50 kids to get new life through Golden Heart Initiative

The Initiative focused on children from conflict zones and underprivileged backgrounds, spanning cultural and geographical boundaries…reports Asian Lite News

Through the Golden Heart Initiative, 50 children with complex congenital heart diseases will be given the opportunity for a new life. The ‘Golden Heart Initiative’ is a global philanthropic mission launched on January 1, 2024, by Dr. Shamsheer Vayalil, a healthcare visionary and the Founder and Chairman of Burjeel Holdings

The Initiative focused on children from conflict zones and underprivileged backgrounds, spanning cultural and geographical boundaries.

Spearheaded by experts, the surgeries were performed at public and private hospitals in Tunisia, Egypt, and India. Children from conflict zones such as Senegal, Libya, and Tunisia, and underprivileged families from Egypt and India were the beneficiaries of the Initiative that concluded within three months. Navigating stringent travel restrictions posed challenges in bringing the children from conflict zones to hospitals for their much-needed surgeries. Special travel permissions had to be obtained through various agencies to support these families. In India, the Initiative collaborated with government departments to offer high-cost life-saving surgeries that are not covered under existing schemes.

Children aged two months and upward with complex congenital heart diseases such as severe aortic stenosis, a condition where the aortic valve narrows disrupting the normal flow of blood; Tetralogy of Fallot, a condition that affects normal blood flow through the heart; and atrioventricular (AV) canal defect, where a hole in the wall separates the heart’s chambers causing problems with the heart valves, were some of the Initiative’s recipients.

Commenting on the project, Dr. Tarig Ali Elhassan, a renowned cardiac surgeon who headed the medical assessment board of the Initiative, said, “We feel proud to support these children in the time of their need with world-class treatment. After announcing the Initiative, we received numerous requests from different parts of the world. We thoroughly reviewed each medical record and shortlisted the candidates based on the severity of their condition and the guidelines of the Initiative. Later, we brought together global experts in the field to perform the surgeries. We also made arrangements to ease transportation challenges. Everything was done within three months, which we consider a great feat.”

The Golden Heart Initiative turned out to be a unique opportunity for these children to achieve their dreams of leading a fruitful life. Most of them were unable to undergo the surgery earlier due to several reasons such as high expense and lack of proper facilities.

On the impact of the programme, Dr. Shamsheer said, “It fills our hearts to see these children taking baby steps into their healthier lives through the Golden Heart Initiative. When we launched the Initiative, it received a good response from all quarters. Executing this mission was not an easy task. With utmost devotion, our doctors and other staff worked towards the healing of these little ones. The Initiative would not have succeeded without their hard work and the families that trusted us. We hope this tribute to Mr. Yusuffali will inspire these little ones to dream big.”

AI is boosting access to healthcare: MBZUAI

Malaria is one of the oldest and deadliest diseases, and its impact is being exacerbated by warming temperatures caused by climate change…reports Asian Lite News

Artificial intelligence (AI) could play a key role in extending health services to underserved and vulnerable communities, by revolutionizing prevention and diagnosis, and helping develop bespoke medicines while expanding access to care.

With the costs of healthcare coverage continuing to rise and environmental issues such as climate change and air pollution exacerbating community health issues, millions of people around the world don’t have access to the medical services and support they need. To raise awareness of these challenges – the theme for World Health Day (April 7) this year is ‘My health, my right’ – and Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) is engaged in key research areas it hopes will provide real world solutions.

1) Tackling Malaria

Malaria is one of the oldest and deadliest diseases, and its impact is being exacerbated by warming temperatures caused by climate change. Supported by the Reaching the Last Mile initiative, a team of scientists at MBZUAI is developing AI-powered applications to help physicians and public health officials in Indonesia reduce the impact of malaria on the country’s population of 270 million. The applications being developed perform sensory data fusion, a process that combines data from a variety of sensors to generate a virtual representation of the environment in the form of a ‘digital twin.’ This approach provides precise weather forecasting and generates a near real-time representation of the environment, providing officials with detailed information about where malaria outbreaks may occur, and helping authorities to prevent the spread of the disease.

2) Predictive healthcare

AI-enabled predictive healthcare anticipates medical issues before they arise, enabling proactive interventions and personalized treatment. By analyzing vast datasets and identifying patterns, it enhances preventive care, reduces hospitalizations, and ultimately saves lives. A research team at MBZUAI is using machine learning and computer vision to identify cardiovascular disease from CT scans. The team is collaborating with the University of Oxford on a comprehensive study to identify biomarkers indicating potential heart problems before symptoms show. This AI system aims to assist clinicians by swiftly analyzing scans and highlighting areas that need attention. When integrated with portable ultrasound scanning devices, this service has the potential to provide millions of people with initial cardiovascular assessments worldwide.

