‘Initially Had Trouble Figuring Out His Process’

‘Sarfira’ is the Hindi remake of her own film ‘Soorarai Pottru’ which starred Tamil superstar Suriya…reports Asian Lite News

Director Sudha Kongara, who is awaiting the release of her upcoming movie ‘Sarfira’, has shared her experience of working with Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar in the film.

The director said that she and Akshay Kumar initially had creative differences while shooting for the film as the superstar has his own method which Sudha found difficult to work around.

‘Sarfira’ is the Hindi remake of her own film ‘Soorarai Pottru’ which starred Tamil superstar Suriya.

Talking about how the two superstars are different, Sudha told ‘Galatta Plus’, “Suriya is Suriya. I have known him for over 25 years, and it’s much easier to tell him what I want. It’s very friendly and casual. But with Akshay sir, it’s ‘sir’ first of all, and I was meeting this gentleman for the first time. Since I have no filters, it was almost similar.”

The director said that for the first six days, Akshay Kumar wasn’t happy. She said: “He was like, ‘What is this girl making me do all this rubbish?’ So then he and the producer spoke to me, and I said, ‘You do whatever you like to do, and I will tell you when it isn’t going right.”

She further mentioned that she also had to let go because she had created the perfect Maara (the protagonist) in her head, and she thought there could be nobody better than Suriya, and that’s how it had to be played.

She continued: “I soon realised that I was suffocating this actor who had his own method, so I had to let go. After six days, I showed him a cut of a particular scene, and the next day he came to me and said, ‘I have a way of performing. I have a way of doing things and a process, but this is the first time I am trying to understand what is going on in your head.”

“I am trying to give you that.’ I said, ‘Very good. I love it.’ From there, we made peace, and we had a wonderful time shooting with each other. I really enjoyed working with him. He keeps saying, ‘Isko toh filter he nahi hai (She doesn’t have a filter),” she added.

The trailer for Akshay Kumar’s upcoming film ‘Sarfira’ premiered on Tuesday, showcasing his portrayal of Veer Mhatre, a visionary determined to make air travel affordable for all Indians. The trailer blends drama and inspiration, highlighting Mhatre’s relentless quest to revolutionize the aviation industry and challenge the status quo.

The film is inspired by the life of G. R. Gopinath, the founder of the Indian low-cost airline Simplifly Deccan.

Gopinath served in the Indian Army as a captain and fought in the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971-1972. He co-founded Deccan Aviation, a charter helicopter service, with two friends from the Indian Air Force in 1997. In 2003, he founded Air Deccan, a low-cost airline that later merged with Kingfisher Airlines in 2007.

In the film, Akshay portrays G. R. Gopinath, a role originally played by Suriya in the Tamil film ‘Soorarai Pottru.’

The film reunites Akshay with senior actor Paresh Rawal, who plays the role of the owner of a premium aviation carrier.

The film also stars Radhika Madan, R. Sarath Kumar, and Seema Biswas.

Speaking about the film, Akshay shared: “This film is very close to my heart. ‘Sarfira’ is not just about reaching for the skies; it’s about breaking barriers, defying all odds, and believing in yourself when the world calls you crazy. This film, this role, is an opportunity of a lifetime for me, and I hope it inspires everyone who watches it to never give up on their dreams.”

The film is directed by Sudha Kongara, who is known for ‘Irudhi Suttru’ and the National Award-winning film ‘Soorarai Pottru’, which is the Tamil original for ‘Sarfira.’

Sudha Kongara shared, “‘Sarfira’ is a story that speaks to the dreamer in all of us. Working with such an incredible cast and bringing this inspiring story to life has been an incredible journey of a dream that I first saw in 2009. I hope the audience finds ‘Sarfira’ as motivating and uplifting as we did while making it.

Producer and actor Suriya added: “‘Safira’ is proof of the unfailing human spirit, which always triumphs in the end. I genuinely believe Sudha’s story will connect with the audience across the world, as it is a common man’s tale that will inspire us to follow our dreams. I’m glad that Jyotika and I could collaborate with Vikram and Akshay Sir and actors and technicians from the South and Hindi film industries. ‘Safira’ will definitely warm your hearts.”

Earlier Akshay Kumar unveiled the poster for his upcoming movie ‘Sarfira’ on Instagram, showcasing a rugged look with stubble and polygonal sunglasses as he gazes skyward with an aircraft reflected in his shades. The poster features the caption “Dream so big, they call you crazy.” Directed by Sudha Kongara, known for her National Award-winning film ‘Soorarai Pottru’, ‘Sarfira’ is a Hindi remake inspired by the life of G. R. Gopinath, founder of Simplifly Deccan. Set in the world of start-ups and aviation, the film also stars Paresh Rawal, Radhika Madan, and Seema Biswas in key roles.
