    External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar discussed India-Japan economic and technology cooperation during his meeting with chairman of Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) Tadashi Maeda on Tuesday in New Delhi.

    Taking to his official Twitter handle, Jaishankar wrote, “Nice to meet Chairman of Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), Tadashi Maeda.” “Discussed India-Japan economic and technology cooperation and its further prospects,” Jaishankar added.

    Earlier, in May, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman met Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC)’s Governor Hayashi Nobumitsu on the sidelines of the 56th Asian Development Bank (ADB)’s annual meeting, in Incheon, a city in South Korea.

    During the discussions, Hayashi informed FM Sitharaman that JBIC has already made an investment of USD 5 billion in infrastructure and manufacturing sectors in India and stated that JBIC is also looking at opportunities in the marine food processing sector in India.

    According to the finance ministry’s tweet, the finance minister encouraged the engagement of JBIC with Indian financial institutions such as the Exim Bank, National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF) and lending banks to leverage the strength and complementarities of both countries for facing local, regional and global financial challenges.     External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is all set to embark on a four-day official visit to Tanzania on Wednesday to hold high-level talks and co-chair the 10th Joint Commission Meeting with his counterpart, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a release.

    During his visit, Jaishankar will call on the top leadership of the East African country and also attend a reception onboard Indian Naval Ship Trishul. He will also address the Indian diaspora and inaugurate the bust of Swami Vivekananda. During his four-day visit to the African nation, Jaishankar will first visit Zanzibar from July 5 to 6, where he will visit a water supply project funded by the Government of India line of credit, call on top leadership, and also attend a reception onboard the Indian Naval Ship Trishul, which is visiting Tanzania.

    “EAM will thereafter visit the Dar-es-Salaam city of Tanzania from 07-08 July 2023, where he will co-chair the 10th India-Tanzania Joint Commission Meeting with his counterpart and call on the country’s top leadership, including several Cabinet rank Ministers,” the official release said.

    “During the visit, he will meet with the members of the Parliamentary Friendship Group for India and inaugurate an India-Tanzania business meeting. EAM will also be addressing the Indian diaspora and inaugurating the bust of Swami Vivekananda in Dar es Salaam,” the release added.

    India and Tanzania share close and friendly relations. In strengthening the education ties between the two countries, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) will open its first-ever overseas campus in Tanzania’s Zanzibar in October 2023 with a batch of 50 undergraduate students and 20 master’s students, The Citizen reported.

    The new IIT campus will be set up in Zanzibar under the name IIT Madras at Zanzibar. Zanzibar will be one of three campuses outside of India, with the others located in Abu Dhabi and Kuala Lumpur.

    The Citizen is a Tanzanian Daily reporting on political and social issues of Tanzania and the African region.

    India and Tanzania also saw the second edition of the Joint Defence Cooperation Committee (JDCC) meeting between the two countries, which was held in Arusha on June 28 and 29, earlier this year.

    In the JDDC meeting, the two sides discussed enhancing security in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), the Ministry of Defence said in a statement.

    The Indian delegation highlighted the growing prowess of the Indian defence manufacturing to export to friendly countries.

    A five-year roadmap for defence cooperation was also agreed to between the two sides, which covers initiatives ranging from customised training and capacity building to maritime cooperation, infrastructure building and collaboration in defence equipment and technology, the defence ministry official added.     ‘Vote bank politics driving Canada’s response to Khalistani activities’

    Notably, there has been a rise in Khalistan activities in Canada lately.

    Reacting to the rise in ‘Khalistani’ activities in Canada, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that Ottawa seems to be driven by “vote-bank politics” and this has also impacted the ties between the two countries lately.

    He was speaking at a town hall meeting at the India International Centre, New Delhi in the national capital. Speaking to the reporters, Jaishankar said, “How Canada has dealt with the Khalistani issue is a longstanding issue for us, because very frankly, they seem to be driven by vote bank politics. Their responses have been constrained by what they regard as vote bank compulsions. We made it very clear that if there are activities which are permitted from Canada that impinge on our sovereignty, territorial integrity and our security, then we will have to respond”.

    “It is something which is a continuing conversation with Canada, not always satisfactory, but something on which we have been very clear. And over the last few years, you can see that this has impacted our ties in many ways,” he added.

    Notably, there has been a rise in Khalistan activities in Canada lately.

    Earlier this month, a tableau parade was organised in Ontario celebrating the assassination of former PM Indira Gandhi, which drew severe criticism from New Delhi.

    In March this year, Khalistan supporters protested outside the Indian Embassy in Canada. They raised pro-Khalistan slogans and allegedly assaulted Indian-origin journalists present on the spot.

