Attacking opener Prithvi Shaw was on Friday called up to the India T20I squad for the upcoming home series against New Zealand, while K.S. Bharat was named as wicketkeeper for the ODI squad.

As per a BCCI release, K.L. Rahul and Axar Patel are unavailable due to family commitments, with the selection committee naming Bharat and Shahbaz Ahmed as their replacements in the ODI squad.

Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya will continue to lead the T20I side which has a familiar group of players, who featured in the series against Sri Lanka. The senior duo of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma continue to be left out of the T20 setup and they will only be present in the ODI squad.

Sanju Samson, who got injured during the first T20I against Sri Lanka, remains on the sidelines and his replacement Jitesh Sharma has managed to hold onto his spot. But, Harshal Patel was left out and Kuldeep Yadav got picked in the T20I squad.

All-rounder Shardul Thakur, who didn’t feature in the series against Sri Lanka, has been called up to the ODI squad in place of pacer Arshdeep Singh.

Suryakumar closes in on all-time ICC T20I batting rankings

Unsurprisingly, he was the Player of the Match as India put on a colossal total of 228/5 and went on to register a massive 91-run win…reports Asian Lite News

Star India batter Suryakumar Yadav, who is making a habit out of breaking records, is inching closer towards the all-time ICC men’s T20I batting rankings, extending his lead on top of the table from 883 rating points to 908 in the latest update on Wednesday.

Following up his 36-ball 51 in the second T20I, Surya blasted a majestic century — his third in six months — in the series decider in Rajkot recently. The 51-ball 112 not out was laced with seven fours and nine sixes, not sparing an inch of the stadium with his sublime 360-degree hitting.

Unsurprisingly, he was the Player of the Match as India put on a colossal total of 228/5 and went on to register a massive 91-run win.

His stunning returns in both games puts him second in the all-time T20I batters bankings, just seven rating points behind England’s Dawid Malan (915). Suryakumar was placed fifth in the all-time list during the previous update of the rankings but has now leapfrogged Babar Azam (896), Virat Kohli (897) and Aaron Finch (900) over the last week, as per ICC.

The right-hander batter had to wait for a long time for the India cap, making his T20I debut after turning 30. But there has been no stopping him ever since as he has gone to rack up runs consistently at a rate not seen before. In 45 T20Is, Surya has accumulated 1578 runs at a phenomenal strike rate of 180.34, the highest for any batter with more than 250 T20I runs.

In the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022, he finished as the third-highest run-getter with 239 runs in six matches while striking at an eye-watering 189.68.

All three of his fifties — against South Africa, Zimbabwe and Netherlands — proved to be crucial knocks under the circumstances and in the case of the latter two, turned the tide in favour of India.

Suryakumar will not have to wait for too long to gun for Malan’s record as New Zealand are set to travel to India for a white ball tour consisting of three ODIs and three T20Is later this month. The T20I series will kick off on January 27 in Ranchi and good returns against the fifth-placed Kiwis could see Surya break yet another record, something he has made a habit of.

Hitman completes 12 years with Mumbai Indians

India captain Rohit Sharma is also the highest-capped player for Mumbai and has the second-most number of wins in the IPL as captain…reports Asian Lite News

India captain Rohit Sharma reflected on completing 12 years with Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL), saying that the journey has been an extremely exciting and emotional one for him.

On January 8, 2011, at the first IPL mega auction in Bengaluru, Mumbai, Punjab Kings and Deccan Chargers, Rohit’s previous team in the IPL from 2008-10 were in a three-way fight to get the services of the right-handed opener.

Eventually, Mumbai got him in and since then, Rohit has been their talismanic batter who has captained them to five IPL triumphs (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020) and two trophies in the now-defunct Champions League T20 (2011 and 2013).

“I can’t believe it’s been 12 years at Mumbai Indians. It has been an extremely exciting and emotional journey for me. We’ve achieved so much together with stalwarts, youngsters and our Paltan.”

