PM Modi Congratulates New Portuguese Counterpart

Portugal’s new centre-right minority government led by Montenegro came to power amid uncertainty around its long-term viability…reports Asian Lite News

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday extended his wishes to his newly elected Portuguese counterpart, Luis Montenegro, saying he was looking forward to working together to strengthen the bilateral ties between the two countries.

“Warm Congratulations to Mr. Luis Montenegro on being sworn in as the Prime Minister of the Portuguese Republic. Look forward to working together to further strengthen our long-standing bilateral ties,” PM Modi posted from his official X handle on Wednesday.

Portugal’s new centre-right minority government led by Montenegro came to power amid uncertainty around its long-term viability as it faces a highly fragmented parliament, Al Jazeera reported earlier.

The Democratic Alliance (AD) coalition won the March 10 election by a slim margin over the outgoing Socialist Party (PS).

Montenegro said on Tuesday the government was determined to meet its four-and-a-half-year mandate, promising to act with “humility, patriotic spirit and capacity for dialogue”, while demanding the same from the opposition.

“The [expected] investiture in parliament [next week] can only mean the opposition will respect the principle of letting us work and execute the government’s programme,” he said.

With just 80 seats in the 230-seat legislature, the AD will need the support of either the far-right Chega party, which quadrupled its parliamentary representation to 50 members of parliament, or the centre-left PS, which secured 78 seats, to pass legislation, Al Jazeera reported.

Chega, an anti-immigration party whose fast rise reflects a political tilt towards right-wing populism across Europe, has demanded a government role or a long-term agreement to support the AD, but Montenegro has repeatedly refused to negotiate.

Montenegro’s precarious position was exposed last week when Chega rejected his candidate for parliamentary speaker, who was ultimately elected with PS help. The PS warned, however, that such support was a one-off to unblock parliamentary activities.

Portugal, a country of 10.3 million people, is receiving more than 22 billion euros ($23.6bn) through 2026 from the EU to fuel growth and enable economic reforms.

The government has promised tax reductions for families and companies and higher pensions.

Al Jazeera reported that it has also promised to quickly address shortcomings in public healthcare, especially long waiting lists for treatment, and a housing crisis, as well as resolve simmering disputes with police and teachers over pay and work conditions.

The government can push some of its agenda through parliament with opposition support but the key piece of legislation–and its first big test–will be the 2025 budget.

Failure to approve a budget has in the past habitually resulted in early elections in Portugal, and it is likely that the AD will be forced to negotiate the spending plan, and possibly other measures, with the PS.

“The PS … must be clear about its attitude: be a democratic opposition or a blockade,” Montenegro said. (ANI)

Political Turmoil in Portugal

The House approved the 2024 budget bill on first reading on October 31 and the final vote is due on November 29…reports Asian Lite News

Portugal’s President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has announced snap parliamentary elections for March 10, 2024, following Tuesday’s resignation of Prime Minister Antonio Costa, who is under corruption investigation.

In a televised national address after a meeting with the Council of State, Rebelo de Sousa said on Thursday that the call for early elections comes from the need for “clarity and direction to overcome an unexpected void that surprised the Portuguese”.

The President added that he will dissolve the parliament and call early legislative elections, but with “the guarantee of the indispensable economic and social stability that is provided by the prior vote on the Budget of the State for 2024”.

The House approved the 2024 budget bill on first reading on October 31 and the final vote is due on November 29, Xinhua news agency reported.

He thanked Costa for “his service to the public cause” and said he hoped that “time would allow for clarification of what happened,” referring to the accusations against the former Prime Minister.

“The approval of the budget will allow us to meet the expectations of many Portuguese citizens and to keep up with the implementation of the Recovery and Resilience Plan, which does not stop and cannot stop with the transition from one government to a caretaker government or later with the dissolution of Parliament,” he added.

This week, the Public Prosecutor’s Office revealed its investigation into Costa for alleged corruption in lithium and hydrogen exploitation contracts, leading to Costa’s resignation and the indictment of nine suspects, five of whom have been detained.