    Speaking further, Jaishankar hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to the United States, and added that India is also focussing on concluding the free trade agreements with Europe.

    “Today, it is a very polarised world, and the global stage is so much more challenging. Our relations with the United States are exceptionally well. We have had the most productive visit in history,” the EAM said.

    He added, “We have moved into a positive domain with the US for shaping the world for common purposes. The attention being given to Europe is remarkable. The big issue before us is concluding the free trade agreement, but we are more hopeful than we have been in past”.

    The EAM further added that the India-Russia ties have remained steady despite all the turbulence.

    “Our relations with Russia have been kept steady despite all turbulence. We have made our own evaluation over the years regarding the importance of this. It is a mistake to dumb down ties with Russia to just defence dependences. We have an upswing in the economic part of our relations with Russia,” he said. (ANI)

    Jaishankar met Bangladesh Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen, Minister of State Development UK Andrew Mitchell and France Minister of State Development Chrysoula Zacharopoulou.

    Earlier in the day, EAM Jaishankar extended greetings to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and the people of Russia on the occasion of the country’s National Day.

    Jaishankar also said that India looks forward to continued cooperation under the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between the two countries.

    “Warm Greetings to FM Sergey Lavrov and the Government and people of the Russian Federation on their National Day. Look forward to our continued cooperation under our Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership,” Jaishankar said in a tweet.

    Jaishankar had met Lavrov during the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ meeting in South Africa’s Cape Town earlier this month and discussed topical issues of the bilateral agenda, as well as international and regional problems.

    The two ministers had also praised the dynamism of collaboration in the most significant sectors of the strategic partnership between India and Russia.

    On Monday, Jaishankar also welcomed delegates at the venue for the G20 Development Ministers’ Meeting in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi. The event began on Sunday and will continue till June 13.

    Jaishankar will chair the G20 Development Ministers’ Meeting scheduled between June 11-13 and a total of 200 delegates are expected to attend the meeting.

    The Development Ministers’ Meeting in Varanasi takes place in the midst of mounting developmental challenges that have been made worse by the slowdown in the global economy, debt distress, the effects of climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss, rising poverty and inequality, the cost of living crisis, supply chain disruptions around the world, and geopolitical tensions and conflicts.

    The Varanasi gathering follows the Voice of the Global South Summit, which was hosted by India in January 2023.

    The decisions made at the Varanasi meeting will also have an impact on the United Nations SDG Summit, which will be held in New York in September.

    Further, according to the official release, the meeting will consist of two main sessions — one on ‘Multilateralism: Collective Actions for Accelerating Progress towards SDGs’ and another on ‘Green Development: A LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) Approach’.

    Delegates from Brazil, Germany, Japan, Indonesia and China on Sunday arrived at the Varanasi Airport. Delegates experienced the culture of Varanasi and attended Ganga Aarti at the city’s Dashashwamedh Ghat yesterday.

    Delegates to the G20 Development Ministers’ Meeting along with the EAM Jaishankar took part in the Ganga Arti ritual at the Dashashwamedh Ghat in Varanasi on Sunday evening. Jaishankar led the delegates on a cruise ride and sightseeing of the ghats.

    Earlier, they were welcomed in a traditional way at Namo Ghat. Seeing the cultural artists dance, the delegates also shook a leg. Following this, they boarded the cruise vessel and reached Dashashmaved Ghat. During the Aarti, there was a special Shankhnaad for the guests.

    At the G20 Development Ministers’ meeting in Varanasi a new roadmap for the development of global agriculture in 20 developing countries of the world including India will be prepared.

    Agricultural scientists from all nations will brainstorm on the issues of agriculture, agricultural education, research etc. in the G20 meeting.

    He also met Australian development minister Pat Conroy on the sidelines of the meeting.

    “Glad to welcome Australian Development Minister Pat Conroy in Varanasi for the G20DMM. Naturally, we spoke about PM Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Australia. Also discussed how our two countries can cooperate on development issues in the Pacific,” Jaishankar said.

    The event that began on Sunday will continue till June 13.

    To give the delegates a taste of Varanasi’s rich culture and traditions, cultural programmes, exhibitions, and excursions have also been planned. A total of 200 delegates are expected to attend the meeting. (ANI)

    Jaishankar opens IT centre at Namibia University

    The India Namibia Centre of Excellence in Information Technology (INCEIT) is built with Indian assistance…reports Asian Lite News

    External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar inaugurated the Namibia University’s fully equipped IT center, known as The India Namibia Centre of Excellence in Information Technology (INCEIT) built with Indian assistance.