“Mumbai Indians is my family and I want to thank my fellow players, fans and management for all the love. Looking forward to creating many more memories and spreading more smiles for our Paltan,” said Sharma in an official statement by the franchise.

Rohit also won the Player of the Match award in the 2015 IPL final with a 26-ball half-century to propel the side towards a massive total against Chennai Super Kings. He is also MI’s highest run-scorer with 4982 runs (IPL + CL T20 statistics combined).

He is also the highest-capped player for Mumbai and has the second-most number of wins in the IPL as captain (81 wins out of 143 games). But after missing the playoffs in 2021, Mumbai had a disappointing last-place finish in the 10-team event in IPL 2022, winning just four out of 14 matches in the league stage.

On the international front, Rohit’s first appearance of 2023 as the skipper of the Indian team will come in the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka, when the first match will be played on January 10 in Guwahati, followed by games in Kolkata and Thiruvananthapuram on January 12 and 15 respectively.

Axar, Suryakumar fifties in vain as Lanka beat India

Chasing a big target, Axar Patel and Suryakumar Yadav rescued India from a precarious 34/5 to help them make a match of it before they fell short…reports Asian Lite News

In a match of fluctuating fortunes, India’s Axar Patel and Suryakumar matched Sri Lanka’s Kusal Mendis and Dasun Shanaka fifties for fifties but in the end the hosts fell short by 16 runs in the second T20I at the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium, here on Thursday.

With the bat dominating the ball on a true pitch on which bowlers were rewarded for putting in extra effort, Shanaka hammered 56 off 22 deliveries after Mendis had blazed away to 52 off 31 as Sri Lankans capitalising on wayward and ineffective Indian bowling to post 206/6 in 20 overs after being asked to bat first by Hardik Pandya who won the toss.

Chasing a big target, Axar Patel and Suryakumar Yadav rescued India from a precarious 34/5 to help them make a match of it before they fell short. Axar came up with sensational batting, blasting a half-century in 20 balls while Yadav scored 51 off 33 deliveries as India came roaring back from 57/5 to reach 148/5 when Suryakumar got out. And though Axar Patel and Shivam Mavi struck some lusty blows and took India from 57 off 24 balls to 20 off six, in the end the target proved too far.

Axar Patel hammered six sixes and two boundaries in his brilliant 31-ball 65 and Suryakumar and Mavi (26 off 15) dragged India from a precarious position to 20 off the last six deliveries. But in the end, the task was too stiff for the Gujarat batter who played some sensational shots including three sixes off successive deliveries in the 14th over. Dasun Shanaka got him out in the final over as India’s hopes ended.

Suryakumar, who survived a clear run-out chance, brought out his customary 360-degree play and after Deepak Hooda was out for 9, found an able ally in Axar as they brought up the hundred of the innings. Patel hammered Wanindu Hasaranga for a hat-trick of sixes in the 14th over and with Suryakumar Yadav helping himself to a six, the over cost Sri Lanka 26 runs. They creamed 15 runs off the next over — thus ending up hitting six sixes in two overs as Axar Patel blazed his way to a half-century off 20 balls, hitting two fours and 6 sixes.

India had lost Ishan Kishan, Shubman Gill and Rahul Tripathi early and when skipper Pandya was out for 12 runs followed by Deepak Hooda for 9, it seemed their chase would fizzle out.

The Sri Lankan bowlers started brilliantly but lost their way in the middle overs when Yadav and Patel went hammer and tongs, taking off 41 runs off 12 balls (14th and 15th overs), They, however, regrouped and clawed their way back to victory.

The Indian bowlers started poorly with Arshdeep Singh sending down three wides to concede 17 runs in the second over, Mendis blasting him for two fours and a six. Spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Axar Patel pulled them back into the game along with Umran Malik, who claimed two wickets off successive deliveries before the pacers again allowed Shanaka to take charge. Arshdeep sent five no-balls in all, conceding 37 runs in two overs as Shanaka unleashed some sensational shots to take his team to a big total.

Earlier, after a quiet first over sent down by Hardik Pandya, Arshdeep bowled a wild one, with three no-balls, and was carted around by Kusal Mendis for a four and six, conceding 19 runs in the over.

