Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has met families of Israelis held hostage by Hamas, who have expressed concern about the intensifying attacks on Gaza.

The Missing Families Forum said the night when troops moved into northern Gaza had been “the worst” so far.

It complained that no-one had explained “whether the ground operation endangers the well-being of the 229 hostages”. Netanyahu has promised to do everything possible to bring them home.

Ahead of the meeting, the Hostages and Missing Families Forum said their relatives “are anxious about the fate of their loved ones and are waiting for an explanation” of the Israeli military’s actions.

In response to the statement, Defence Minister Yoav Gallant said he would meet representatives of the group on Sunday. During the meeting, Netanyahu said that recovering the hostages was an “integral” part of the military’s goals.

“Pressure is key. The greater the pressure the greater the chances,” he said. The hostages were taken by Hamas gunmen during an unprecedented attack on southern Israel on 7 October in which 1,400 people were killed.

After the meeting, Hamas said Israel would have to release all Palestinian prisoners to secure freedom for the hostages. Netanyahu said the idea of a swap deal involving hostages for prisoners had been discussed within the Israeli war cabinet but declined to give details.

At a separate news conference, Mr Gallant said Hamas had to be forced to the negotiating table but it was “very complex”. “The more military pressure, the more firepower and the more we strike Hamas – the greater our chances are to bring it to a place where it will agree to a solution that will allow the return of your loved ones,” Gallant told a news conference.

Those in captivity in Gaza include dozens of children and elderly people, as well as military personnel. At least 135 are foreign or dual nationals, including 54 Thais, 15 Argentines and two Britons, according to the Israeli government.

Hamas – which is designated as a terrorist group by Israel, the UK and other powers – has so far released four hostages following mediation by Qatar and Egypt. Two elderly Israeli women were freed on Monday, while an American-Israeli woman and her daughter were freed on 20 October.

There had been speculation before Friday night’s ground operation that Qatar-brokered negotiations over another release deal were accelerating.

But Israeli military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said on Saturday that there was “a deliberate desire of parties with interests, led by Hamas, to make cynical exploitation, psychological terrorism, and to influence our population which is in such a sensitive situation”.

“Most importantly, when we have the information, we will provide it,” he added. “Returning the hostages home is a supreme national effort. And all our activities, operational, intelligence, are aimed at realizing a goal.”

Released hostage Yocheved Lifschitz, an 85-year-old grandmother who was kidnapped alongside her husband Oded from Kibbutz Nir Oz, told reporters in Tel Aviv on Tuesday that she “went through hell”. She described being hit by sticks on the journey to Gaza and being taken into a huge network of underground tunnels that “looked like a spider’s web”.

Lifschitz also said that most of the hostages were being “treated well”. On Thursday, the spokesman for Hamas’s military wing, Abu Ubaida, said around 50 hostages had been killed in Israeli air strikes on Gaza.

SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk held a discussion on Artificial Intelligence (AI) with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday. Earlier, in a post on the official handle of his social media platform X, Musk responded to Netanyahu’s post stating, “Artificial intelligence discussion with PM Netanyahu in an hour.

“Later in the evening, the Israeli Prime Minister took to his official handle on ‘X’ to post that he was looking forward to the discussion with the Tesla CEO on how they could mitigate the risks of AI for the betterment of civilization.  “I look forward to speaking at 9:15 (19:15 Israel time) on X with @elonmusk about how we can harness the opportunities and mitigate the risks of AI for the good of civilization,” Netanyahu wrote.

The Israeli Prime Minister is also scheduled to meet US President Joe Biden on the sidelines of the opening session United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will pay his first visit to China in six years in July. Netanyahu confirmed the trip to a visiting bipartisan US Congressional delegation.

The news comes as the White House has yet to extend Netanyahu an invitation nearly seven months into his sixth term as premier.

A statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office said that the US was notified about Netanyahu’s trip one month ago. The visit is widely viewed as a signal to Washington that Israel has other foreign policy options.

Beijing brokered the rapprochement between Saudi Arabia and Iran in March and has shown an interest in playing a role in finding a resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Earlier this month, Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas visited the Chinese capital for talks.

It is widely believed that Netanyahu’s talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping will focus on Beijing’s help in advancing Israeli-Saudi ties and China’s support for Iran.

Bilateral trade is likely to be on the agenda as well.

Chinese investments in Israel have also been a source of friction between Washington and Jerusalem. The US has raised particular concerns about Chinese investments in Israeli telecoms and criticized Israel for allowing China’s state-owned Shanghai International Port Group to operate the Bay Port at Haifa.

