Israel denies IDF buried Palestinians in mass grave

Palestinian civil defence teams in Gaza reported that a mass grave with 283 bodies was located near the Nasser Hospital in the southern city of Khan Younis….reports Asian Lite News

The bodies discovered in a mass grave in the Gaza Strip were not buried by Israeli soldiers but by Palestinians, according to Israel’s embassy in Geneva.

“The claim that the (Israel Defense Forces) buried Palestinian bodies is baseless and unfounded,” said an embassy statement released on Tuesday evening.

Soldiers only examined the bodies in the grave in search of Israeli hostages, the dignity of the deceased was respected, and the bodies of Palestinians were returned to the same place, it added.

“The examination was conducted in a careful manner and exclusively in places where intelligence indicated the possible presence of hostages,” the embassy said.

Palestinian civil defence teams in Gaza reported on Monday that a mass grave with 283 bodies was located near the Nasser Hospital in the southern city of Khan Younis.

According to the office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk, which cited the civil defence, some bodies had bound hands.

Turk on Tuesday said he was “horrified” at the reported discovery of mass graves near hospitals in Gaza and called for an independent investigation into the causes of the deaths.

There have also been reports in recent weeks of bodies found at the Al-Shifa medical complex in Gaza City.

Under international humanitarian law, hospitals are entitled to special protection.

In his remarks, Turk noted that “the intentional killing of civilians, detainees, and others who are hors de combat (out of action due to injury) is a war crime”.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights also criticised the recent attacks by Israeli forces in Rafah in the Gaza Strip due to the high death toll among women and children.

“The latest images of a premature child taken from the womb of her dying mother, of the adjacent two houses where 15 children and five women were killed — this is beyond warfare,” said Turk, warning of possible war crimes.

The pregnant woman was fatally injured in an Israeli attack on a residential building a few days ago, according to a UNHCR spokeswoman.

Rescue workers had taken her to a hospital where the baby had survived after a caesarean section on its dying mother and was now fighting for its life.

The UN office documented three military strikes in Rafah since April 19, in which at least 30 women and children were killed.

The UNHCR now estimates that there are still 1.2 million displaced persons in Rafah. This is down from the earlier estimate of 1.7 million due to many people leaving Rafah for fear of the offensive to the north announced by Israel.

Such an offensive could lead to further violations of international law, as well as war crimes and crimes against humanity, UNHCR said.

According to Palestinian authorities, more than 34,000 people died since Israel launched a military operation in retaliation for the massive terrorist attack in the south of the country on October 7 that killed nearly 1,200 people.

Turk also demanded the immediate release of the remaining hostages taken from Israel during last year’s attack.

Meanwhile, southern Israeli border areas came under renewed rocket fire from Gaza early Tuesday.

Four rockets were intercepted by Israel’s missile defence system, local media said, with one warehouse in the border town of Sderot being hit by fragments and setting on fire. There were no reports of casualties.

According to Israeli figures, more than 16,000 rockets have been fired at Israel by the Palestinian militant organisation Hamas and other groups since October 7.

Red Cross says Rafah evacuations ‘impossible’

The situation in Gaza remains tense and precarious as concerns grow over a potential Israeli assault on the city of Rafah. Amid these fears, plans to evacuate Palestinians from Rafah, “would be impossible,” according to Red Cross, media reported.

Fabrizio Carboni, a Red Cross official, expressed doubts about the feasibility of such evacuations given the lack of suitable shelter and essential services elsewhere, AFP reported.

Israeli media reports suggested preparations for a military operation in Rafah, which Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has long advocated. However, concerns have been raised about the humanitarian consequences of such an operation, particularly given Gaza’s already dire conditions.

The prospect of civilian evacuations prompted discussions about potential international assistance, including the possibility of setting up tent cities with international support. Yet, aid workers remain uncertain about how to mitigate the impending crisis, with little information provided by Israeli authorities or international donors.

Jan Egeland, head of the Norwegian Refugee Council, described the situation as a countdown to catastrophe, emphasizing the urgent need for humanitarian action, AFP reported.

US plans sanctions on more IDF units

The US has decided to sanction the Netzah Yehuda battalion for alleged repeated incidents of human rights violations against Palestinians in the West Bank…reports Asian Lite News

Despite strong protests from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the proposed sanctions on an Israel Defense Forces’ wing, the US is mulling more action against some other IDF units.

Sources in the Israeli government told that they had received information that the US was mulling sanctions on more Israeli military units for alleged human rights violations.

