Indonesia to grant visa-free access to Taiwanese citizens

Sandiaga disclosed the information during a meeting with foreign journalists, where he also outlined Indonesia’s “golden visa” and “second home visa” programmes….reports Asian Lite News

Indonesia has submitted a proposal to grant visa-free access to Taiwanese citizens, according to Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno.

The proposal is now with the Directorate-General of Immigration for approval, as the country seeks to expand its tourism reach and attract more international visitors, Taipei Times (CNA) reported.

Sandiaga disclosed the information during a meeting with foreign journalists, where he also outlined Indonesia’s “golden visa” and “second home visa” programmes. These initiatives are designed to boost tourism and encourage foreign investment in the country. The Minister emphasised the importance of these programmes in increasing the nation’s global tourism standing.

The announcement comes just days before Sandiaga is set to leave his post ahead of Prabowo Subianto’s inauguration as Indonesia’s next president. During the transition to the new government, Sandiaga highlighted key investment opportunities within Indonesia’s special tourism economic zones, encouraging foreign companies to explore ventures in various cities.

Despite Taiwan being considered for visa-free access, it was notably absent from Indonesia’s most recent list of 13 countries and regions granted such privileges. “It is unsatisfactory that the Indonesian government only approved visa-free entry for 13 regions and countries,” Sandiaga said.

He pointed out that neighbouring countries like Malaysia and Thailand have already extended visa exemptions to a broader range of nations, reported Taipei Times.

The Directorate-General of Immigration reviews its visa-free country list every three months, Sandiaga noted, and the agency will soon operate as a non-ministerial department under the new government.

The Minister expressed optimism that the visa-free programme will soon extend to Taiwan, China, and other key markets such as Australia, India, the US, and several European nations.

Visa exemption is a crucial policy to elevate Indonesia’s tourism sector, Sandiaga said, citing the country’s ranking of 22nd in the World Economic Forum’s 2023 Travel and Tourism Development Index. “The visa programmes are crucial for Indonesia to make it to the top 10 in the index,” he added.

Additionally, Sandiaga announced that Indonesia would participate in a major international travel fair in Taiwan next year. Starting from the Lunar New Year, two charter flights per week will operate between Taipei and Banyuwangi, Taipei Times reported.

“As the Ijen volcano complex and Mount Bromo have become very popular among Taiwanese and Chinese tourists, the direct flights from Taipei to Banyuwangi are expected to attract more tourists from Taiwan and China to Indonesia,” Sandiaga said. (ANI)

MBZ welcomes Indonesia’s Jokowi

During the Presidential visit, Indonesia and UAE are expected to strengthen their partnership, particularly in nuclear energy, investment, financial sectors, and other vital areas….reports Asian Lite News

Joko Widodo, President of the Republic of Indonesia, arrived in the United Arab Emirates yesterday at the start of a two-day state visit.

UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan led the welcoming reception for President Widodo and the accompanying delegation upon their arrival at the Presidential Airport in Abu Dhabi.

Also present to welcome the Indonesian President were H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Special Affairs; Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Tahnoun Al Nahyan, Advisor for Special Affairs at the Presidential Court; Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, Head of Honorary Mission accompanying the Indonesian President; and Abdulla Salem Al Dhaheri, UAE Ambassador to the Republic of Indonesia.

As the aircraft carrying President Widodo entered UAE airspace, it was met by several UAE Airforce jets in a gesture of respect for the distinguished guest. The squadron leader sought permission from His Excellency to accompany him to the Presidential Airport, warmly welcoming him to his second home, the United Arab Emirates.

Celebrating 47 years of ties

The state visit by President Joko Widodo of Indonesia to the UAE marks a significant milestone in enhancing the comprehensive relations between the two countries, crowning a 47-year journey of cooperation and friendship between Abu Dhabi and Jakarta.

During the visit, both countries are expected to strengthen their partnership, particularly in nuclear energy, investment, financial sectors, and other vital areas.

Historically, the visit of the Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, to Indonesia in May 1990 was a pivotal moment in the relations between the two countries.