Mendis top-edged Pandya for a six over deep third-man, and treated himself to a four straight down the ground off a no-ball by Shivam Mavi, who was brought in as Arshdeep was struggling with his run-up. Sri Lanka were 55/0 at the end of the Power-play,

Mendis continued in the same vein. He first drove Mavi for a four past mid-on and then slog-swept Axar Patel for a maximum over deep mid-wicket. Another six off Umran Mailk helped him bring his half-century off just 27 deliveries.

But India pulled back things a bit and Yuzvendra Chahal gave them the much-needed breakthrough when he caught Mendis (52, 31b, 3×4, 4×6) LBW with a slider that cramped the batter for space. The field umpire was unmoved but the DRS ruled in favour of the bowler.

Umran Malik castled Bhanuka Rajapaksa (2) with a 147-kph thunderbolt and when debutant Rahul Tripathi brilliantly caught Nissanka near the boundary rope off Axar Patel, Sri Lanka were 96/3 in the 12th over.

Charith Asalanka blasted back-to-back sixes off Chahal over deep-midwicket as Chahal continued to struggle and dropped short. He hammered Umran Malik to a six in the same area but the young J&K tearaway had the last laugh as he got Asalanka (37 off 19 balls) caught by Shubman Gill at deep midwicket boundary as the batter backed away attempting to smack him over the rope,

Malik was on fire and uprooted the stumps with a 140kph delivery to send Wanindu Hasaranga back for wickets off successive balls.

Brief scores:

Sri Lanka 206/6 in 20 overs (Dasun Shanaka 56 not out,Kusal Mendis 52, Charith Asalanka 37, Pathum Nissanka 33; Umran Malik 3-48, Axar Patel 2-24) beat India 190/8 in 20 overs (Axar Patel 65,Suryakumar Yadav 51, Shivam Mavi 26; Dasun Shanaka 2-4, Kasun Rajitha 2-22, Dilshan Madushanka 2-45) by 16 runs

Hardik Pandya reveals his ‘biggest’ NY resolution

Following India’s shock exit in the 2021 T20 World Cup, Pandya was out of action because of a back injury till the 2022 IPL season…reports Asian Lite News

India T20 captain Hardik Pandya on Monday revealed that his biggest New Year’s resolution is to win the ODI World Cup that the country will be hosting in October-November this year.

Pandya, who is leading India in three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka in the absence of regular skipper Rohit Sharma, will play the ODI series under the regular skipper and the all-rounder said there can not be a bigger resolution than winning the World Cup. India last won the World Cup at home in 2011.

“The biggest is to win the world cup. I don’t think there could be any bigger resolution. Really want to win the World Cup for which we will try everything possible in our hands to go out and give our everything. I think things are looking bright and let’s hope it is,” Pandya told the media on the eve of the first T20I against Sri Lanka on Monday.

One of the reasons that Pandya could dream big is his brilliant performance in recent times. Following India’s shock exit in the 2021 T20 World Cup, Pandya was out of action because of a back injury till the 2022 IPL season.

The star India allrounder made a memorable comeback by leading debutants Gujarat Titans to the IPL title and has had some superb scores since his return to action, including in the 2022 T20 World Cup.

Pandya the year 2022 was magical for him as he fought his way back from injury.

“One year back things were quite different when I went out of the sport that was my call to go out and spend some time and get better at it. It [2022] has been a magical year for me,” he said. “Obviously, would have liked [to win] the [2022 T20] World Cup also but that is part and parcel of the game, we tried but it did not happen. Going forward, what do I want to achieve? There is a lot to achieve. I have not achieved anything.

“So I am looking forward to the future. There are World Cups coming. There are going to be multiple World Cups in multiple years so the goal will always be to win a World Cup and I think, from now onwards, the goal will be to win the World Cup,” said Pandya.

One major concern for Pandya’s fans has been his bowling as the allrounder has not yet returned to his best with the ball. Pandya said he will work hard towards getting his bowling mojo back.

