Police arrest Egyptian man following migrant boat death

French authorities were alerted that the vessel was in trouble in the early hours of Sunday and the woman was recovered and airlifted to hospital but later died…reports Asian Lite News

The UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) on Tuesday said its officers had arrested a man in connection with a small boat Channel crossing that led to the death Sunday of a woman in France.

The NCA said it had detained a 29-year-old Egyptian national in Manston, southern England, on Monday and questioned him on suspicion of facilitating illegal immigration.

He was then bailed pending further enquiries.

The woman died trying to cross the Channel from France to Britain on an overcrowded boat.

French authorities were alerted that the vessel was in trouble in the early hours of Sunday and the woman was recovered and airlifted to hospital but later died.

The boat continued on its journey to the UK, and arrived into Dover carrying around 40 people.

“This tragedy demonstrates how dangerous these crossings are,” said NCA Branch Commander Mark Howes.

“Working with partners we remain determined to do all we can to target, disrupt and dismantle the criminal networks involved in organised immigration crime,” he added.

It was the seventh migrant death in the Channel since July 12 and the French maritime prefecture said there was a “new phenomenon” of would-be migrants dying from the crushed conditions in boats rather than from drowning.

The asylum applications of migrants entering the UK illegally from countries on its designated safe states list, including India, will be fast-tracked to deport them back speedily under new Labour government proposals.

UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has said she has begun the work to move staff from the previous Conservative-led government’s now-abolished Rwanda scheme to a new Returns and Enforcement programme. In place of the policy of trying to fly out illegal migrants to the African country, the Home Office plans to increase the returns to the countries of origin, starting with an increase in raids on businesses employing illegal workers.

We are drawing up new plans for fast-track decisions and returns for safe countries, Cooper wrote in The Sun on Sunday’.

Most people in this country want to see a properly controlled and managed asylum system, where Britain does its bit to help those fleeing conflict and persecution, but where those who have no right to be in the country are swiftly removed, she said.

India was added to the UK’s Safe States list last November, which would speed up the process of returning Indians who travel from the country illegally, as Home Office figures show asylum seekers from India have a very low acceptance rate.

Migrant boat crossings to UK hits new record

Since the start of January, 105 boats have been detected making the crossing, with an average of more than 47 people on each craft…reports Asian Lite News

Almost 5,000 people have arrived in the UK after crossing the Channel in small boats so far this year, according to government figures.

The Home Office data shows 349 people attempted the journey in seven boats on Saturday, taking the total number of arrivals to 4,993 since the start of 2024 – a record high for this time of year. The previous record over an equivalent period was 4,548 in 2022.

Since the start of January, 105 boats have been detected making the crossing, with an average of more than 47 people on each craft.

Rishi Sunak’s government has pledged to “stop the boats” and it wants to send those who arrive on small boats to Rwanda. The approach has been met with fierce resistance inside and outside parliament, and the House of Lords has repeatedly stymied proposed legislation. The measures be considered once more when MPs return from parliament’s Easter recess on 15 April.

A Home Office spokesperson said: “The unacceptable number of people who continue to cross the Channel demonstrates exactly why we must get flights to Rwanda off the ground as soon as possible. We continue to work closely with French police, who are facing increasing violence and disruption on their beaches as they work tirelessly to prevent these dangerous, illegal and unnecessary journeys. We remain committed to building on the successes that saw arrivals drop by more than a third last year, including tougher legislation and agreements with international partners, in order to save lives and stop the boats.”

The shadow immigration minister, Stephen Kinnock, said: “A year which started with Rishi Sunak and James Cleverly boasting about the success of their small boats strategy is now setting one unwanted record after another for the number of arrivals. Their complacency has been laid bare and their pledge to stop the boats has been left in tatters. We can also see from these figures that there is a major tragedy waiting to happen in the Channel. Poor-quality, overcrowded dinghies are putting to sea and getting into trouble early in their journeys, while the smuggling gangs responsible are left to count their profits.”

EU President pledges action to help Italian island amid surging migrants

The Italian Coast Guard found the baby, saying that it was born during the journey and was found during a rescue operation…reports Asian Lite News

Amid the rising number of migrants in Lampedusa, EU President Ursula von der Leyen pledged action to help Italy’s crisis-hit island during her visit on Sunday, CNN reported.

Von der Leyen visited a migrant reception centre on the island after the Italian Prime Minister urged the European leader to extend help to the island.

The EU president’s visit came after Mayor Filippo Mannino warned on Thursday about Lampedusa’s migrant crisis saying that it had reached a “point of no return”.

At least 130,000 migrants have arrived on the shores of Italy this year, which is almost double as compared to the previous year, CNN reported.

Addressing a press conference along with Italian PM Georgia Meloni, Von Der Leyen said, “We will decide who comes to the European Union and under what circumstances, and not the smugglers and traffickers.”

Meanwhile, Meloni and the EU Chief met on Sunday to “offer a coordinated response by the Italian and European authorities” Von Der Leyen informed.

“We have an obligation as part of the international community. We have fulfilled it in the past and we will do so today and in the future,” she added.

The EU president stressed that migration is a European challenge.

