GMC: Environment, Tech, Creation Take Centre Stage

The first day of the Global Media Congress (GMC) concluded at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) after a lively series of presentations, panel discussions and keynote speeches that brought together renowned figures from the world of media, communication, and technology.

The day began with a keynote speech from Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, who welcomed the Congress participants to the event and emphasised the media’s power to foster international cooperation, the sharing of essential values and interests, and an appreciation of human achievements across national boundaries.

Adding his welcome to that of Sheikh Nahyan in a further keynote speech, Mohammed Jalal Al Rayssi, Director-General of Emirates News Agency (WAM) and Chairman of the Higher Organising Committee for the Global Media Congress, observed that “our gathering today at this important global event gives us great scope to share ideas on contemporary challenges faced by the media sector along with investment opportunities that to help us advance best professional practices across multiple media sectors. We will also examine how we can build a future media industry that shares knowledge and information in ways that maximize the happiness of peoples and sustain the development of societies.”

With the first day of the Congress taking in conjunction with COP28, there was a special focus on the role that the media can play in addressing environmental issues and climate change.

This year’s Congress will also host 5 accompanying features – some being held for the first time – which include the innovation and startups platform with over 24 startups, the training and education feature with more than 30 workshops, the Future Media Labs with elite-level discussions in six closed sessions, the influencer innovation feature with dedicated dialogue sessions, and a new media sessions and round tables feature with experts, speakers, innovators and global media leaders.

The special session held as part of the Congress’s opening saw a discussion on interactive applications of artificial intelligence technologies by a diverse group of speakers drawn from Asia, Europe, Africa, the Americas and Australia. These speakers covered the impact of the development of AI on the media as a driver of new practices across the sector, especially in terms of data analysis and the transformation of data into reliable media stories capable of generating the desired impact and interaction.

A ministerial panel discussion was held on “Government Communication Tools for Sensitizing Audiences on Climate Change”. The panel was moderated by Mustafa Al-Rawi, Acting Managing Director of CNN Business Arabic and saw Jorge Rodríguez Vives from Costa Rica, Wang Yibiao from China, and Suzana Vasiljevic from Serbia sharing a lively discussion in how media can raise climate change awareness. Vives noted that 25% of Costa Rica’s territory is now a national park, while Yibiao commented that China had greened more than 2 billion acres of land over the past decade. Vasiljevic told the audience that Serbia was collaborating with many UAE companies to overcome climate challenges.

Professor Charlie Beckett, Professor of Practice and Director of Polis at the London School of Economics in the UK, gave a keynote presentation on the Polis/LSE Journalism AI project that highlighted the project’s latest findings and implications given the ongoing significant shift towards the integration of AI in journalism. Beckett noted that while generative AI could help newsrooms with content production, such technology could not be relied on for accuracy without human intervention.

In addition, Laura Nix’s presentation on sustainable content production stressed the importance of environmental awareness in media. Nix advocated solutions-based storytelling with a focus on changemakers able to educate their audiences audience by practically addressing existential climate change issues in humane and empathetic ways.

At the Create Stage, the UAE Space Agency, with a focus on innovation and future technologies, hosted a fireside chat on using social media to inspire new generations. On the same platform, in a presentation entitled ‘How to Reach 1 million Viewers for Your First Video’, renowned social media influencers, Alaa and Sarah shared their inspiring journey towards achieving 500 million views within two years across all their channels. The duo said while their entry into the world of content creation was initially marked by a lack of technical knowledge, they soon turned their fortunes around through persistence, setting achievable goals, and, above all, prioritizing the script is the most vital component to win audiences.

The day concluded with a vibrant panel discussion on “Youth Voices” that featured influencers leading climate crisis communications and showcased how young creators are shaping the narrative on climate change.

‘GMC Offers Inspiring Vision of Media’s Future’

The second edition of the Global Media Congress (GMC) offers a global platform for discussing the future of the media sector, with a focus on news agencies.

These agencies play a key role in delivering accurate and insightful media messages to the public at national, regional, and international levels. They are also the major source of trustworthy news around the world, as confirmed by the heads of Arab and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) news agencies.

