11 Palestinians killed, many injured in Israeli raid

Israeli authorities said that suspects threw rocks, Molotov cocktails, and explosive devices at Israeli forces….reports Asian Lite News

At least 11 Palestinians were killed and more than 100 were injured during a rare daytime raid by Israeli military forces in the West Bank on Wednesday, as reported by CNN.

Israeli authorities said that Wednesday’s operation in Nablus targeted three suspects that were planning attacks on Israel. The three were neutralized, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) and Israel Security Agency said in a joint statement. The Islamic Jihad militant group said two of its commanders were killed in the clashes with Israeli troops, CNN reported.

The Lion’s Den militant group also confirmed its members were involved in the fighting but did not say if any of their members were killed.

One of the dead targeted in the Nablus raid was a Hamas member, the Palestinian militant group said. Hamas claimed Hussam Salim as a member and a martyr.

The IDF said one was shot while fleeing and the other two were killed in an exchange of fire with the military, CNN reported.

The IDF named him as one of their targets, accusing him of carrying out “shooting and explosive device attacks” and dispatching the killers of IDF soldier Ido Baruch last year. The IDF identified Salim as a senior operative of Lion’s Den, which claimed responsibility for the killing of Baruch in October of last year.

Israeli authorities said that suspects threw rocks, Molotov cocktails, and explosive devices at Israeli forces.

At least 102 people are injured, according to the official Palestinian News & Information Agency (WAFA) citing the Palestinian health ministry. Seven of the injured are in critical condition, WAFA reported.

Six of the dead were men in their 20s, the Palestinian health ministry said. One was 16, one was 33, one was 61 and one was 72. All were men, the ministry list of dead shows.

The raid brings the number of Palestinians killed by Israeli forces to 61 this year, the Palestinian health ministry said. That number includes people shot as they attacked Israelis, militants being targeted in raids, people clashing with Israeli forces during raids, and bystanders, CNN reported.

CNN reported that the Israeli military’s daytime raid began at around 10:15 am when everyone is out shopping in the open market of the old city.

As per the reports, most of the injured and dead are shot in the head, shoulders, and back.

Locals said there was a drone dropping tear gas and firing live ammunition, which the IDF denied.

“Israel did not operate drones that fired live ammunition in the West Bank,” Maj. Nir Dinar, an IDF spokesman, said as quoted by CNN.

The IDF’s Dinar said that he hoped it was not true that Israeli troops had prevented medics from reaching the wounded: “I am not familiar with such behaviour and I hope it did not happen. If they have evidence, let us know and we will take it to the commanders.”

Briefing journalists about the raid, the main IDF international spokesman, Lt. Col. Richard Hecht said that Israeli Security Agency and Border Police Special Forces had approached the house where they believed the suspects were located and told them to surrender.

“They didn’t surrender, they confined themselves into the house and opened extensive fire on our forces,” he said. One of the suspects tried to leave the house and was shot, he said, while the other two continued exchanging fire with the Israelis.

Eleven Israelis have been killed in Palestinian attacks this year: seven in a shooting near a synagogue, three in a car ramming attack, and a border police officer who was stabbed by a teenager and then shot by friendly fire from a civilian security guard.

IDF raids into the West Bank usually occur overnight; the last time the military conducted a daylight operation, they said it was because of an immediate threat.

An Israeli raid in the city of Jenin in January caused the deadliest day for Palestinians in the West Bank in over a year, according to CNN records, with at least 10 Palestinians killed on the day and one dying later of his wounds. One day later, at least seven civilians died in a shooting near a synagogue in Jerusalem – which Israel deemed one of its worst terror attacks in recent years.

This comes as Netanyahu leads a cabinet that has been described as the most far-right and religious in the country’s history. (ANI)

Abu Dhabi delegation explores biz opportunities in Israel

During the visit, the delegation participated in the 2023 OurCrowd Global Investor Summit, where they hosted the Abu Dhabi Pavilion showcasing business and investment opportunities in the emirate…reports Asian Lite News

A delegation of ten Abu Dhabi entities visited Israel from last week, to discuss business cooperation and innovation opportunities.