3) Remote patient monitoring

AI in remote patient monitoring utilizes sensors and algorithms to track vital signs and health metrics from a distance, offering real-time insights into patient well-being. This technology enables proactive interventions, reduces hospital re-admissions, and enhances overall healthcare efficiency, particularly for patients with chronic conditions or those in remote areas. These tools can be applied to monitor the health and safety of older people and provide them support to remain in their homes. Remote patient monitoring and assistance systems could integrate several types of smart wearable devices to monitor pulse and temperature, position, and location.

4) Accelerating drug development

Currently, around 90% of clinical trials for new medications end in failure, which is why Quris-AI, the world’s first Bio-AI clinical-prediction platform ensuring the safety and efficacy of new drugs, and MBZUAI, signed an agreement in 2023 to develop a world-class Bio-AI center of excellence in Abu Dhabi. The center will accelerate the development of safer, and more highly personalized medications tailored specifically to the diverse populations of the MENA region. MBZUAI is providing expertise in the development of predictive AI models, while incentivizing sought-after AI graduates to stay in the UAE as they begin their careers.

5) Personalized treatments

AI is revolutionising personalised medical treatments by analyzing vast patient data to tailor interventions while accelerating the discovery and creation of new drugs. From genomic profiling for precise cancer therapies to predicting drug responses based on individual characteristics, AI optimizes treatment plans for each patient’s unique biology. By harnessing AI’s analytical power, healthcare providers can deliver targeted therapies that address patients’ specific needs. MBZUAI is working on numerous areas aimed at making treatments more personalised and effective, through genome mapping and partnerships to bring the power of AI to drug discovery and development. Last year, MBZUAI signed a partnership with BioMap, an AI model-powered life science platform, focusing on creating breakthroughs in AI generated proteins (AIGP) to provide more tailored treatments in the Middle East.

Plea calls on govt to reconsider healthcare visa term

The petition, launched on the U.K. Parliament website over the weekend, is intended to shed light on a pressing issue and after 10,000 signatures will require a response from the government…reports Asian Lite News

An online petition which urges the UK government to allow foreign healthcare workers, a large chunk of them from India, more time to find a job after their sponsors fail them has attracted hundreds of signatures within days.

Under tougher rules that came into effect earlier this month, care providers in England acting as sponsors for migrants are required to register with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) – the industry regulator for Health and Social Care, a move the government said will tackle abuse within the sector.

However, the consequence of this crackdown is that many workers from countries such as India find themselves abandoned when a previously legitimate sponsor loses their licence, with only 60 days to find alternative employment in the sector.

“Sixty days is a very short notice for a family to arrange departure as it could unsettle their children’s schooling, lead to loss of rent or deposit, furnishing costs, air ticket and relocation costs,” reads the petition launched by UK-based Indian-origin professional Balakrishnan Balagopal.

“Several healthcare workers who arrived in the U.K. are left without jobs as their sponsors are unable to provide them with one or there wasn’t a job available for them when they arrived. Some firms lose their licence to sponsor due to their own mistakes…The request is to extend jobless health workers’ stay in the U.K. for one more year for them to secure another job,” it adds.

The petition, launched on the U.K. Parliament website over the weekend, is intended to shed light on a pressing issue and after 10,000 signatures will require a response from the government.

According to Balagopal, hundreds of healthcare workers who arrived in the U.K. to meet shortages in the social care sector since 2022 are stuck in a situation not of their own making. Many firms who had promised them jobs lost their licence to sponsor due to errors beyond the workers’ control and others found that the promised job never materialised.

Earlier this month, the UK Home Office said it has evidence that care workers have been offered visas under false pretences, travelling thousands of miles for jobs that don’t exist or to be paid far below the minimum wage required for their work and exploiting them. It sought to crack down on the abuse of the system, including a ban on international care workers bringing their dependent family members when migrating to the UK.

“Care workers make an incredible contribution to our society, taking care of our loved ones in times of need. But we cannot justify inaction in the face of clear abuse, manipulation of our immigration system and unsustainable migration numbers. It is neither right nor fair to allow this unacceptable situation to continue,” said Home Secretary James Cleverly.

With the letters starting to go out to those affected in recent weeks, the fallout of the crackdown is expected to hundreds already in the country and left in the lurch due to no fault of their own. “Sending these workers back to their home countries and having care homes struggle to find adequate staffing may lead to severe healthcare implications for the UK population. By addressing these concerns, we can ensure that the healthcare system remains robust and capable of meeting the needs of those it serves,” said Balagopal, who hopes his petition can help draw attention to this injustice.

