British-Indian is Tory parliamentary candidate for Oxford

Halfway through this role, he was redeployed to the Intensive Care Unit due during the Covid-19 pandemic…reports Asian Lite News

British-Indian dental surgeon Vinay Raniga has been chosen as the Conservative parliamentary candidate for Oxford West and Abingdon, a constituency in the South East region of England.

As a National Health Service (NHS) dentist, Raniga serves his local community by treating their oral disease and by educating them in prevention.

“Public service is an honour and a serious responsibility. I deliver for my NHS patients; now it’s time to deliver for Oxford West & Abingdon,” Raniga said, making the announcement on X last week.

“I am honoured to be trusted by local residents to fight for the place I live, work and studied in. I look forward to meeting, listening to and serving many more of you,” he added.

A year after graduating from Barts and the London School of Dentistry in 2018, he worked as a junior head and neck surgeon at Northwick Park Hospital in London.

Halfway through this role, he was redeployed to the Intensive Care Unit due during the Covid-19 pandemic.

As a public policy and government affairs consultant for Mydentist — the largest dental provider of NHS dentistry in the UK — Raniga’s responsibility has been to devise policies to improve access to dental care across the country.

“Congratulations to Dr Vinay Raniga on his selection as our new Parliamentary Candidate for Oxford West & Abingdon. Vinay is a great local campaigner and will work hard to hold the Lib Dems (Liberal Democrats) to account over their failure to deliver for local residents,” the Oxfordshire Conservatives wrote on X.

The Oxford West and Abingdon seat is currently been held by Layla Moran, a Liberal Democrat, since June 2017.

The constituency includes Abingdon town, village of Kidlington, and the western and northern parts of the city of Oxford, and some of the colleges of the University of Oxford.

‘Rizz’ Tops Oxford’s Word of the Year Poll

“Rizz” was one of eight words on a shortlist, all chosen to reflect the mood, ethos or preoccupations of 2023…reports Asian Lite News

After more than 32,000 votes and a team of language experts, Oxford’s Word of the Year 2023 is “rizz” — an internet slang which pertains to someone’s ability to attract another person through style, charm, or attractiveness.

According to the Oxford University Press, the term “rizz” is from the middle part of the word ‘charisma’.

“Use of the word as recorded in our corpus has increased dramatically in 2023, with a peak in June 2023, when actor Tom Holland was asked in a widely reported interview about his ‘rizz’, to which he answered, ‘I have no rizz whatsoever, I have limited rizz’,” it said in a statement.

According to Oxford, the word “rizz” can also be used as a verb, often in the phrase “rizz up”, which means “to attract, seduce, or chat up (a person)”.

“Rizz” was one of eight words on a shortlist, all chosen to reflect the mood, ethos or preoccupations of 2023.

The list was narrowed down in a public vote, before Oxford lexicographers made the final decision, the BBC reported.

Last year’s Oxford word of the year was “goblin mode”, another slang term describing “unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly, or greedy” behaviour.

In November, the makers of Collins Dictionary revealed their word of 2023 as “artificial intelligence”.

Oxford vax designer Sarah Gilbert honoured with Barbie

Her vaccine – the Oxford-AstraZeneca jab – is now the most widely used around the world, with doses sent to more than 170 countries…reports Asian Lite News.

Toy giant Mattel has created a doll of the scientist who designed UK’s Covid-19 vaccine, Prof Dame Sarah Gilbert, media reported.

Mattel hopes this will “inspire the next generation to take after these heroes and give back”.

Dame Sarah said she found the creation “very strange” at first – but she hoped it would inspire children, the BBC reported.

“My wish is that my doll will show children careers they may not be aware of, like a vaccinologist,” she was quoted as saying.

Her Barbie is one of six to honour women working in science, technology, engineering and maths (Stem).

The others include an Australian medic who helped create a reusable gown for health workers, and a Brazilian biomedical researcher.

Vaccinologist Dame Sarah – who was recognised with a damehood in the Queen’s Birthday Honours – began designing a coronavirus vaccine in early 2020 when Covid first emerged in China.

Her vaccine – the Oxford-AstraZeneca jab – is now the most widely used around the world, with doses sent to more than 170 countries.

“I am passionate about inspiring the next generation of girls into Stem careers and hope that children who see my Barbie will realise how vital careers in science are to help the world around us,” the BBC quoted Dame Sarah as saying.