Led by the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO), the delegation included Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM), Abu Dhabi Residents Office (ADRO), Hub71, Abu Dhabi IPO Fund (ADIPOF), Masdar City, KEZAD Group and the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH).

The visit began with a welcome reception at the ADIO Israel office, and was attended by CEOs and senior management from more than 50 leading Israeli companies and ecosystem partners. During the visit, the delegation participated in the 2023 OurCrowd Global Investor Summit, where they hosted the Abu Dhabi Pavilion showcasing business and investment opportunities in the emirate.

Abdulla Abdul Aziz Al Shamsi, Acting Director-General of ADIO, said, “This visit builds on the collective progress made since the signing of the Abraham Accords, as Abu Dhabi believes in the power of partnership to drive innovation and support sustainable investment opportunities. ADIO looks forward to continuing the conversations started during this visit and working with innovative Israeli companies to explore Abu Dhabi’s limitless growth opportunities.”

During the visit, a strategic partnership between Integrated Data Intelligence (IDI), a subsidiary of OurCrowd and Hub71, Abu Dhabi’s global tech ecosystem, was signed to launch an AI-powered digital platform for Hub71’s Tech Barza initiative. It will provide a customised white label digital fintech platform and operational expertise to Tech Barza’s investor marketplace.

The agreement follows IDI’s Abu Dhabi expansion in November 2022, as part of a US$ 60 million investment by OurCrowd in the emirate in partnership with ADIO.

Commenting on the agreement, OurCrowd CEO Jon Medved said, “We believe this agreement with Hub71 is yet another significant milestone realised from OurCrowd’s long-term commitment and strategy to build out our business in the UAE and across the Middle East. We are very proud to have secured this agreement in such a short time after IDI’s launch. We believe this is strong validation of the decision we have made to build our home in Abu Dhabi. We were particularly excited to have made this joint announcement during OurCrowd’s 10th anniversary Global Investor Summit in Jerusalem together with Hub71.”

Ahmad Alwan, Deputy CEO of Hub71, commented, “As a leading tech startup destination in the Middle East, we have been marshalling multiple investment sources to support the fundraising journeys of founders. By partnering with OurCrowd’s IDI, we are employing a sophisticated digital investment platform that will further enable family offices and angel investors to identify game changing businesses from our community of 200 startups to capture value through our Tech Barza platform.”

Dr. Hasanat Dewan, CEO of IDI, stated, “We are very excited and honoured to have been selected by Hub71 to deliver this highly strategic platform. Building on the significant technology capabilities that have already been developed for the OurCrowd fintech platform, we intend to provide Hub71 with a next-generation, AI-powered digital platform that will materially advance the startup investment ecosystem in Abu Dhabi and provide seamless access to startups for investors that are part of the Tech Barza community.”

For his part, Dhaher bin Dhaher Al Mheiri, CEO of ADGM Authority, said, “The delegation to Israel further harnesses the underlying bi-lateral relations and economic ties between the two nations following the historic UAE-Israel Abraham Accord. In recent years, ADGM has doubled down on its efforts to leverage the competitive advantages of the UAE and Abu Dhabi and has established a flourishing and dynamic business environment for entrepreneurs and innovators through a robust regulatory framework and by creating vibrant business ecosystems. As an international financial Centre, ADGM encourages aspiring corporates and start-ups to establish their presence in Abu Dhabi, enjoy full ownership of their businesses in a zero-tax environment, secure the vital regulatory recognition, and gain the appropriate capital support and access to top-notch talent for their ambitions to thrive and grow.”

