India’s global role manifesting in the Middle East, says Israel envoy

Palestine’s envoy to India recently urged India to play a role of mediator in Israel-Palestine conflict…reports Asian Lite News

Amid clamour for India playing a role of peacemaker or mediator in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Israel’s Ambassador to India, Reuven Azar, has said that the significance of New Delhi’s global role is increasing and it is also starting to manifest in the Middle East.

In an interview with ANI, Reuven Azar said it is for India to decide what role it wants to play.

“This would be up to India to decide, increasing importance of global role of India is obvious and it is starting to manifest also in the Middle East. We can see (this) not only in great relations between PM Modi and PM Netanyahu but also the initiative we saw last year of the growing bonds between the India and the UAE and the way they have been concluding agreements that would allow India to connect better to the Gulf (region), it will also serve as a hub to connect East and West,” he said.

He was responding to query about whether Israel sees India playing any role to bring peace in Israel-Palestine conflict.

Palestine’s envoy to India recently urged India to play a role of mediator in Israel-Palestine conflict.

India shares good relations with Israel and Palestine and has been following an independent foreign policy.

Last year, at the G20 summit held in New Delhi, US President Joe Biden announced the formation of the India-Middle-East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), a connectivity project aimed at increasing economic and physical connectivity between India, the Middle East, Europe, and the US.

The proposed corridor is facing major challenges due to conflicts and political instability in West Asia.

The Israeli envoy expressed optimism that once the conflict is over, economic cooperation will become prominent and the connectivity corridor will flourish.

“At the end of the day, countries that are partner in the Abraham Accords are working under more or less the same basis – which is we want to create stability and prosperity, we want to fight extremism, we need to see to work with the partners of the world, especially the US, to stabilise the region to be able to do trade safely. This is challenged by Houthis in Yemen and by other proxies of Iran,” Reuven Azar said.

“We want to be in a situation where we can create an understanding how to defend this effort together so all the understanding we are having over the table…at the end of the day, create a set up that would allow us to flourish in future,” he added.

Reuven Azar also lauded India’s position on Hamas terror attack last October in Israel.

“We are grateful for the support India has given since October 7. India took clear stand condemning terrorist attack of October 7 and also defending the right of self-defence of Israel. We share the values of acting according to international law,” Azar told ANI.

Israel’s envoy also called for isolating at the international fora those states that support terrorism. He also spoke on cooperation with India on counter-terrorism

“We are cooperating in many ways, most of the ways we cooperate we are not announcing to terrorists, we have to be prudent about it, we have to be responsible about it but rest assured it is happening,” he said.

“The question is whether beyond security and intelligence cooperation we can create diplomatic effort to isolate terrorists…question is how many countries you are going to convince to join us in this effort to isolate both terrorist and perpetrators, those countries that are sponsoring terrorism, they should be isolated,” he added.

Reuven Azar presented his credentials to President Droupadi Murmu on September 6 along with envoys of four other countries. (ANI)

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has welcomed the declaration on ending division and strengthening unity signed by 14 Palestinian factions in Beijing, a spokesman said.

Guterres “very much welcomes the signing of the Beijing Declaration by the Palestinian factions,” said Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN chief, in response to questions at a regular daily briefing, Xinhua news agency reported.

Terming the deal as “an important step towards furthering Palestinian unity,” Dujarric said the secretary-general “encourages all factions to overcome their differences through dialogue and urges them to follow up on the commitments that were made in Beijing and the declaration they signed on to.”

“We’ve seen this before, we’ve talked about it before, and I think all steps towards unity are to be welcomed and encouraged,” he said.

“Palestinian unity, as we’ve said many a time, is crucial for peace and security and for advancing the aspirations of the Palestinian people for self-determination and for a fully independent, democratic, contiguous, viable and sovereign Palestinian State,” he added.

Guterres also expressed his appreciation for the diplomatic efforts being made by China as well as efforts of other countries involved in facilitating the process, said the spokesman.

At China’s invitation, senior representatives of 14 Palestinian factions held reconciliation talks in Beijing from July 21 to 23, and signed the Beijing Declaration on Ending Division and Strengthening Palestinian National Unity.