Portugal PM resigns over corruption scandal

Infrastructure Minister Joao Galamba, and the President of the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA), Nuno Lacasta, were also named as formal suspects…reports Asian Lite News

Antonio Costa, prime minister of Portugal, resigned on Tuesday afternoon after becoming the target of an investigation into alleged government corruption.

Costa submitted his resignation to President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa earlier in the day. In a statement, Costa denied corruption accusations but said he preferred to step down to focus on his defense.

The country’s attorney general (AG) has already announced that a criminal case will be filed against Costa. The AG was also received by the Portuguese president, who was informed about the search operations that resulted in the arrest of five people, including Vitor Escaria, Costa’s chief of staff.

Infrastructure Minister Joao Galamba, and the President of the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA), Nuno Lacasta, were also named as formal suspects. According to the AG’s office, the inquiry focuses on the alleged crimes of prevarication, active and passive corruption, and influence peddling.

The investigation also focuses on lithium exploration concessions in Portugal, as well as a hydrogen energy production plant project.

WC for Portugal was most ambitious dream of my career’

“I fought for it. I fought hard for this dream,” said Ronaldo, who is currently without a club after leaving Manchester United by mutual consent in November…reports Asian Lite News

Cristiano Ronaldo has appeared to acknowledge that his dream of winning the World Cup with Portugal is over after the team’s elimination from football’s showpiece tournament in Qatar.

Portugal were denied a berth in the semifinals after they suffered a 1-0 quarterfinal loss to Morocco in Doha on Saturday.

“Winning a World Cup for Portugal was the biggest and most ambitious dream of my career,” Ronaldo said in an Instagram post on Sunday. “Fortunately, I won many titles of international dimension, including for Portugal, but putting the name of our country on the highest level in the world was my biggest dream.”

Ronaldo started on the bench for the second consecutive match at Al Thumama stadium after scoring just once — a penalty against Ghana — in four outings at this World Cup.

The defeat to Morocco was almost certainly the 37-year-old’s last appearance in football’s showpiece tournament. The former Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus star cut a distraught figure as he walked off the pitch in tears immediately after the final whistle.

Ronaldo, who has been capped 195 times and scored a record 118 goals for his country, will be 41 when the next World Cup begins in the United States, Canada and Mexico, reports Xinhua.

“I fought for it. I fought hard for this dream,” said Ronaldo, who is currently without a club after leaving Manchester United by mutual consent in November.

“I’ve scored in five World Cups over 16 years, always alongside great players and supported by millions of Portuguese people, I gave my all. I left everything on the pitch. I never turned my back on the fight and I never gave up on that dream.

“Unfortunately, yesterday the dream ended. I just want everyone to know that much has been said, much has been written, much has been speculated, but my dedication to Portugal has not changed for an instant. I was always one more person fighting for everyone’s goal and I would never turn my back on my teammates and my country.

“For now, there’s not much more to say. Thank you, Portugal. Thank you, Qatar. The dream was beautiful while it lasted…Now, I hope that time can offer the best advice and allow everyone to draw their own conclusions.”

Morocco Shock Portugal 1-0 to Reach WC Semi-Finals

Morocco becomes the first African nation to qualify for the last four after leading Portugal 1-0 in the quarterfinal of the World Cup at the Al Thumama stadium on Saturday.

A resilient Morocco found the back of the net through Youssef El-Nesyri in the 42nd minute. The forward went airborne and headed the cross from Attiyat Allah to give his side the advantage. Morocco took the lead thanks to a stunning Nesyri header, and are only 45 minutes away from making history. Portugal had a couple of chances and Bruno Fernandes almost equalized in the dying minutes of the half but his kick hit the crossbar.

Portugal’s penalty claim was disallowed shortly after Morocco found the lead. The game sprang to life in the closing five minutes of the first half, and everything is on the line in the second half.

The sides met only for the third time with Morocco edging Portugal in the 1986 World Cup while the European side took the honours in the second meeting through Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal in the 2018 edition.

