Liverpool Tops Premier League Table with Salah’s 150th Goal

At half-time both managers made changes as Liverpool replaced Endo with Joe Gomez and Palace replaced Edouard with Jean-Philippe Mateta…reports Asian Lite News

Mohammad Salah’s 150th Premier League goal and substitute Harvey Elliott’s stoppage-time strike earn Liverpool a 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace, climbing to the top of the table.

It was the fifth time Liverpool had come from behind to win this season, extending their unbeaten record against Palace to 13 Premier League games.

The first half was a cagey affair on Saturday. Liverpool struggled to break down a resolute Palace team, whose 53 passes completed was their joint-lowest such total for an opening half in 20 years, Premier League reports.

The only shot on target came from Palace in the 27th minute. Jordan Ayew drove down the right and whipped in a cross that found Jefferson Lerma at the back post, but the midfielder’s shot was brilliantly saved by Alisson before the ball hit the post and was cleared.

Two minutes later, Palace were awarded a penalty after Wataru Endo was robbed of the ball and Virgil van Dijk brought down Odsonne Edouard who was through on goal. But the spot-kick was overturned after a VAR review found that Hughes had fouled Endo in the build-up.

At half-time both managers made changes as Liverpool replaced Endo with Joe Gomez and Palace replaced Edouard with Jean-Philippe Mateta.

Mateta got straight into the action, winning a penalty after being fouled by Jarell Quansah, who was making only his second start. The decision to award the spot-kick came after a VAR review one minute 45 seconds after the foul. He then stepped up and sent Alisson the wrong way to give Palace the lead on 57 minutes. In the 74th minute, Ayew was sent off for a second yellow after fouling Elliott on the counter-attack.

Liverpool equalised 98 seconds later. Cody Gakpo’s cross led to a scramble in the box and the ball fell kindly to Salah, who scored with a deflected shot. It was his 200th goal in a Liverpool shirt and his 150th in the Premier League, entering him into the top 10 goalscorers list, alongside Michael Owen.

Ten seconds into 10 minutes of added time Elliott gave the Reds the lead. Salah laid off the ball to the substitute who drove forward and released a powerful shot beating substitute ‘keeper Remi Matthews.

Palace applied some late pressure but were unable to stop Liverpool increasing their points won from losing positions to 18, sending them top with 37 points. Palace remain 14th on 16 points.

Liverpool Honours Veteran NRI Doctor

Dr Pande was awarded an MBE in 1989 for his services to medicine, and appointed as Deputy Lieutenant of Merseyside in 2002…reports Asian Lite News

Britain’s most famous port city Liverpool honour Dr Shiv Pande, a veteran doctor from Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India.  Dr Shiv Pande MBE, who has lived in the city for five decades, started his career as a surgeon at Broadgreen Hospital before going on to serve some of Liverpool’s most disadvantaged communities as a GP for 30 years.

Lord Mayor of Liverpool presented “Citizen of Honour” at a special ceremony organised at Liverpool townhall.

Dr Pande became the first minority ethnic treasurer to be elected to the General Medical Council, and also set up the Professional and Linguistics Assessments Board examination in 1996 in India, which supported the NHS to have junior doctors from different countries around the globe. On Granada TV, he presented the Asian version of consumer rights programme ‘This Is Your Right’ for 14 years, advising newly arrived Indian, Pakistani, and Bangladeshi communities.

Dr Pande has also been involved in extensive charity work which has benefited people across the world, including raising funds for orphans of the Indian gas tragedy in Bhopal and the earthquake in Latur.

Closer to home, he organised cricket matches in memory of Anthony Walker, who was murdered in a racist attack, as well as cricket coaching for unemployed young people by members of the 1983 World Cup winning Indian team. In 1982, he established the Liverpool Faith Network, and also served for 24 years as a magistrate. He is a visiting professor at University of Bolton and Gauhati University, Assam and an Honorary Fellow at the University of Central Lancashire.

Dr Pande was awarded an MBE in 1989 for his services to medicine, and appointed as Deputy Lieutenant of Merseyside in 2002.

Citizen of Honour is a civic award conferred on individuals who have made significant, exceptional or unique contributions to enrich the image of Liverpool and/or its citizens.

“Dr Pande’s kindness and compassion have stretched far beyond his professional life as a surgeon and GP, with a focus on always helping the most vulnerable,” said Cllr Roy Gladden, Lord Mayor of Liverpool. “Many of his patients speak fondly of how he was their doctor from childhood to adulthood, always much-loved by the community. He has consistently and selflessly served the people of this city and I’m delighted to be able to be able to confer Citizen of Honour upon him in recognition of his work.

“I am honoured to be made a ‘Citizen of Honour’ by the City of Liverpool, which has been my home for nearly half a century,” said Dr Pande.  “It is deeply gratifying to be recognised for my work and I thank Liverpool for selecting me.”