No Plans to Recognize Palestinian State: Germany

Scholz calls for a two-state solution with the Palestinian Authority governing both the West Bank and Gaza….reports Asian Lite News

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Friday that his government has no plans to officially recognise a Palestinian state.

There is “no reason” to recognise the Palestinian Authority (PA) as a separate state, Scholz said on Friday at a press conference alongside Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro.

“There is no clarity about the territory of the state, about all other issues related to it,” Scholz said. He suggested that matters were “not yet that far.”

Scholz argued that “a negotiated solution between Israel and the Palestinians that amounts to a two-state solution” with a Palestinian Authority responsible for both the West Bank and the Gaza Strip is needed instead.

“But we’re still a long way off that,” Scholz said.

What is important now is “to achieve a long-term ceasefire” and “for all parties to commit to the two-state solution,” Scholz said.

Ireland, Spain and Norway all announced plans to formally recognise a Palestinian state by the end of the month, a move that was met with fury from the right-wing government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Montenegro said that Portugal will not be taking this step for the time being, although he noted that his country had voted in favour of recognising Palestine as a full member of the United Nations General Assembly.

Scholz on Friday said that it has become clear in recent weeks that Arab countries are working hard to ensure security in the Middle East region, which the German chancellor contended should give hope for a possible two-state solution in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

However, a path of “symbolic recognition of statehood” would not lead things any further, Scholz said.

Qatar Wants Palestine as Full UN Member

Sheikha Alya stated that the State of Qatar confirms that the State of Palestine meets the required criteria and conditions under Article 4 of the United Nations Charter…reports Asian Lite News

Qatar has renewed its call for the UN Security Council to make a fair and appropriate decision by recommending full membership for the State of Palestine in the UN.

During the emergency special session of the General Assembly, Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, expressed Qatar’s pride in the adoption of the historic draft resolution by an overwhelming majority of the General Assembly, which supports Palestine’s right to full membership in the United Nations.

She expressed Qatar’s gratitude to the countries that voted in favor of the draft resolution, affirming that Qatar’s participation in adopting the draft resolution reflects its principled and longstanding position in support of the Palestinian people and their just cause.

Sheikha Alya stated that the State of Qatar confirms that the State of Palestine meets the required criteria and conditions under Article 4 of the United Nations Charter; therefore, this decision represents a significant victory for our Palestinian brothers and provides a new opportunity for the Security Council to take a unified stance to recommend the membership of the State of Palestine.

This decision embodies the purposes of the United Nations and international legitimacy resolutions, especially the principle of the right to self-determination, the principle of equal rights among peoples, and the principle of equality in sovereignty, Sheikha Alya said.

Accepting the State of Palestine as a full member state is a crucial step toward achieving the two-state solution, which is a key entry point to a just and comprehensive political settlement of the Palestinian issue in accordance with international legitimacy, she added.

Sheikha Alya explained that despite the importance of this achievement, the Israeli aggression continues in Gaza in clear defiance of international law, international humanitarian law, relevant Security Council and General Assembly resolutions, and the International Court of Justice.

Qatar also strongly condemned Israel’s bombing and attacks on Rafah.

Qatar has warned that forcing civilians to flee from the city, which has become the last refuge for hundreds of thousands of displaced people within Gaza, constitutes a serious violation of international laws and would exacerbate the worsening humanitarian crisis in the Strip.

The UN team has brought with them medicines, vaccines and fuel to help ensure that the medical facility remains functioning.

A UN team visited Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City and brought aid, the first time the world body has been able to deliver aid into besieged northern Gaza in over a week, said UN humanitarians.

A team from the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the World Health Organisation and the UN Children’s Fund visited Al-Shifa and brought with them medicines, vaccines and fuel to help ensure that the medical facility remains functioning, said OCHA.

The team also met with people who were among those injured on Thursday while seeking life-saving aid west of Gaza City, Xinhua news agency reported.

The hospital, the largest in the Gaza Strip, has reportedly admitted more than 700 people injured in that incident, about 200 of whom were still hospitalised on Friday, OCHA added.

