The President’s Bodyguard is the seniormost Regiment of the Indian Army. This Republic Day is special for this elite Regiment as the ‘Angrakshak’ has completed 250 years of service since its raising in 1773.

The two Presidents arrived at Kartavya Path in the ‘Traditional Buggy’, a practice which made a comeback after a gap of 40 years.

A few months after Indian troops and aircraft paraded in Paris for the 2023 Bastille Day, a 95-member marching contingent and a 33-member band contingent from France participated in the 75th Republic Day Parade in New Delhi today.

The French detachment marching is drawn exclusively from the French Foreign Legion, a well-known and unique corps strong of about 10000 men from all around the world, including India.

French President Emmanuel Macron is attending as a chief guest at India’s 75th Republic Day celebration.

This marks a unique reciprocal exchange following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to France on its National Day in July 2023.

This momentous visit by Macron culminates in the 25th-anniversary celebrations of the Strategic Partnership between India and France.

Macron was earlier welcomed in Jaipur on Thursday where he held a bilateral discussion with the Indian Prime Minister

“Taking India-France Strategic Partnership to greater heights! Productive discussions held between PM @narendramodi and President @EmmanuelMacron of France in Jaipur. The two leaders took stock of bilateral ties & exchanged perspectives on a wide-range of bilateral and global issues,” Ministry of External Affiars (MEA) Official Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal wrote on X.

PM Modi said that it is a matter of great pride that the French President will be taking part in the 75th Republic Day celebrations in New Delhi on Friday.

He said that Macron’s presence not only strengthens the ties between the two nations but also adds a significant chapter to “our shared history of friendship and collaboration.”

PM Modi and President Macron have engaged in a series of high-profile meetings throughout 2023, underscoring the strength and depth of the bilateral relationship.

Their interactions have spanned various global platforms, including the COP 28 Summit in Dubai, the G20 Leaders’ Summit, and the G7 Summit in Hiroshima. Notably, President Macron was also the Guest of Honour at the Bastille Day Celebrations in France in July 2023.

This is the sixth time (the highest for any country) a French leader is participating in India’s biggest ceremonial event.

This tradition began with President Jacques Chirac in 1976, followed by Valery Giscard d’Estaing in 1980, Nicolas Sarkozy in 2008, and Francois Hollande in 2016.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s last visit to France for Bastille Day in July 2023 was a spectacle of symbolism and substance. The visit showcased the strong bonds between the two nations, with a tri-service Indian armed forces contingent marching at Champs-Elysees and a spectacular flypast by Rafale jets. (ANI)

Two All-Women Marching Units in Republic Day

The contingent would include women Agniveer soldiers who would be from the Navy and Air Force…reports Asian Lite News

Two all-women contingents of the defence forces are scheduled to march at the Republic Day parade this year.

“One contingent, including 144 personnel, would have all women soldiers, including 60 from the Army and the remaining from the Indian Air Force and Indian Navy,” defence officials said here.

The contingent would include women Agniveer soldiers who would be from the Navy and Air Force.

Another all-women contingent would be from the Directorate General of the Armed Forces Medical Services which will include nurses of the military nursing services and they would be led by women doctors at the parade.

Promotion of Nari Shakti or strengthening women power in the defence forces has been one of the key focus areas of the Narendra Modi-led government at the centre.

All three forces have opened up multiple avenues for women soldiers and officers in the defence forces. While the Indian Air Force has allowed women as fighter pilots, the Navy has given the command of its warship for the first time to a lady officer.

The Indian Army has also allowed the entry of women officers and soldiers into almost all of its arms and services. The Force is also looking at the possibility of allowing women in other remaining arms and branches too.

Meanwhile, rehearsals for the 75th Republic Day parade kicked off here in the national capital. Security forces carried out the Republic Day parade rehearsals amid winter chill and foggy conditions this morning near India Gate and Kartavya Path.

Meanwhile, in the run-up to forthcoming Republic Day celebrations, Delhi Police and security agencies are organising mock drills at important vital installations as well as in market areas in order to augment anti-terrorism measures and sensitise the general public to remain alert.

Earlier on Thursday, Delhi Police East District executed a mock drill at V3S Mall Nirman Vihar for security preparedness.

Teams of Delhi Fire Service, Delhi Traffic Police, Bomb Squad, Dog Squad, Cats Ambulance, and SWAT Cammondos were also present there.

India will celebrate its 75th Republic Day on January 26, 2024, honouring the historic date when the country completed its transition towards becoming an independent republic after the Constitution came into effect.

The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, will be visiting India as the chief guest. (ANI)

Biden Unlikely to be Republic Day Chief Guest

An Indian national, along with an alleged Indian government staffer, faces charges for conspiring to kill Pannun in June 2023…reports Asian Lite News

US President Joe Biden is unlikely to attend India’s Republic Day celebrations as the Chief Guest next month, according to media reports.

New Delhi is also considering alternative dates for the QUAD Summit scheduled for January 2024, Hindustan Times reported, citing sources. With just over a month left for the Republic Day event, India faces the challenge of finding a replacement guest.

Biden’s visit was anticipated to be a significant event, following recent visits by top US officials like Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin for the ‘2+2’ ministerial dialogue. Additionally, US Principal Deputy NSA Jonathan Finer visited India last week, and FBI Director Christopher Wray is currently on a three-day visit to New Delhi.

The timing of Biden’s potential visit is noteworthy, coming shortly after the revelation that US law enforcement thwarted a conspiracy to assassinate Sikhs for Justice founder Pannun on US soil. An Indian national, along with an alleged Indian government staffer, faces charges for conspiring to kill Pannun in June 2023.

In May of this year, Prime Minister Modi had announced India’s hosting of the Quad leaders summit in 2024, initially expected to occur around January 27 if President Biden accepted the invitation. However, current sources indicate that the summit is likely to be rescheduled for the second half of 2024.

The Quad grouping traces its genesis to 2004 when the four countries – India, US, Australia and Japan – came together to coordinate relief operations in the aftermath of the tsunami.

In 2007, the group again met on the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) sidelines. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was the first to pitch the idea for the formation of Quad in 2007.

The Quad summit, which was hosted by Sydney this year in May, was cancelled after US President Biden withdrew from his visit due to ongoing debt limit talks in Washington.

However, the leaders of the alliance, later agreed that they would hold their summit in Hiroshima, alongside G7 to ensure that the four leaders could come together to mark the Quad’s progress over the past year.

Biden scrapped his planned trip to Sydney as well as a historic visit to Papua New Guinea.

The decision — which prompted Albanese to cancel the scheduled Quad summit — was seen as a self-inflicted blow to hopes of a more visible US presence in the Indo-Pacific amid its competition with China in the region.