In their statements, the heads of several news agencies stressed that the global event will offer inspiring new insights for managing the global media sector through diverse sessions, seminars, and workshops that reflect the significant role of media technology in content creation. This, in turn, requires responsible and professional work in line with the ethics of the journalism profession.

Dr. Fatma Saud Al Salem, Director-General of the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), stressed that GMC offers an unparalleled opportunity to envision the future of the media sector through holding a series of workshops, panel discussions, and seminars featuring a range of international media experts.

The GMC will give journalists and media professionals from around the world the opportunity to share ideas, especially those from news agencies that play a key role in delivering credible and insightful media messages, lauding the opportunity to learn from successful international media experiences by joining sessions that covered various topics and explored media developments.

She then thanked WAM for hosting and organising GMC and lauded the pillars of its second edition, which highlighted in-depth insights about the future of the media.

Abdulla Khalil Buhejji, Director-General of the Bahrain News Agency (BNA), said that during GMC 2023, he aims to explore recent developments in the international media sector.

He is confident that GMC’s second edition will present new insights about the future of the media, he added, noting that BNA will participate in an exhibition taking place on the sidelines of GMC 2023 to exchange expertise and benefit from the advanced technologies showcased by international firms.

Dr. Farid Ayar, Secretary-General of the Federation of Arab News Agencies (FANA), stressed that the second edition of GMC is a key platform for discussing the ideal ways of supporting media outlets and strengthening their role as an important tool for developing people-to-people ties.

GMC 2023 also plays a role in advancing the global media sector by hosting various sessions and seminars with media experts, he added, explaining that a roundtable discussion with the leaders of federations and news agencies will be part of the global event, where they will explore ways to enhance cooperation and improve their agencies’ work in delivering credible news and combatting misinformation.

He then expressed his optimism for the upcoming GMC, which he believes will generate innovative ideas to support international media systems, while commending the UAE for organising the significant media event, which has established its stature as an important platform for stakeholders in the global media sector to present their views and ideas.

These contributions, in turn, have helped advance the sector and maximised its role in the advancement and progress of societies, he further added.

The Director-General of the Moroccan News Agency, Fouad Aarif, said that the Global Media Congress is being convened at a critical moment for the media sector.

He emphasised the relevance of the issue that the current session addresses, among other key topics, the spread of misinformation. This phenomenon affects the security of societies, and the event seeks to find effective ways to counter and reduce its impact.

The Director of the National Media Agency in Lebanon, Zeyad Harfoush, thanked the UAE for the outstanding organisation.

Media’s Role in Climate Change Reporting

Dr. Ramzan bin Abdulla Al Nuaimi, Minister of Information of Bahrain, stated that the convening of the Global Media Congress (GMC) a head of the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) provide an fiting opportunity to spotlight on the role media can play in raising awareness about environmental and climate change issues.

In a statement, Dr. Ramzan Al Nuaimi said the GMC 2023 meets the important needs of the media community and carries a qualitative value that articulates the shared visions and policies of the Emirati and Bahraini leaderships regarding the diplomatic and intellectual leadership.

On COP28, the Bahraini Minister of Information expressed Manama’s support for the UAE’s hosting of the UN climate change summit out of its conviction that the UAE has the ability, clear-cut visions and ambitions and diplomacy to reach agreements and goals that can be implemented on the ground.

Noting the GMC’s focus on the environmental media and sustainability, he said Bahrain places the UAE’s hosting of COP28 at the top of its media priorities, adding that Bahrain TV dedicates a special coverage on COP28 and suitability.

AlNeyadi hails Media’s Role Country’s Development

Emirati astronaut Sultan AlNeyadi, the first Arab to serve on the International Space Station (ISS) for a 6-month mission, has appreciated the role of the media in supporting the country’s development efforts in various fields.

Participating in a dialogue session as part of the Global Media Congress’s inaugural day activities, AlNeyadi engaged in a conversation moderated by Emirati journalist Faisal bin Hariz under the theme “Reflecting on my Space Journey.”

