The trio is put in a quandary. Will they fight their own creation? Is their intractable minds an indication that atheism is a religion in itself? Belief and disbelief, it is possible, are two sides of the same coin…reports Asian Lite News
Don’t let the weather dampen your spirits and weigh you down, pick up one of these books and dive head first into a great read. Here’s our list for the month.
The Wait And Other Stories (From the 2022 Jnanpith Award winner): Damodar Mauzo
Publisher: Penguin India
A cab driver, who assumes the identity of whoever his clients want him to be, finds himself in a tricky situation with a passenger. A late-night call leads a doctor down a path of lust and desire, but with unexpected results. A writer acquaints himself with a thief who had broken into his house. A migrant worker falls in love but wonders how he can present himself as a suitor. A young man, having lost the love of his life, takes it upon himself to resolve another couple’s dilemmas.
Konkani writer Damodar Mauzo’s sometimes bizarre, sometimes tender stories, set largely in Goa, create a world far removed from the sun and sand and the holiday resorts. Here you find villagers facing moral choices, children waking up to the realities of adult lives, men who dwell on remorse, women who live a life of regret and communities whose bonds are growing tenuous in an age of religious polarization. Probing the deepest corners of the human psyche with tongue-in-cheek humour, Mauzo’s stories reveal the many threads that connect us to others and the ease with which they can be broken. Written in simple prose and yet layered in nuances, The Wait is a collection that brings to the anglophone world one of the doyens of Konkani literature.
Nireeswaran (Vayalar and Kerala Sahitya Akademi winner): V.J. James
Publisher: Penguin India
Is it possible for society to exist without religion? Nireeswaran, the most celebrated of Malayalam novelist V.J. James’ works, uses incisive humour and satire to question blind faith and give an insight into what true spirituality is.
Three atheists, Antony, Sahir, and Bhaskaran, embark on an elaborate prank to establish that God is nothing but a superstition. They install a mutilated idol of Nireeswaran, literally anti-god, to show people how hollow their religion is. Their plan starts turning awry when miracles start being attributed to Nireeswaran, a man waking up from coma after 24 years, a jobless man ineligible for government employment getting a contract, a prostitute turning into a saint-leading hordes to turn up to worship the fake deity.
The trio is put in a quandary. Will they fight their own creation? Is their intractable minds an indication that atheism is a religion in itself? Belief and disbelief, it is possible, are two sides of the same coin. I am Onir and I am gay : Onir with Irene Dhar Malik

Generation XL (Dr. Sanjay Borude)
Publisher: Penguin India
India has a paradox of malnourishment as well as morbid obesity. While children have fewer weight-related health and medical problems than adults, overweight children are at high risk of becoming overweight adolescents and adults, placing them at risk of developing chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes later in life. They are also more prone to develop stress, sadness, and low self-esteem.
The contributing factors could be many, besides genetic makeup and medical factors like hypothyroidism and Cushing’s Syndrome. Children today spend far more time on screens than playing games outdoors, more so in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. Energy-dense foods and drinks are more readily available now than before. Psychological factors like stress also lead to overeating and increase the risk for obesity in childhood.
The book is a comprehensive roadmap for prevention and management of childhood obesity by one of India’s top bariatric surgeons. With real life case studies and examples, the book helps parents and children chart a roadmap to recovery and a fitter, healthier life. Without corrective action, there could be serious implications for future generations. Open House with Piyush Pandey (Piyush Pandey)
Publisher: Penguin India
In Open House, Piyush Pandey takes the readers on a journey into his mind-his work, thoughts and experiences. He answers questions posed to him by people over the decades. Serious questions, incisive questions and frivolous questions. Is advertising a good career option? Should ad agencies work for political parties? Why does Ogilvy work for the BJP? Should citizens take the law into their own hands if they don’t like the advertising? Is Ogilvy a lala company? What is the future of advertising? Is Piyush Pandey too old to be in this business?
Honest, irreverent and informative, this is a roller-coaster ride with Piyush Pandey and Anant Rangaswami who has skilfully curated the book. With its practical wisdom and deep insights, Open House will both entertain and enlighten you.
Use 100 per cent Ultraviolet (UV) protection sunglasses. The harsh UV rays can damage your eye lens, cornea and even retina. So whenever you head out, make sure you put on your shades…reports Asian Lite News
If you believe that applying sunscreen will protect your skin from the harsh rays of the sun this summer, think again. Your eyes, too, require attention. UV rays are not only harmful to the skin, but they can also harm the eyes.
“UV exposure has been linked to the development of macular degeneration, cataracts, and other vision-loss problems,” says Dr Danish Iqbal, Senior Consultant, Sharp Sight Eye Hospitals.
