Sudan’s Warring Rivals Resume Peace Talks in Jeddah

The Jeddah peace talks were suspended in July over fundamental differences between the warring parties…reports Asian Lite News

Amid continued violence in Sudan, warring rivals — the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) — announced that their delegations had arrived in Saudi Arabia’s port city of Jeddah to resume a fresh round of peace talks.

Since April 15, the SAF and the RSF have engaged in deadly clashes in capital Khartoum and other areas, resulting in at least 3,000 deaths and more than 6,000 injuries, Xinhua news agency.

The Jeddah peace talks were suspended in July over fundamental differences between the warring parties.

But a statement on Wednesday, the Armed Forces said: “Based on the SAF’s belief that negotiation is one of the means that may end the war, we accepted the invitation to go to Jeddah to complete what was previously agreed upon, which is the full implementation of the Jeddah Declaration, to facilitate the humanitarian work and the return of our citizens and normal life to the cities where the rebels wreaked havoc looting, burning, random bombing and raping.”

It stressed that the resumption of talks does not mean the cessation of armed confrontations against the RSF.

On its part, the paramilitary force said in a statement on Wednesday that “in response to the invitation of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the US to resume negotiations, our negotiating delegation arrived in Jeddah today”.

“We hope that the other party will show credibility, realism, and the will to reach a solution that will stop the war and end the suffering of our people,” the statement said.

The RSF further expressed willingness to reach a peaceful settlement for the conflict and achieve the aspirations of the people in building the Sudanese state on new foundations and rebuilding one professional national army.

Since May 6, Saudi Arabia and the US have brokered negotiations between the Sudanese warring parties in Jeddah.

Several truces have been reached and breached since then, with the two sides accusing each other of violating them.

According to the UN International Organization for Migration, nearly 5.8 million people have been displaced inside and outside Sudan due to the prolonged conflict.

Ukraine crisis talks conclude in Jeddah

The participants emphasised the importance of benefiting from views and positive suggestions presented during the two-day (August 5-6) meeting, Xinhua news agency reported, citing the Saudi Press Agency…reports Asian Lite News

The talks on the Ukraine crisis have concluded in the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah, where participants have called for continuing international efforts to build a common ground for peace.

The meeting, which excluded Russia, was chaired by Saudi Minister of State and National Security Adviser Musaad bin Mohammed Al-Aiban. It was attended by representatives from more than 40 countries and international organisations, including the US, India, the EU, China and the United Nations.

The participants emphasised the importance of benefiting from views and positive suggestions presented during the two-day (August 5-6) meeting, Xinhua news agency reported, citing the Saudi Press Agency.

Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelensky, said that he hoped the initiative would lead to a “peace summit” of world leaders this autumn to endorse the principles, based on his own 10-point formula for a settlement, The Guardian reported.

Jeddah talks: Ukraine, allies push peace plan

The meeting, which is set to take place on August 5 and 6, will see the participation of national security advisers and other high-ranking officials from about 40 nations….reports Asian Lite News

Ukraine and its allies have come together to garner worldwide backing for a peace proposal. This blueprint will be the focal point of discussions scheduled to take place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, over this weekend.

The meeting, which is set to take place on August 5 and 6, will see the participation of national security advisers and other high-ranking officials from about 40 nations. The primary goal of this gathering is to reach a consensus on crucial principles aimed at putting an end to Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine.

The Ukrainian President’s office has unveiled a three-step strategy to implement Ukraine’s Peace Formula.

The first stage includes meetings between Ukrainian authorities and ambassadors accredited to Ukraine, aimed at discussing the Peace Formula in detail, Andriy Yermak, head of the president’s office, said on Wednesday in a Telegram post.

At the second stage, Kiev will hold talks with foreign national security advisers and political advisers to find mechanisms for the implementation of the peace plan, Yermak added.

According to Yermak, a global summit with the participation of world leaders to implement measures aimed at ending the conflict in Ukraine would become the final stage of the peace strategy, Xinhua news agency reported.

The first international meeting to discuss Ukraine’s Peace Formula was held in Denmark in June, and the next meeting will be held in Saudi Arabia, Yermak said.

National security advisers and political advisers from countries in the West, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America will take part in the meeting, he noted.

According to Igor Zhovkva, the deputy head of the Ukrainian President’s office, representatives of more than 30 countries will participate in the meeting in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on August 5-6.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky put forward a 10-point formula designed to achieve peace in Ukraine in November 2022.

Currently, direct peace talks between Ukraine and Russia seem unlikely, given the ongoing intensity of the war, and Kyiv’s focus on a counter-offensive to regain lost territories.

However, Ukraine is adopting a different approach to pursue its vision of peace. Rather than engaging in direct talks, Ukraine is concentrating on building a larger coalition of diplomatic support beyond its core group of Western backers.

To achieve this, Ukraine aims to involve Global South countries like India, Brazil, South Africa, and Turkey in the peace-building process. By including nations from the Global South, Ukraine seeks to strengthen its diplomatic standing and garner more widespread support for its peace proposal.

This broader coalition of allies is expected to bolster Ukraine’s position and increase its leverage in seeking a resolution to the conflict with Russia.

India confirms participation

India will participate in the Ukraine peace talks to be hosted by Saudi Arabia on August 5-6, 2023, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.

Saudi Arabia has invited several Western nations, Ukraine and some major developing countries to discuss the peace plan proposed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky earlier this year. The plan is said to include the restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity and the withdrawal of Russian troops in addition to the release of all prisoners.

Russia has not been invited for the talks but it has said it will follow the discussions.

“India will participate in this event. Our participation is in consonance with our long-standing position that dialogue and diplomacy is the way forward,” MEA Official Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said India response to a question at his weekly media briefing.