The visit comes on the heels of Beijing hosting Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in mid-June. Abbas was unable to persuade Beijing to take a more active role in mediating the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Meanwhile, Israeli President Isaac Herzog will meet with Biden in Washington next month for the second time since taking office. (ANI/TPS)

Iran is like 50 North Koreas, Netanyahu tells US lawmakers

“To have Iran being able to threaten every city in the United States with nuclear blackmail is a changing of history.” said Netanyahu…reports Asian Lite News

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Thursday met at the Prime Minister’s Office in Jerusalem with a bipartisan US Congressional delegation led by House of Representatives Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence Chairman Michael Turner (Republican Ohio).

In response to a question about Iran, Netanyahu said: “Iran is 50 North Koreas. It is not merely a neighbourhood bully like, the dynasty that rules North Korea. This is an ideological force that views us, Israel, as the small Satan, and views you as the Great Satan. To have Iran being able to threaten every city in the United States with nuclear blackmail is a changing of history.” Prime Minister Netanyahu thanked the Congress people for their broad support of Israel from both sides of the aisle.

Meanwhile, Netanyahu on Thursday visited the ISA Special Operations Headquarters from which a counter-terrorist operation in which two terrorists who murdered Leah Dee and her two daughters on the Passover holiday in April was overseen.

“This morning, the IDF, the ISA and the National Counter-Terrorism Unit took action in the Old City of Nablus, in daylight,” said Netanyahu. “They settled accounts with the murderers of Leah, Maya and Rina Dee, may their memories be a blessing. They confronted these murderers and eliminated them.” “There is a message here that needs to be understood: In recent months, we have eliminated, or captured, 110 terrorists, most of them were eliminated. Our message to the murderers, to whoever attacks us, or tries to attack us is – We will find you. You can hide, you can try to hide, but it will not help. The long arm of the State of Israel will find you.”

The two terrorists were killed on Thursday morning in the Kasbah in Nablus (Shechem) during a joint operation conducted by the Shin Bet, the Border Police, the IDF, and Police Special Forces. The two are identified as Hassan Katnani and Ma’ad Masri.

In addition, Ebrahim Hora, who was described as a senior aide to the two terrorists, was also killed. (ANI/TPS)

Benjamin Netanyahu has been forced to delay his visit to Britain as a number of Israeli pilots have refused to fly him.

The Israeli government has been unable to find a pilot to take him to London in the wake of mass protests over Mr Netanyahu’s hugely controversial plans to overhaul the Israeli legal system.

The prime minister is reportedly set to make a statement later on Thursday about the reforms. He has summoned his defence minister, Yoav Gallant, amid reports Mr Gallant will call for the government’s judicial overhaul to be paused.

The domestic crisis could potentially lead to Mr Netanyahu cancelling his UK visit altogether if he feels compelled to stay in Israel and keep his coalition government together.

A UK Government source told Telegraph, “It is understood that Israeli pilots have been refusing to take Netanyahu to the UK.”

A similar incident occurred during Netanyahu’s visit to Rome in March, when pilots also reportedly refused to fly him. According to Israeli media reports, Netanyahu is still due to fly at 4am local time on Friday morning, having abandoned plans to fly on Thursday evening.

Tens of thousands of Israelis have taken to the streets demanding that Netanyahu, who was re-elected in November, end the legal overhaul.

Critics of his reforms claim they will turn Israel into a “dictatorship” as they will weaken the Israeli supreme court and increase the government’s influence over the appointment of judges.

Netanyahu was due to meet with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Friday. Israeli officials said the regional threat posed by Iran is due to be at the top of the agenda.

Ambassador Gilon said the change in the bilateral relationship between the two countries came after a first-ever visit of the Indian Prime Minister to Israel followed by Netanyahu’s visit to India…reports Asian Lite News

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday discussed ways to strengthen India-Israel relations and deepen cooperation in defence and security.

“Spoke with PM @netanyahu and discussed ways to strengthen the multifaceted India-Israel friendship, deepen our focus on innovation partnership, and our ongoing cooperation in defense and security,” Prime Minister Modi tweeted on Wednesday. Earlier on Wednesday, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu tweeted, “Just spoke with Indian PM @narendramodi about ways to strengthen the close relationship between #Israel and #India. Together we’ll advance security & economic relations, with a focus on high-tech. Exciting times ahead!”

Israeli Ambassador to India, Naor Gilon, recently said Prime Minister Modi’s ‘historic’ visit to Israel in 2017 broke the ice between the two nations and the famous picture of him with ex-Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu is one of the pictures that will stay as a symbol of how things are done.

“The famous picture of PM Modi with ex-Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu at the Olga beach is one that will stay as a symbol of how things are done,” Gilon told ANI while explaining the bond between India-Israel.