Over the course of the visit, the Abu Dhabi delegation held a series of meetings with Israeli entrepreneurs and investors to explore opportunities for potential collaboration and investment. The delegation also shared insights on the emirate’s thriving startup ecosystem and work to support the growth and development of innovative companies.

Following the Abraham Accords in September 2020, ADIO established an office in Tel Aviv in 2021 to support innovative Israeli companies looking to establish and expand their operations in the UAE capital.

In addition to its partnership with OurCrowd, ADIO recently announced that Israel’s Liquidity Group has joined its Innovation Programme to establish a FinTech R&D centre in Abu Dhabi. Israel strikes Gaza military post in response to rocket fire

This is the third time that Hamas military posts in Gaza have been bombed in response to launching rockets from the Strip toward Israel since January 1…reports Asian Lite News

Israeli fighter jets bombed a military post in the Gaza Strip early on Monday in response to a rocket launch from the Palestinian enclave on Saturday.

Sources with the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) told Xinhua that several explosions were heard in separate areas of the coastal enclave, which is home to more than two million Palestinians. Witnesses saw ambulances and civil defense crews moving to the bombing sites.

An Israeli army spokesman said in a statement that the underground post produced raw materials for manufacturing missiles and was run by the Hamas, Xinhua reported.

“The airstrike deals a serious blow to Hamas’ capabilities to fortify and arm itself,” the statement said.

On Saturday night, the Israeli army said that it had detected and intercepted one rocket launched from Gaza.

This is the third time that Hamas military posts in Gaza have been bombed in response to launching rockets from the Strip toward Israel since January 1.

The military escalation in Gaza came amid growing tensions between Israelis and Palestinians in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, causing more than 50 deaths, according to official figures.

Modi dials Netanyahu, discusses ways to boost bilateral ties

Ambassador Gilon said the change in the bilateral relationship between the two countries came after a first-ever visit of the Indian Prime Minister to Israel followed by Netanyahu’s visit to India…reports Asian Lite News

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday discussed ways to strengthen India-Israel relations and deepen cooperation in defence and security.

“Spoke with PM @netanyahu and discussed ways to strengthen the multifaceted India-Israel friendship, deepen our focus on innovation partnership, and our ongoing cooperation in defense and security,” Prime Minister Modi tweeted on Wednesday. Earlier on Wednesday, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu tweeted, “Just spoke with Indian PM @narendramodi about ways to strengthen the close relationship between #Israel and #India. Together we’ll advance security & economic relations, with a focus on high-tech. Exciting times ahead!”

Israeli Ambassador to India, Naor Gilon, recently said Prime Minister Modi’s ‘historic’ visit to Israel in 2017 broke the ice between the two nations and the famous picture of him with ex-Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu is one of the pictures that will stay as a symbol of how things are done.

“The famous picture of PM Modi with ex-Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu at the Olga beach is one that will stay as a symbol of how things are done,” Gilon told ANI while explaining the bond between India-Israel.

Ambassador Gilon said the change in the bilateral relationship between the two countries came after a first-ever visit of the Indian Prime Minister to Israel followed by Netanyahu’s visit to India.

“We have to say that there were visits before that of Indian President and Israeli President, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, but the visit of PM Modi and a few months later in 2017, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu came to India on January 18 – this was a game changer to relations between the two countries,” added Gilon.

PM Modi was on a visit to Israel from July 4-6, 2017, at the invitation of Netanyahu. The Prime Minister had called the visit “ground-breaking” after he was received personally by Netanyahu at the airport.

India established diplomatic relations with Israel in 1992 and since then, the relationship has evolved into a multi-dimensional partnership. “The relations started a little bit slower than hoped, but the big change in 1992 established full diplomatic relations between the two countries,” said Gilon.

The Israeli envoy expanded on how both countries upgraded relations to a strategic partnership, adding that several doors opened for cooperation.