The US, according to sources, will announce sanctions against the Netzah Yehuda unit of the IDF this week. The Netzah Yehuda unit is comprised of largely ultra-Orthodox nationalists out of the West Bank.

The US State Department has, according to sources, probed Netzah Yehuda and several other units in the Israeli security forces for well over a year over alleged human rights violations.

The US has decided to sanction the Netzah Yehuda battalion for alleged repeated incidents of human rights violations against Palestinians in the West Bank.

Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu in a statement on Saturday night said, “The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) must not be sanctioned.”

The Israeli Prime Minister further said, “Our soldiers are fighting terrorist monsters, and the intention to impose sanctions on an IDF unit is the height of absurdity and a moral nadir.”

He added, “The government of Israel that I lead will act with all means against these moves.”

The far-right ministers in the Israeli government — Itamar Ben Gvir, who is the National Security Minister, and Bezalel Smotrich — denounced the reported US move to blacklist the IDF battalion.

Ben Gvir in a statement said, “Imposing sanctions on our soldiers is a red line.”

The minister further said that the reported move of the US was extremely serious and added, “The members of the Netzah Yehuda must be protected.”

He also called upon the Israeli Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, not to submit before the US dictates.

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich in a statement on the social media platform, X, came out strongly against the imposition of sanctions on Netzah Yehuda and said, “The move to sanction IDF battalion, while Israel is fighting for its existence is complete madness.”

“This is part of a planned move to force the State of Israel to agree to the establishment of a Palestinian state and to forsake Israel’s security,” he said.

IDF Accuses Deceased Journalists of Ties to Terrorism

The statement said that the military intelligence confirmed that that two were actively involved in attacks against IDF forces….reports Asian Lite News

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said that two men identified as Al Jazeera journalists who were killed in a strike in southern Gaza’s Rafah area, were members of terrorist organisations in the Hamas-controlled enclave.

In a post on X late Wednesday night, the IDF said: “Confirmed: journalists Hamza al-Dahdouh and Mustafa Thuria were members of Gaza-based terrorist organizations. On Jan 7, an IAF aircraft directed by troops targeted the operators of a drone, posing a threat to our soldiers near Rafah. The operators were later identified as al-Dahdouh and Thuria.

“Documents found by our troops in Gaza revealed Thuria’s role as Squad Deputy Commander in Hamas’ Gaza City Brigade, as well as Al-Dahdouh’s roles in the Islamic Jihad terrorist organization’s electronic engineering unit and previously as a deputy commander in IJ’s Zeitun Battalion.”

The post also contained an image of a document supposedly of the Al-Quds Brigades, written in Arabic, where two supposed names were underlined in red.

Al-Quds Brigades is the armed wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) terrorist group.

Dahdouh was the son of Al Jazeera Gaza correspondent Wael Dahdouh and Thuria was a video stringer for AFP who had also worked for Al Jazeera.

In a statement, the Israeli army said that it spotted a terror operative piloting a drone that would have injured IDF soldiers.

In response, the army attacked and hit a car they were in.

The statement said that the military intelligence confirmed that that two were actively involved in attacks against IDF forces.

Following the killings, there were massive protests in Gaza.

International non-profit, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) condemned the deaths and said that it received assurances from the a prosecutor’s office at the International Criminal Court (ICC) that it will probe crimes and atrocities against journalists in Gaza amid the raging Israel-Hamas war.

According to Paris-based media rights group, at least 79 media workers have been killed in the past three months in the Hamas-controlled enclave.

Israeli Forces Near Capture of Hamas Leader Sinwar Linked to October Assault

He said that Sinwar is hiding in the nearby areas and the IDF is very close in capturing the Hamas leaders…reports Asian Lite News

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on Wednesday said that they are very close in capturing the Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar believed to be the man behind October 7 attacks.

The IDF Spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hageri said that they had reached near the tunnels where the Hamas leader Sinwar was hiding.

“IDF had specific information about the tunnel where Sinwar was hiding. However, he fled the tunnel only a few hours before the IDF conducted the raid,” he said.

He said that Sinwar is hiding in the nearby areas and the IDF is very close in capturing the Hamas leaders.

He said that the IDF has increased its presence in the Khan Younis area and an additional brigade has been pressed into action.

Sinwar is believed to be the brain behind the Hamas attack of October 7 which led to killing of 1200 and kidnapping of over 200 Israelis.

