Indian UN Employee First Foreign Victim in Gaza Conflict

The victim was identified as Col. Waibhav Anil Kale, who had started working a month ago as a security coordinator for the UN in Gaza…reports Arul Louis

An Indian working for the United Nations in Gaza has become the first non-Palestinian staffer to be killed during the current Gaza conflict when his vehicle was attacked on its way to a hospital in Rafah.

The victim was identified as Col. Waibhav Anil Kale, who had started working a month ago as a security coordinator for the UN in Gaza, according to The Washington Post, which quoted unnamed informed sources.

Kale, who worked for the UN Department of Safety and Security (DSS) joins the roster of more than 200 Indians who have died in the service of the UN.

The majority of them – 179 – are peacekeepers but many other Indian civilians, who like employees of the DSS are not peacekeepers, have died working for the UN in various capacities in trouble spots.

Earlier, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’s Spokesperson Farhan Haq, who announced the death, did not identify him pending notification to his family and government.

Haq said that Guterres condemned the attack and called for a full investigation.

Another UN employee was injured in the Monday attack, he said.

The blame for the attack has not been fixed because the situation remains murky in Rafah.

Haq did not say who carried out the attack.

Al Jazeera broadcast clips showing windows with bullet holes on the attacked vehicle flying UN flags and bearing large UN markings.

From the nature of the damage, it did not appear to have been an air or heavy artillery attack.

He said that Monday’s victim was the first international employee of the UN killed in Gaza since October 7, although 188 Palestinian employees of the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), the UN arm for humanitarian services for Palestinians, have been killed.

“We will be working with the authorities on the ground to get restitution for all of those who have been killed,” Haq declared.

The Post said that according to its sources, Kale was a 46-year-old father of two teenage children.

Other media reports said that he had earlier worked for the Indian Army.

Israel Defense Forces said that according to an initial inquiry, Monday’s attack happened in an active combat zone and that it was not made aware of the vehicle’s movement.

Haq said that the DSS staffers were in the vehicle with clear UN markings that was in a convoy engaged in “their regular work [for which] they go to different locations to assess security conditions. And this was the European Hospital in Rafah”.

Asked what the UN was doing to seek justice for the UN employees killed in the conflict, Haq said, “In all cases, we are going to set up measures for accountability”.

“A lot of that, as you know, requires ultimately for an end to the conflict so that we can work these out,” he said.

Guterres reiterated his call for a humanitarian ceasefire and the release of the hostages taken by Hamas, which sparked the conflict with an attack on Israel in which about 1,200 people were killed and 128 were kidnapped.

Israel’s retaliation on Gaza, from where Hamas launched the attack, has killed about 34,000 Palestinians, most of them women, children or the aged.

Last month, four foreigners and three Palestinians working for a non-profit organisation, were killed in Gaza.

Egypt Reiterates Opposition to Gaza Displacement, Calls for Ceasefire Talks

Israel has been fighting with Hamas in the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023, after the Palestinian faction launched a surprise attack on southern Israel that killed about 1,200 people…reports Asian Lite News

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry has reiterated his country’s rejection of any attempt to displace Palestinians from the Gaza Strip.

In a televised press conference that was also attended by visiting German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock in the Egyptian capital Cairo, Shoukry said on Tuesday that they had discussed the situation in Gaza, Israel’s ongoing military campaign in the coastal enclave and its devastating humanitarian repercussions.

The two officials also discussed the delivery of relief aid to the besieged Gaza Strip, means to maintain the unity of Gaza and the West Bank, and efforts to restore “political perspectives” related to the two-state solution, according to the Egyptian Foreign Minister.

In addition, the two sides talked about achieving a ceasefire in Gaza, regional developments and the security of Red Sea navigation, Xinhua news agency reported.

Baerbock added that while both countries should cooperate to bring about peace, there are not enough humanitarian supplies to meet the needs of the about two million Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip. Therefore, coordinated action is needed to avoid obstructing the flow of relief to those in need.

Israel has been fighting with Hamas in the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023, after the Palestinian faction launched a surprise attack on southern Israel that killed about 1,200 people.

The Israeli army has so far killed more than 23,000 Palestinians in its military operations in the enclave, the Gaza-based Health Ministry said on Monday.

Elon Musk Invited to Witness Gaza’s Reality

A senior Hamas official, Osama Hamdan, extended an invitation to Musk during a press conference held in Beirut on Tuesday….reports Asian Lite News

Following Elon Musk’s visit to Israel, the tech billionaire has now been invited by Hamas to Gaza to witness the destruction of the besieged enclave territory under Israeli attacks.

