As part of the Italy Pavilion’s events dedicated to the Expo 2020 Dubai’s Space Week, Italy-headquartered high-technology company Leonardo organised the international conference themed “The Lunar Space Economy: The First Steps Towards an Interplanetary Generation”, on 19th October, 2021.

The main theme of the event was Moon exploration, the next critical step for space agencies around the world and private entrepreneurs. The return to the lunar surface is a crucial factor in developing an interplanetary generation that will protect humanity on Earth and in the future could also be called to guide us towards new places to live in outer space.

Leonardo Chief Executive Officer, Alessandro Profumo highlighted, “Our collective ambitions in space also matter to our own planet and its future. Making interplanetary exploration more sustainable by using lunar resources is one aim. But there is a second goal: to improve our quality of life on Earth.”

Space could offer essential resources that will be scarce or costly to the Earth’s environment. “Think about rare-Earth elements for electronic devices, for example. There are also opportunities to advance science and technology in areas like power generation, energy storage, recycling, and advanced robotics,” Profumo added.

Exploration, mining and recovering technologies and potential solutions for a living habitat on the Moon are some of the themes covered at the event by agencies and institutions, academia, industries and astronauts, who discussed how to create synergies to make the equation 2+2=5 work.

Italy, renowned for its centuries of experience trying to preserve its rich artistic culture, has used its presence at a world fair in Dubai to launch a project to help other nations around the Mediterranean rescue heritage at risk.

Italy has already hit the headlines with its pavilion at Expo 2020 which opened at the start of the month following a year-long delay because of the pandemic.

    Expo 2020

Central to its national display is a reproduction of Michelangelo’s David, made using one of the world’s largest 3D printers and based on 40 hours of digital scanning of the original 16th-century marble sculpture that stands in Florence.

Grazia Tucci, an engineering professor at the University of Florence, said the model is an example of the kind of work its centre will promote.

“Like the Bamiyan Buddhas (in Afghanistan) or Palmyra’s Arch of Triumph (in Syria), our cultural heritage is at risk. At risk from nature and also from human beings,” said Tucci, who will head the centre.

Speaking at the project’s launch on Sunday, she said it was essential to preserve heritage for future generations and Italy would share “the best technologies” to train professionals from around the Mediterranean in preserving, digitising and restoring objects and sites that could be lost to violence.

Hybrid courses, involving online and in person sessions, will be launched over the coming weeks and the Advanced Vocational Training Centre for the Digitization and Re-construction of Cultural Heritage will remain at the Italian pavilion after the world fair closes in March. It is not yet clear for how long.

Based on the theme “Beauty connects people,” the pavilion is among almost 200 stands at Expo 2020 Dubai representing 192 countries. It is the first world fair to be held in the Middle East and follows Expo 2015 in Milan.

Organisers hope to attract 25 million visits. They have not released visitor figures officially, but the UAE National newspaper said more than 50,000 people have visited so far from 170 different nationalities.

55 Italian firms present innovative solutions to tackle climate challenges

A total of 55 Italian companies participated at the Water, Energy, Technology, and Environment Exhibition (WETEX 2021), at Dubai Exhibition Centre, Expo 2020 Dubai…reports Asian Lite News

This was the largest presence this year of Italy ever at WETEX, which concluded its activities on Thursday. Italian SMEs and startups showcased the latest innovations in integrating components of the ecosystem, all in line with Italy’s National Sustainable Development Strategy to implement the UN 2030 Agenda and achieve the sustainable development goals.

The UAE is seeing increased participation from Italian companies in its trade fairs. At WETEX, in particular, the Italian exhibitors will impart know-how from different regions of Italy in the sustainable management of natural resources.

Nicola Lener, Ambassador of Italy to the UAE, said, “Italy’s long-standing relationship with the UAE spans across various sectors. Opportunities for cooperation between the two countries are built around innovation, renewable energy, water solutions, technology, infrastructure, SMEs, startups, smart cities and the circular economy – all are key in the UAE Vision to build a future economy.

“With Italy being Europe’s second-largest manufacturer and the world’s sixth exporting country of technologies used exclusively in renewable energy sources, Italian companies shared their expertise at the 23rd edition of WETEX. As a leader in the sector, the country has developed the Integrated National Plan for Energy and Climate, which aims to increase its share of renewables to 32 percent by 2030, increasing power generated by renewables to 65 percent.”