By the time of the team’s visit on Friday morning, the hospital had also received the bodies of more than 70 people who had been killed in the incident. According to the Ministry of Health in Gaza, the overall death toll from Thursday’s incident has reached 112, said OCH.

Jaishankar calls for a “permanent fix” to Israel-Palestine conflict

Reiterating India’s support for a two-state solution, Jaishankar said that many more nations in the world now feel that a two-state solution is necessary and more urgent than before….reports Asian Lite News

Calling Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7 an act of terrorism, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that Israel should have been “very mindful” of civilian casualties in its response and emphasised its “obligation to observe international humanitarian law.”

He outlined key dimensions of the Israel-Palestine conflict so as to have a long term and a permanent solution to the issue.

Speaking at a panel discussion at the ongoing Munich Security Conference alongside US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and German Minister for Foreign Affairs Annalena Baerbock, Jaishankar said, “Well, I don’t have advice for my colleagues, though I particularly, I think all of us follow the enormous efforts which Tony (Antony Blinken) is putting in right now. But look, the way we look at it, there are different dimensions, different elements to this.

“Number one, we must be clear that what happened on October 7th was terrorism. No caveats, no justification, no explanation. It was terrorism. Number two, as Israel responds, it is important that Israel should be, should have been very mindful of civilian casualties, that it has an obligation to observe international humanitarian law,” he added.

He called the return of hostages “imperative” and emphasised the need for a humanitarian corridor to provide relief. Reiterating India’s support for a two-state solution, Jaishankar said that many more nations in the world now feel that a two-state solution is necessary and more urgent than before.

Jaishankar said, “Number three, the return of hostages is today imperative. Number four, there is a need for a humanitarian corridor, a sustainable humanitarian corridor to provide relief. And eventually, there has to be a permanent fix, a long-term fix, otherwise, we’re going to see a recurrence.”

“And I think today, suddenly, India has long believed in a two-state solution; we have maintained that position for many decades. And I think many more countries in the world today feel not just that a two-state solution is necessary, but it is more urgent than it was before,” he added.

In his remarks, Jaishankar stated that a large number of nations, particularly those in the Global South, believe that terrorism shouldn’t be justified. He said that these nations believe a two-state solution should not be delayed.

“I think a very large number of countries, especially those in the Global South, believe that terrorism shouldn’t be countenanced or justified. But they equally strongly believe that a two-state solution should not be delayed. These are not choices. These are both musts. And unless we are able to address both these issues, we are not going to really solve the problem,” EAM said.

Meanwhile, Blinken said the US is committed to Israel’s security and supports the proposition that Israel has to find ways to ensure that whatever happened on October 7 “never happens again.”

Speaking about US policy amid the Israel-Hamas conflict, Blinken said, “We’re committed to Israel’s security. That’s been clear from day one. It remains clear. And we understand and support the proposition that Israel has to find ways to make sure that what happened on October 7th never happens again. But we’ve also said and not only said, we’ve acted on the proposition, that, of course, the way Israel does that matters profoundly.”

“The way it does it in terms of trying to ensure greater protection for civilians who are caught in a crossfire of Hamas making. That’s absolutely essential. Making sure that people in need get the assistance they need. We are working on this every single day. And as we’ve seen this evolve over the last four months, things have happened as a result of our engagement, our intervention, that I would say probably would not have happened, almost certainly wouldn’t have happened without it. But it’s not enough, it’s insufficient. And that’s why we’re at it almost, literally, 24 hours a day,” he added.

Notably, the war between Israel and Hamas began after the latter launched an attack on the former on October 7, where around 1,200 Israelis were killed and around 250 taken hostage. Israel then launched a counterattack on Hamas and vowed to eliminate the terrorist group.

The Munich Security Conference (MSC) 2024 got underway on February 16 in the German capital and will conclude on Sunday. It is being held at the Hotel Bayerischer Hof in Munich, according to an official statement. (ANI)

EAM lauds Blinken’s West Asia tours

mid multiple conflicts and crises that have taken hold of West Asia, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday said all global partners of the US have aligned themselves and made common cause with the efforts at peace and resolution that Secretary of State Antony Blinken has been putting in through his visits to the region.

