Oscar-Qualifying Animated Short Film AMERICAN SIKH

The film American Sikh follows the life of a Sikh man who proves that anyone can be a superhero – a positive film for anyone who feels they don’t fit in. A feature by columnist Riccha Grrover for Asian Lite International.

On Monday December 4th 2023, there was an online Q&A with the directors of AMERICAN SIKH Ryan Westra and Vishavjit Singh, as well as the films executive producers Academy Award® winner Guneet Monga Kapoor and Indian American chef and filmmaker Vikas Khanna.

Ryan Westra and Vishavjit Singh teamed up on AMERICAN SIKH to bring more diverse representation and experiences into today’s media and to challenge perceptions of what an American (and a superhero) can look like. 2023 Academy Award winner Guneet Monga Kapoor (Elephant Whisperer) and one of Vanity Fair’s top ten chef’s Vika Khanna serve as Executive Producers for this important film.

Vishavjit Singh is publicly known for his Captain America persona — a Sikh man equipped with his turban and beard — fighting against bigotry, intolerance and perceptions of what an American should look like. But Singh, the only member of his family born in the U.S., didn’t always feel he could embrace his identity this way.

The true and unlikely story of an American born, turban-wearing Sikh man, Vishavjit Singh, who after a lifetime of facing prejudice, self-doubt and violence, finally finds acceptance in a superhero costume.

Guneet Monga Kapoor is a trailblazing filmmaker, not only is she the first producer in India to win an Academy Award for Best Documentary Short for Elephant Whisperer, she is also one of the first producers from India to be invited into the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Science. Guneet is the founder of Sikhya Entertainment, a Mumbai-based production house. She has produced close to 30 feature films including ground-breaking cinema such as LUNCHBOX, MONSOON SHOOTOUT and MASSAN. This incredible woman was also one of the Executive Producers behind PERIOD END OF SENTENCE, which won an Academy Award in 2019.

Vikas Khanna is an internationally acclaimed Indian American chef, filmmaker, and author. He is a James Beard nominee and one of the first Indian chefs to be awarded a Michelin Star in the U.S. He has featured amongst the 10 most influential chefs in the world by

Vanity Fair. Vikas is the author of 41 award winning books, and the creator of HOLY KITCHENS creating awareness of Sikhism through community kitchens. THE LAST COLOR marks Khanna’s debut as a film writer and director, which raised awareness of the disinheritance of widows, whilst BAREFOOT EMPRESS focussed on education for girls in India.

AMERICAN SIKH was created in partnership with Singh as the director/producer and Los Angeles-based director Ryan Westra. It was animated by Studio Showoff, a Melbourne-based production house founded by Ivan Dixon and Sean Zwan that has produced work for Childish Gambino, HBO and Cartoon Network.

Director Ryan Westra has been fortunate to capture many powerful and important stories. He’s traveled rural Punjab capturing undocumented stories of a Sikh genocide, documented the struggle of indigenous peoples against oil companies in Montana, followed the HIV/AIDS outreach work of an NGO in Mozambique, edited an HBO feature documentary on reproductive rights, filmed the intensity of para-athletes pushing their limits, shot content for Headspace around a monastery in the Himalayas about mindfulness, shot a documentary about re-housing the most at-risk homeless in Los Angeles, and has had minor roles on Netflix and HBO series that deal with wrongful conviction and bringing cult leaders to justice.

Director/Producer Vishavjit Singh is a New York City based illustrator, writer, performance artist, diversity speaker and creator of Sikhtoons.com. He got his spark for cartooning in the post 9/11 tragedy when Americans with turbaned and bearded countenance became targets of hate/bias crimes.  For the past few years Vishavjit has been traveling across the U.S. with his Sikh Captain America persona armed with a turban, beard and humor to tackle fear, anxiety, bigotry and intolerance. He uses storytelling as a tool to create a space for challenging conversations around identity, race, bias, vulnerability and how to be agents for change. Vishavjit hosts talks & keynotes in schools, universities, government agencies and companies including Google, Apple, NASA & Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus. His message and work has been covered by a number of news outlets, including the New York Times, NPR, BBC, The Atlantic, Huffington Post, The Guardian and Time Magazine.

Not only was this incredible film featured on Good Morning America and CNN, in just over a month it won four top film awards including Best Short Animation at Sidewalk Film Festival in Birmingham, Alabama, Best Animation at San Diego International Film Festival,

Grand Jury Award for Best Short Documentary at Tasveer Film Festival in Seattle and the Audience Choice Award at Tasveer Film Festival. AMERICAN SIKH also received a special mention at Chicago International Film Festival in Best Short Documentary and an Honorable Mention at Tallgrass Film Festival in Documentary Short Film.