From his part, Amedeo Scarpa, Italian Trade Commissioner to the UAE, said, “The trade exchange figures between Italy and the UAE reflect our strong bilateral and economic relations. The UAE is the largest Gulf trading partner to Italy, while Italy is the 2nd largest European partner to the UAE. In the renewable energy sector, Italian export increased by 11 percent in the 1st half of 2021. It has even increased by almost 4percent compared to 2019 before the global pandemic started.”

He added, “We put a spotlight on the innovative startups that can take companies through open innovation processes, industrial innovation 4.0, and implementation of new digital solutions. We take pride in the works that continue the Italian tradition of mechanics applied to industrial processes and ‘Made in Italy’ products that are backed by research, use quality materials, and are enhanced by modern technologies.”

A high-level symposium was organised to commemorate the 20th death anniversary of Afghanistan’s guerrilla commander Ahmed Shah Massoud in Rome, Italy. The event was organised on Friday by the Embassy of Afghanistan in Rome, in collaboration with several other groups.

The event titled “Afghanistan, Taliban and the Future” was attended by several people including Yara Ehm, Member of the Italian Parliament and Commission on Foreign Affairs, Gabriela Colarusso, La Repubblica’s foreign affairs correspondent, Gaja Pellegrini, Margherita Stancati from the Wall Street Journal and other representatives of the international and local media.

The Diplomatic Missions of Ireland and the Czech Republic were represented by their Deputy Heads of Mission.

Khalid Zekriya, Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to Italy spoke about the need for the International community to recognise that Afghanistan today is in the hands of a government of terrorists who did not represent the Afghan hopes and dreams which were sown by the blood of “martyrs like Ahmad Shah Massoud.”

“Massoud’s sacrifice was important because it laid the basis for the modern state of Afghanistan; something that Pakistan backed Taliban government will try and destroy in the days to come. Afghans, however, are resilient people and the scenes today of women protesting will be more common in the coming days and months,” said Khalid Zekriya.

Honouring the sacrifice of the Italian soldiers he also remembers that thousands of Afghan soldiers have laid down their lives for defending their homeland. Khalid Zekriya said, “The narrative that the Afghan defence forces just collapsed was a terrible propaganda, as since 2012 most of the fighting was being done by Afghan soldiers.”

Zakariya even mentioned that there is more to what meets the eye. Without direct orders from above, the Afghan defence forces would not have folded, he added.

Laura Harth, the human rights activist, spoke of the importance of a global alliance to protect freedom and democracy. She recounted their recent battles to assist democracy in Hong Kong against Chinese oppression and feared that the violence would be much more in Afghanistan against women, journalists and minorities.

Emilio Ciarlo of the Italian Agency for cooperation and development, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, spoke of the need for national building. He underlined the risks of an unstable Afghanistan for the world. “The failure of the West to assist democracy will reverberate in the Balkans as well as North Africa and will be a danger to Europe, with the increase in the flow of narcotics as well as weapons and a more militant Islam.”

Fausto Biloslavo, a veteran journalist, who just returned from Panjshir to Kabul joined virtually. He underlined the suspension of rights of journalists and the fear of the local population currently. Biloslavo stated that the people are gathering to vent out their disaffection with the Taliban and their morale is high and the resistance will expand its support and reach.

“It was all like a castle of sand which collapsed in a few days,” said FawziaKoofi, Parliamentarian in the previous government, describing the fall of Kabul. She requested the world community to support the rights and freedom for women and children and check the transgression of the Taliban towards the minorities and weaker sections.

Ahmed Wali Massoud, the brother of the slain leader 20 years ago, who joined virtually summarised the evening, paying tribute to his brother and his vision for Afghanistan.

He stated that it is important that the world carefully follow the alleged Pakistani involvement in the country as this will only lead to further destabilisation. Afghanistan needs to be inclusive and a country for all, beyond ethnic and religious lines. (ANI)

5.9% growth projected for Italy this year

“A stronger-than-expected second quarter explains the upward revision from the 4.5 per cent expansion forecast for 2021 in the OECD’s May Economic Outlook,” the survey said…reports Asian Lite News.

The Italian economy will grow by 5.9 per cent in 2021, and return to the levels registered in 2019 by the first half of next year, said the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

In its latest Economic Survey of the country unveiled on Monday, the Organization said: “Italy’s economy is recovering steadily from the Covid crisis, thanks to the vaccination campaign and generous fiscal support to households and firms.”