Ambassador Gilon said the change in the bilateral relationship between the two countries came after a first-ever visit of the Indian Prime Minister to Israel followed by Netanyahu’s visit to India.

“We have to say that there were visits before that of Indian President and Israeli President, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, but the visit of PM Modi and a few months later in 2017, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu came to India on January 18 – this was a game changer to relations between the two countries,” added Gilon.

PM Modi was on a visit to Israel from July 4-6, 2017, at the invitation of Netanyahu. The Prime Minister had called the visit “ground-breaking” after he was received personally by Netanyahu at the airport.

India established diplomatic relations with Israel in 1992 and since then, the relationship has evolved into a multi-dimensional partnership. “The relations started a little bit slower than hoped, but the big change in 1992 established full diplomatic relations between the two countries,” said Gilon.

The Israeli envoy expanded on how both countries upgraded relations to a strategic partnership, adding that several doors opened for cooperation.

“Thanks to that change, push that was done – we call it de-hyphenation — in a way India came and said- we have Palestinian issue and Pakistan, we have other issues-Israel will be dealt as Israel, the interest we have with Israel, not the interest we have with Palestine, we will deal with them or issues of Pakistan, other issues. I think this a very healthy approach which enabled a strong relationship between the two countries,” the envoy added. (ANI)

It is the most rightist government in Israel’s history…reports Asian Lite News

Benjamin Netanyahu, the longest-serving Israeli leader, has returned to power as the country’s Prime Minister at the helm of an extreme-right coalition.

In an official inauguration ceremony at Parliament on Thursday, lawmakers voted by 63-54 in favour of approving the new government, reports Xinhua news agency.

The new government is made up of an alliance of Netanyahu’s conservative Likud party; the pro-settler Religious Zionism which calls for annexation of the West Bank; the Jewish Power party whose leader was convicted of supporting “Jewish terrorism and inciting racism”; and the Noam party, an extreme-right party that opposes LGBTQ rights, as well as Shas and United Torah Judaism, two ultra-Orthodox parties.

It is the most rightist government in Israel’s history.

“I hear the constant cries of the opposition about the end of the country and democracy,” but “we will act to make Israel a strong and thriving global power”, Netanyahu told Parliament ahead of the official swearing-in.

Outside Parliament building, hundreds were rallying and protesting against the government, which vowed ahead of its inauguration to expand settlements in the West Bank, implement far-reaching reforms of the judicial system, allocate massive subsidies to its hardline religious allies and pass anti-LGBTQ legislation.

Before the recent elections, Netanyahu’s allies pledged to pass legislation that will cancel his ongoing trial over charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust.

Netanyahu, who is leading his sixth government, served as Israel’s Prime Minister from 1996 to 1999 and again from 2009 to 2021 before being ousted in June 2021 by a centrist coalition formed by Yair Lapid and Naftali Bennett.

He was re-elected on November 1 in the fifth parliamentary elections held in the country in fewer than four years as no candidate had won enough votes to form a majority coalition in previous elections, causing a lingering political crisis.

Netanyahu’s bloc won a majority of 64 seats in the 120-seat Parliament.

Jerusalem, Dec 23 (IANS) Israel’s Prime Minister-designate Benjamin Netanyahu has agreed to annex the occupied West Bank in a coalition deal that was made public.

Netanyahu, who signed a series of coalition deals on Wednesday and Thursday, announced that he had succeeded in forming a coalition government that is set to bring him back to power as the leader of the most right-wing government in Israeli history, Xinhua news agency reported.

In a deal that Netanyahu’s Likud party signed with the Religious Zionism, a pro-settler party led by Bezalel Smotrich, the former promised to draft and advance a plan to annex the West Bank that Israel seized in the 1967 Middle East war. The Palestinians hope to establish an independent state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as the capital.

According to the agreement, a copy of which has been seen by Xinhua, “the Prime Minister will lead the formulation and promotion of a policy within which (Israeli) sovereignty will be extended to Judea and Samaria.” Judea and Samaria is a frequently used Israeli term for the West Bank.

The timing of the move is not mentioned, but the agreement stated that the implementation of the plan will take into account “national and international interests of Israel”.

A coalition deal that Netanyahu signed with Jewish Power, an extreme-right party led by Itamar Ben-Gvir, says that a law that bans candidates who incite racism from running in parliamentary election will be cancelled.

Netanyahu’s reliance on ultranationalist and ultra-Orthodox parties for his return to power has raised concerns in Israel.

“The government being formed here is dangerous, radical and irresponsible. This will end badly,” outgoing Prime Minister Yair Lapid, leader of the centrist party of Yesh Atid, warned in a televised address on Thursday evening.