Portugal started the game by keeping the ball in the Moroccan half and asserting dominance right from the beginning but Morocco showed resilience in defence and looked to make the most of their attacking chances.

The European side were relentless in their attack but the African nation was up to the task as they forged a solid defensive line to stop the Portuguese wave of attack.

Hakim Ziyech, Morocco’s most impressive player in the tournament, was once again a live wire in the field as he created chances for his team.

Portugal started without their talismanic striker Ronaldo and it will be interesting to see if he is brought onto the field as he was the difference between the two sides in their previous meeting. The forward will be itching to prove his mettle after having been left out of the starting eleven.

The stadium was engulfed with a sea of red and green as both the colours feature on the jerseys of Portugal and Morocco. (ANI)

Ramos hat-trick guides Portugal’s royal entry to quarter-finals

In the second half Portugal continued to draw Switzerland in circles and it took them six minutes into the second half to make it 3-0…reports Armstrong Vaz

A hat-trick from Benfica striker Goncalo Ramos helped Portugal to coast to an emphatic 6-1 win over Switzerland and set up a quarter-final clash with dark horses Morocco.

On Tuesday at Lusail Stadium in Qatar, the 21-year-old striker, who replaced Cristiano Ronaldo in the starting lineup, scored three decisive goals in the 17th, 51st and 67th minute to notch the first hat-trick of the tournament and to live up to the faith reposed by Portugal coach Fernando Santos.

Pepe, handed the captain’s armband in the absence of Ronaldo who was left on the bench by Santos, scored the second goal for Selecao das Quinas in the 33rd minute. Raphael Guerreiro was also on target for Portugal scoring the fourth goal for his team in the 55th minute.

Switzerland pulled one back in the 58th minute with Manuel Akanji scoring a consolation goal.

Thereafter, Portugal brought in Ronaldo in the 73rd minute as a substitute much to the roar of the crowd but he could not add his name on the scorers list, instead it was Rafael Leao, who added a sixth one in the injury stoppage time to complete a resounding win

Portugal meant business in the last 16 tie and the absence of Ronaldo in the starting eleven had no effect on the level of performance. Using the two defenders on the wings as an attacking option, Portugal took the attack into the rival camp and with Joao Felix serving as a perfect link between the defence and offense.

Felix, was not afraid to move deep in the Switzerland with his dribbling skills and also had the foresight to slice open the defence with his prodding runs in the rival half. He also fell back and also showed his defending skills along with his offensive ones.

The man was everywhere. He was orchestrating play from deep in the pitch, making darting runs in from the wings and has been dragging Swiss players out of position all night. They could not cope with his movement. Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva also pulled the strings in midfield and supplemented Felix’s work.

After much attacking play, Portugal opened the scoring with a gem of a goal from Ramos, who beat Switzerland keeper Yann Sommer with a thunderbolt. He received the ball with his back towards goal, took a touch to turn and let fly and it took off with incredible venom and flew into the top corner, 1-0.

Ramos, who had three international goals before going into the match having scored his first goal for his country in a November 17 friendly against Nigeria, where Portugal clinched a 4-0 win, scored with just 17 minutes on the pitch.

Ramos, who plays in the Portuguese Primeira Liga has been in terrific form this season, scoring 14 goals and six assists for his club this season across all competitions and is also the top scorer in the league, with nine goals in 11 appearances.

Portugal added a second one through 39-year-old Pepe, who finished off the set piece with a towering header from a corner taken by Bruno Fernandes to double the lead, 2-0.

In the second half Portugal continued to draw Switzerland in circles and it took them six minutes into the second half to make it 3-0.

Ramos, a product of Benfica’s youth academy, scored his second one of the night as he met a hard, low cross of Dalot and darted in to guide it at the far post for Portugal’s third, 3-0.

Defender Guerreiro, who time and again joined the attacking flock got his name on the goal scorers list, finishing off a move with another thunderbolt after set up by Ramos, 4-0.

Three minutes later, Akanji made it 5-1 pulling one back for the Swiss, tapping home a corner at the far post which travelled above everyone’s head and ended at the feet of the Swiss striker, 4-1.