    The center, equipped with cutting-edge IT infrastructure, is a product of the collaborative efforts between India and Namibia in development, cooperation, and capacity-building. “It is an outcome of the development, cooperation and capacity-building partnership between India and Namibia. And it is being pursued in line with the shared desire to develop human resources, especially of the youth, and give them the right skills in the technology domain,” he said.

    While addressing the inauguration event of the INCEIT, EAM Jaishankar said that it reflects the long-standing people-to-people friendship and linkages between India and Namibia.

    This centre started offering courses going back to November 2019, when the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC) provided the course materials, the reference books and much of the IT hardware and software, EAM said.

    “The remaining installations were completed in very challenging circumstances during the Pandemic,” Jaishankar added.

    Speaking on the trainers teaching at the INCEIT, EAM informed that six master trainers from Namibia were given training in CDAC in India.

    The Centre is additionally equipped with a CDAC PARAM Supercomputer with High-Performance Computing (HPC) Applications. Now, since its deployment, the supercomputer has seen the installation of numerous application software to ensure its optimum usage.

    Acknowledging the support and collaboration of the Vice Chancellor and his team, Minister Jaishankar expressed gratitude for their “unstinted support and collaboration to make this project a reality with the objective of developing industry-oriented programmes to address skill requirements in areas such as cybersecurity, big data analytics and e-governance applications and software development.”

    The Centre has been able to offer courses and to train more than 275 professionals, government officials from various ministries students, teachers and researchers, Jaishankar informed.

    Jaishankar also appreciated a student who won a reward in a cybersecurity competition.

    “I’m happy to note that a student from this very centre has won a trophy with the first position at the 6th Namibia National Cybersecurity Competition,” Jaishankar said.

    “The courses that the centre is offering are truly vital for Namibia in building a knowledge society, and this has to be done on the foundations of innovation and technology which will emerge from here,” he added.

    Jaishankar said that India’s home-developed Unified Payment Interface (UPI) has revolutionised digital transactions in India, taking financial inclusion, to new levels that 40 per cent of the world’s real-time digital payments take place in India.

    Speaking on the INCEIT again, Jaishankar said that the unique feature of this centre is that it is powered by the Param Supercomputer rightly named Arup.

    The Centre is additionally equipped with a CDAC PARAM Supercomputer with High-Performance Computing (HPC) Applications.

    Now, since its deployment, the supercomputer has seen the installation of numerous application software to ensure its optimum usage.

    “This centre is the latest in our strong partnership with Africa, which particularly targets the gen next in Africa and India. It has been established in several locations across the continent vocational training centres, IT centres, science and technology parks, entrepreneurship development centres and geoinformatics applications for rural development,” Jaishankar said while concluding his address.

    A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between India and Namibia to create and operate the India Namibia Centre of Excellence in Information Technology (INCEIT) for training in specialised areas of Information Technology. The government of India initiated a proposal for the setting up of CEIT with the intent of having international outreach for imparting ICT education in Namibia.

    The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC) signed an Agreement on July 16th, 2018 for the setting up of an India Namibia Centre of Excellence in Information Technology (INCEIT) at the Namibia University of Science & Technology. (ANI)

    External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday held a meeting with Minister of State for Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Affairs Lord Tariq Ahmad and discussed a range of issues including Free Trade Agreement, Indo-Pacific and G20.

    “Met with UK MOS Lord @tariqahmadbt today in New Delhi. Discussed a broad range of issues, from FTA and South Asia to Indo-Pacific and G20. Underlined the obligation to ensure security of our diplomatic missions and prevent misuse of democratic freedoms,” Jaishankar said in a tweet. UK and India are working towards a mutually beneficial Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The ninth round of negotiations for a free trade agreement between India and the UK was held from April 24 to 28.

    Lord Tariq Ahmad, who is Minister of State for Foreign Commonwealth & Development Affairs (South Asia, MEastNAfrica, UN, Human Rights) PM’s Special Envoy for Preventing Sexual Violence, landed in India on May 27. After his arrival in India, he travelled to Jodhpur.

    “…I arrived in Jodhpur, my maternal ancestral home. 76 years after my mother bid farewell to the Blue City I say ‘Salaam Jodhpur- Namaste Rajasthan’,” he said in a tweet.

    The UK government had said that focus of Lord Tariq Ahmad’s visit on science, technology and innovation emphasises the UK’s commitment to deepening partnerships in these areas across the globe – evidenced by the recent announcement of a new Tech Envoy to the Indo-Pacific.

    “Strengthening the UK-India relationship is a key pillar of the UK’s long-term foreign policy, as part of its enduring engagement in the Indo-Pacific set out in the Integrated Review Refresh,” it said.

