Sunak, Patel unlikely to be in Truss cabinet

Earlier on Tuesday, Truss was invited by the British monarch Queen Elizabeth II to head the UK’s government after she won a leadership contest in the ruling Conservative party on Monday…reports Asian Lite News

As a first major step, Britain’s new Prime Minister Elizabeth Truss, the third woman to be at the apex of a British government, could freeze household energy bills at their current level for about 18 months to tackle the severe cost of living crisis that has gripped the country. Financial Times estimated such an intervention could cost the British Treasury 100 billion pounds.

The Guardian newspaper maintained Truss will pack her cabinet with loyalists and there was unlikely to be any place in it for her defeated opponent in the 8-week race for the premiership Rishi Sunak, who is of Indian extraction. It reported that Kwasi Kwarteng could replace him as Chancellor of the Exchequer. Meanwhile, Sunak extended his ‘full support’ to Truss.

The Bank of England, the United Kingdom’s central bank, had forecast about the month ago that the British economy would sink into recession in the next quarter and remain in such a condition for five consecutive quarters. The proposed subsidy, while welcome for Britons wilting under extraordinary energy prices, will impose a further burden on the government’s finances.

Furthermore, it indicated that Home Secretary Priti Patel was destined to be banished to the back benches, with another person of Indian origin Suella Braverman filling her post. With James Cleverly tipped to become Foreign Secretary — a position Truss occupied — only Ben Wallace, the Defence Secretary, could retain his portfolio among the top four ‘great offices of state’. It remains to be seen if Alok Sharma retains a presence in the cabinet.

Earlier on Tuesday, Truss was invited by the British monarch Queen Elizabeth II to head the UK’s government after she won a leadership contest in the ruling Conservative party on Monday.

The day of constitutional formalities began on Tuesday with Boris Johnson finally leaving 10 Downing Street, the office-cum-residence of a British prime minister, after he was forced to resign following being fined by the London Metropolitan Police for attending social gatherings in violation of rules during a Covid lockdown period. He was also accused of misleading parliament on the issue, which is traditionally a sackable offence in the UK.

However, in a farewell speech outside the door of Number 10, he described himself as a ‘booster rocket’ which had ‘fulfilled its function’, before flying to Balmoral Castle in Scotland, where Elizabeth, 96, is presently in residence, to submit his resignation. Normally she grants audiences for such purposes at Buckingham Palace in London; but could not make the trip down to the British capital because she now suffers from ‘episodic mobility issues’.

Johnson journey was followed by Truss separately undertaking the same trip to be formally asked by Britain’s head of state to form the next administration.

The process completed a remarkable exhibition of revolving door politics, with Truss becoming the UK’s fourth prime minister in six years.

The instability began in June 2016 with David Cameron stepping down after he lost the Brexit vote.

He was succeeded by Theresa May, Britain’s second woman prime minister after Margaret Thatcher, until she was ousted by her MPs and Johnson took over the reins.

Goa to take up issue of e-visa with Patel

In 2019, about 71,27,000 were domestic tourists who arrived in Goa, while 9,31,000 were foreign tourists. But this number dropped in 2020 and 2021 as Covid pandemic had struck the coastal state…reports Asian Lite News

The Goa government has decided to take up the issue of ‘e-Visa’ to the UK with the Central government to help the tourism industry of the state.

Goa tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte on Thursday said that providing e-Visa is also important for the state to get the same flow of people, which the government is looking forward.

He was speaking during a meeting of the World Travel and Tourism Council-India, here.

“Chief Minister Pramod Sawant in his forthcoming meeting with Home Minister (Amit Shah) will sort out the issue of e-Visa as far as the UK is concerned. We will try our level best. e-Visa which is important for you, same is for the government, as the same flow of people we are looking forward,” Khaunte said.

Rohan Khaunte had earlier said that the coastal state’s tourism is predominantly dependent on the UK and Russia, and some parts of Europe. “Government is taking all steps to get a good footfall with good spending,” he had said.

In 2019, about 71,27,000 were domestic tourists who arrived in Goa, while 9,31,000 were foreign tourists. But this number dropped in 2020 and 2021 as Covid pandemic had struck the coastal state.

Congress MLA Aleixo Sequeira, in recently concluded assembly session, had demanded that the central government should make the UK eligible for e-visa and also bring fees of visa on par to other countries.

Travel and Tourism Association of Goa (TTAG), in June, had urged Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to convince the central government to include UK, Canada, Kyrgyzstan and other nations for issuance of e-visas.

TTAG had stated that Goa’s tourism sector has suffered due to withdrawal of e-visa for travellers from the UK, Canada, Kyrgyzstan and other countries.

According to TTAG, mostly senior citizens from the UK visit Goa and hence they find it difficult to apply for a regular paper visa at the Indian embassy, which involves additional cost of travelling and other expenses.

Patel condemns anti-semitic attack in North London

The London police have released a CCTV image of a man they said they need to speak with in connection with a hate crime outside an overground train station in Camden on December 2…reports Asian Lite News.

Home Minister Priti Patel on Thursday condemned a “seriously disturbing” anti-Semitic attack in north London, and said she was in close contact with the Metropolitan Police and a charity protecting the Jewish community in the UK.

“Seriously disturbing antisemitic incident in north London. I will remain in close contact with @metpoliceuk and @CST_UK [Community Security Trust] as the investigation progresses and I would urge anyone with info to contact the police immediately,” Patel wrote on her official Twitter account.

The London police have released a CCTV image of a man they said they need to speak with in connection with a hate crime outside an overground train station in Camden on December 2.

The victim – a man in his twenties – was approached by the suspect, who made anti-Semitic comments after damaging a display that had been raised to celebrate Chanukah. The Campaign Against Antisemitism said in a statement that the alleged assailant told the victim that he was “looking for a Jew to kill” before leaving the scene.

The campaign group also claimed that the police faced criticism for their initially slow response to the attack, but that the investigation has been upgraded following intervention by the CST.