Ramos added his personal third catching the Swiss defence napping as he latched on to a pass from Felix inside the box and chips over the onrushing Sommer to make it 5-1.

Leao completed the tally with an injury added goal for Portugal with another beauty of a goal, as he found space on the left wing, cut back and let fly from the corner of the box with Sommer only able to see it flyover him into goal.

Portugal take on Morocco in the quarter-finals on Saturday and join The Netherlands, Argentina, Brazil, France, England and Croatia in the last eight stage of the tournament.

India, Portugal hold consultations on migration of labourers

Between November 28 and December 2, IOM India and IOM Portugal carried out a scoping mission in New Delhi with an initiative to focus primarily on the labour demands…reports Asian Lite News

In bilateral consultations held recently, India and Portugal reviewed the mechanisms between Portuguese and Indian institutions responsible for facilitating international migration, and discussed advances in implementing the recently signed Bilateral Labour Mobility Agreement between the two countries.

The discussion, which was organised by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM-UN Migration) and the national offices of Portugal and India, took place on November 29, saw participation of a Portuguese delegation comprising representatives of various public and private sector partners.

Between November 28 and December 2, IOM India and IOM Portugal carried out a scoping mission in New Delhi with an initiative to focus primarily on the labour demands in the agricultural and hospitality sectors, aims to formulate a framework for subsequent labour migration schemes for Portugal, fostering safe and regular migration pathways for Indian workers, an official release stated, adding that the meeting addressed the multidimensional aspects of international migration and development and identified appropriate ways to maximize its development benefits.

Sharing his views, Anurag Bhushan, Joint Secretary, Overseas Indian Affairs-1, Ministry of External Affairs, said, “India has long been an important player in the international mobility of skilled professionals and students. It is one of the most sought-after source countries for highly skilled workers. The growing specialization of global labour markets means that as new industries and service activities emerge within the “new economy”, so will the need to source skills quickly and efficiently to allow for the development and expansion of cutting-edge sectors in the open labour market.”

The Portuguese delegation comprised representatives of the Portuguese Institute for Employment and Vocational Training (IEFP. I.P), the Algarve Tourism Region, the Association of Horticulturists, Floriculturists and Horticulturists of the Municipalities of Odemira and Aljezur (AHSA) and a representative from the private sector (Driscoll’s).

Together with IOM India, the delegation conducted successful meetings with the Portuguese embassy, the Ministry of External Affairs, the Protector General of Emigrants, the Skills Development and Technical Education Representative of the Punjab government, the Confederation of Indian Industries, Tourism and Hospitality Skill Council, the Agricultural Skills Council and recruitment agencies represented by the Indian Personnel Export Promotion Council.

Speaking on the bilateral dialogue, Sanjay Awasthi, head of office, IOM India, said, “It’s important for us to ensure an ecosystem for safe, orderly collectively and regular migration of Indian skilled professionals and students wherein the aspiring migrants have access to critical information, advice, and support at all stages of the migration process. IOM is committed to facilitating the development of policies and programmes in the interest of migrants and society, providing effective protection and assistance to migrants and their families.”

According to official statistics, the population of Indian citizens in Portugal is currently around 30,251. They are predominantly from Punjab (especially from Chandigarh, Amritsar, and Jalandhar). Most migrant workers from India are primarily engaged in the agriculture sector.

“This visit reinforces our understanding that there is interest from the Portuguese agricultural and tourism sectors in working with India to recruit Indian workers. IOM Portugal hopes that the recently signed agreement between the two countries for the recruitment of Indian citizens can reinforce safe and regular mobility between the two countries, underpinned by ethical recruitment principles”, the Head of Office from IOM Portugal, Vasco Malta, said.

IOM-UN Migration is committed to promoting a multi-stakeholder approach to migration management. It works with its partners to increase the benefits of migration for all stakeholders-countries of origin, countries of destination and migrants, with the goal of “leaving no migrant behind”.