    UK and India are working towards a mutually beneficial Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The ninth round of negotiations for a free trade agreement between India and the UK was held from April 24 to 28.

    The British High Commission in India in a statement said, “An ambitious, balanced FTA would boost our current trading relationship, worth £36 billion in 2022. ” Round nine of negotiations for a free trade agreement between the United Kingdom and the Republic of India

    “A trade deal with India supports the government’s growth strategy to take advantage of the UK’s status as an independent trading nation, creating new trade and investment opportunities and championing free trade,” the British High Commission in India said in a statement.

    In the statement, Lord Ahmad called India and UK “trusted partners.” He said that India and UK are deepening collaboration on science and technology.

    “The UK and India are trusted partners united by the unique living bridge that closely connects our countries and people,” Lord Ahmad said in a statement.

    “Building on the 2030 Roadmap for India-UK future relations, we are deepening our collaboration on science and technology, bringing new innovations to both our nations,” he added.

    Lord Ahmad meets Shringla

    Lord Ahmad, who is on a 5-day visit to India, met the former foreign secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla in Delhi on Monday.

    Apart from the UK Minister, the former Foreign Secretary also had a brief interaction with British deputy high commissioner Christina Scott. “A great pleasure to meet Lord @tariqahmadbt, UK Minister in FCO and @CScottFCDO, UK Deputy High Commissioner @UKinIndia,” Shringla said, taking to Twitter.

    During his visit, Lord Ahmad will travel to Hyderabad. He will highlight science and tech innovations with trips to T-Hub and T-Works, the technology start-up incubator and prototyping facility which are part of the world’s largest innovation campus, and space launch vehicle company Skyroot.

    Lord Ahmad will visit the National Institute of Animal Biotechnology and hold discussions on the further potential for science and technology collaboration with Indian alumni of Chevening, the UK’s flagship international scholarship programme.

    Christina Scott, Acting British High Commissioner to India in the statement said, “The UK and India enjoy an invaluable partnership.     External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met Russian Ambassador Denis Alipov on Thursday evening and has asserted to take the discussions on bilateral cooperation in the India-Russia Intergovernmental Commission for Trade, Economic, Scientific & Cultural Cooperation (IRIGC-TEC) framework to a higher level.

    EAM Jaishankar and Alipov also spoke about the ensuing BRICS Foreign Ministers’ meeting in South Africa. South Africa will host the meeting of BRICS Foreign Ministers in Cape Town.

    “Pleasure to meet Russian Ambassador Denis Alipov today evening. Discussed our bilateral cooperation, including in the IRIGC-TEC framework. Looking forward to taking that to a higher level. Also spoke about the forthcoming BRICS Foreign Ministers’ meeting in South Africa,” Jaishankar tweeted.

    Earlier, Jaishankar also met the High Commissioner of Bangladesh, Md Mustafizur Rahman on Thursday afternoon.

    The two discussed ways and means to further deepen India-Bangladesh Maitri. The EAM also appreciated the successful organisation of the 6th Indian Ocean Conference in Dhaka.

    Jaishankar tweeted, “Pleased to receive High Commissioner Md. Mustafizur Rahman of Bangladesh this afternoon. Appreciated the successful organization of the 6th Indian Ocean Conference in Dhaka. Discussed ways and means to further deepen India-Bangladesh Maitri.”

    Jaishankar on Thursday also met the US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti and Nepal’s Ambassador to India, Shankar P Sharma to discuss the progress of the relationship between India-US and India-Nepal.

    “Great to welcome Ambassador Eric Garcetti of the United States,” Jaishankar tweeted.

    He also discussed views on Quad, a Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, an alliance between India, US, Japan and Australia.

    “Discussed the enormous progress in our relationship, especially over the last decade. Exchanged views on the recent Quad Summit. Confident that India-US ties will continue to grow from strength to strength,” the EAM’s tweet read further.

    Former Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti was on March 24 (local time) sworn in by US Vice-President Kamala Harris as the new US Ambassador to India.

    The makeshift version of the Quad meeting (which was earlier scheduled to take place in Sydney) happened in Japan’s Hiroshima recently.

    During the meeting, PM Modi, along with US President, Joe Biden; Prime Minister of Japa, Fumio Kishida and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese shared a collective vision of a free, open Indo-Pacific amid China’s growing assertiveness in the region.

    Furthermore, the EAM also met with Nepal’s Ambassador to India, Shankar P Sharma on Thursday.

    Taking to Twitter, Jaishankar wrote, “Glad to receive Ambassador @DrShankarSharma

    of Nepal this morning. Discussed our deep and multifaceted partnership. Committed to its further enhancement in the coming days.”
