UAE minister Mohammad bin Abdullah Al Gergawi stressed that countries and governments need to develop a collective action charter to enhance their readiness for the future…reports Asian Lite News
Mohammad bin Abdullah Al Gergawi, Minister of Cabinet Affairs, and Professor Klaus Schwab, Founder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum, stated that the UAE has a global mission to work and cooperate with governments, institutions and individuals worldwide to design a better future for humanity.
By its Centennial, the UAE hopes to become the best country in the world, bringing together people to live in harmony and tolerance and presenting a model future nation.
This came during the inauguration of the “Great Narrative Meetings”, launched on Thursday, in collaboration between the UAE government and the World Economic Forum, and in the presence of UAE government ministers and officials, and a myriad of global thought leaders, specialists and futurists to shape the most important future directions in various fields.
He stressed that governments first and foremost should instill hope in people, design comprehensive plans and strategies that meet the needs of the 7.8 billion people living on this planet, and develop solutions to global challenges.
“The world is facing major challenges especially when it comes to climate change. Over the past seven years, the world recorded the highest temperatures globally and we cannot afford to waste any more time. The richest 1% have more than double the wealth of 7 billion people, and about half of the world’s population lives under 6 dollars a day. The world has been through one of the largest economic downturns in human history. According to IMF estimates, the global economy has decreased by 3.5% in 2020 due to the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic and many countries are still having difficulty restoring their position to its status before the pandemic,” Al Gergawi added.
The Minister of Cabinet Affairs explained that the digital world has become as important as the physical one. There are already more connected devices than people in the world. By 2025, this number is expected to reach 5 times the world’s population. Despite all these facts, half the world’s population is still denied access to the internet, and only 20 percent of the population in developing countries has internet connection. Bridging this digital gap will assuredly open up new markets and create diverse opportunities.
Al Gergawi said: “Whatever will happen in the future will be based on what we design now, on our work today. The traditional model of government that began 200 years ago has to evolve, just as the business model of institutions and companies in the private sector managed to re-invent their work ecosystems”. He noted that governments will have an increasingly important role over the coming phase due to the events the world witnessed during the pandemic. Governments capable of anticipating the future can best evolve and face potential challenges.
Al Gergawi stressed that countries and governments need to develop a collective action charter to enhance their readiness for the future. The UAE’s 10 Principles for the Next 50 Years constitutes a clear path for the UAE government, based on enhancing human capital and providing a better future through preserving openness and tolerance.
UAE Global Leadership Professor Klaus Schwab, Founder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum, stated that the UAE is one of the most vibrant and inclusive countries worldwide. He added, “We meet today to develop a great narrative; a story for the future. I quote His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, when H.H. said “The future belongs to those who can imagine it, design it, and execute it. We are here now to imagine the future, design the future, and then execute.”
Prof. Schwab praised the meeting for bringing together a group of influential experts who can present the latest technologies to the participants, thus enabling them to shape the future and serve humanity.
“When the World Economic Forum presented the concept of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) for the first time, the aim was to help countries and companies to effectively use technology for the benefit of humanity. We decided to establish a network of C4IR around the world, and I was very happy that the UAE was the first country to adopt this approach and establish the UAE Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, re-affirming the role of science and technology in our mission,” he added Schwab continued: “When we look at the world today, we see difficulties to shape the future. The three most striking difficulties are, many people became much more self-centered as a result of the global pandemic. In such a situation it is hard to create a compromise because shaping and designing the future usually needs a common will of people. The second difficulty is that we have all become crises-focused because of the pandemic, and are not dealing with other challenges that threaten humanity. The third challenge lies in the fact that the world has become very complex, it has become difficult to separate between social, political, technological or ecological challenges. They are all interconnected, and simple solutions do not suffice to deal with complex problems. For these three reasons, it has become very difficult to bring everyone together to imagine and design the future.”
The “Great Narrative Meeting” hosts interactive sessions and expert workshops covering numerous vital society-related fields. The meeting is attended by UAE ministers, and brings together more than 50 thought leaders and futurists to share their visions and thoughts for shaping long-term future narratives in vital sectors for the benefit of societies worldwide.
An Indian-origin partner in a global consulting firm has been arrested and charged in an alleged insider trading scheme that netted him about $450,000…reports Asian Lite News
“Puneet Dikshit has been charged with serious felonies for his alleged conduct” of exploiting insider information about a pending acquisition, New York Federal Prosecutor Damian Williams said on Wednesday.
He was produced before Federal Magistrate Judge Kevin Fox, who set a bail of $1 million.
According to a LinkedIn profile, he worked for McKinsey & Company, one of the largest global consulting firms.
Court papers said that Dikshit’s company had been hired by Goldman Sachs to advise it on the acquisition of GreenSky, a company traded on the NASDAQ stock exchange, and that he had used insider information to trade options on that company’s stocks.
After making some small trades, he bought call options – which are essentially bets on the stock prices going up – in accounts in his and his spouse’s name for about $24,647 about two days before the Goldman Sach’s announcement on September 15 that it was acquiring GreenSky in a $2.24 billion deal, according to court papers.