“I know the language of hard work, I don’t know any other language in my life. I have been thrown here, there and the only thing that has brought me back is my hard work. So, how I am gonna manage? it’s through hard work.

“I am going to keep working hard and make sure I look after my body, which I do. Injuries are part of the game and I can’t change that. But I am very confident about everything that I have done and I believe in the processes which have got me here,” he said.

T20 WC: India thrash Zimbabwe, set up semifinal showdown with England

It meant India finished on top of Group 2 and will meet England in the second semifinal at Adelaide on November 10, while Pakistan will face-off against New Zealand in the first semifinal on November 9….reports Asian Lite News

India set up a semifinal showdown with England in the Mens T20 World Cup after a 71-run thrashing of Zimbabwe in their final Group 2 match in the Super 12 stage at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday.

After Rahul gave India a good start with his 35-ball 51 and Suryakumar Yadav smacked a whirlwind 61 not out off just 25 balls in posting a mammoth 186/5, the bowlers made short work of the Zimbabwe batters to bowl them out for 115 in 17.2 overs.

It meant India finished on top of Group 2 and will meet England in the second semifinal at Adelaide on November 10, while Pakistan will face-off against New Zealand in the first semifinal on November 9.

In defence of 186, India had success on the very first ball as Wesley Madhevere tried to reach out for a drive on a swinging-away delivery from Bhuvneshwar Kumar, but was caught by a diving short cover.

In the next over, Arshdeep Singh lured Regis Chakabva for a drive, but the late swing in off a fuller length meant the ball went through the gate to hit the stumps. With Bhuvneshwar and Arshdeep getting the new ball to swing, it made life difficult for Zimbabwe till captain Craig Ervine took a four each of them.

After hooking Mohammed Shami for a six over fine-leg, Williams swung away from the body and was caught at the third man on the last ball of Power-play. Post-Powerplay, Ervine chipped in the air off Hardik Pandya and was caught by the bowler off his right hand. In the next over, Shami struck again by trapping Tony Munyonga plumb lbw.

Ryan Burl was impressive with his sweep and reverse-sweeps, one of which got him a six off Ravichandran Ashwin apart from smashing anything with width for boundaries off the off-spinner, Pandya and Axar Patel.

But Ashwin struck to break the 60-run partnership, forcing Burl to go for an on-drive on a fuller ball and rattled the stumps. He then took out Wellington Masakadza and Richard Ngarava in quick succession to bag a three-fer. Raza holed out on a pull in the deep off Pandya while Tendai Chatara gave Axar Patel a simple catch off his bowling to give India a huge win.

Brief scores: India 186/5 in 20 overs (Suryakumar Yadav 61 not out, K.L Rahul 51; Sean Williams 2-9, Sikandar Raza 1-18) beat Zimbabwe (Ryan Burl 35, Sikandar Raza 34; Ravichandran Ashwin 3-22, Mohammed Shami 2-14) by 71 runs

Kohli praises Ashwin’s bravery

The Man of the Match Kohli praised Ashwin for leaving a delivery bowled by Pakistan’s Muhammad Nawaz in the last over, which went on to be declared wide…reports Asian Lite News

India started their campaign in the Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 in a very impressive manner by registering a 4-wicket win against arch-rivals Pakistan in Melbourne on Sunday. In this spectacular albeit full-of-drama match, Virat Kohli played one of his best innings, scoring an unbeaten 82 runs off 53 balls to help India win off the last ball of the game.

However, it seemed the match had gone out of the hands for India when seasoned Dinesh Karthik got stumped out in the penultimate delivery of the match. Ravichandran Ashwin came in when India needed 2 runs off the last ball to win this match. The spinner did not succumb to a rush of blood and used his brain brilliantly to pull the match into India’s lap.

The Man of the Match Kohli praised Ashwin for leaving a delivery bowled by Pakistan’s Muhammad Nawaz in the last over, which went on to be declared wide.