Portugal joins Brazil, France into knockouts stage of World Cup

Portugal continued to dominate possession but could not create a clear-cut chance while Uruguay struggled to get any control of the ball…reports Asian Lite News

A brace from Bruno Fernandes helped Portugal to a 2-0 win over Uruguay and a place in the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup.

On Monday, in the last match of the day at Lusail Stadium in Qatar, Portugal’s second successive win took them to six points and to the top of the Group H standings leaving Uruguay, Ghana and South Korea to fight for the second qualification spot from the group.

Portugal joins Brazil and France, the other two teams which have made it to the knockout stage so far.

Portugal started well on the ball, enjoying the lion’s share of possession but Uruguay fashioned the best chance. Rodrigo Bentancur worked his way brilliantly through Portugal’s defence but squandering the game’s best chance in the 33rd minute, firing straight at Diogo Costa from a one-on-one situation.

At the other end Bruno worked hard, winning 100 per cent of his tackles, registering a 93 per cent pass accuracy rate and generally stringing play together for his side and with Joao Felix looking lively for Portugal on the left, Uruguay had a handful to deal with.

An attempt from distance from Joao flew wide but marked a warning shot for Uruguay, from the 23-year-old Atletico Madrid star.

Portugal continued to dominate possession but could not create a clear-cut chance while Uruguay struggled to get any control of the ball.

After a barren first half, Portugal coach Fernando Santos was hoping that his side could find a way to break the deadlock, and they did by scoring nine minutes into the second half through Bruno. The Manchester United striker added a second one in stoppage time of the second half.

Bruno’s first goal was initially credited to his former Manchester United teammate Cristiano Ronaldo but thereafter credited to Bruno.

In a breakthrough move Bruno’s cross was travelling towards the net, Ronaldo tried to produce a glancing header but did not make contact which ended up in the back of the nets after eluding Uruguay keeper Sergio Rochet’s reach. Ronaldo celebrated wildly, but Bruno was officially credited with the goal.

Uruguay down by a goal pressed the panic buttons and shifted gears during which period they came close to scoring a few times with one of their efforts hitting the metal work. Due credit to the Uruguay substite who changed the pace of the match. All of a sudden, Uruguay had just grabbed the bull by the horns and were taking the game to Portugal

And it was a stunning introduction from Maxi Gomez. After getting a pass on the edge of the box, his first time curled past a flinging Diogo Costa under the Portugal bar only to find the ball bounce off the right upright and away. That was the closest Uruguay came close to equalizing.

Portugal celebrated the goal with a second one through a controversial injury-time penalty which was awarded after VAR review.

Portugal had a penalty awarded after a VAR check. Jose Maria Gimenez handled as he fell backwards after being nutmegged by Bruno. Absolutely unintentional, but it has been given “The guy’s literally putting his hand down to cushion his fall” and it is not for the first time that VAR has been found wanting on penalties

With Ronaldo substituted, the trio of changes that coach Santos made pulling Ronaldo, Felix and Carvalho making way for Joao Palhinha, Goncalo Ramos and Matheus Nunes it was Bruno, who stepped up to take the spot kick, he made a little skip in the air and just waited for Sergio Rochet to fall to the left and just stroked it to the right. A really comfortable hit into the back of the net, 2-0.

Thereafter, Bruno had a chance to register his hat trick but his effort in the eight minute of stoppage time came off the metal work.

Former winners and hosts of the first edition of the football showpiece event Uruguay which drew with South Korea in their first match now have just a point from two matches and play their last match against Ghana. The African side earlier on Monday defeated South Korea 3-2 in a five-goal thriller.

The match saw five players aged 35 and above figuring in the game — Pepe (39), Cristiano Ronaldo (37), Diego Godin (36), Luis Suarez (35) and Edinson Cavani (35) — the most in a World Cup match in history.

Meanwhile in the second half, there was a pitch invader who ran on the pitch holding a rainbow flag.

His T-shirt had “Save Ukraine” written on one side and on the back were the words “Respect For Iranian Woman”.