After the announcement when the stock prices shot up, he sold the call options at a profit of 1,829 per cent, netting about $450,000, court papers said.
“Dikshit now faces significant federal charges, which should serve as a warning to others considering similar conduct,” said Michael J. Driscoll, the assistant director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Dikshit, 40, is facing two separate charges, each of which carries a maximum prison sentence of 20 years.
Besides the criminal case filed by the prosecutor, he is facing a civil case launched by the Securities and Exchange Commission seeking monetary penalties.
The lure of easy money from insider trading, using confidential information to manipulate stock prices or make a profit, has been the undoing of several leading figures in the US world, among them several people of Indian origin.
The most famous among them to get entangled in insider trading is Rajat Gupta, who was the first foreign-born person to head McKinsey.
He was sentenced to two years after being convicted of insider trading in 2012 and spent about a year and a half in prison and the rest of the term under house arrest.
Anil Kumar, a senior partner and director at McKinsey, who was involved in the same case turned approver and testified against Gupta. He was sentenced to two years of probation.

UAE leaders say the country is ready to host global climate change conference Cop28 in 2023, if selected.
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, and Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, said the Emirates was geared up to help drive plans to protect the planet.
Sheikh Mohammed said the Emirates has won international backing for its bid to stage the event in 2023.
The UAE is currently playing a leading role in the current conference, Cop26, in Glasgow, Scotland.
Efforts to protect the planet and slow climate change remain at the forefront of the international agenda.
“The UAE has submitted a request to host the Cop28 conference in 2023, the largest global conference of heads of state and government on climate and environmental issues,” Sheikh Mohammed posted on Twitter.
He said the UAE was primed to welcome the world in two years time to help shape green plans for the years to come.
“Many countries have supported our request, and we are looking forward to announcing the selection of the host country within the next two days,” said Sheikh Mohammed.
“The UAE will be ready for the global event if it wins the hosting.”
His sentiments were shared by Sheikh Mohamed, who underlined the UAE’s desire to combat climate change.
“The host country for Cop28 in 2023 will soon be chosen,” said Sheikh Mohamed on Twitter.
“As a nation committed to international co-operation and positive action, the UAE is ready and willing to host this crucial global gathering aimed at accelerating efforts to address our planet’s shared climate challenges.”Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Special Envoy for Climate Change, delivered an open invitation from the UAE to the world for partnership to find sustainable solutions that will tackle climate change and create sustainable economic growth with positive social impact.
Earlier, Dr. Al Jaber made the invitation when he delivered the UAE’s National Statement to the 26th session of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow.
He conveyed to delegates warm greetings from the leadership, government and people of the UAE, as the country focuses on building international cooperation, and developing valuable partnerships to advance global progress, in the same spirit in which the UAE has welcomed the world to Expo 2020 Dubai – ‘connecting minds, creating the future’.
Dr. Al Jaber also expressed sincere gratitude towards the Asia Pacific Group of nations for their endorsement of the UAE’s bid to host COP28 in 2023.
He told COP26 delegates, “We are proud to have been endorsed as the hosts of COP28 by the Asia Pacific Group of nations. I would also like to pay tributes to all partners and friends backing our nation’s bid. We look forward to upcoming sessions and discussions with the aim of securing international support for our offer to be confirmed as the host of COP28 by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The UAE is honoured to welcome all parties to work on developing an ambitious agenda for COP28 in 2023 that will accelerate the development of practical solutions and make crucial progress on climate action”.
Dr. Al Jaber highlighted the UAE’s expertise in climate action, its focus on sustainable growth, and its capabilities and potential for hosting the world’s largest and most important international climate change event. He said, “Our nation’s Founding Father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, set out the principles of sustainability in all sectors. These principles have been integral to our nation’s efforts in protecting the environment, diversifying energy sources, and developing policies to reduce the impact of climate change. The effects of climate change transcend borders, and are relevant to all nations, small or large, developed or developing, rich or poor.”
The visionary UAE leadership views climate action as an opportunity for sustainable economic and social growth, and this drives the country’s climate strategy.
Dr. Al Jaber said that global climate action must address the different needs of all stakeholders. He told delegates, “We should avoid a one-size-fits-all approach.”
He said the UAE has entered a new era of transition in the energy sector. “We view this as an opportunity to focus on new paths towards the future. We believe that investing in low-carbon solutions in the energy sector will drive economic prosperity. Launched last October, the UAE ‘Net Zero by 2050’ Strategic Initiative reflects the vision of our leadership and the ambitions we have outlined for the ‘Next 50’ years of our nation. It is also an open call from the UAE to the world for partnership and cooperation to find sustainable solutions, while creating incentives for economic growth.”
The UAE has pledged to make climate security a priority when it joins the UN Security Council in 2023. Fulfilling the US$100 billion pledge by developed nations to support climate action in developing countries will play a vital role in mitigating and adapting to the impacts of climate change. In addition, there is a strong need to create an investment ecosystem to support sustainable growth.