After the 5.9 per cent growth projected for this year, the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) is expected to expand by 4.1 per cent in 2022, following the steep 8.9 per cent fall registered in 2020, reports Xinhua news agency.

“A stronger-than-expected second quarter explains the upward revision from the 4.5 per cent expansion forecast for 2021 in the OECD’s May Economic Outlook,” the survey said.

Addressing the presentation press conference alongside OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann, Italy’s Economy and Finance Minister Daniele Franco said the government was “aiming at a post-Covid growth higher than that (registered) before the pandemic-related crisis”.

“We must overcome the long stagnation, this is our main goal,” Franco said.

He said the country’s official economic forecasts and estimates of public finance targets will now be reviewed and presented in the update to the Economic and Financial Document (DEF) usually unveiled in late September.

In April, the Economy and Finance Ministry had predicted Italy’s GDP would grow by 4.5 per cent in 2021, in line with the previous OECD forecast, 4.8 per cent in 2022, and 2.6 per cent in 2023.

While presenting the report, the OECD chief noted the National Recovery and Resilience Plan provided by the Italian government would activate “stronger, greener, fairer and more digitalized growth that will benefit all Italians, with improved opportunities to get ahead”.

Presented earlier this year and passed by the European Union (EU) authorities, Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan is worth 222.1 billion euros ($263 billion) overall, mostly financed through the Next Generation EU program launched in 2020 to help member states restart their economies after the Covid-19 crisis.

In the survey, the OECD said Italy’s “generous” supportive policies during the coronavirus crisis “mitigated job losses and hardship and preserved productive capacity,” and loan guarantees and moratoria on debt repayments supported firm liquidity and limited bankruptcies.

“Significant fiscal support in 2021 will buoy the near-term recovery, as vaccination rates accelerate and restrictions ease,” it predicted.

“Higher public investment, including from Next Generation EU funds, will support private sector investment, alongside higher confidence and demand… Consumption is expected to rise as households are able to consume part of their savings and employment recovers.”

Yet, the Organization recommended the country not to halt its supportive fiscal policy towards households and firms “until the recovery is firmly underway”.

“Withdrawing liquidity support too early could force otherwise viable firms into bankruptcy,” it warned.

“It would also raise unemployment and poverty, which were already high before Covid, affecting youth and women particularly.”

Once the pandemic subsides, the OECD recommended Italy to reform public spending and tax policy, among other sectors.

“Ageing-related expenses crowd out investment in infrastructure, education, and training,” penalising the young, many of whom are out of work and at risk of poverty, it said.

As for the tax policy, Italy was encouraged to reduce the complexity of the system and to lower labour taxes.

Among other recommendations, the OECD suggested Italy raise investment and productivity by cutting the stock of regulations, minimising regulatory barriers to enter professional services, and providing a long-term plan on carbon prices and supportive policies to reduce the costs of energy transition.

Italian authorities on Wednesday (local time) said that the island of Sicily may have set an all-time heat record for Europe, with a temperature of 48.8 degrees Celsius (119.8 degrees Fahrenheit).

The record in Italy was confirmed by Sicilian authorities but needs to be officially verified by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), reported CNN.

“At the moment there are no reasons to invalidate it, but if possible we will make an ex-post evaluation on the accuracy of the measure,” said the Sicilian Agrometeorological Information Service, Sicily’s official weather station operator.

The city of Siracusa hit the record as an anticyclone — which Italian media reports are referring to as “Lucifer” — swept in and continued to move north up the country, reported CNN.

Moreover, a persistent heatwave around the Mediterranean in Europe and North Africa has contributed to some of the worst fires seen there in years.

Earlier, the hottest temperature ever recorded in Europe was 48.0°C (118°F) in Athens, Greece in 1977, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

As per scientists, it’s the climate crisis that is making heatwaves and fires more frequent and intense, and therefore more destructive, reported CNN.

An authoritative report by the UN’s International Panel on Climate Change published Monday said that 38 weather conditions that promote wildfires have become more probable in southern Europe over the last century. Globally, the heat waves and droughts worsening fires have increased too.

Temperatures around the Mediterranean have been 5 to 10 degrees C higher than average this week and dozens of people have died in wildfires tearing across southern Europe and North Africa, most of them in Algeria, where at least 69 people have been killed.

Deaths have been recorded in Turkey as well, which is now also experiencing flooding on the Black Sea coast, leaving at least nine people dead. Parts of Italy and Greece have also been badly hit by fires, where some villages have been largely destroyed, reported CNN. (ANI)