“Thanks to that change, push that was done – we call it de-hyphenation — in a way India came and said- we have Palestinian issue and Pakistan, we have other issues-Israel will be dealt as Israel, the interest we have with Israel, not the interest we have with Palestine, we will deal with them or issues of Pakistan, other issues. I think this a very healthy approach which enabled a strong relationship between the two countries,” the envoy added. (ANI)

West ‘blocked’ Russia-Ukraine peace process: Former Israeli PM

Asked if the US and its allies “blocked” the peace process between Moscow and Kiev, Naftali Bennett said: “Basically, yes. They blocked it.”…reports Asian Lite News

Russia and Ukraine might have come to a peaceful settlement in April 2022, just over a month after their conflict broke out, but the Western powers blocked it, as per former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, reports said on Sunday.

In an a nearly five-hour-long video interview to Israel’s Channel 12 on Saturday, he claimed that his efforts as a middleman came close to succeeding as both Moscow and Kiev appeared to be ready to make concessions and agree to a truce, RT reported.

Bennett, however, said that the negotiations did not succeed because it was “a legitimate decision by the West to keep striking (Russian President Vladimir) Putin I mean the more aggressive approach”.

Asked if the US and its allies “blocked” the peace process between Moscow and Kiev, he said: “Basically, yes. They blocked it.”

“I claim there was a good chance of reaching a ceasefire. But I’m not claiming it was the right thing,” Bennett said.

Responding to the revelations, Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova termed it “yet another confession” that the West wasn’t interested in peace in Ukraine.

According to Bennett, his mediation “was coordinated down to the last detail with the US, France, and Germany”. But he said in wake of the fighting, there was no common approach among Western leaders as “(British PM) Boris Johnson adopted the aggressive line; (German Chancellor Olaf) Scholz and (French President Emmanuel) Macron were more pragmatic, and (US President Joe) Biden was both”.

Some 17 or 18 drafts of the peace deal between Moscow and Kiev had been prepared with his involvement, the former PM said. Bennet claimed that, among other things, he managed to secure a pledge from Putin that he was “not going to kill” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who feared for his life. The Russian leader was also ready to retract his demand for the demilitarization of Ukraine, while Zelensky promised to give up on his aspirations to join NATO, he added.

All discussion about peace ended on April 1, when Ukrainian authorities accused Russia of killing civilians in Kiev’s suburb of Bucha.

Israel, Sudan agree to normalise ties

Sudan is set to become the fourth Muslim Arab nation to sign a normalization agreement with Israel as part of the Abraham Accords…reports Asian Lite News

Following his return from a “historic” visit to Khartoum, Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen announced here that his country and Sudan have agreed to normalize ties and sign a peace agreement in Washington in a few months’ time.

Addressing a press conference here late Thursday, Cohen said that he met Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, chairman of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereign Council and de-facto leader of the country, and other senior officials during the day-long trip, Xinhua news agency reported.

The visit to Sudan which had been made “with the consent of the US, lays the foundations for a historic peace agreement with a strategic Arab and Muslim country”.

“The peace agreement between Israel and Sudan will promote regional stability and contribute to the national security of the State of Israel,” the Foreign Minister said.

Cohen said a signing ceremony is expected to take place after the planned transfer of power in Sudan to a civilian government following the military coup in October 2021 which was led by Al-Burhan.

In a separate statement issued in Khartoum, Sudan’s Sovereignty Council said the talks were held with the goal of establishing “fruitful relations with Israel” and strengthening bilateral cooperation in “agricultural, energy, health, water, education fields with special emphasis on security and military fields”.

But it did not say whether a peace agreement would be signed.

Sudan is set to become the fourth Muslim Arab nation to sign a normalization agreement with Israel as part of the Abraham Accords, a series of US-brokered normalization deals Israel reached with the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Morocco to establish official relations in 2020.

Egypt and Jordan signed peace treaties with Israel in 1979 and 1994 respectively.

In 2020, Sudan agreed to normalize its relations with Israel as part of a deal brokered by the administration of former US President Donald Trump.