H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, emphasised during his chairing of the UAE-Indonesia Joint Committee in Abu Dhabi in 2023 that the two countries – over the past 47 years – have enhanced cooperation and coordination across various fields. Key areas include energy, renewable energy, tourism, aviation, agriculture, food security, infrastructure, transportation, health, artificial intelligence, education, and culture.

Sheikh Abdullah highlighted that Emirati-Indonesian ties have significantly grown within multilateral organisations and initiatives, including the partnership within the G20 under Indonesia’s presidency in 2022 and India’s in 2023, as well as cooperation to support the Pandemic Fund under the G20 initiative.

He also commended Indonesia’s support for the UAE’s joining the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as a sectoral dialogue partner and the continued cooperation to strengthen this partnership.

Economically, the UAE-Indonesia bilateral trade has exceeded AED100 billion over the past ten years. Non-oil trade between the two countries from 2014 to 2023 reached approximately AED101.91 billion, with consistent growth in recent years.

The ratification of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between the two countries has exceptionally boosted economic relations and bilateral trade, reflected in the trade value which exceeded AED16 billion, marking a 7.2 percent increase compared to 2022.

The UAE-Indonesia CEPA, signed in Abu Dhabi in July 2022, is projected to boost non-oil trade to more than US$10 billion within five years, from approximately $3 billion in 2021. This will be achieved by reducing or eliminating tariffs on various goods and services, creating new opportunities for exporters and businesses from both countries.

According to the Ministry of Economy, jewellery and precious metals top the trade list, followed by cars, gold, palm oil and derivatives, and mobile phones.

The Mohamed bin Zayed-Joko Widodo International Mangrove Research Centre, in collaboration with Indonesia, is a result of the UAE’s $10 million commitment to nurturing mangrove ecosystems, recognised as a critically important nature-based solution in combatting climate change and preserving coastal ecosystems.

The centre represents one of the UAE’s significant contributions to promoting climate and environmental sustainability worldwide and underscores the strength of the strategic partnership between the UAE and Indonesia in many vital areas.

Moreover, the UAE and Indonesia serve as true models of tolerance. Indonesia has achieved significant success in promoting tolerance and acceptance within its diverse society, comprising over 17,000 islands, with residents speaking more than 700 languages and encompassing multiple ethnicities. Tolerance is a key driver of development in this promising Asian country.

In turn, the UAE has globalised its social and religious heritage built on tolerance and coexistence, originating from its geographic framework, through initiatives and events that have become prominent global steps in this field.

Indonesia threatens to shut down X over adult content

Indonesia is prepared to shut down social media platform X if it does not comply with a regulation barring adult content, the country’s communications minister said on Friday.

Indonesia, the world’s biggest Muslim-majority country, has strict rules that ban the sharing online of content deemed obscene.

Minister Budi Arie Setiadi told Reuters he had sent a warning letter to X related to this matter.

“We will certainly shut its services down,” he said, pointing to Indonesia’s electronic information and transaction (ITE) law that can carry a six-year jail sentence if someone spreads pornographic content.

His comments in an interview come after the social media platform recently updated its policies to permit consensually produced adult content.

X, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, has not responded to Indonesia’s warning letter, Budi said, adding the government would send more letters before deciding on a potential closure.

X, formerly known as Twitter, did not immediately respond to a request by Reuters for comment.

Indonesians are big users of social media and X has 24.85 million users in the country, according to data gathering business Statista.

Indonesia, UAE collaborate to build mangrove research centre in Bali

Dr. Al Dahak said that the centre will complement global efforts to increase the spread of mangroves, through initiatives such as the Mangrove Alliance for Climate…reports Asian Lite News

The UAE has achieved a significant milestone in climate action with the groundbreaking of the Mohamed bin Zayed-Joko Widodo International Mangrove Research Centre on the island of Bali, in collaboration with the Republic of Indonesia.

This initiative, made possible with a $10m commitment from the UAE, will bolster international efforts in nurturing mangrove ecosystems, recognised as a critically important nature-based solution in combatting climate change and preserving coastal ecosystems.

This took place at an event in the Indonesian province of Bali in the presence of Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investments of the Republic of Indonesia, Minister responsible for the UAE-Indonesian relations; Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure and Special Envoy for His Highness the Minister of Foreign Affairs to Indonesia; Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment and other officials.