He said that the most captivating image he captured from space was a photograph of the UAE. He emphasised that the homeland is the most exquisite sight on Earth.

AlNeyadi emphasised that the UAE’s wise leadership paved the way for Emiratis to succeed and excel and provided us with all forms of support and care to achieve qualitative achievements for the nation.

He touched on his historic mission, “Zayed’s Ambition Mission 2,” and the most important experiences he went through on board the ISS during a 6-month mission that was considered the longest in the Arab world.

AlNeyadi explained that his dream since childhood was to become a pilot. He chose to study engineering, and he benefited greatly during his work in this field for 20 years.

He added, “The dream starts from childhood, and we must develop it and invest in opportunities to achieve success and excellence.”

Global Media Congress Opens Today

The Global Media Congress this year witnesses a remarkable 33% surge, with 257 brands and companies exhibiting, a significant leap from the inaugural edition. Participation from 172 countries, a 22% increase, includes 31 nations making their debut….reports Asian Lite News

The second edition of the Global Media Congress starts today at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre – ADNEC.

Organised by the Emirates News Agency (WAM) and Capital Events of the ADNEC Group and taking place over three days, the first morning will open with a Keynote Speech from Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence. In keeping with Day One’s focus on environmental media in conjunction with COP28, a panel session with young influencers will discuss content creation to address climate challenges and an international media discussion on sensitising audiences to climate change. The important role of think tanks in climate action will be covered in a further panel discussion.

Mohammed Jalal Al Rayssi, Director-General of Emirates News Agency (WAM) and Chairman of the Higher Organising Committee for the Global Media Congress, stated, “We are very proud to welcome today decision makers, major corporations, thought leaders, and innovators to an event that is already an essential global forum for the media sector. Elsewhere at the Congress, the Create Stage will host a session on the evolving role of creators in digital marketing, while the Educate Stage features a series of interactive presentations on subjects ranging from content evaluation, format adoptions and media futures to key content delivery technologies, immersive technology, virtual production and co-productions. Workshops will delve into sustainability and climate media, the power of youth storytelling, subscription strategies and ChatGPT among other topics.

The number of exhibiting companies and brands participating in this year’s Global Media Congress has increased by 33 percent to reach 257 brands compared to the first edition of Congress last year. The number of countries participating in the event has also increased by 22 percent to reach 172 countries, with this year’s edition seeing the participation of 31 countries for the first time. In addition, the total surface area covered by the exhibition has increased by 78 percent this year to amount to more than 32,000 square meters.

The current Congress will feature an event dedicated to the largest buyers in the media sector, with over 400 major buyers from all over the world expected to attend. Also, more than 77 speakers representing media industry leaders from 18 countries will participate in the conference sessions held over the next three days. 36 main sessions will address several key topics further topics in addition to environmental media and sustainability; these being innovation and the latest technologies in the media sector, youth participation in the future of the media, and media work training and development.

Five accompanying features – some being held for the first time – will also be hosted at the Congress, with the most prominent being the innovation and startups platform hosting more than 24 startups and with national companies constituting 36 percent of the companies attending. A second platform will be dedicated to training and education, with more than 30 training workshops including up to 40 global trainees in each meeting under the supervision of 25 experts and specialised global media institutions.

The third feature is the Future Media Labs, which will host elite-level discussions by sector executives, policymakers, and entrepreneurs from around the world in six closed sessions. A fourth feature will be dedicated to influencer innovation through a creative platform for content developers enabling them to communicate, collaborate, and share their experiences and goals with emerging influencers through 21 dialogue sessions involving 19 speakers. A fifth feature will involve 4 new media sessions and round table discussions being held with 32 experts and speakers to explore sector challenges and opportunities in the presence of a prominent panel of innovators and decision-makers from various global media entities.

Comprehensive and in-depth coverage of the Global Media Congress will be distributed worldwide by nearly 800 media professionals drawn from 58 countries, an increase of 8 percent compared to last year.