An accord with Sudan holds particular symbolic importance as Khartoum was the venue for an Arab League meeting in 1967 where members vowed not to recognise Israel, after the Arab-Israeli war three months earlier.

In the same year, Washington had removed Sudan from its list of state sponsors of terrorism.

Blinken concludes Jerusalem visit amid tensions

Since the start of 2023, Israeli forces have killed at least 35 Palestinians, making January one of the most deadly months in the West Bank in recent years….reports Asian Lite News

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has concluded his visit to Jerusalem and the West Bank, with little progress made in de-escalating the Israeli-Palestinian tensions, experts said.

Blinken’s trip, during which he met with leaders of the Jewish state’s new right-wing government and the Palestinian Authority (PA), came amid escalating violence between the two sides, reports Xinhua news agency.

Since the start of 2023, Israeli forces have killed at least 35 Palestinians, making January one of the most deadly months in the West Bank in recent years.

Most casualties occurred during Israeli military raids, which Israel says aimed to detain Palestinian militants.

In retaliation, a shooting attack launched by a Palestinian gunman outside a synagogue in an Israeli settlement in East Jerusalem claimed the lives of seven people on January 27.

On Monday, Blinken held talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem and other senior officials before travelling on Tuesday to the West Bank city of Ramallah to meet Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

In both places, Blinken urged de-escalating the tensions and renewed the call for a two-state solution to the conflict.

“The rising tide of violence has resulted in the loss of many innocent lives on both sides,” he told reporters in Jerusalem on Tuesday before he left for the US.

“All sides must take steps to prevent further escalation of violence.”

The top US diplomat’s trip failed to offer any new initiative to solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Michael Milshtein, an expert from the Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies at the Tel Aviv University, told Xinhua.

Milshtein said the Israeli government was hopeful that Blinken will exert pressure on Abbas to renew the security coordination between the PA and Israel.

The PA decided on January 26 to end security coordination with Israel in response to an Israeli military raid in the West Bank city of Jenin, in which Israeli forces killed 10 Palestinians.

The security coordination has led to the arrests of some Palestinians who were allegedly planning attacks against Israelis.

In a statement issued after meeting with Blinken, Abbas made no indication he was going to resume the coordination.

He accused Israel of violating Palestinians’ rights, promoting annexation of the West Bank, and demolishing Palestinian homes — moves that pose further hurdles to achieving a peace deal.

“We have found that the Israeli government is responsible for what’s happening these days,” the President said.

Assaf Meydani, a professor at the Lauder School of Government, Diplomacy and Strategy of the Reichman University in Herzliya, told Xinhua that “negotiations between Israel and the PA in the current situation is impossible, even the US knows it”.

On the other hand, Blinken’s visit also had limited impact on the Israeli side, which has a new hawkish government that is unlikely to dial down its position against the Palestinians.

“The situation inside Israel makes the current government go to more ‘extreme’ to ensure its survival for the longest possible period, and therefore it will continue to escalate, and in return, there will be a Palestinian reaction,” said Ghassan al-Khatib, a political science professor at the Birzeit University in the West Bank city of Ramallah.

The visit, which marked the first meeting between Blinken and Netanyahu since the latter returned to office in December as the leader of a new right-wing government, was seen as part of Washington’s efforts to navigate through the differences between the Biden administration and the new Israeli government.

His trip followed the visits to Jerusalem by Biden’s National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and CIA Director William Burns earlier in January.

Al-Khatib also noted that the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is not a priority for the US as its attention is occupied by “other internal and external issues.”

The Palestinians have repeatedly called on Washington, as Blinken promised in 2021, to reopen the US consulate for Palestinians in Jerusalem and the PLO office in Washington.

They also urged the US to pressure Israel to preserve the status quo in Jerusalem and stop Israeli unilateral measures or withholding Palestinian tax revenue dues.