Iga Swiatek steers Poland into Billie Jean King Cup finals

On Saturday, Olympic silver medalist Marketa Vondrousova started the Czechs off with a sturdy 6-1, 6-1 win over reigning US Open champion Emma Raducanu…reports Asian Lite News

World No 1 Iga Swiatek won her 19th straight match and led Poland to the finals of the 2022 Billie Jean King Cup, here on Saturday.

The 20-year old Swiatek gave Poland an insurmountable 3-0 lead in their qualifying tie against Romania with a flawless 6-0, 6-0 victory over Andreea Prisacariu. She converted all six of her break points en route to the 52-minute win.

By adding yet another triumph to her career-best winning streak, the top-ranked Swiatek gained Poland’s required third match-win of the week, qualifying her country for the November finals. A total of 12 nations will compete for the prestigious crown in the finals.

In another clash, the Czech Republic were pushed to the brink before winning their tie 3-2 over Great Britain. The Czechs will head to the finals as the most recent dominant Billie Jean King Cup team, having won a staggering six of the last ten editions.

On Saturday, Olympic silver medalist Marketa Vondrousova started the Czechs off with a sturdy 6-1, 6-1 win over reigning US Open champion Emma Raducanu.

Raducanu had played and won her first professional clay-court match on Friday, but 2019 Roland Garros finalist Vondrousova was too solid on the dirt for the British teenager on Saturday, prevailing in just over an hour. However, Britain’s Harriet Dart leveled the tie at 2-2 with a 6-0, 5-7, 6-2 win over 16-year-old Linda Fruhvirtova. The Czech teen was down 2-5 in the second set, but saved three match points during a five-game run to steal it.

In the end, though, Dart recovered to collect the third set, lining up a decisive doubles match, an wtatennis.com report said.

In the doubles, Vondrousova and Karolina Muchova teamed up to achieve a 6-1, 7-5 win over Dart and Katie Swan, putting the Czechs through after a nail-biting Saturday. Crafty left-hander Vondrousova finished the week having earned all three of the Czechs’ match-wins.

Kazakhstan also clinched a spot in November’s finals as Elena Rybakina outlasted Germany’s Angelique Kerber 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 in a battle between two of the world’s Top 20 players.

Former World No.1 Kerber broke Rybakina at love for a 5-3 lead in the third set, but Rybakina rebounded with aplomb, winning the next four games consecutively to give Kazakhstan the win and an unbeatable 3-0 lead for the weekend.

Meanwhile, four-time champion Italy also qualified for the finals, after Camila Giorgi gave her squad a 3-0 lead over three-time champion France with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Harmony Tan. Giorgi won 62 percent of points returning the Tan serve to ease to victory.

Five-time champion Spain also romped into the November finals. Sara Sorribes Tormo bested Arantxa Rus 6-0, 6-4, giving the Spaniards the decisive 3-0 advantage over the Netherlands.

Liverpool in finals after beating Manchester City

The second then arrived courtesy of the Reds’ high press that caused their opponents issues from the start…reports Asian Lite News

Liverpool advanced to the final of FA Cup after beating Manchester City 3-2 at Wembley on Saturday.

Ibrahima Konate netted the semi-final’s first goal after nine minutes, as Sadio Mane then struck twice to give Jurgen Klopp’s men a 3-0 advantage at half-time.

Jack Grealish and Bernardo Silva reduced the deficit in the second period, but the Reds held on to secure their spot in the tournament’s showpiece for the first time since 2012. The seven-time winners will now face either Chelsea or Crystal Palace at Wembley on May 14.

Klopp opted to make seven changes for the contest, with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andy Robertson and Virgil van Dijk returning the backline. Thiago Alcantara and Fabinho were in the midfield, as Mohamed Salah and Mane started up top.

Liverpool started well and earned themselves a two-goal lead after just 17 minutes of play. Continuing his potency from corners, Konate outjumped Nathan Ake from Andy Robertson’s delivery and thrashed a powerful header to open the scoring.

The second then arrived courtesy of the Reds’ high press that caused their opponents issues from the start. City goalkeeper Zack Steffen took too long with John Stones’ pass back, inviting Mane to close him down with a sliding challenge that diverted the ball into the back of the net.

It was a similar story for the rest of the half, and the team in charge would add to their lead a minute before the half-time break.

A well-worked Liverpool move ended with a scooped Thiago pass to the right of the penalty area that found Mane, who hit a drilled volley that beat Steffen at his near post.

Neither side made a change at the interval, but the Reds’ advantage would be reduced early into the second period.

Gabriel Jesus turned inside the box, beating Fabinho and squared to the free Grealish. The City No.10 made no mistake with his opportunity in front of goal.

With City searching for a route back into the game, Alisson Becker was called upon twice to deny Jesus in one-v-one situations.