Portugal get off to a winning start

Ronaldo scored from the spot 20 minutes into the second half thus becoming the first man to score in five World Cups….reports Asian Lite News

Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo put all the off-field worries surrounding Manchester United to rest as he scored an opening goal in the 3 2 win over Ghana in the Group H match at the Stadium 974 in Doha on Thursday evening.

After a barren first half, the second half produced five goals with Ronaldo opening the scoring for Selecao de Quinas.

Ronaldo scored from the spot 20 minutes into the second half thus becoming the first man to score in five World Cups.

The Ghanians refused to throw in the towel and bounced back with a goal from A. Ayew in the 73rd minute.

The joy was short lived as Felix got his name on the scorers’ list five minutes later giving Portugal the lead, making it 2-1.

Two minutes Portugal struck again this time Leao getting into the thick of action to make it 3 -1 and make it difficult for Ghana to make a late fightback.

The Africans, however, fought back scoring a goal with one minute left for the normal time through O. Bukari.

Earlier, in the first half Ronaldo’s goal was overuled. The star striker finished quite splendidly with the free kick taken by Bruno Fernandes but the referee blew the whistle to cancel out the goal, much to the protestations of the Portuguese faithful at the stadium.

The atmosphere was electric. All eyes were on one man. The man who doesn’t need any introduction. However bigger things were at play.

The crowd erupted as soon as the great man Cristiano Ronaldo took his first touch. Ghana on the other hand were looking to stay in shape and frustrate Portugal. Fernando Santos’ men were trying to play attacking football.

Bruno and Ronaldo’s combination play and Santos’s tactics were under scanner.

Ronaldo spearheaded Portugal’s attack alongside Joao Felix in their opening match while Danilo Pereira joined Ruben Dias in the centre of defence. In midfield, Santos chose an attacking formation with only Ruben Neves as an anchor.

Explore Portugal’s mouth-watering regional cuisine

UNESCO has designated the Mediterranean Diet as a World Heritage Site, and it is an integral aspect of Portuguese cuisine…reports Asian Lite News

There is no doubt that Portugal’s cuisine is as rich and diverse as its landscape, which is a major consideration when choosing a travel destination. World-class chefs and amazing restaurants can be found in Portugal. Around 27 Michelin starred restaurants are located there. The capital, Lisbon, is home to nine restaurants with Michelin stars. The capital city of Portugal boasts a large number of Michelin-starred eateries, which says a lot about the flourishing local food industry.

One of Portugal’s best-kept secrets is its food. Everybody’s palate will find something to enjoy in Portuguese cuisine. The sea is Portuguese cuisine’s most distinguishing ingredient. Portuguese olive oil is also of the highest calibre and is used in all dishes, including cod (for which there are allegedly 1,000 different recipes!)

UNESCO has designated the Mediterranean Diet as a World Heritage Site, and it is an integral aspect of Portuguese cuisine. It is based on plant-based foods, such as fresh and dried legumes (beans, chickpeas, broad beans, etc.), dried fruits, and nuts (walnuts, almonds, chestnuts, raisins, etc.), as well as olive oil as the primary source of fat and fish in place of red meat.

The appropriate wine is paired with each meal. Portugal has a long history with wine. The entire nation produces wines of exceptional quality that are renowned around the world and have earned several awards and distinctions in international contests. Additionally, wine is a great justification for exploring the local geology, history, and culture. Portugal’s wine trails provide some fantastic journeys to experience a pleasure that has been cultivated over time. Each wine, whether it comes from Port wine, the Douro, Alentejo, or Madeira, has a unique flavour.

The sweets from Portugal are exquisite. The pastel de nata (custard tart), another staple of Portuguese cuisine, is the consequence of the harmony of flavour, creaminess, and crispiness. It is necessary. It goes well with coffee, which we typically have as espresso.

The strong culinary ties Portuguese cuisine has with Indian cuisine are one of its best features. Indian eateries are extensively scattered across the country and are virtually everywhere.

You will undoubtedly need to extend your trip to Portugal in order to sample the mouth-watering regional cuisine because there is so much to see and do there.