The last round of Israeli-Palestinian peace talks ended without progress due to deep differences on several key issues in March 2014, since which Washington has made no real push to renew the stalled peace process despite the recurrent violence and conflicts.

Blinken urges calm amid escalating conflict

Secretary Blinken said Israeli calls for vengeance “against more innocent victims are not the answer,” and “acts of retaliatory violence against civilians are never justified.”…reports Asian Lite News

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited Israel, urging Israelis and Palestinians to calm tensions and reiterating Washington’s “ironclad” commitment to Israel’s security.

As part of his three-leg Middle East tour, Blinken arrived in Israel after visiting Egypt. This was his first meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu since Netanyahu returned to office in December 2022 as the leader of a new extreme-right-wing and ultra-religious government.

At the airport upon his arrival, Blinken condemned the recent deadly attacks between Israelis and Palestinians.

“To take an innocent life in an act of terrorism is always a heinous crime,” he said, adding Israeli calls for vengeance “against more innocent victims are not the answer,” and “acts of retaliatory violence against civilians are never justified.”

In later joint statements with Netanyahu after their meeting, Blinken urged “all sides to take urgent steps to restore calm and to de-escalate.”

“We want to make sure that there’s an environment in which we can, I hope, at some point, create the conditions where we can start to restore a sense of security for Israelis and Palestinians alike, which of course is sorely lacking,” he said.

His visit coincided with a flare of violence between Israelis and Palestinians. Since the beginning of 2023, at least 35 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces, according to official Palestinian figures.

Netanyahu did not mention the regional tensions in his statement. Instead, he talked about the Iranian “aggression” and his wish to expand the so-called Abraham Accords signed in 2020 in which the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Morocco agreed to normalize ties with Israel.

“Expanding the circle of peace (and) working to close the issue of the Arab-Israeli conflict, I think, would also help us achieve a workable solution with our Palestinian neighbors,” Netanyahu said.

For his part, Blinken said while the United States supports more normalization deals and the integration of Israel in the Middle East, “these efforts are not a substitute for progress between Israelis and Palestinians.”

He repeated the U.S. commitment to a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

“As we advance Israel’s integration, we can do so in ways that improve the daily lives of Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza,” he said, noting Washington believes that establishing an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel is the way to move forward.

Blinken also had discussions with Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen and Israeli President Isaac Herzog.

The U.S. top diplomat has a scheduled trip to the Palestinian territories, where he will meet Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Tuesday.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas had earlier called on CIA director William Burns to pressure Israel to stop its “unilateral” measures against the Palestinians.

“It is important for an urgent intervention to pressure the new Israeli government headed by Benjamin Netanyahu to stop its unilateral measures and abide by the signed agreements,” Abbas was quoted by the official news agency WAFA as saying.

“It is important to restore the political horizon based on international resolutions, to achieve security and stability for everyone in the region,” Abbas told Burns during their meeting held at the presidential headquarters in the West Bank city of Ramallah.

Meanwhile, a Palestinian was killed on Monday morning by Israeli soldiers in the southern West Bank city of Hebron, Palestinian medics and eyewitnesses said.

In a statement, the Palestinian Health Ministry said that Nsim Abu Fouda, 24, died after he was shot in the head by Israeli soldiers.

However, Palestinian eyewitnesses said Israeli soldiers stationed at one of the Israeli army checkpoints in the city centre opened fire at a Palestinian car and seriously wounded Abu Fouda. He died from his wounds in hospital.

The Israeli authorities did not comment on the incident, Xinhua news agency reported.

Palestine puts onus on Israel

The Palestinian leadership warned of further deterioration that could threaten security and stability in the entire region. They say Israel is fully responsible for deadly escalation…reports Asian Lite News

Palestine officials blamed Israel for the current “serious” tension in the West Bank and Occupied East Jerusalem, which has left dozens of people dead this month.