If you have an existing eye condition, such as macular degeneration or cataracts, he recommends that you protect your eyes from the sun as much as possible during the summer.
Dr. Danish shares some simple tips that will protect your eyes in summer.
Wear sunglasses: Use 100 per cent Ultraviolet (UV) protection sunglasses. The harsh UV rays can damage your eye lens, cornea and even retina. So whenever you head out, make sure you put on your shades.
Splash clean water in the eyes: Your eyes are stressed throughout the day due to severe heat and exposure to the sun. Rinse your eye by splashing cold water on them periodically and drinking a lot of water. This will keep your eyes from becoming dry or puffy.
Do eye exercises: Eye exercises help us to reduce tiredness and improve the eye muscles. Exercising your eyes daily also improves your eyesight and reduces the risk of contracting diseases and infections.
Use cucumber slices: If you are suffering from red eyes in summer, apply slices of cucumber on your eyelids for 10 minutes before you sleep. Cucumber also helps remove tan from under the eyes and absorbs extra moisture.
Nourish it with eye drops: It’s always better to use some kind of eye drops to minimize pain or manage other eye problems. However, you should also consult a qualified ophthalmologist before choosing your eye drops.
Increase intake of green leafy vegetables: In the summer season, increase the intake of green leafy vegetables as they are rich in both lutein and zeaxanthin and are also a good source of eye-friendly vitamin C. Well-known leafy greens include spinach, kale, collards etc.
Sleep well: Your eyes heal themselves as you sleep. Insufficient sleep can lead to dry, itchy, or bloodshot eyes. Lack of proper sleep at night leads to fewer tears in the eye and it may open the door to eye infections.

This simple updo looks elegant while requiring little effort. Pull your hair back into a ponytail with an elastic, and make a space at the base of the pony to pull the ponytail through and add a twist to the hair…writes Olivia Sarkar
The sun has finally shown its face, and we’re eager to embrace our summer vibes. Though, in the blazing heat, no one needs a thick mop of hair around their neck, that’s why some low-maintenance summer hairstyles are a must to keep our hair looking great while also keeping us cool.
Plus, no matter how hot it gets, they’re quick, don’t require any heat, and remain out of your sweaty face. Here are some of our favourite summer hairstyles that will keep you looking cute while you’re out and about. High Pony
Brush your hair back and secure the elastic tightly for the perfect high pony. Add a bobby pin to the base of the ponytail, pointing up, to add volume.
Low Slicked-Back Twisted Bun
Pull all of your hair back into a low pony at the back of your head to achieve this sleek bun. Then, twist your hair clockwise all the way down and style it into the desired bun shape. You can make a classic bun shape.
Space Buns
Space buns are classic because they look chic and cool with very little effort. They are probably the easiest hairstyle out there. Simply create two small buns on either side of your head and secure them with an elastic or a bobby pin. This look works well whether it’s sleek or messy, making it as versatile as it is.
Braided Bun
This style gives your low messy buns a little something extra. Part your hair on the side and braid it from the crown of your head to the back, where you want the base of your bun to be. Then, using elastic and bobby pins, gather the rest of the hair into a messy bun. Sleek Low Pony With Accessory
Ponytails are popular because they can be styled in a variety of ways while remaining incredibly simple. Brush your hair back, removing any lumps or creases. At the nape of your neck, gather all of your hair and secure with an elastic. Complete the look with your favourite hair accessory. Messy Wrapped Ponytail
This ponytail looks great because it highlights any natural texture or leftover curls. Make a ponytail at the nape of your neck with your hair. To keep the pony in place, use an elastic. To hide the elastic, pull a small piece of hair from underneath the ponytail and wrap it around it. Pin the end of your hair to your head with a bobby pin.
Twisted Up-Do
This simple updo looks elegant while requiring little effort. Pull your hair back into a ponytail with an elastic, and make a space at the base of the pony to pull the ponytail through and add a twist to the hair.
Twisted Top Knot
A sleek top-knot is one of the most popular hairstyles because it looks put together and looks good on almost any hair type. Pull your hair to the top of your head with a brush, making sure to brush out any creases or bumps. Gather your hair into a ponytail and secure it with an elastic to keep it tight and in place. Then, twist your hair into a bun and pin it in place with bobby pins.
Outdoor activities should be limited to the cooler parts of the day, suchas early mornings before 11 a.m. or late evenings after 5 p.m…writes Olivia Sarkar
Want to keep healthy and avoid the scorching summer heat, which is a common concern at this time of year?
The summer heat is not only physically exhausting and uncomfortable, but it also puts us at risk for ailments like skin irritation, rashes, fever, dehydration, and food poisoning. While the summer heat is enjoyable, it is vital that we do not disregard our health. Extra care must be made to battle the heat and stay fit and healthy during this season.
