massive human rights violations are ongoing is lending support to attempts by India to normalize the brutal & repressive denial of democratic & other rights of Kashmiri Muslims and minorities.
“G20 should on the contrary uphold ‘International human rights obligations & the #UN Declaration of Human Rights should be upheld… and the situation in Jammu and Kashmir should be decried and condemned, not pushed under the rug and ignored with the holding of this meeting’,” he added.

Srinagar will be hosting the G20 meeting of the working group on tourism from May 22 to May 24. Last time also, Pakistan tried to create unnecessary noise regarding the G20 working group meeting during the SCO Foreign Minister Meeting, which took place on May 4 and 5 in Goa.

When Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari raised the issue, the external affairs minister S Jaishankar said, “I don’t think there is a G20 issue to debate with anybody, certainly not with a country which is nothing to do with G20. Jammu and Kashmir was, is, and will always be a part of India. The G20 meetings are held in all the Indian states and Union Territories, so it is completely natural that it is held there.” (ANI)

Global leader in India for key G20 meet

The G20 Foreign Ministers Meeting (FMM) is scheduled to take place in physical format from March 1-2, 2023 in New Delhi under India’s presidency….reports Asian Lite News

Foreign ministers of Canada, Argentina, Netherlands, Singapore and Bangladesh reached India for the Foreign Ministers’ meet under the G20 meeting on Wednesday.

Netherlands’ Foreign Minister Wopke Hoekstra, Canada’s Foreign Minister Melanie Joly, Argentinian  Foreign Minister Santiago Andres Cafiero, Singapore’s Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan and the Foreign Minister of Bangladesh Abul Kalam Abdul Momen reached India on Wednesday to participate in the Foreign Ministers’ meeting to be held under G20 during March 1 and 2 in the National Capital.

FM @SantiagoCafiero of Argentina @ArgentinaMFA, FM @melaniejoly of Canada @CanadaFP, FM @WBHoekstra of Netherlands @DutchMFA and FM @VivianBala of Singapore @MFAsg arrive in New Delhi for #G20FMM. FMs of Canada & Singapore will also attend #Raisina2023,” tweeted Arindam Bagchi, Spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs on Wednesday on the arrival of the Foreign Ministers of Canada, Argentina, Singapore, Bangladesh.

Foreign Ministers UK, Brazil, Mauritius, Mexico, South Korea and International Labour Organisation’s G20 Sherpa Richard Marc Samans also arrived in New Delhi on Tuesday.

The G20 Foreign Ministers Meeting (FMM) is scheduled to take place in physical format from March 1-2, 2023 in New Delhi under India’s presidency.

Representatives of 40 countries, including non-G20 members have been invited by India, and multilateral organisations will also attend.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to address the foreign ministers of the member countries of G20 and he will talk about India’s growing influence globally.

The foreign ministers are also likely to discuss ways to deal with falling economic growth, increasing inflation, lower demands for goods and services as well as increasing prices of food, fuel and fertilisers. (ANI)

Australian Foreign minister to attend G20 meet

Australia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Penny Wong, will this week travel to India and Malaysia. Wong stated that she looks forward to meeting her counterparts at the G20 Foreign Ministers meeting in New Delhi.

She will also attend the 2023 Raisina Dialogue. “This week I will travel to Malaysia and India to advance Australia’s bilateral relationships and promote Australia’s interests in a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region,” Penny Wong said in the press release.

Weng said she looks forward to working with her counterparts on how they can address contemporary international challenges, including strengthening the multilateral system, food and energy security, and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. She stated that Australia strongly supports India’s G20 Presidency and welcomes India’s ambitious, action-oriented G20 agenda under the theme ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’.

Further, in the press release, Wong stated, “This will be my first visit to India as Foreign Minister, and I look forward to meeting my counterparts at the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi.”

She said, “While in New Delhi, I will also attend the 2023 Raisina Dialogue, India’s premier forum for addressing the most challenging issues facing our regional and global community”, adding, “This year is an important milestone in Australia’s bilateral relationship with India, with many high-level Ministerial visits between our two countries.”

Wong said Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Minister for Trade and Tourism Don Farrell and Minister for Resources Madeleine King will travel to India over the next month. She further stated Australia looks forward to hosting Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he attends the Quad Leaders’ meeting.

Wong said her visit to Malaysia will reaffirm shared priorities under Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Wong stressed that she looks forward to holding introductory meetings with members of the new Malaysian government, including the Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Economy. She noted that Australia is committed to working with Malaysia to support ASEAN’s contribution to regional peace and security.

“These meetings will focus on advancing our significant trade and economic links, cooperation on defence and regional security, and the close ties between our peoples,” Wong stated in the press release.

On February 18, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar called on Wong in Sydney. Jaishankar gifted her a cricket bat signed by Indian captain Rohit Sharma while his Australian counterpart gifted him an Australian cricket jersey with ‘Jaishankar’ written on it. (ANI)
