BJP fields Nadda, Chavan for RS polls

On Sunday, the BJP named 14 candidates for the Rajya Sabha polls, including former Union Minister R P N Singh and party spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi…reports Asian Lite News

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday fielded its national president JP Nadda for Rajya Sabha elections from Gujarat and former Congress leader Ashok Chavan from Maharashtra.

The BJP’s latest list of candidates for the biennial Rajya Sabha polls has seven nominees; four for Gujarat and three for Maharashtra.

The other three BJP candidates from Gujarat are Govindbhai Dholakia, Mayankbhai Nayak and Dr Jashvantsinh Parmar.

Medha Kulkarni and Dr Ajit Gopchhade have been named as party candidates from Maharashtra.

Meanwhile, Nadda, who is currently a Rajya Sabha member from Himachal Pradesh, is being fielded from Gujarat since the BJP does not have the numbers to win the lone seat in the Congress-ruled hill state.

Ashok Chavan joined the BJP on Tuesday, a day after quitting the Congress in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

Earlier today, the BJP announced that it’s nominating Union ministers Ashwini Vaishnaw from Odisha and L Murugan from Madhya Pradesh for the upcoming elections.

On Sunday, the BJP named 14 candidates for the Rajya Sabha polls, including former Union Minister R P N Singh and party spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi.

The last day for filing nomination papers is February 15. The term for Rajya Sabha MPs is six years and elections are held after every two years for 33 per cent of the seats. Currently, the Rajya Sabha has a strength of 245 members.

Out of the total 245 members, out of which 233 are representatives of the States and Union territories of Delhi, Puducherry Jammu and Kashmir (w.e.f. 31.10. 2019) 12 are nominated by the President.

Based on population, each state is allocated a certain number of candidates in the Upper House.

Members of the state legislative assemblies choose Rajya Sabha members through an indirect election system of proportional representation by means of a single transferable vote.

The Election Commission has scheduled the Rajya Sabha elections for 15 states, including Uttar Pradesh, for February 27.

Voting will take place from 9 am to 4 pm on this date, with the deadline for nominations set for February 15.

The results of the elections will be announced on the same day, February 27.

The Election Commission has announced the biennial Rajya Sabha polls on February 27 for 56 seats, as the tenure of incumbents ends in April. (ANI)

Raje Meets Nadda Amid Political Speculations

According to sources, Raje’s gesture is being seen as her willingness to co-operate with the BJP high command…reports Asian Lite News

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje on Thursday met BJP national president JP Nadda to clarify her stance on the murmurs of holding up MLAs at a resort to pressurise the party high command and stake claim to the CM post.

Raje was accompanied by her son, Lok Sabha MP Dushyant Singh. A source said that the meeting between the former chief minister and the BJP president lasted around one and a half hours.

Earlier, on Thursday, she credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for her party’s victory in the recently concluded Assembly polls in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

According to sources, Raje’s gesture is being seen as her willingness to co-operate with the BJP high command.

Sharing a video of a felicitation programme for PM Modi organised by the MPs in the Parliament on ‘X’, the former Rajasthan Chief Minister wrote: “The massive victories in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisharh hint that Congress’ false promises and claims did not work in front of PM Modi’s guarantees. PM Modi was given a warm welcome by the MPs at the BJP parliamentary party meeting today.”

Sources said that Raje has sought an appointment from BJP president JP Nadda and Home Minister Amit Shah. She is expected to present her views on the political developments evolving in the state during her meeting with the two top party leaders.

Earlier, former MLA Hemraj Meena, father of MLA Lalit Meena from Kishanganj assembly constituency of Baran district, had charged that MLAs are being forcibly stopped at the behest of Dushyant Singh.

He said that Singh had brought the MLAs from Baran-Jhalawar district to Jaipur. He hosted the MLAs including Lalit Meena at Aapno Rajasthan Resort. When Lalit wanted to come to the party office, he was not allowed to do so.

Sawant, not Shripad Naik, maybe BJP’s face for 2022 polls: Nadda

“Pramod Sawant has done a good job. There has been all round development under Pramod Sawant’s leadership. We are moving ahead with his leadership,” Nadda said…reports Asian Lite News.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and not Union Minister of state for Tourism and Ports Shripad Naik — an MP from Goa — may be the face of the party for the 2022 state Assembly polls, BJP national president J.P. Nadda hinted on Sunday.

Nadda, however, said that the final decision on the selection of the party’s leader for the polls would be taken by the Bharatiya Janata Party’s national parliamentary board, the political outfit’s highest decision-making body.

“Pramod Sawant has done a good job. There has been all round development under Pramod Sawant’s leadership. We are moving ahead with his leadership,” Nadda said.

The top BJP official, however, said that such a decision is declared by the party’s deciding authority, the parliamentary board.

When asked about the demands made by some party leaders to appoint Union Minister of State Shripad Naik, who is a Lok Sabha MP from North Goa, as the party’s face for the 2022 polls, Nadda said that the Union Minister was doing a “very good job” in Delhi.

“He is doing a very good job in Delhi and he is taking care of things… Everybody has an interest, but the interest has to be taken care of by the party. He (Naik) has been assigned a job in Delhi, which he is doing very well,” Nadda said.

Sawant assumed charge as the Chief Minister of Goa in 2019, following the death of former Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar following a prolonged battle with pancreatic cancer.