At the other end, Salah pounced on Oleksandr Zinchenko’s underpowered header back to goal, though the Egyptian’s dinked finish was just off target. There was to be a tense finish when Bernardo tapped in at the back post to make it 3-2 just as four minutes of injury time had been allocated.

Alisson had to save from Raheem Sterling, while Roberto Firmino went close to adding a fifth, but the final whistle arrived to confirm Liverpool’s return to Wembley next month.

Liverpool’s ninth League Cup hits record

Liverpool remain in contention for an unprecedented quadruple after closing the gap on Premier League leaders Manchester City to six points with a game in hand…reports Asian Lite News

Liverpool won a record ninth League Cup in dramatic fashion, as Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga missed the decisive penalty to give Liverpool an 11-10 shootout victory in the final.

On Sunday night, the game ended goalless after 120 minutes which saw plenty of chances, some great saves from both keepers and three goals (one for Liverpool and two for Chelsea) ruled out for offside.

It was cruel on Kepa, who was sent on at the end of extra-time to replace Edouard Mendy given his reputation as a penalty-saving specialist, but the Spaniard was unable to repel any of Liverpool’s kicks before missing the decisive penalty himself, Xinhua reports.

Liverpool remain in contention for an unprecedented quadruple after closing the gap on Premier League leaders Manchester City to six points with a game in hand.

They are also on course for the Champions League quarterfinals after a last-16 first-leg win at Inter Milan and are still in the FA Cup.

PM talks tough after Liverpool blast

“The Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre are now increasing the UK’s threat level from substantial to severe,” Patel told local media…reports Asian Lite News.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said that the UK will never give in to those who seek to divide the country as on Sunday the deadly blast took place in a taxi outside a hospital in Liverpool. The British officials are treating the blast as a terror incident. The incident is a stark reminder of the need for all of us to remain utterly vigilant, Johnson said during a press conference here on Monday.

The Prime Minister also said that the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre has raised UK’s threat level from substantial to severe, meaning an attack is highly likely. Expressing his gratitude to the emergency services for reacting to the Liverpool incident, Johnson said: “On behalf of the whole country, I want to pay tribute to the emergency services, who responded as always with such speed and professionalism.”

Earlier on Sunday, authorities arrested three people in connection with the car explosion in Liverpool. A car had exploded near the Women’s Hospital in Liverpool, leaving one man dead and another one injured on Sunday.

Terror threat level raised to ‘severe’

The UK’s terror threat level has been upgraded from “substantial” to “severe” following an explosion outside a Liverpool hospital that had been declared a terrorist incident.

Monday’s upgrade, confirmed by Home Secretary Priti Patel, means further attacks are judged to be “highly likely”.

“The Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre are now increasing the UK’s threat level from substantial to severe,” Patel told local media.

“And there’s a reason for that, and that reason is because what we saw yesterday is the second incident in a month.”

The “severe” level is the second highest alert in the UK, whose five-level terrorism threat alert system consists of “low, moderate, substantial, severe and critical”.

Sunday’s explosion outside Liverpool Women’s Hospital was caused by “the ignition of an explosive device” that was brought into the vehicle by a male passenger, said Russ Jackson, chief of counter-terrorism unit in northwest England.

The male passenger died in the explosion and the taxi driver managed to escape.

The police believe they know the identity of the passenger, but were yet to confirm.

The motivation for the incident remains unclear.

Four men in their 20s have been arrested under the Terrorism Act.

The injured cab driver, who locked the passenger in the car during the incident, has been hailed a hero.

“The taxi driver, in his heroic efforts, has managed to divert what could have been an absolutely awful disaster at the hospital,” said Liverpool Mayor Joanne Anderson.

Police arrest 3 after Liverpool car blast

The man killed in the blast has not yet been identified, the statement said. The injured man, who was driving, was in a stable condition in hospital…reports Asian Lite News.

Police announced the arrests of three men after a car exploded in front of Liverpool Women’s Hospital, killing one man and injuring another on Sunday morning.

The three men, aged 29, 26 and 21, were arrested in Liverpool’s Kensington district under the anti-terrorism laws, Greater Manchester Police said in a tweet.

The man killed in the blast has not yet been identified, the statement said. The injured man, who was driving, was in a stable condition in hospital.

Counter-terrorism police in the region were working closely with the Liverpool force, the statement added.

Chief Constable Serena Kennedy said police were called to reports of a car explosion just before 1100 GMT outside Liverpool Women’s Hospital, just as a Remembrance Day Service was commemorating war dead at the nearby Liverpool Cathedral.

Police said they understood that the car involved was a taxi that pulled up at the hospital shortly before the explosion occurred.

“Work is still ongoing to establish what has happened,” Kennedy told reporters.

“We are keeping an open mind as to what caused the explosion but given how it has happened, out of caution, counter-terrorism police are leading the investigation supported by Merseyside Police.”

Police said the explosion had not been declared a terrorist incident at this stage.