“Migration is a European challenge and it needs a European answer and solution,” she said.

Meloni said the “problem” of migrants crossing the Mediterranean to Europe cannot be solved by redistributing migrants within European borders but rather requires tackling the problem externally and preventing the departure of migrants, according to CNN.

Von Der Leyen promoted legal pathways and humanitarian corridors as measures to counter “smugglers’ lies.”

“We will offer migrants real alternatives through this humanitarian admission. This is very important to break the vicious narrative of the smugglers,” she added.

Earlier, on Saturday, a newborn baby was found dead on a boat carrying people to Lampedusa even as dozens of the island’s citizens protested over a surge in arrivals, Al Jazeera reported citing ANSA news agency.

The Italian Coast Guard found the baby, saying that it was born during the journey and was found during a rescue operation.

According to Al Jazeera, Lampedusa has seen thousands of landings this week alone, more than the island’s permanent population. The situation has further triggered appeals for help from local politicians.

The recent surge in arrivals has reignited the debate over how Europe shares responsibility for asylum seekers. (ANI)

UK govt partners with tech firms to curb migrant arrivals

Main opposition Labour party’s spokeswoman says the action was “too little, too late”, accusing the government of having “no idea how to fix the mess they created”…reports Asian Lite News

The British government has announced a new partnership between law enforcement and social media companies to crack down on online content encouraging migrants to arrive in the UK illegally using small boats.

The Conservative government, struggling in the polls a year before the general election, has promised to end dangerous cross-Channel journeys from northern France in small boats but experienced a number of setbacks in delivering its plans.

Plans to controversially send illegal migrants to Rwanda have become bogged down in the courts, while the housing of asylum seekers on a barge in southern England to reduce accommodation costs has experienced several delays.

The announced partnership between Britain’s National Crime Agency and companies including Meta, TikTok and X (former Twitter) will target content linked to people smuggling, such as offers of false documents, group discounts, free spaces for children and false claims of safe passage, Downing Street said.

“To stop the boats, we have to tackle the business model of vile people smugglers at source,” UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said.

“That means clamping down on their attempts to lure people into making these illegal crossings and profit from putting lives at risk. This new commitment from tech firms will see us redouble our efforts to fight back against these criminals, working together to shut down their vile trade,” he added.

But the main opposition Labour party’s home affairs spokeswoman, Yvette Cooper, said the action was “too little, too late”, accusing the government of having “no idea how to fix the mess they created”.

Immigration — both legal and illegal — has long been a key political issue in Britain and was one of the main battlegrounds of the Brexit referendum in 2016, which saw the country leave the European Union.

More than 45,000 migrants arrived on the shores of southeast England on small boats in 2022 — a 60-percent annual increase — on a perilous route that has been used by more people every year since 2018.

Sunak’s government last month passed a controversial law, criticised by the United Nations, barring asylum claims by anyone arriving via the Channel and other “illegal” routes.

Home Secretary Suella Braverman said, “Heartless people smugglers are using social media to promote their despicable services and charge people thousands of pounds to make the illegal journey into the UK in unsafe boats. They must not succeed. This strengthened collaboration between the National Crime Agency, government and social media companies will ensure content promoting dangerous and illegal Channel crossings doesn’t see the light of day.”

The partnership will build on the close working already in place between government and social media companies, and includes a range of commitments to explore increased collaboration.

Under this initiative, social media companies will look to increase cooperation with the National Crime Agency to find and remove criminal content and step up the sharing of best practice both across the industry and with law enforcement.

The voluntary partnership also includes a commitment to explore ways to step up efforts to redirect people away from this content when they come across it online. This approach is already widely being used successfully by platforms, for example around harmful content promoting extremism or eating disorders, where people are presented with alternative messages to displace, rebut or undermine the damaging content they searched for – diverting them away from harmful messaging and misinformation.

Alongside the partnership, the government will also set up a new centre led by the National Crime Agency and Home Office to increase the capacity and capability of law enforcement to identify this content on social media platforms.

Known as the ‘Online Capability Centre’, backed by £11m funding, its work will focus on undermining and disrupting the business model of organised crime groups responsible for illegal crossings and using the internet to facilitate these journeys by intensifying efforts to combat their online activity.

The centre will be staffed by highly trained technical specialists alongside law enforcement officers and will work by building a clearer picture of the scale of illegal immigration material online. They will work with internet companies to identify more of this material, notifying platforms so they can take the appropriate action. The centre will also focus on developing and building a bank of intelligence around the criminal networks who are promoting people smuggling services online, which will help improve law enforcement’s ability to identify content and in turn help drive investigations.

To harness the potential of new technology such as AI to clamp down on criminals’ content, government will also hold a ‘hackathon’ event with industry experts in order to develop innovative new tools which will better detect people smugglers’ publicly available content online, to help social media companies take it down more quickly.

Government will also intensify the existing work taking place with social media companies ahead of the Online Safety Bill coming into effect.

Once in force, under the Bill social media companies will be required to make sure their systems and processes are designed to prevent people coming into contact with illegal content created by people smugglers, minimise how long this content is available online and remove it as soon as possible once they become aware of it.