Speaking at a panel discussion at the ongoing Munich Security Conference on Saturday, Jaishankar said there was no justification for the ‘terrorism’ that was unleashed on the kibbutzes of southern Israel on October 7, last year.

“All of us follow enormous efforts which Tony (Antony Blinken) is putting in right now,but look the way we look at it has different dimensions, different elements to this,” Jaishankar said.

“We must be clear that what happened on October 7 was terrorism. No justification, no explanation, it was terrorism,” the EAM added.

The panel discussion, of which Jaishankar, Blinken and Baerbock were a part, was moderated by Roula Khalaf, the editor of the Financial Times, London.

As the discussion went on, Jaishankar underscored the urgent need for a sustainable, humanitarian corridor.

“As Israel responds, it is important that Israel… should have been very mindful of civilian casualties, that it has an obligation to observe humanitarian law,” Jaishankar said, adding that “the return of hostages is today imperative,” the EAM said, adding, “There is a need for a humanitarian corridor…a sustainable humanitarian corridor to provide relief.”

Blinken said the US has been committed to Israel’s security from ‘day one’.

“First, we are committed to Israel’s security, that has been clear from day one. And, we understand, and support the proposition that Israel has to find a way to make sure that, what happened on October 7 never happens again,” Blinken said.

“But, we have also said, and not only said, we have acted on the proposition, that the way Israel does that matters profoundly,” he addded.

The State Secretary further highlighted how multiple diplomatic engagements from the US side have resulted in getting a lot of things done, even as the Israel-Hamas war evolved in the last four months.

“…In terms of trying to ensure protection for civilians who are caught in the crossfire of Hamas’ making…that is absolutely essential— making sure that people in need get the assistance that they need, we are working on this every single day,” Blinken said.

“And, as we have seen the war evolve over the last 4 months, things have happened as a result of our engagements, I would say probably would not have happened..almost certainly would not have happened without it, but it is not enough…and that is why we are at it, almost 24 hours a day,” he added.

    Senate Democrats back two-state solution

Forty-nine of the 51 members of the Senate Democratic caucus backed an amendment supporting a negotiated solution to the conflict that results in Israeli and Palestinian states living side by side…reports Asian Lite News

An overwhelming majority of President Joe Biden’s fellow Democrats in the Senate on Wednesday backed a statement reiterating US support of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Forty-nine of the 51 members of the Senate Democratic caucus backed an amendment supporting a negotiated solution to the conflict that results in Israeli and Palestinian states living side by side, ensuring Israel’s survival as a secure, democratic, Jewish state and fulfilling the Palestinians’ “legitimate aspirations” for a state of their own.

Senator Brian Schatz introduced the measure as an amendment to an upcoming bill that would provide national security aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan.

“What will determine the future of Israel and Palestine is whether or not there’s hope. And the two-state solution has to be that hope,” Schatz told a news conference.

With war raging in Gaza between Israel and Hamas, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at a press conference this month that he objected to any Palestinian statehood that did not guarantee Israel’s security.

The statement provoked international concern, including from Israel’s biggest backer the United States. Washington maintains that the two-state solution is the only feasible way to bring lasting peace to the region.

The only two Democratic senators who did not sign onto the amendment were John Fetterman and Joe Manchin.

Fetterman has long supported a two-state solution, but he believed the measure should include language stipulating the destruction of Hamas as a precondition to peace, an aide said.

Manchin issued a statement, in which he said: “Once a Palestinian government with its peoples’ best interests at heart agrees that Israel should be a state, I will be the first one to sign on to a bipartisan amendment supporting that Israel recognize a Palestinian state.”

Many of Biden’s fellow Democrats in Congress have been pushing the administration to do more to address the steep toll on Palestinian civilians of Israel’s campaign against Hamas since the militant group’s deadly assault on Oct. 7.

Earlier, on Monday, US imposed its fifth round of sanctions on Hamas since October 7 attack, targeting the financial networks of the group. Along with the US, the sanctions on Hamas were imposed by the United Kingdom and Australia also.

“The United States is today imposing its fifth round of sanctions on Hamas since the October 7 attack on Israel. Today’s action targets networks of Hamas-affiliated financial exchanges in Gaza, their owners, and associates,” the US State Department said in a statement.