The MBZ–Joko Widodo IMRC stands as a pinnacle of the UAE’s commitment to fostering global environmental sustainability while safeguarding the planet against the impacts of climate change. Furthermore, the Centre underscores the depth of partnership between the UAE and Indonesia across various critical domains, with a primary focus on advancing sustainable development initiatives and harmonizing efforts to forge a climate-resilient future for both nations.

H.H. Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Development and Fallen Heroes’ Affairs and Chair of the International Humanitarian and Philanthropic Council, said: “The groundbreaking of the MBZ–Joko Widodo IMRC demonstrates the UAE’s dedication to working in partnership to address global sustainability challenges. The UAE’s commitment underscores the critical importance of protecting the environment, and through this dedicated space for innovation and international collaboration together we can ensure the preservation of these vital ecosystems for future generations.”

Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure and Special Envoy for His Highness the Minister of Foreign Affairs to Indonesia, stressed that the Mohamed bin Zayed-Joko Widodo Center is a major step in enhancing international cooperation in environmental research. The project reflects the UAE’s commitment to the protection of critical ecosystems, such as mangroves. It is in line with our climate mitigation efforts and will contribute to developing effective strategies to safeguard the environment.”

He added: “The Center will be an ideal platform for scientists and researchers to join forces and exchange knowledge to improve our ability to counter current and future environmental challenges. It supports the UAE’s directions, reflected in the outcomes of the 28th UN Climate Change Conference (COP28), to drive collective climate action and environmental sustainability. It reflects the UAE’s dedication to lead joint environmental initiatives to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).”

Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak affirmed that the UAE, guided by the leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, consistently demonstrates its commitment to assuming a significant role in powering a new generation of sustainable development and tangible nature-preserving climate solutions for all inhabitants on earth.

“The MBZ – Joko Widodo IMRC stands as one of the UAE’s paramount collaborations with Indonesia, aimed at advancing nature-based solutions to mitigate the impacts of climate change on both national and global scales. Mangroves, being natural carbon sinks, complement technological solutions aimed at curbing carbon emissions.”

Dr. Al Dahak added that the centre will bolster efforts to plant and preserve more mangrove forests worldwide, particularly in the UAE, which has pledged to grow 100 million mangroves by 2030, and Indonesia, which is home to the largest and most diverse mangrove ecosystems globally.

“As mangrove forests are being decreased globally, the UAE recognises that additional loss of these forests is exacerbating the effects of climate change such as increased flooding and storms, and threatening people living in coastal areas. The centre’s goals are to stop the loss of this ecological treasure, restore its prosperity worldwide, and contribute to creating a sustainable future for all”

Dr. Al Dahak said that the centre will complement global efforts to increase the spread of mangroves, through initiatives such as the Mangrove Alliance for Climate (MAC), launched by the UAE in collaboration with Indonesia and involving 41 countries from around the world, and the Mangrove Breakthrough, which represents a collaborative effort between the Mangrove Alliance for Climate and UN Climate Change High-level Champions.

The Mohamed bin Zayed-Joko Widodo International Mangrove Research Centre will be built on 2.5 hectares of land, with supporting infrastructure, including roads, electricity, and water, already in place, within the Ngurah Rai Forest Park in Bali. Already home to a wealth of biodiversity, the Ngurah Rai Forest Park covers 1,158.44 hectares of mangrove ecosystems around the Benoa Bay.

The Mohamed bin Zayed-Joko Widodo Centre aims to conduct further research to cultivate mangroves, enhancing their role as natural carbon sinks, their role in addressing climate change, improving coastal habitats and promoting biodiversity.

The centre will also foster an exchange of knowledge in developing mangroves with different countries to compensate for the global loss of this valuable species.

Mangrove forests are among the most productive and ecologically important ecosystems on earth. With the ability to store carbon more than 400 percent faster than land-based tropical rainforests, mangroves absorb emissions and protect the coastal environment. Furthermore, about 80 percent of global fish population depend on healthy mangrove ecosystems.

The establishment of a mangrove research centre was first announced at COP28, hosted by the UAE last year.