AMERICAN SIKH has qualified to be considered for a 2024 Academy® Award.

FFI launches call for Indian films to compete at 96th Oscars

Kottarakara also called upon filmmakers to participate in large numbers to get nominated as India’s official entry to the 96th Oscars for which the FFI will provide all help…reports Asian Lite News

The Film Federation of India (FFI) — the country’s apex body of all film associations — has invited applications from Indian films which could go as the official entry to the 96th Academy Awards this year, an official said here on Tuesday.

FFI President Ravi Kottarakara said that the entries are open for 25 days — from August 15 to September 10 — for this year’s Oscars nominations.

“India is on the cusp of another amazing year in the films and entertainment space and our movies are making a mark at various international platforms, including the Oscars. Last year, films like ‘RRR’ and ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ brought glory to India at the Academy Awards,” Kottarakara said.

Soon, he said the FFI will nominate a chairman of the jury for the Oscars entry along with other big names from the creative field who will be part of the jury.

The jury will conduct a closed viewing of all the films that would apply for this year’s Oscars nomination between September 15 and September 25 in Chennai, and decide the country’s final entry which will be announced on September 26.

Kottarakara also called upon filmmakers to participate in large numbers to get nominated as India’s official entry to the 96th Oscars for which the FFI will provide all help.

Among the requirements for the International Film Feature category of Oscars, the films must be released between December 1, 2022 and October 31, 2023, and must be publicly exhibited for at least seven consecutive days in a commercial theatre.

Why India’s entries rarely get an Oscar nomination?

Rahman, incidentally, had been nominated for a Best Original Music Score Oscar in 2010 for another acclaimed Danny Boyle movie, “127 Hours”, but he lost the trophy to the music composers of “The Social Network”…reports Sourish Bhattacharyya

In the past 55 years in which India has been sending entries for the Best International Feature Film Oscar, it has been on just three occasions that the selected movies, despite some of them being critically acclaimed both in India and abroad, have made it to the nominations shortlist

A dismal record, if any, calling in question the selection process. The three films on this rather bald list are the Nargis-Sunil Dutt classic “Mother India” (1957), Mira Nair’s “Salaam Bombay” (1988) and Ashutosh Gowarikar’s Aamir Khan-starrer “Lagaan” (2001).

This year, the official selection — “Chhello Show”, Nalin Kumar Pandya a.k.a. Pan Nalin’s Gujarati film — again lost out to a strong field comprising, among others, the German World War I drama “All Quiet on the Western Front” and the Golden Globe winner, “Argentina, 1985” (the historical drama from Argentina around the fight waged by a group of lawyers against the South American’s nation’s last military junta).

The official selection is made by a committee appointed by the Film Federation of India, the apex body of film producers, cutting across languages and regional cinema industries. Is the committee selecting the right films? Moreover, is it backing the selected film with the kind of marketing budget that a pitch for the Oscars calls for?

“RRR”, which was the awards season favourite till it was snubbed by BAFTA and had to be content with just one Oscar nomination for “Naatu Naatu”, was backed by the theatrical distribution and marketing company, Variance Films, in its efforts and a war chest reportedly of Rs 80 crore.

Now, “RRR” can at least claim that “Naatu Naatu” is the first Indian song of an Indian film to be nominated for an Oscar (“Jai Ho” was an Indian song, yes, but “Slumdog Millionaire” wasn’t an Indian film).

Interestingly, “EO”, a Belgian film (and Cannes favourite) about the road trip of a donkey backed by Variance, has got a Best International Feature Film nomination.

The only films based out of India that have won Oscars are Sir Richard Attenborough’s “Gandhi” (which got for Bhanu Athaiya the Oscar for Best Costume) and Danny Boyle’s “Slumdog Millionaire” (including the two that went to A.R. Rahman for Best Original Music Score and Best Song for “Jai Ho”).

Rahman, incidentally, had been nominated for a Best Original Music Score Oscar in 2010 for another acclaimed Danny Boyle movie, “127 Hours”, but he lost the trophy to the music composers of “The Social Network”.

This year, however, good news continues to pour in for Indian documentary filmmakers.

55 years, 3 nods: Why India’s official entries rarely get an Oscar nomination

Shaunak Sen’s “All That Breathes”, which had won the Golden Eye award for best documentary at Cannes 2022, has been nominated for Best Documentary Feature, an honour that went last year to Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh’s “Writing With Fire”.

Kartiki Gonsalves’s short film “The Elephant Whisperers”, the visually gripping and emotionally elevating story of Bomman, Bellie, and their child Raghu (an elephant calf), who live in the heart of the Theppakadu Elephant camp at the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve in Tamil Nadu, has bagged a nomination in its category.

These two nominations will do a world of good to documentaries produced in India with unusual stories from the lives of ordinary people. They will spur more people to invest money on the right talent with ideas that could bring home an Oscar.

