Kim receives drones as gifts from Russia

Kim said the Russian military and its people will inherit the “shining tradition of victory” and demonstrate their reputation on the front line of the “military operation”…reports Asian Lite News

As North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un concluded his visit to Russia on Sunday, the standout moment of his trip was when he received five explosive drones, a reconnaissance drone and a bulletproof vest as gifts from a regional governor on his Moscow visit, according to Al Jazeera.

In Vladivostok on Saturday, he met with the Russian Defence minister and viewed cutting-edge armaments, including a hypersonic missile system.

Citing Russian state news agency, TASS, Al Jazeera reported that the “leader of the DPRK received five kamikaze drones and a ‘Geran-25’ reconnaissance drone with vertical takeoff.”

The governor of the Primorye area, which shares a border with China and North Korea, was reportedly said to have “offered Kim Jong Un a set of bulletproof protection” and “special clothing not detectable by thermal cameras.”

According to state-run media in Russia, Kim left the Russian Far East on Sunday by boarding an armoured train in the city of Artyom, which lies north of the port of Vladivostok, and beginning the protracted journey home.

Kim was seen leaving in a video to the Russian and North Korean anthems, according to Al Jazeera. Notably, Kim spent six days in Russia and held headline-grabbing talks with President Vladimir Putin at the Vostochny spaceport.

Notably, the North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un arrived in Russia on Tuesday for a closely watched summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Kim Jong Un’s visit to Russia marks his first foreign trip since the COVID-19 pandemic as during the pandemic, North Korea’s borders were sealed.

Issuing support to Moscow in the ongoing war in Ukraine, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un told President Vladimir Putin that Russia will emerge victorious in the fight to “punish the evil forces”, adding that he would “always be standing with Russia”, according to CNN.

He praised Russia for having “stood up against the hegemonic forces” to defend its sovereignty and security – a veiled reference to the US and the West – and said he has expressed “the full and unconditional support to all that Russia does in response.”

Kim said the Russian military and its people will inherit the “shining tradition of victory” and demonstrate their reputation on the front line of the “military operation”.

North Korea’s Kim was in Russia’s Far East as Putin seeks to strengthen ties in the midst of Russia’s protracted conflict in Ukraine, in addition to advancing his nation’s military modernisation.

Following their first face-to-face summit in four years, Russian President Vladimir Putin accepted an invitation from Kim Jong Un to visit North Korea, according to Al Jazeera.

After more than four hours of discussions and a visit to the Vostochny Cosmodrome space centre, he extended the offer to Putin at “a convenient time” at a reception to mark the end of the day.

“Putin accepted the invitation with pleasure and reaffirmed his will to invariably carry forward the history and tradition of the Russia-DPRK friendship,” Al Jazeera reported North Korean state news agency KCNA as saying on Thursday. (ANI)

Kim Departs Russia After Six-Day Visit

Kim and Shoigu met in Vladivostok and talked about strengthening bilateral military cooperation and exchanges, according to the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA)…reports Asian Lite News

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un left Russia on his armoured train Sunday to return home following a six-day visit to the country, Russian media said.

The train carrying Kim departed the railway station in Russia’s Far Eastern city of Artyom as Russian officials saw him off, RIA Novosti news agency said. Kim also waved and gave a salute to the Russian officials, Yonhap news agency reported.

The North Korean leader visited Russia at the invitation of President Vladimir Putin. On Wednesday, the two held a summit at the Vostochny space center amid growing concern about possible military cooperation between the two countries.

Earlier on Sunday, North Korean state media reported on Kim’s talks with Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu the previous day.

Kim and Shoigu met in Vladivostok and talked about strengthening bilateral military cooperation and exchanges, according to the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

They “exchanged their constructive opinions on the practical issues arising in further strengthening the strategic and tactical coordination, cooperation and mutual exchange between the armed forces of the two countries and in the fields of their national defence and security”, the KCNA said.

Earlier on Saturday, Kim also visited the Knevichi Airbase, where he inspected strategic bombers, multi-role fighter jets and other warplanes, as well as Russia’s Pacific Sea Fleet to board the Marshal Shaposhnikov frigate, it said.

Kim Visits Aircraft Plant During Russia Trip

Russia’s state-run news agency Tass said the Yuri Gagarin plant produces advanced warplanes, including Su-35 and Su-57 fighter jets…reports Asian Lite News

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un headed straight to an aircraft plant that builds fighter jets after arriving in Russia’s Far Eastern city of Komsomolsk-on-Amur on Friday, following his rare summit with President Vladimir Putin earlier this week, according to media reports.