According to The Guardian, Musk was invited by a senior Hamas official Osama Hamdan, during a press conference in Beirut on Tuesday.

“We invite him to visit Gaza to see the extent of the massacres and destruction committed against the people of Gaza, in compliance with the standards of objectivity and credibility,” Hamdan said.

However, in response to a post about the news inviting him, Musk stated that the situation “seems a bit dangerous there right now.”

“Seems a bit dangerous there right now, but I do believe that a long-term prosperous Gaza is good for all sides,” he wrote on X.

Musk on Monday visited the Kfar Aza in Israel, which was one of the first places to be attacked by the Hamas militant group when it launched its unprecedented attack on October 7.

More than 1,200 people have died in Israel, while over 200 others were taken as hostages.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accompanied him to the residence of Ofir Liebstein, who fought back and died while fighting Hamas.

Musk has been severely criticised for anti-Semitic content on X in recent weeks. He also came under rising fire for supposed failures to combat antisemitism on X.

US President Joe Biden’s administration recently slammed Musk of repeating a “hideous lie” about Jewish people, as the X owner continues to endorse far-right viewpoints and agrees with posts that promote antisemitism.

Musk replied to a post sharing an antisemitic conspiracy theory, calling it “actual truth”.

He responded to a conspiracy theory that motivated the man who killed 11 people at a Pittsburgh synagogue in 2018.

UAE Expedites Gaza Hospital Construction

The UAE has sent 6 additional aircraft to support and speed up the construction of a field hospital in Gaza to support the Palestinian people….reports Asian Lite News

The UAE yesterday sent six additional aircraft carrying supplies and equipment to support the construction of the field hospital, set to be established in the Gaza Strip. The aircraft, which departed from Abu Dhabi and are bound for Al-Arish International Airport, Egypt, are part of the UAE’s Operation “Gallant Knight 3”, launched by the UAE to support the Palestinian people.

The UAE sent five aircraft, which arrived at Al-Arish International Airport earlier this week, carrying the equipment and supplies required to operate the field hospital, in line with the UAE’s drive to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people and support the health sector in the Gaza Strip.

The field hospital, with a 150-bed capacity, is set to be established in multiple stages. It will encompass departments for general surgery, orthopaedics, paediatrics, and gynaecology, in addition to anaesthesia and intensive care units catering to both children and adults. The facility will also house clinics for internal medicine, dentistry, psychiatry, and family medicine. Supplementary services will include CT imaging, a laboratory, a pharmacy, and other medical support functions.

The UAE previously announced the provision of urgent aid to the Palestinian people, amounting to $20 million, and an initiative to bring approximately 1,000 Palestinian children from the Gaza Strip – accompanied by their families – for medical treatment at UAE hospitals. Additionally, a community relief campaign for Palestinians affected by the current conflict has been launched in the UAE under the slogan ‘Compassion for Gaza’.

‘Average of 160 kids dying per day’

The World Health Organization (WHO) said that as the raging Israel-Hamas conflict has completed a month since it erupted on October 7, more than 10,000 people, or some 0.5 per cent of the total population in the besieged enclave, have reportedly been killed, with an average of 160 children dying per day.

So far, 16 health workers have been killed on duty, and the WHO is working to support health workers in Gaza and once again pleading for their safety, the world body’s spokesperson Christian Lindmeier said during a press briefing in Geneva.

Lindmeier said 102 attacks against healthcare had been recorded in Gaza, 121 in the West Bank, and 25 in Israel. At the moment, 14 hospitals in Gaza were not functioning, due to the lack of fuel or the damages, he added.

Noting that Tuesday marked a month since the war, the WHO official said that people in the Jewish nation were frightened and worried about more than 200 hostages, reiterating the call for the immediate release of all the hostages, many of whom need urgent medical attention.

He also said that some doctors in Gaza have been performing operations, including amputations, without anesthesia. “Nothing justifies the horror being endured by civilians in Gaza,” Lindmeier said, stressing their “desperate need for water, fuel, food and safe access to health care to survive”.

The WHO spokesman reiterated the UN’s calls for “unhindered, safe and secure access” for some 500 trucks of aid a day — not only across the border but also “all the way through to the patients in the hospitals”, where surgeries including amputations were being performed without anesthesia.

The level of death and suffering is “hard to fathom”, he added.