After receiving international acclaim and bagging a Golden Globe award, RRR team now has its eyes set on the biggest of them all – Oscar.

The Golden Globe award for Best Original Song has heightened the expectations of not just S.S. Rajamouli and his team but the entire Tollywood.

RRR for Oscars has been one of the top trends for the last couple of days and the fans of Junior NTR and Ram Charan are rooting for the epic action drama to bag the Academy awards.

Rajamouli with both the heroes of the movie and other members of the team were present in Dolby Theatre, Hollywood when music director M.M. Keeravani received the Golden Globe award for Naatu Naatu song.

The foot-tapping hit has become the latest national craze and the spotlight is on what made this song so different that it beat the likes of Rihanna and Lady Gaga.

The song has already been shortlisted for the 95th Academy Awards. It will be known on January 24 if the song makes it to the nomination list.

Adding to the excitement of his fans, Ram Charan has said that if RRR goes on to win the Oscar he will dance his heart out with Junior NTR.

The popular actor said in an interview that they would again dance for 17 times if the movie bags the Oscar. He was referring to the number of takes shot during the shoot for the song.

The combination of music director M. M. Keeravani’s melodious music, lyrics of Chandrabose, voice of Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava and choreography by Prem Rakshith Agave the song which proved an icing on the cake for the blockbuster.

Prem Rakshith’s team is said to have recorded as many as 80 variations of hook steps. It finalised the best variation which went on to prove a huge hit.

It will be interesting to see if Ram Charan and Junior NTR recreate the magic on stage if the movie bags the biggest award.

Oscars 2023 to live telecast all 23 categories

The 95th Academy Awards will take place on March 12, 2023, live from the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood…reports Asian Lite News

All 23 categories will be aired during the Oscars 2023 telecast.

Bill Kramer, CEO of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, announced the news exclusively to ‘Variety’ on Tuesday.

“I can confirm that all categories will be included in the live telecast,” he said.

The news comes after eight different Oscar categories — original score, makeup and hairstyling, documentary short, film editing, production design, animated short, live action short and sound — were cut from the main telecast at the 2022 Academy Awards, leading to much outrage across the film industry.

“We are committed to having a show that celebrates the artisans, the arts and sciences and the collaborative nature of moviemaking. This is very much what the mission of the Academy is, and I am very hopeful that we can do a show that celebrates all components of moviemaking in an entertaining and engaging way,” Kramer told ‘Variety’.

Since his appointment in June, Kramer said he’s had many conversations about restoring the missing categories. “We are thrilled to be in a position to execute that.”

Jimmy Kimmel will return for the third time to host the Oscars. Kramer said he was excited to have the late-night host back. “I love having someone hosting the show who knows live television. I think that’s so critical,” he said.

When asked about what else audiences can expect from the telecast, Kramer said: “All I will say right now is that our anniversary, the 95th Oscars, is extremely important to us. I think it sets a really interesting rhythm for our 100th. You see this in the museum, I think we are able to celebrate our legacy while bringing the Academy into the future and the show will reflect that.”

Executive producers and showrunners Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner of White Cherry Entertainment will produce the Oscars, and Weiss returns, for the eighth consecutive year, as the show’s director.

The 95th Academy Awards will take place on March 12, 2023, live from the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood.

The ceremony will be televised live on ABC and in more than 200 territories worldwide

“It’s like I wanna be a vessel for love, I wanna say thank you to Venus and Serena and the entire Williams family for trusting me with your story.”…reports Asian Lite News

Hollywood star Will Smith won the honour for ‘Actor in a Lead Role’ for the movie ‘King Richard’ at the 94th Academy Award held at the Dolby theatre.

‘King Richard’ is a biographical sports drama film directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green. It follows the life of Richard Williams, the father and coach of famed tennis players Venus and Serena Williams, who were executive producers of the film. It also stars Aunjanue Ellis, Saniyya Sidney, Demi Singleton, Tony Goldwyn, and Jon Bernthal.

Smith was nominated alongside Javier Bardem ‘Being the Ricardos’, Benedict Cumberbatch ‘The Power of the Dog’, Andrew Garfield ‘Tick, Tick… Boom!’ and Denzel Washington ‘The Tragedy of Macbeth’.

A teary-eyed Smith kissed his wife Jada Pinkett Smith before going on the stage and then made an emotional speech.

He said: “I was the first defender of his (Richard Williams) family. At this moment I am overwhelmed with what God is calling me to do in this world. Making this film I got to protect who was one of the most delicate people. I got to protect Saniyya Sidney and Demi Singleton, two actresses playing Venus and Serena.