Kim arrived at a railway station in the city earlier in the day and was welcomed in accordance with traditions for a special guest, Yonhap News Agency quoted local Russian media outlets as saying.

The Russian city has two aircraft plants, the Yuri Gagarin Komsomolsk-on-Amur Aircraft Plant, which is named after the first person in space, and the Yakovlev plant, which had been known as Irkut.

Russia’s state-run news agency Tass said the Yuri Gagarin plant produces advanced warplanes, including Su-35 and Su-57 fighter jets.

The Yakovlev plant builds short-haul passenger airliners.

Kim is expected to visit more cities in Russia after Wednesday’s summit at the Vostochny spaceport has raised concerns over the expansion of military cooperation between the increasingly isolated countries, including the prospects of Pyongyang sending more ammunition to Moscow for use in the war in Ukraine.

Putin earlier said Kim will also travel to Vladivostok to view Russia’s Pacific Fleet.

Kim, Putin meet in Russia

Discussions between Kim and Putin at the summit will focus primarily on bilateral cooperation, including trade and economic ties and cultural exchanges…reports Asian Lite News

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and Russian President Vladimir Putin met at the Vostochny spaceport on Wednesday in the Far Eastern Amur Region ahead of their expected summit later in the day, according to media reports.

Russia’s state-run TASS News Agency said that while Putin flew to Vostochny from the Primorye Region where he participated in the Eastern Economic Forum, Kim arrived on a train to the spaceport’s rail station.

The two leaders then greeted each other

According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, discussions between Kim and Putin at the summit will focus primarily on bilateral cooperation, including trade and economic ties and cultural exchanges.

They will also engage in a comprehensive exchange of opinions about the situation in the region and the international affairs in general, TASS quoted Peskov as saying.

In a video posted on the Kremlin’s official Telegram handle, Kim and Putin are seen shaking hands, after which the North Korean leader says: “Thank you for inviting us during your busy schedule,” the BBC reported.

Kim also thanked the President for inviting him to Russia.

On his part, Putin told Kim. “I am glad to see you…This is our new cosmodrome” as he introduced to the Vostochny space centre launched in 2016.

In a report, Russian TV said that Putin showed Kim around the facilities at the spaceport .

PrimaMedia reported that the North Korean leader will be shown how the Angara launch vehicle is being assembled.

He and Putin will also inspect the launch complex for the Soyuz-2 launch vehicle, after which they will hold negotiations, the BBC reported.

In reponse to questions from reporters if Russia will help North Korea build satellites, Putin said: “This is why we’ve come to Vostochny Cosmodrome.”

Analysts have predicted that North Korea may agree to supply Russia with ammunition and weaponry for its war in Ukraine, reports Yonhap News Agency.

Moscow, in return, may agree on a weapons-related technology transfer to Pyongyang, such as those involving spy satellites and nuclear-powered submarines.

If Kim and Putin also agree to strengthen their military cooperation, including a three-way naval drill with China, it would pose a major security challenge on the Korean Peninsula and beyond.

Kim, Putin Expected to Strengthen Military Cooperation

North Korea’s official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) also confirmed that Kim arrived in the Russian border city of Khasan on Tuesday morning and left for his “destination” without specifying details…reports Asian Lite News

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un said that his trip to Russia for an expected meeting with his counterpart Vladimir Putin is a “clear manifestation” of the North prioritizing the strategic importance of their bilateral ties, Pyongyang’s state media said Wednesday.

Kim’s remarks came as the leaders are expected to meet for their first summit in four years in Russia to discuss a possible arms deal as they seek to strengthen military cooperation, Yonhap news agency reported.

North Korea’s official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) also confirmed that Kim arrived in the Russian border city of Khasan on Tuesday morning and left for his “destination” without specifying details.

It remains unknown exactly when and where Kim and Putin would hold a meeting, though some foreign media reports said the summit would likely take place Wednesday at the Vostochny Cosmodrome spaceport in Amur Oblast.

US warns Kim, Putin on arms deal

It is possible the pair will meet on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, the Far East city closest to the North Korea-Russia border…reports Asian Lite News

North Korea’s Kim Jong Un was in Russia on a rare overseas visit Tuesday ahead of a meeting with President Vladimir Putin, sparking warnings from Washington over a possible arms deal for Moscow’s war in Ukraine.

Wearing a black suit and flanked by uniformed defense officials, North Korean state media images showed an unsmiling Kim waving from the doorway of his heavily-armored private train with green-and-gold livery as it departed Pyongyang station Sunday evening.