Israel launched a ground offensive inside Gaza on October 27 after Hamas attacked Israel in a surprise attack on October 7 in which 1200 Israelis were killed and over 200 were taken hostage.

Since the outbreak of hostilities between Hamas and Israel, over 19,667 Palestinians have been killed, mostly being children and women.

IDF Urges Civilians to Move Towards Rafah Border

The IDF said that it has made substantial progress in the war with the army entering the strong holds of Hamas and have captured the Northern Gaza strip…reports Asian Lite News

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on Sunday said that three more IDF soldiers were killed by Hamas in Gaza taking the total number of soldiers killed to 61.

The IDF identified the three killed soldiers as Sgt. Maj (Res) Rani Tahan, operations Sergeant of the 261st Reserve Brigade’s 8717th battalion, Master Segt (res) of the 261st Reserve Brigade’s 8717th battalion, and Maj (res) Chen Yahalom who was with the Artillery Corps 8159th battalion.

The IDF said that it has made substantial progress in the war with the army entering the strong holds of Hamas and have captured the Northern Gaza strip.

It warned the civilians in Khan Younis area of Southern Gaza to leave towards the Rafah border as the Israel Security Agency (ISA) has claimed the presence of Hamas in the Khan Younis area of South Gaza.

The IDF said that the reduction in the number of missiles fired towards Israel from Gaza is an indication of the waning strength of Hamas.

Israel commenced ground invasion in Gaza on October 27 after Hamas carried out attack in Southern Israel on October 7.

IDF Targets Alleged Hamas Infrastructure in Hospital Operation

Hamas has repeatedly denied Israeli claims that it operates from within the hospital…reports Asian Lite News

A top Israeli official said he was sure that “more and more material” will be shared from the military’s search operation at Gaza’s Al-Shifa Hospital, where the Jewish nation believes that the Hamas militant group operates a subterranean network of tunnels.

Justifying the military operation at the enclave’s largest hospital, Mark Regev, a senior adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, told the BBC on Wednesday night that “international law specifically says that the minute your enemy uses a humanitarian site like a hospital for its military machine then you can target that site”.

“It doesn’t mean you do so lightly or irresponsibly but under international law it loses its immunity,” he added.

Regev’s remarks came as Israeli special forces backed by additional troops conducted the “precise and targeted operation” inside the hospital against Hamas terror infrastructure at the site.

The operation lasted until Wednesday evening, with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) finding weapons and Hamas assets inside the premises, while it also interrogated people.

At least five Hamas gunmen were killed by troops during a gun battle outside the hospital, The Times of Israel reported, adding that no soldiers were injured.

Addressing the media, IDF spokeperson Daniel Hagari said on Wednesday night that the operation lasted some 18 hours.

He said that the IDF searched the hospital premises extensively and did not rule out the possibility of getting Hamas terroists who are hiding in some areas in the facility.

The Israeli military has repeatedly alleged that Palestinian armed groups operate a military compound within and underneath the Shifa Hospital.

The hospital’s management and the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza have strongly denied these allegations and have called for an independent investigation.

Presently, it remains unclear what or who remains in the complex following the Israli operation.

Meanwhile, the Israeli army stressed that the military was “not overrunning” the hospital, asserting troops were conducting a “focused” operation “in a defined area” of the hospital.

Though Israel believes some of the 240 hostages captured by Gaza terrorists were housed at the hospital at one time, there is no indication of hostages currently being held there.

However, the IDF believes the operation may bring intelligence information on the captives.

Responding to the operation, senior Hamas member Bassem Naim called it “ridiculous and worthless” and said he could not rule out that the Israeli military “brought weapons and put them in the Al-Shifa complex”, the BBC reported.

He said Israel’s goal is to “pressure” hospitals and medical centres and to displace Gaza’s population, adding that 25 hospitals in the territory are now out of service through “bombing, siege and destruction”.

The Health Ministry in Gaza said that before the military raid in Al-Shifa, bombardments hit the hospital and damaged parts of it, including the specialised surgeries department, coronary care division and a warehouse.

“After the troops entered, patients, staff and IDPs were reporteldy relocated within the compound,” it said.

The Ministry also claimed that on Wednesday, 179 bodies held at Al Shifa, which could not be evacuated or properly maintained, were buried in a mass grave inside the compound.

Israel Allows First Fuel Shipment to Gaza

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has allowed the first fuel truck carrying over 20,000 litres of diesel to enter Gaza Strip from Egypt since the breakout of the war amid outcry from international aid organisations that underlined the people’s sufferings due to acute fuel shortage.