His campaign intends to lobby the authorities to adopt a more compassionate stance that addresses the pressing social care needs of British society and the wellbeing of foreign workers simultaneously.

According to official statistics from the past year, an estimated 1,40,000 visas were issued to overseas workers to come to the UK to meet staff shortages in the UK,’s health and care industry and 39,000 of these went to Indians.

Abu Dhabi’s Seventy Second Investment Cleared for Healthcare Deal in India

In recent months, Abu Dhabi has been actively investing in the healthcare sector…reports Asian Lite News

The Abu Dhabi-registered Seventy Second Investment Company, a wholly owned unit of the state-backed Mubadala’s Mamoura Diversified Global Holding, has received clearance from India’s fair-trade regulator, the Competition Commission of India (CCI), for a stake in one of the country’s biggest healthcare facilities, Manipal Health Enterprises.

According to the CCI filing this week, the deal has been approved under the green channel route, which allows for immediate approval at filing, news agency Press Trust of India reported.

Manipal Health Enterprises, which is commonly known as Manipal Hospitals, is a part of the Manipal Education and Medical Group (MEMG), which operates 33 hospitals across 17 cities in India. According to the company website, they are touted as the second-largest hospital chain in the country.

In recent months, Abu Dhabi has been actively investing in the healthcare sector. In November, the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) and Malaysia’s Employees Provident Fund backed the $1.2 billion takeover of southeast Asian hospital operator Ramsay Sime Darby Healthcare by private equity firm TPG and Hong Leong Group.

The acquisition was the biggest conducted by ADIA in the healthcare, life sciences and pharma sectors since it participated in the $1.6 billion takeover and recapitalisation of US-based veterinary company Amerivet in March 2022, according to industry specialist, Global SWF.

The other big transaction by ADIA last year was its purchase of a 3% stake in India-based Intas Pharmaceuticals for $250 million from Singapore’s Temasek.

The funding will improve preparedness and response systems for future disease outbreaks as well as health and nutrition emergencies, according to a statement issued by the EU office in Kabul on Thursday,

The long-lasting cooperation between the EU and WHO has contributed to stronger and more resilient health care in Afghanistan, it said.

The increased financing is intended to improve health care in all 34 provinces, benefiting almost 2 million people. The additional funding expands on the previous EU-WHO collaboration in response to the COVID-19 pandemic by integrating and improving diagnostic and infectious disease management and response in Afghanistan, the EU stated, according to Pajhwok News.

Tentative Deal Reached After Largest US Healthcare Strike

More than 75,000 workers with the California-based healthcare provider went on strike for three days last week, demanding better pay and benefits.

Kaiser Permanente, the largest healthcare nonprofit organization in the US, has reached a tentative deal with the unions representing over 75,000 employees, after the largest healthcare workers’ strike on record in the country.

“The frontline healthcare workers of the Coalition of Kaiser Permanente Unions are excited to have reached a tentative agreement with Kaiser Permanente,” union officials said on X on Friday.

Kaiser Permanente also posted a similar announcement on the platform.

Both sides expressed their gratitude to the instrumental involvement of Acting US Labor Secretary Julie Su.

More than 75,000 workers with the California-based healthcare provider went on strike for three days last week, demanding better pay and benefits.

Union officials had warned that the three-day strike “will be the initial demonstration of our strength to Kaiser” and “another longer and stronger” strike would be staged next month if a new contract agreement couldn’t be reached by then.

Kaiser admitted staff shortages in a statement, saying it’s a problem that every healthcare provider in the nation has been facing.

The organisation’s data confirm a chronic trend of staff shortages in the US healthcare industry, which was exacerbated by the pandemic.

This year saw a record of labor activities in the US, as the number of workers involved in strikes has reached at least 411,000, the highest since 2019, recent data showed.

This year’s strikes also lasted longer than those in recent history, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and Cornell University’s Labor Action Tracker.

Workers have walked out from various industries such as healthcare, entertainment, automobile, hotel and airlines.

Negotiations between Hollywood studios and the US entertainment industry’s largest union representing 160,000 actors and performers were suspended on Wednesday night after the two sides failed to reach a deal.

Hollywood has shuddered to standstill since the start of the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strike in mid-July.

In another high-profile strike, more than 34,000 auto workers from the “Big Three” automakers — Ford, General Motors and Stellantis — are on strike, which has lasted nearly one month.