Russian state news agency Ria Novosti confirmed Kim’s train had crossed the border into the Primorsky region, with images showing a train with dark green carriages being pulled along a track by a Russian Railways locomotive.

Kim will meet Putin in the Far East later this week, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said according to Ria Novosti.

It is possible the pair will meet on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, the Far East city closest to the North Korea-Russia border. The forum runs until Wednesday.

Experts say Moscow will likely seek artillery shells and antitank missiles from North Korea, which wants advanced satellite and nuclear-powered submarine technology in return.

Accompanied by top North Korean military officials, including officials in charge of weapons production and space technology, Kim “left here by his train on Sunday afternoon to visit the Russian Federation,” the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA)

KCNA images showed Kim’s being given a “warm send-off” complete with red carpet and honor guard at Pyongyang station at around 18h38 (0938 GMT).

Kim has been steadfast in his support for Moscow’s Ukraine invasion, including, Washington says, supplying rockets and missiles. In July, Putin hailed Pyongyang’s “firm support for special military operations against Ukraine.”

But both Moscow and Pyongyang have denied North Korea has or will supply arms to Russia, which has eaten into its vast stockpiles of munitions fighting since it invaded Ukraine early last year.

Kim has not traveled outside the North since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. His last proper overseas trip was in 2019, also to Russia to meet Putin.

Moscow, a historical ally of Pyongyang, was a crucial backer of the isolated country for decades and their ties go back to the founding of North Korea 75 years ago.

“Given his interest in exploiting ‘new Cold War’ geopolitics and a preference for traveling by train for personal security, it is unsurprising Kim chose Russia as his first post-pandemic destination,” said Leif-Eric Easley, a professor at Ewha University in Seoul.

“North Korea has the crude ammunition that Putin needs for his illegal war in Ukraine, while Moscow has submarine, ballistic, and satellite technologies that could help Pyongyang leapfrog engineering challenges it suffers under economic sanctions,” he said.

Even if an arms deal does result from the Putin-Kim summit, it is unlikely either side will make public the full details due to the “serious international legal violations involved,” he added.

The White House recently warned that Pyongyang would “pay a price” if it supplies Moscow with weaponry for its war in Ukraine.

On Monday the United States described Putin as desperate in seeking a meeting with Kim.

“Having to travel across the length of his own country to meet with an international pariah to ask for assistance in a war that he expected to win in the opening month, I would characterise it as him begging for assistance,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters.

Washington has said Russia could use weapons from North Korea to attack Ukrainian food supplies and heating infrastructure heading into winter to “try to conquer territory that belongs to another sovereign nation.”

Andrei Lankov, a North Korea expert at Kookmin University in Seoul, told AFP that a Putin-Kim summit was part of Moscow’s “gentle diplomatic blackmail” of Seoul because Russia did not want South Korea to supply weapons to Kyiv.

Seoul is a major arms exporter and has sold tanks to Kyiv’s ally Poland, but longstanding domestic policy bars it from selling weapons into active conflicts.

“The major worry of the Russian government now is a possible shipment of the South Korean ammunition to Ukraine, not just one shipment but a lot of shipments,” Lankov said.

South Korean Intelligence Monitors Kim-Putin Summit Plans

The New York Times report said a delegation of some 20 North Korean officials traveled to Vladivostok in late August…reports Asian Lite News

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un may opt for an unexpected route when he travels to Russia for a meeting with President Vladimir Putin, according to South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS).

Earlier this week, The New York Times had reported that Kim plans to travel to Vladivostok, possibly by an armoured train, later this month for talks with Putin about the possibility of supplying Russia with more weaponry for its ongoing war in Ukraine and other military cooperation.

“As it was revealed to the New York Times, there is a possibility of Kim Jong-un making a surprise move by choosing a different route than what is expected,” Yonhap News Agency quoted an NIS official as saying during a parliamentary intelligence committee meeting on Thursday.

During the meeting, NIS Director Kim Kyou-hyun said the agency is closely monitoring the planned visit and sharing intelligence with other national spy agencies as a summit between the North and Russia would have a big effect on the international situation.

The New York Times report said a delegation of some 20 North Korean officials traveled to Vladivostok in late August.

“One potential stop for Mr. Kim after Vladivostok, an official said, is Vostochny Cosmodrome, a space launch centre,” said the report, noting North Korea may be seeking to secure advanced technology for satellites and nuclear-powered submarines from Russia in exchange of its weapons.