“Along with Australian and UK partners, we are imposing additional sanctions on Hamas. This is the fifth round of sanctions by the US since the October 7 attack. Today’s action targets Hamas-affiliated financial exchange networks in Gaza, their owners, and associates,” US State Department spokesperson Mathew Miller posted on X.

According to the State Department, the US action targets networks of Hamas-affiliated financial exchanges in Gaza, their owners, and associates.

In another major development, the US also designated Iraqi airline Fly Baghdad and its CEO for allegedly supporting the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Qods Force (IRGC-QF) and “Iran-aligned militia groups” in Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon.

“We are designating an Iraqi airline, its CEO, three individuals, and a business that support Kata’ib Hizballah. We are committed to exposing and taking actions against those who abuse their economies and engage in illegal activities to support groups destabilizing the region,” Miller said in a subsequent post.

“The United States is today designating Iraqi airline Fly Baghdad and its CEO for supporting the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Qods Force (IRGC-QF) and Iran-aligned militia groups in Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon,” the US State Department statement read.

It also identified two Iraq-registered aircraft owned by Fly Baghdad as ‘blocked property’.

The US also designated three leaders and supporters of Kata’ib Hizballah, one of the IRGC-QF’s Iran-aligned militias in Iraq, and one business that facilitates and launders funds for Kata’ib Hizballah.

“The IRGC-QF and Iran-aligned militia groups pose a significant threat to the Middle East region. Kata’ib Hizballah has been responsible for a series of drone and missile attacks against U.S. personnel in Iraq and Syria since Hamas’s horrific attack on Israel on October 7,” the State Department said in a statement.

It said that the evacuation order by Israeli authorities of middle Gaza has caused the ongoing forced displacement….reports Asian Lite News

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) on Thursday said that the over 150,000 Palestinians have nowhere to go amidst the ongoing war between Hamas and Israel, media reports said.

“People — young children, women carrying babies, people with disabilities & the elderly– have nowhere to go. They are forced to move again,” the UN aid agency said.

It said that the evacuation order by Israeli authorities of middle Gaza has caused the ongoing forced displacement.

“Only remaining hope is a humanitarian ceasefire,” the UNRWA said.

Jan Egeland, Secretary General of the Norwegian Refugee Council, has said that a staggering 1.9 million Palestinians in Gaza — more than 80 per cent of the population — have been internally displaced.

“Israel’s indiscriminate bombardment across Gaza has damaged over 250,000 housing units, with an additional 50,000 units completely destroyed. Consequently, more than 1 million people in Gaza lack a safe and secure home to return to,” Egeland said.

The Palestinian Authority controls areas of the West Bank, but not the Gaza Strip…reports Asian Lite News

The Israel government on Friday announced that “there will be no more Palestinian workers from Gaza” and that it was “severing all contact” with the Hamas-controlled enclave.

“Israel is severing all contact with Gaza. There will be no more Palestinian workers from Gaza. Those workers from Gaza who were in Israel on the day of the outbreak of the war will be returned to Gaza,” the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office said in a post on X.

It also added that the Israeli Security Cabinet has decided “to deduct all funds designated for the Gaza Strip — in addition to the deduction, required by law, of funds paid to terrorists and their families — from Palestinian Authority funds”.

The Palestinian Authority controls areas of the West Bank, but not the Gaza Strip.

Some 18,500 Palestinians from Gaza had received permits to enter Israel before the massive October 7 Hamas attack, the BBC reported citing Cogat, the Israeli defence body responsible for Palestinian civilian affairs, as saying.

Since then, Israel has launched a retaliatory bombardment of the Strip.

So far, a total of 9,061 Palestinians have been killed in the war, mostly women and children, while more than 32,000 people have been injured as a result of the raging violence, according to the latest update by the Gaza Health Ministry.

In Israel, there were about 1,400 casualties with some 5,400 people injured.

According to the Israeli authorities, 242 people are held captive in Gaza, including Israelis and foreign nationals.

Media reports indicate that about 30 of the hostages are children.

Till date, four civilian hostages were released by Hamas, and one female Israeli soldier was rescued by Israeli forces.