According to the Gaza-based Palestinian Health Ministry, the death toll since the beginning of the conflict stood at 10,328 as of Wednesday morning, with 24,408 people injured. Of the total fatalities, 67 per cent are said to be children and women, the Ministry said, adding that some 2,450 people, including 1,350 kids, have been reported missing and may be trapped or dead under the rubble.

Overall, about 1,400 Israelis and foreign nationals have been killed in the Jewish nation, according to authorities.  The names of 1,159 of these fatalities have been released, including 828 civilians. The death toll among Israeli soldiers in Gaza remains 30, official Israeli sources have confirmed.

Some 240 people are held captive in Gaza, including Israelis and foreign nationals. Media reports indicate that about 30 of the hostages are children. So far, four civilian hostages have been released by Hamas, and a female Israeli soldier was rescued by Israeli forces. Hamas has claimed that 57 of the hostages were killed by Israeli airstrikes.

Barakat Trust to launch digital exhibit on Gaza strip in Palestine

Seif El Rashidi, Director of Barakat Trust said  “The Barakat Trust is very happy to showcase the stories of heritage and community in Gaza on the Google Arts & Culture platform…reports Asian Lite News

Google Arts & Culture announced today the launch of a digital exhibit by the Barakat Trust about the Gaza strip in Palestine. The project, which is Barakat Trust’s inaugural collection on Google Arts & Culture will help more people around the world learn about Palestinian culture and heritage.

To produce the digital exhibit, the Barakat Trust, a charity organization that focuses on the Islamic world’s education and heritage, worked with professionals and experts in Gaza to document a range of the city’s architectural and cultural facets through firsthand accounts from the city’s residents available in Arabic and English.

People can hear from Gazan engineers, academics and journalists about their experience growing up in the city, their history and shared memories of living through war. It also features a series of videos and stories about preservation efforts in the Gaza strip and the difficulties facing local preservation experts who are working to restore and maintain local heritage sites.

“We all need to support Gaza in a different way[s]. Not only [with] food and medicine, but also to safeguard its identity and cultural heritage. This project funded by the Barakat Trust is very important to us – to help make our voices reach outside of Gaza” said Muneer Elbaz, a participant in Barkat’s Trust’s project, Architect, Urban Planner and  Lecturer at UCAS.

One of the main heritage sites in Gaza is Palestine’s oldest mosque – the Omari mosque. Established in 1277 A.D, the mosque has a history similar to that of Turkey’s Aya Sofia, where it was used for different religious purposes over the years – from temple, to church, to mosque, to church then to mosque again.  The collection also delves into local conservation efforts in the city, including efforts to digitally preserve religious manuscripts found in the Omari mosque and historical buildings.

Seif El Rashidi, Director of Barakat Trust said  “The Barakat Trust is very happy to showcase the stories of heritage and community in Gaza on the Google Arts & Culture platform. We have supported conservation and heritage education efforts in this historic city for several years and are delighted by the change these projects are bringing to the city. This collection of stories highlights both the history of Gaza and the dynamic people involved in preserving its diverse heritage. We see the platform [Google Arts & Culture]  as a great way to enable the discovery of overlooked places, and to spark interest.”

People can also discover Gaza’s history as a port city and the role played by Souk Al Qissaariya as a hub for trade between east and west with products such as frankincense, myrrh, spices, precious stones and textiles all making their way through the city.

Commenting on the importance of the collection, Chance Coughenour, Head of Preservation at Google Arts & Culture said “These stories illustrate the diversity of challenges local experts are facing to safeguard cultural heritage, ranging from the Great Omari Mosque Manuscripts to the Souk al-Qissariya, and how The Barakat Trust is supporting them. We’re proud that by offering a digital platform, Google Arts & Culture can help more people around the world to learn about the life and efforts of Gazans.”

Google Arts & Culture helps put the treasures, stories and knowledge of over 2,900 cultural institutions from 80 countries into the hands of people around the world. Google Arts & Culture works as an innovation partner for cultural institutions by working on technologies that help preserve and share culture in new ways.

The launch of the Barakat Trust’s digital exhibit is Google Arts & Culture’s most recent effort to help showcase and support the preservation of contemporary culture and ancient heritage of the Middle East. Previous digital exhibitions include the Dalloul Art Foundation in Lebanon, the National Library & Archives and Dubai Culture & Arts Authority in the United Arab Emirates, the Art & Soul of Mosul, Iraq, and Preserving Egypt’s Layered History in Egypt. The Gaza stories are available on the Google Arts & Culture website and its app (Android and iOS).
