Gandhi statue vandalised in Australia

Prime Minister Morrison has said he was devastated to hear about the vandalism…reports Asian Lite News

Attempts were made by some unidentified persons to decapitate a life-sized bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi that was unveiled on November 12 by Prime Minister Scott Morrison at the Australian Indian Community Center in the Melbourne suburb of Rowville.

The incident was reported on November 12-13, after which the Victoria police appealed for witnesses or anyone with CCTV or dash cam or anyone with information to contact the investigating authority.

Prime Minister Morrison has said he was devastated to hear about the vandalism, ABC news reported.

“Australia is the most successful multicultural and immigration nation in the world and attacks on cultural monuments will not be tolerated,” Morrison has said.

“It is disgraceful and extremely disappointing to see this level of disrespect. Whoever is responsible for this has shown great disrespect to the Australian Indian community and should be ashamed,” the Prime Minister was quoted as saying.

Jason Wood, the Assistant Minister for Customs, Community Safety and Multicultural Affairs, who was also at the unveiling, has said it was a “disgraceful act”.

“Australia celebrates everyone’s culture and traditions,” he said.

Meanwhile, Surya Prakash Soni, president of the Federation of Indian Associations of Victoria, has termed the vandalism as a “low act”.

“The community is very shocked and sad,” he said.

“Mahatma Gandhi is a symbol of peace and non-violence. He is not only an Indian leader but a global leader.

“I don’t (understand) why anyone would do such a low act of vandalism,” Soni was quoted as saying in a media report.

“An unknown number of offenders have used a power tool to damage the bronze statue on Kingsley Close sometime between 5:30pm on Friday, November 12 and 5:30pm on Saturday, November 13,” the report quoted a Victoria Police spokesperson as saying.

UK issues coin to honour Mahatma on Diwali

Building on the enduring relationship and cultural connections between the UK and India, it is the first time that Gandhi has been commemorated on an official UK coin…reports Asian Lite News

A new 5 pound coin to commemorate the life and legacy of Mahatma Gandhi was unveiled by Chancellor Rishi Sunak to mark the Hindu festival of Diwali.

Available in a range of standards, including gold and silver, the special collectors’ coin was designed by Heena Glover and features an image of a lotus, India’s national flower, alongside one of Gandhi’s most famous quotes — “My life is my message”.

Building on the enduring relationship and cultural connections between the UK and India, it is the first time that Gandhi has been commemorated on an official UK coin with the final design chosen by Sunak, who is the Master of the Mint.

“This coin is a fitting tribute to an influential leader who inspired millions of people around the world,” he said.

“As a practicing Hindu, I am proud to unveil this coin during Diwali. Mahatma Gandhi was instrumental in the movement for Indian independence and it is fantastic to have a UK coin commemorating his remarkable life for the first time.”

The coin, which goes on sale, is part of the Royal Mint’s wider Diwali collection, which includes 1g and 5g gold bars in henna-style packaging, and the UK’s first gold bar depicting Lakshmi — the Hindu Goddess of wealth.

The 20g gold Lakshmi bar was designed in partnership with the Hindu community in South Wales, where the Royal Mint is based.

The Mint will join the celebrations at the Shree Swaminarayan Temple in Cardiff, where worshippers will offer prayers to goddess Lakshmi and lord Ganesha for the coming year.

Chief Customer Officer for The Royal Mint, Nicola Howell, said: “As we approach Diwali celebrations, we are delighted to unveil the first official UK coin commemorating the life and legacy of Mahatma Gandhi. The beautiful design builds on the enduring relationship and cultural connections between the UK and India.”

The announcement comes as India is celebrating its 75th year of Independence this year. Last year, the Chancellor commissioned the new “Diversity Built Britain” 50p coin following discussion with the ‘We Too Built Britain’ campaign, which works for fair representation of minority communities’ contributions across all walks of life.

Around 10 million of the coins, which recognise and celebrate Britain’s diverse history, went into circulation in October 2020.

Blinken Remembers Message of Non-Violence on Gandhi Jayanti

We join our friends in India and around the world to celebrate the 152nd birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, Secretary Antony Blinken said, reports Asian Lite News

On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, US Secretary Antony Blinken on Saturday remembered Mahatma Gandhi and said that his message of non-violence, and tolerance are still relevant today.

“We join our friends in India and around the world to celebrate the 152nd birthday of Mahatma Gandhi. As @POTUS (US President Joe Biden) said, We’re all reminded that his message of non-violence, respect, [and] tolerance matters today, maybe more than it ever has,” Blinken tweeted.

Last month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his US visit had said the Mahatma’s ‘trusteeship’ concept would be important for our planet in times to come. This statement was made after President Joe Biden mentioned Gandhi Jayanti.

“President Joe Biden mentioned Gandhiji’s Jayanti. Mahatma Gandhi always used to talk about trusteeship of the planet, a concept which is important for our planet in times to come,” PM Modi had said during the bilateral talks with Biden at the Oval office.

Born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar town of Gujarat, Mahatma Gandhi or Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi adopted a non-violent resistance and was at the forefront of the freedom struggle against colonial British rule.

Gandhi’s birth anniversary is celebrated as the International Day of Non-Violence. Several events are held in India and across the world to mark the occasion. (ANI)