Bagchi, however, did not say who would represent the country at the summit. “We will let you know when I am in a position to do so,” he said.

Meeting Ukrainian President Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Hiroshima on May 20, 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had conveyed India’s clear support for dialogue and diplomacy to find a way forward.

He said that for a resolution of the situation, India and he personally would do everything within their means, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said after the meeting.

India has also reiterated its support for the UN’s efforts in continuing the Black Sea Grain Initiative and expressed hope for an early resolution to the present impasse.

On Monday (July 17, 2023), Russia said it was terminating the implementation of the UN-brokered deal that allowed food exports from Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict with Russia through a shipping corridor in the Black Sea.

Evacuees brought to Jeddah after a ‘daring’ rescue

Calling it a daring and complex rescue, MoS MEA informed that evacuees of this batch were located in the vicinity of the Sudanese Capital Khartoum, from where the violence was erupted…reports Asian Lite News

Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan received the eighth batch of 121 Indians at the Jeddah airport evacuated from the conflict-hit Sudan. This batch also included the family members of the Indian Embassy officials, MoS wrote on Twitter.

“A daring rescue! 8th batch of 121 Indians arrived at Jeddah by IAF C 130 J from Wadi Seidna, Sudan. This evacuation was more complex as the location is in vicinity of Khartoum. Family members of our Embassy Officials were also part of this group. Warm welcome. #OperationKaveri,” Muraleedharan tweeted.

Calling it a daring and complex rescue, Muraleedharan informed that evacuees of this batch were located in the vicinity of the Sudanese Capital Khartoum, from where the violence between the Sudanese Armed Forces and Rapid Support Forces erupted.

Earlier, on Thursday, Union Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan received rescued Indians from Port Sudan at Jeddah under ‘Operation Kaveri’.

A total of 135 passengers were onboard the IAF C-130J aircraft that landed in Jeddah from Port Sudan.”Delighted to receive 7th batch of stranded Indians at Jeddah from Port Sudan, 135 passengers onboard IAF C-130J aircraft,” MoS Muraleedharan tweeted.

Informing of the evacuation of the stranded Indian nationals from Port Sudan, MEA Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi tweeted on Thursday saying the Indians left for Jeddah on a flight.

“7th batch of stranded Indians departs from Port Sudan. 135 passengers onboard IAF C-130J flight leave for Jeddah under #OperationKaveri,” Bagchi tweeted.

10th batch en route

IAF C-130J flight on Friday evacuated the 10th batch of 135 Indian passengers from Port Sudan to Jeddah after the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) agreed to extend their ceasefire amid ongoing violence in the capital Khartoum and the western Darfur region.

“#OperationKaveri progresses further. 10th batch of evacuees with 135 passengers onboard IAF C-130J flight departs Port Sudan for Jeddah,” tweeted the spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, Arindam Bagchi. This comes after the army said it would extend the ceasefire “for an additional 72 hours” following mediation efforts by Saudi Arabia and the United States in the final hours of the repeatedly broken three-day truce, due to end at midnight (22:00 GMT) on Thursday.

The RSF also said it approved the extended truce, adding that the proposal came from two diplomatic groupings that include the US, Saudi Arabia, Norway, the United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates.

On Thursday, warplanes patrolled over the capital’s northern suburbs as fighters on the ground exchanged artillery and heavy machine-gun fire.

The previous ceasefire has not stopped the fighting but created enough of a lull for tens of thousands of Sudanese, as well as, foreign nationals to leave to safer areas and for foreign nations to evacuate hundreds of their citizens by land and sea.

Sudan is experiencing bloodshed as a result of clashes between the army and paramilitary forces. Even though there is a 72-hour ceasefire, there have been allegations of violence.

Fighting has erupted between soldiers loyal to Sudanese army leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his deputy, paramilitary Rapid Support Soldiers (RSF) commander Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.

One audience member, Ghazal Mazen, 16, said that she grew up listening to Korean songs because of her older sisters, and has been a fan of Ateez since early 2020…reports Asian Lite News

Jeddah Season set a new attendance record over its 60 days of events this year. Organizers said 6 million people had visited the season — the highest number in its short history.

Jeddah Season began in May and ended on Saturday, July 2. The number of visitors it attracted suggests the Kingdom’s drive to boost its tourism and entertainment sectors is a success.

The season created numerous opportunities for partnerships with the private sector, as well as a wide range of employment opportunities for young Saudi men and women in stores, restaurants, cafés, markets, or other organizational or logistical services.

More than 80 percent of all employees involved in Jeddah Season were Saudis.

Saranghae KSA festival unites K-pop fans

Saudi Arabia’s first K-pop festival, Saranghae KSA 22, brought fans from a wide range of backgrounds together under the roof of the Jeddah Superdome for a three-day celebration of Korean music and culture.

K-pop installations, an Umbrella Boulevard and a Cherry Blossoms Avenue provided picture-perfect backgrounds for fans, who were also given a taste of Korean cuisine at stalls selling a range of Korean favorites.

One audience member, Ghazal Mazen, 16, said that she grew up listening to Korean songs because of her older sisters, and has been a fan of Ateez since early 2020.

“I really can’t describe how I feel now. It feels like a dream I have been waiting to live in real life,” she said.

High-quality screens ensured fans were able to see their favorite performers, while a screen suspended from the middle of the dome displayed images taken by audience members at the photo booth, as well as short clips of the bands.

The Consulate General of Korea in Jeddah delievered a one-of-kind Korean experience, offering to photograph fans wearing traditional Korean outfits, as well as providing cooking demonstrations.

Performing on the festival’s opening day, EPEX and Ateez greeted the audience in Arabic and Korean.

Both bands took a break to meet the audience and answer questions from fans.