“We hold the Israeli government fully responsible for the dangerous escalation that the situation has reached due to its crimes of killing, its continuation of settlement, the annexation of land, and the demolition of homes,” said a statement released by the Palestinian leadership after President Mahmoud Abbas held a meeting in the West Bank city of Ramallah.

“These policies are a result of the Israeli occupation government’s evasion of its commitment to implement the signed peace agreements and its violation of international resolutions,” the statement said.

The Palestinian leadership warned of further deterioration that could threaten security and stability in the entire region.

A gunman opened fire on people near a synagogue at a Jewish settlement in East Jerusalem on Friday, killing at least seven people and wounded three others, one day after the Israeli forces raided the Jenin refugee camp in the northern West Bank and killed nine Palestinians and wounded 16 others.

Palestinian factions, most notably Hamas and Islamic Jihad, vowed to respond to the escalation. The Palestinian Authority announced on Thursday the end of decades-long security coordination with Israel.

More clashes

Clashes between Palestinians and Israeli police erupted in Occupied Jerusalem Saturday night in the wake of two anti-Israeli attacks in the disputed holy city.

Israeli police entered Arab neighbourhoods in the city looking for people who may have assisted the assailants in the previous attacks, sparking clashes with Palestinians.

“The forces are encountering stone throwing, Molotov cocktails and fireworks,” said a police statement, adding the police’s increased operational readiness “will continue in the coming days.”

Footage on social media showed widespread firing of fireworks in several Jerusalem neighbourhoods.

Also on Saturday, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said that a Palestinian assailant shot at a restaurant near the Dead Sea. There were no casualties and the shooter escaped from the scene.

Israeli media also reported the Israeli military entered the West Bank Palestinian city of Jericho. The details of the raid were unclear and it was not confirmed by the military.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a security cabinet meeting later Saturday to discuss the response to the latest events, vowing the response “will be strong, swift and precise.”

Meanwhile, thousands of Jordanians took part in a demonstration in the capital Amman to protest the killing of Palestinians in Jenin by Israeli forces.

“The raids in the West Bank by the Israeli forces are unjustified and innocent Palestinians were killed, including women and children,” said Mohammad Abu Freij, one of the demonstrators.

“We are here to show our support to our brotherly Palestinians and to make our voices heard,” he added.

Jumaa Halaweh, another demonstrator aged 57, said the Arabs and Muslims should “exert more efforts other than just condemnations to stop the Israel aggression.”

On Thursday, Jordan’s Foreign Ministry denounced the Israelis’ escalating military campaign and warned of a “new wave of violence,” urging Israel to halt all military operations against Palestinians and refrain from illegitimate procedures that would undermine the two-state solution and opportunities for peace.

The raids come a few days after King Abdullah II of Jordan met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Amman. During the meeting, the king stressed the need to maintain calm and cease all acts of violence in order to pave the way for a political horizon for the peace process.

Earlier on Thursday, the Israeli army force stormed the Jenin refugee camp in the northern West Bank and killed nine Palestinians, including an elderly woman, and wounded 16, four of them in serious condition, according to Palestinian Health Ministry.

In another development, thousands of Israelis demonstrated on Saturday in several cities to protest the government’s plan to make sweeping reforms in the judicial system.

The protests have continued for a few consecutive weeks against the newly sworn-in government led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The demonstrators say the planned reforms will weaken the courts and give the ruling coalition limitless power.

The Netanyahu-led far-right coalition says the changes are necessary in order to limit the judicial system which has become too powerful in recent decades. They also complain that the Supreme Court often intervenes in political issues that should be determined by the parliament.

Netanyahu has vowed to push forward with the reforms despite the protests. His opponents say the reforms are personally motivated as the longest-serving Israeli leader himself is on trial for various counts of corruption.

The reforms will give the parliament the ability to override Supreme Court rulings with a simple majority. In addition, politicians will have greater influence in appointing Supreme Court judges, and legal advisers to the ministries will be political appointments rather than civil servants.