From India needing 5 runs to win in three balls before that delivery was bowled, the equation came down to 2 needed in as many deliveries. While Karthik was stumped out on the next delivery, Ashwin kept his nerve to guide India to victory with a lofted shot over mid-off on the last ball.

“I told Ashwin to hit…ball over covers. But Ash…usne dimaag ke upar extra dimag lagaya. That was a brave thing for him to do…The ball came inside the line and he turned it into wide,” Kohli said.

Kohli said this was his best innings in T20 cricket considering the situation it came in.

“Till today I have always said Mohali was my best innings, against Australia: I got 82 off 52 (51 balls). Today I got 82 off 53. So they are exactly the same innings, but I think today I will count this one higher because of the magnitude of the game and what the situation was,” he said.

Kohli thanked his fans for their support during his difficult times.

“You guys have supported me, shown me so much love and support for all these months that I was kind of struggling, you guys kept backing me. And I am very grateful for your support. Thank you,” said Kohli in the post-match presentation ceremony on Sunday.

Sindhu, S Praneeth, P Kashyap enter second round in Malaysia Masters

Top Indian shuttlers — P.V Sindhu, B Sai Praneeth and Parupalli Kashyap — advanced to the second round while compatriot Saina Nehwal made a first-round exit at the Malaysia Masters 2022, here on Wednesday.

Former world champion Sindhu advanced to the second round women’s singles event after a hard-fought 21-13, 17-21, 21-15 win over China’s He Bing Jiao in 56 minutes at the Axiata Arena.

Sindhu, who had lost to He Bing Jiao in the first round of the Indonesia Open last month, dominated the early exchanges to build a massive 11-3 lead heading into the first break. The Indian player then controlled the game to take a 1-0 lead.

After the change of ends, Jiao led the two-time Olympic medallist Sindhu 11-7 at the break. The Indian ace, with a four-point streak, levelled the game at 11-all but He Bing Jiao regrouped quickly and stretched the match into the decider.

The third game saw both shuttlers engage in long rallies. After the scores were tied at 3-all, World No. 7 Sindhu struck 10 points on the trot and weathered a late comeback to progress into the second round of the BWF Super 500 badminton tournament.

This was Sindhu’s ninth win over the world No. 9 He Bing Jiao in 19 games. P.V. Sindhu also defeated He Bing Jiao on her way to the Tokyo Olympics bronze medal last year. In the second round, the Indian shuttler will face the winner of the match between world No. 47 Putri Kusuma Wardani of Indonesia and world bronze medallist Zhang Yi Man of China.

However, London Olympics bronze medallist Saina went down 21-16, 17-21, 14-21 to Kim Ga Eun of South Korea. The 32-year-old had also made a first-round exit from the Malaysia Open Super 750 tournament last week.

England smash records in seven-wicket victory against India

England Test skipper Ben Stokes has indicated that England probably won the Test against India in the third innings when they restricted the tourists’ lead to below 400 in the rescheduled fifth Test at Edgbaston.

The all-rounder also indicated that the Jasprit Bumrah-led side was quite clueless in the sense that they did not know what they had to do batting in the second innings after taking a handsome first-innings lead.

“Look at how teams will be viewing us at the moment, that third innings now has become a fourth innings, because they have to concentrate on how we’re going to play, and they’re worried about that,” Stokes said following the seven-wicket victory.

“So to be in that position as a team, being feared before they’ve even finished their innings is an unbelievable place to be in. Teams don’t know how to play the third innings (against England), especially when they’ve got a lead,” he added.

The England skipper won the toss against India but elected to bowl first knowing that his side had successfully chased fourth-innings targets of 299, 296 and 277 in the three Tests against New Zealand last month.

India set a target of 378 in Edgbaston which England cruised to for the loss of three wickets as former skipper Joe Root (142 not out) and Jonny Bairstow (114 not out) guided them home with an unbroken 269-run stand.

With a newfound confidence in batting fourth, England have chased down big targets in each of the four Tests they have played since Stokes took over the leadership role from Root. Under Root’s stewardship, England had won just one of 17 Tests and plummeted to the bottom of the ICC World Test Championship standings.