Sources with United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNWRA) told IANS that the fuel is only for the use of the UN and not for hospital purposes. The UNRWA director in Gaza, Thomas White posted on ‘X’ that it received fuel.

The shortage of fuel has led to the malfunctioning of hospitals, water treatment plants, sewage removal and even communications, according to the UNRWA.

The UNRWA has been actively involved in the humanitarian aid work in Gaza.

The UN had warned that it would have to halt humanitarian operations in Gaza since it was running out of fuel.

Tamara Al Rifai, Executive Director, Communications of UNRWA told IANS that Gaza Strip requires a minimum of 500 trucks per day of provisions, aid materials, fuel and other essential commodities for the minimum functioning of life, saying Gaza was receiving only around 30 trucks per day, which was highly inadequate.

Sources in the UN aid agency told IANS that two more trucks carrying fuel were lined up outside the Rafah crossing but it was not clear as to when these trucks would be allowed into Gaza Strip.

It may be noted that the trucks that cross the Rafah border will have to pass through strict scrutiny of IDF soldiers, which will lead to a lot of time consumption in delivery of aid materials to UN relief centres and warehouses.

The IDF said that 8,00,000 people have already moved southward.

Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that the IDF is tightening the noose over Hamas and that the Army has destroyed several Hamas centres and rocket launching pads.

He added that IDF destroyed several Hamas tunnels and eliminated many terrorists within these spiralling tunnels.

Netanyahu while visiting the Tzelem base told the Israeli soldiers that they were saving the nation.

The Prime Minister also warned the Hezbollah that if they attack Israel, the response would be much more than what was expected.

Since the latest round of Hamas-Israel war broke out a month ago, 89 UN aid workers have been killed, which is the highest number of UN employees killed in a conflict in the history of the global organisation, the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) said.

In its latest situation report, the UNRWA also added on Tuesday that nearly 1.5 million people have been displaced across the Gaza Strip since October 7, nearly 725,000 are sheltering in 149 UNRWA installations across all five governorates of Gaza, including in the north.

In the last 24 hours, one UNRWA school in the north of Gaza was directly hit by strikes, resulting in one person killed and nine injured among the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) sheltering in the school, it said.

According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, overcrowding in UN facilities in Gaza now remains a major concern, Xinhua news agency reported.

In the Khan Younis Training Centre, where 22,000 displaced people sought shelter, the space per person is less than two square metre, and there is one toilet for every 600 people.

Hamas has 180 hostages

The Military Intelligence of Israel and the Israeli Security Agency (ISA) have roughly estimated that the Hamas was holding 180 hostages kidnapped on October 7.

The estimate states that 40 of the hostages were under the custody of Palestinian Islamic Jihad and 20 hostages were with other Islamic groups.

The intelligence agencies of Israel have given this estimate to the war cabinet of Israel and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

According to information available, the Isarelis have passed on this information to the US, who are using interlocutors in Qatar for resolving the crisis.

Meanwhile, White House has confirmed that the US President Joe Biden have communicated to Israel for a ceasefire for three days in Gaza Strip to prevail upon the mediators to bring back the Israel hostages.

The US is mediating for the release of 15 hostages as a first round of diplomacy through the offices of Qatar.

However, interlocutor’s have, according to sources, involved in the talks skeptical about the Hamas political leadership being able to convince the military leadership for the release of hostages.

Most of the political leadership of Hamas, including Ismail Haniyeh, are abroad while the military leadership, including Yahya Sinwar are in Gaza Strip fighting the Israeli forces.

Fake Social Profiles Uncovered in IDF Investigation

Hamas members who overran army bases had maps of the officers’ quarters in an apparent attempt to capture senior officers…reports Asian Lite News

Among the items discovered on the dead bodies of IDF soldiers killed on October 7 by Hamas were the maps and addresses of senior IDF officers who live in border communities, media reports said.

In one of the incidents, the Hamas gunmen arrived at the home of an officer however forces there managed to repel them, Times of Israel reported.

Hamas members who overran army bases had maps of the officers’ quarters in an apparent attempt to capture senior officers, the report said.

At least 1,400 people were killed during the attacks on communities and bases in southern Israel, most of them civilians, and more than 240 were taken hostage to Gaza, Times of Israel reported.

The IDF said that it has foiled a network of fake social media profiles that attempted to extract information from soldiers on behalf of the Hamas amid the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip, media reported.