“I am being called on in my life to love people and to protect people and to be a river to my people to do what we do. You gotta be able to take abuse, people will talk crazy about you and disrespect you and to pretend that it is okay.

“It’s like I wanna be a vessel for love, I wanna say thank you to Venus and Serena and the entire Williams family for trusting me with your story.”

Smith said that he wants to be an “ambassador of that kind of love, care and concern.”

Jessica best for ‘The Eyes of Tammy Faye’

Jessica Chastain, who won the honour for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her work in biographical drama, ‘The Eyes of Tammy Faye’ at the 94th Academy Awards, shared that in difficult times like the one which the entire world is going through, she feels inspired by her character’s radical acts of love.

The coveted award was presented to her on Sunday night by the legendary actor, Anthony Hopkins. As she accepted the award, Jessica took to the stage to give a speech, broadcast live from the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.

She thanked her “brilliant” co-star Andrew Garfield and drew the audience’s attention towards the topic of suicide which continues to be the leading cause of death in the US.

“So many people out there feel hopelessness and alone and suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States. It’s touched many families.

“It’s touched mine and especially members of the LGBTQ community. we’re faced with discriminatory and bigoted legislation that is sweeping our country with the only goal of further dividing us. There’s violence and hate crimes. In times like this, I think of Tammy and I’m inspired by her radical acts of love.” she added.

Chastain preceded over fellow nominees — Olivia Colman for ‘The Lost Daughter’, Penelope Cruz for ‘Parallel Mothers’, Nicole Kidman for ‘Being the Ricardos’ and Kristen Stewart for ‘Spencer’ — for the win.

The worldwide excitement over the 94th Academy Awards (the Oscars), which will be held on March 27 at Hollywood’s iconic Dolby Theatre, acquired a frenzied pitch on Tuesday evening (early morning U.S. Pacific Time) with the live announcement on Twitter of the much-awaited nominations.

For India, the big disappointment was that the Suriya-starrer ‘Jai Bhim’, which was a hot favourite for a nomination nod, did not make the cut. Neighbouring Bhutan, though, made history when its official entry, “Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom”, found its way into the Best International Feature Film nominations.

Of course, in the international category, Riyosuke Hamaguchi’s “Drive My Car”, which has been picking just about every major award announced thus far, has got the nods for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best International Feature Film. The Japanese film is based on the globally celebrated writer Haruki Murakami’s short story.

Kenneth Branagh, whose ‘Belfast’ is a frontrunner, had a jolly good reason to pour himself a Jameson, having ramped up his career record by reaching the pinnacle of seven nominations in as many categories in his lifetime.

For diversity watchers, the big news was the presence of two Black actors in the noms for Best Actor: Will Smith for “King Richard” and Denzel Washington, the second Black man to get an Oscar in the history of the Awards, for “The Tragedy of Macbeth”.

And Jane Campion’s feminine take on the Wild West, ‘The Power of the Dog’, is in the running for all major awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Lead Actor (Benedict Cumberbatch), two nods for Best Supporting Actor (Jesse Plemons and Kodi Smit-McPhee) and Best Supporting Actress (Kirsten Dunst), among others.

Here’s the full list of the key nominations:

Best Supporting Actor: Ciarïn Hinds (“Belfast”), Troy Kotsur (“CODA”), Jesse Plemons (“The Power of the Dog”), J.K. Simmons (“Being the Ricardos”) and Kodi Smit-McPhee (“The Power of the Dog”).

Hopkins enjoys the novelty of doing different

“My wife, Stella, worries about my health and once said, ‘Do you want to keep going until you drop dead?’ I replied, ‘I guess so, unless my health gives out first’…reports Asian Lite News.

Age is not a barrier for actors like Anthony Hopkins. Hopkins is 83 and in fighting form in front of the camera, having just won an Oscar as Best Actor for “The Father”. He asserts that he enjoys working, which is what keeps him going.

“I enjoy working. I enjoy getting out of the house and doing something different. I enjoy the novelty of it. I love the activity,” Hopkins told Saga magazine, according to an aceshowbiz.com report.

“My wife, Stella, worries about my health and once said, ‘Do you want to keep going until you drop dead?’ I replied, ‘I guess so, unless my health gives out first’. And she said, ‘Well, that’s good, if it’s really what you want to do’. And it is. Acting is my passion,” he added.

Hopkins shares that his role in “The Father” took its toll on him.

“What was difficult about ‘The Father’ was that playing an older man, I actually started to feel older. My back would ache and my legs would ache.

“The theory I have — and it may be a cockamamie theory — is that the brain is not as sharp as we think it is, so if I started to tell it I’m an old man with dementia, it will believe me,” Hopkins said.

He added: “After I stopped playing the part, I started feeling better and better, and thought, ‘Oh, good, I’m coming back’.”