Four consecutive win have pushed England two places higher to seventh. “We are trying to rewrite how Test cricket is being played, in England especially. All the different plans that we put together over the last four or five weeks, for every different situation is something we’ll look to carry forward.

“It’s not always about bowling top of off or drying up, it’s how are we going to take wickets? That’s what you need to do as a bowling attack, take 10 wickets,” he added.

ALSO READ:Women’s Hockey World Cup: India Draw 1-1 With China

England will now move to a limited-overs series at home with three T20Is and three ODIs against both India and South Africa. They will then look to continue their superb white-ball and Test form in a three-Test series against South Africa that starts on August 17 with a clash at Lord’s.

“We know that we want to give new life to Test cricket, and the way that we go about it, and the support that we’ve received over the last five weeks has been incredible. It’s amazing, in such a short space of time, we feel like we are bringing a new set of fans to the game.

“Inspiring the next generation is what we want to do, this game at the moment is bigger than results for us, it’s about people who come in to represent England in the future, guys who come into the dressing room after. We want to leave a mark on Test cricket,” added Stokes.

India play out 1-1 draw against England

India and England lived up to the billing as they produced a high-voltage campaign opener in their Pool B match here at the FIH women’s hockey World Cup Spain and Netherlands in the packed Wenger Hockey Stadium, here on Sunday.

Goals were scored by Isabelle Petter (9′) and Vandana Katariya (28′) as they helped their respective teams add on a crucial point on the pool table.

However, India looked the better team on the pitch but wasted many chances, including six of the seven penalty corners they earned. With the other match in the four-team Pool B between China and New Zealand too ending in a draw (2-2), all teams in this tough Pool have a point each.

Both India and England got off to a rollicking start pushing each other for ball possession and creating space in each other’s circle.

England, who had beaten India for the bronze medal at Tokyo Olympic Games. got the first chance when their striker took a fierce shot on goal but an alert Savita averted early danger with a diving save only minutes into the first quarter.

But England were successful in their second attempt when their experienced player Lily Owsley with a total of 182 international caps, set up Isabelle Petter with a fine assist. Petter sent the ball high, pocketing the top of the net to fetch England that much-needed 1-0 lead in the 9th minute to put pressure on India.

Determined to stay on par with England in the game, India kept their calm and worked on their strategy to create chances in the circle. They were awarded a PC in the following minutes but were unlucky as Gurjit Kaur’s drag-flick bounced off the goal post.

Despite missing out on a goal, India remained patient in their approach, building on a good structure and when they were awarded a PC for a foot-foul in the 28th minute, experienced striker Vandana Katariya picked up a splendid rebound off England goalie Maddie Hinge’s pads after Monika had taken a shot from the PC. She deflected the ball perfectly past Hinge to earn India the equaliser and keep the game open in the second half of the match.

Coming back from the ten-minute break, feeling pumped up India upped the pressure on England with potent attacks. They played with speed and dominated the ball possession but England’s defence was rock solid with their experienced custodian Maddie Hinge up to the challenge, making some fine saves and guiding her team’s defence from the back.

With no goals scored in the third quarter, the match went down to the ire as both teams fought hard for that elusive lead. Though England created a couple of chances in the D with shots on goal, they were off target on most occasions.

India could have extended the lead in the 56th minute when Neha and Navjot worked inside the D to help Sharmila find a deflection. But Sharmila, unfortunately, could not get her stick on the ball, thus missing out on a great opportunity.

With less than four minutes for the final hooter, the game continued to remain tense when Monika won India’s seventh PC of the match. However, the team couldn’t make much out of the chance with the slow execution of the PC battery and once again England put up a fine defence with Hinge leading the charge.

A good video referral by India in the following minute ensured England were denied a PC. For the next few seconds, England dominated the ball but couldn’t make much of it, ending the match in a draw.

While they were profligate in attack, the Indian defenders had a good day in the office as they did not concede a single penalty corner in the entire match.

On July 5, India will take on China in their second Pool B match.