The IDF said that the profiles were operated by ‘Axis of Resistance’ countries — an informal coalition against Israel and Western nations — led by Iran, Times of Israel reported.

The IDF said that the operatives used photos of real women in a practice known as “catfishing,” and managed a kind of romantic relationship through correspondence, voice recordings and video calls, in an attempt to obtain information for Hamas.

The IDF said that the faux social media profiles had additional fake profiles posing as their parents, siblings and friends, in order to strengthen their credibility, Times of Israel reported.

It said that the network consisted of dozens of fake profiles on social networks, mostly on Instagram, and the number of potential victims was between hundreds and thousands of soldiers, including reservists.

IDF said that the Israeli authorities are working with social media sites to ban the accounts, the report said.

IDF completing preparations for ‘attack from air, sea, land’

Hanegbi says that in a recent cabinet meeting, the government approved a plan to “destroy” Hamas, as stated by the prime minister and defense minister…reports Asian Lite News

As the Israel-Palestine conflict enters its eighth day, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has said it is completing preparations for a “significant ground operation” in the Gaza Strip, The Times of Israel reported.

The IDF statement says it is readying to “expand the offensive” by implementing a “wide range of offensive operational plans” which it says include a “joint and coordinated attack from the air, sea and land.”

The IDF said it is finalizing the draft of hundreds of thousands of reservists, as the logistics directorate is working to provide troops with all the equipment they will need for the ground offensive.

It said: “In recent days, the tools required for combat have been transferred to the assembly areas, and at this stage, the various units of the Technological and Logistics Directorate are working to complete the qualification of the tools and equipping them with advanced combat means, as needed.”

“IDF battalions and soldiers are deployed all over the country and are prepared to increase readiness for the next stages of the war, with an emphasis on a significant ground operation,” the military added, according to The Times of Israel.

The military is expected to launch a ground invasion in the Gaza Strip, but its extent and when it is carried out may be affected by operational considerations, as tensions grow on the northern border.

Meanwhile, Israel’s National Security Council head Tzachi Hanegbi has reaffirmed that the cabinet’s war goal is to remove Hamas from military and political control over the Gaza Strip.

Hanegbi, however, declined to elaborate on planned next steps for the coastal enclave.

When asked about Israeli plans for alternative control, or return to occupation, of the Gaza Strip, Hanegbi told The Times of Israel, “We can’t report through you to the enemy on what is coming, we can tell Hamas that it is prohibited for it to be sovereign in Gaza.”

Hanegbi says that in a recent cabinet meeting, the government approved a plan to “destroy” Hamas, as stated by the prime minister and defense minister.

“Hamas will not be the ruler, the sovereign in Gaza after the combat,” he says, as per The Times of Israel. Earlier on Saturday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel is ready with its fighters in the Gaza Strip at the front line.

“With our fighters in the Gaza Strip, on the front line. We are all ready,” Netanyahu wrote on ‘X’ on Saturday. Netanyahu toured Kibbutz Be’eri and Kibbutz Kfar Azza, two of the worst-hit Gaza border communities in last week’s Hamas onslaught, his office announced, The Times of Israel reported.

As per a statement, Netanyahu “walked between the ruins of the houses where these terrible massacres took place.” The prime minister was briefed by the IDF officers there, including the head of the paratrooper battalion.

The visit comes as Netanyahu’s first visit to the scene, more than a week after the attack that saw more than 1,300 Israelis killed, most of them civilians, as waves of Hamas terrorists breached the border. Meanwhile, the Israeli Air Force (IAF) has said that upon receiving the report of wounded following the infiltration of terrorists in Zikim, the soldiers of Unit 669 were rushed to the field.

“The forces worked to rescue the wounded under fire and mortar fire. Since the beginning of the fighting, Unit 669 rescued about 200 wounded in about 45 rescues,” the IAF wrote on ‘X’.

In the wake of Israel Hamas war in the Gaza Strip which claimed the loss of thousands of lives on both sides including civilians, an agreement has been reached under which Israel will allow foreigners to leave the war-torn Gaza, Times of Israel reported on Saturday.

Egypt, Israel and the United States have agreed to allow foreigners residing in Gaza to pass through the Rafah border crossing into Egypt, under which Israel agreed to refrain from striking areas the foreigners would pass through on their way out of the Palestinian territory.

The Israeli publication added that Qatar was involved in the negotiations and the participants received approval from the Palestinian terror groups, Hamas and Islamic Jihad.