“Netanyahu is weak, and they (his partners) have formed the most extreme government in the nation’s history,” said Lapid.

Netanyahu needs to finalise the agreements with his coalition partners and appoint ministers before a deadline on January 2, 2023, the latest date his government can be sworn in.

Under the new law, party members who wish to break off must need the support of at least a third of their party members, making such a move almost impossible….reports Asian Lite News

The Israeli parliament has passed a law intended to strengthen the emerging coalition of Prime Minister-designate Benjamin Netanyahu ahead of his looming deadline on Wednesday midnight to form a new government.

The so-called “anti-defection” bill, approved by 63-51 on Monday in the first session of the new Parliament, cancels a provision passed in 2021 that allowed four party members to break off into a separate party, reports Xinhua news agency.

Under the new law, party members who wish to break off must need the support of at least a third of their party members, making such a move almost impossible.

The new law has been widely perceived as a move to prevent lawmakers with Netanyahu’s right-wing Likud party to split off, as the veteran leader has been struggling for more than a month to put together a new governing coalition after his bloc’s victory in November 1 elections by gaining 64 seats in the 120-seat Parliament.

Over the past few days, Netanyahu’s bloc has been stepping up efforts to pass bills that will enable the implementation of the agreements he signed with coalition partners in return for their support.

On Tuesday morning, Parliament was convened to discuss a bill that will expand the authorities of Itamar Ben-Gvir, the ultranationalist leader of the Jewish Power party, and is expected to vote on the bill in the evening in a first reading out of three ones needed for its final approval.

Ben-Gvir agreed to join Netanyahu’s government on condition of being appointed as Minister of National Security, a new post created specifically for him.

The bill, if passed, will give Ben-Gvir, who is known for his anti-Arab remarks and was convicted of support for a terrorist group and incitement to racism, greater power over the police activity and expanded control of the Border Police, a paramilitary unit that operates in the occupied West Bank.

In another controversial legislation, Netanyahu is pushing to cancel the ban on criminals convicted with a suspended prison sentence to serve as ministers.

Without the law, Aryeh Deri, the veteran leader of the Jewish ultra-Orthodox party of Shas, could not be appointed as minister in the new government because he was convicted of tax fraud with a 12-month suspended sentence in early 2022.

Ahead of the elections, Netanyahu’s political partners had announced plans to pass legislation to weaken the Supreme Court and cancel his ongoing trial over corruption charges.

Netanyahu set to make comeback, Exit polls say

Benjamin Netanyahu, the former Israeli Prime Minister who was toppled last year after 12 consecutive years in power, is on course of making a comeback following the general election, exit polls revealed on Wednesday.

Tuesday’s election was the fifth since 2019, reports Xinhua news agency.

Exit polls of three main Israeli TV channels indicated that the country’s longest serving Prime Minister and his alliance of far-right and ultra-Orthodox parties won 61-62 seats in the 120-seat Parliament, or Knesset, suggesting they have enough seats to form a ruling coalition government.

Speaking with supporters at his campaign headquarters, Netanyahu, 73, on Tuesday night said the early results are “a good start”, and called the supporters to wait for the final results.

Exit polls suggested his Likud party won 30 to 31 seats.

Sitting Prime Minister Yair Lapid’s Yesh Atid party was projected to gain 22-24 seats and his wider alliance to secure 54 to 55 seats, according to the exit polls.

Lapid said early Wednesday morning that it was too early to make conclusions about the final outcome.

“Nothing is decided” until the last vote is counted, said Lapid.

Neither Netanyahu nor Lapid has claimed victory yet.

The polls also showed that ultra-nationalist lawmaker Itamar Ben-Gvir’s Religious Zionism won 14-15 seats, becoming Israel’s third-largest party.

Bezalel Smotrich, chairman of the Religious Zionist Party, tweeted that the party “made history”, adding: “This is the day God made a revelation and we rejoice in it.”

Hadash-Ta’al, an alliance of two Arab parties that doesn’t support either of the blocs, is projected to win four seats, exit polls indicated.

The elections were held after repeated polls with inconclusive results that have paralysed the Israeli political system for almost four years.

Netanyahu is one of Israel’s most controversial political figures. He is a firm supporter of Israel’s settlement-building project in the West Bank, occupied since the 1967 Middle East war, reports the BBC.

Settlements there are considered illegal under international law, though Israel disputes this.

He opposes the creation of a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip as a solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict – a formula supported by most of the international community, including US President Joe Biden’s administration.

Netanyahu is also currently on trial for alleged bribery, fraud and breach of trust — charges he fiercely denies.

His possible partners in a Likud-led coalition government have said they would reform the law, in a move which would bring a halt to his trial.