Consume plenty of water: Summer heat and sweat can dehydrate your body, resulting in unfavourable health outcomes such as fever and chills. Drink at least 2 to 3 litres of water per day to keep yourself hydrated.
Takeprecautions to avoid heatstroke: Another major issue that older adults face during the hot summer months is heatstroke. The main reason that older adults are more vulnerable to this is that their bodies do not adjust to temperature changes as quickly. High fever, nausea, vomiting, headache, and dizziness are all common symptoms of heatstroke.
Light and comfortable attires: In the summer, it is best to dress in breathable and lightweight clothing to keep your body temperature regulated in the hot sun. Instead of heavy clothing, choose natural fabrics such as cotton and linen.
Indoor stays are best: Outdoor activities should be limited to the cooler parts of the day, such as early mornings before 11 a.m. or late evenings after 5 p.m.
Eat healthy and light: Consume small, frequent meals. Heavy meals with high carbohydrate and fat content generate a lot of heat in the body. Concentrate on fresh fruits and vegetables with high water content, such as oranges, watermelon, tomatoes, and so on.
Protect your eyes: Wear protective eyewear to protect your eyes from the harsh sunlight at work and at play. When going outside, wear sunglasses that block at least 99 per cent of UV rays.
Avoid Alcohol and Caffeine: Alcohol, fizzy drinks, and coffee can all dehydrate you quickly. If at all possible, try to limit your intake of these popular beverages, especially during hot weather. A good substitute is a plain or flavoured water.

Depending on your hunger levels, one can either go for buttermilk with a pinch of cumin powder and ginger or hing around midmorning time. You can also opt to have a bowl of salad at your convenience or even coconut water…Dr Manoj Kutteri
Unlike other times of the year, during the summer we naturally lose our appetite and need extra fluid to hydrate the body. It is common to resort to cooling drinks such as lime juice, Chaas, Nira water or something that we feel cooler.
It is extremely important for us to know this body language and get into a proper dietary habit so that we don’t tax our body even more and at the same time support our body’s tissues and cells with a nourishing diet to escape from the scorching heat. With a planned diet consisting of a range of refreshing drinks and fruit, we can cool down and face summer heat.
Consuming summer fruits and drinks is one of the easiest ways to lower the body heat and protect our body. The summer diet must also provide energy and help reduce tiredness and fatigue, something many of us experience during the summer season. Let the sun’s hotness be dealt with easily with a few of the following dietary tips.
Wake up routine
During summer, we tend to sleep under a fan or in an air-conditioned room. This can further dry up the skin and throat and when you wake up it is quite natural to feel the dryness of the throat, eye irritations or skin dryness. Start your morning with 2-3 glasses of water even. If required one can also use lime juice or cinnamon soaked in the water. Following this, a cooling drink is highly recommended like Ashguard juice with a few drops of lime and Amla juice. This is highly beneficial to health in keeping the blood glucose in check and also to regularize your weight. Ash gourd juice can be replaced by wheatgrass juice, moringa juice, celery and cucumber juice or even coconut water.
Breakfast during summer
It is important to consume at least 4-5 handfuls of fruits and vegetables during the day in summer. Breakfast should always start with a bowl of healthy seasonal fruits such as melons, papaya, mangoes, lychees, plums etc. Following this one can have either a miller porridge or smoothie bowl consisting of coconut milk along with sabja, seeds, chia seeds, buts and a few dry fruits. Dry breakfast such as bread or other fermented grain items can cause indigestion if eaten on a fresh stomach. Also, reduce the number of grains and other preparations for breakfast.
Midmorning boost
Depending on your hunger levels, one can either go for buttermilk with a pinch of cumin powder and ginger or hing around midmorning time. You can also opt to have a bowl of salad at your convenience or even coconut water.
Lunch options
The meal that you have at lunch also should have abundant vegetables. If you prefer to consume carbs this is the meal you can try adding carbs along with plenty of vegetables. Make it mandatory to include a soup for lunch. Reduce the macronutrients such as carbs, proteins and fats to only half of the lunch portion.
Sundown diet
Towards the evening, you may consider taking a bowl of summer fruits and can also include a few soaked nuts along with this. This can give you good energy towards the latter part of the day and prevent any form of fatigue or tiredness after a full day’s work.
Healthy Dinner
Night meals are better to be kept as light as possible. It is preferred to have a “Budha bowl” with lots of cooked vegetables sauteed, braised, grilled or boiled along with a protein option. Include a soup before the meals and a herbal tea post-dinner. Some of the great cooling teas are chamomile tea, hibiscus tea or even mint tea.
Hydration during the day
One has to consume at least 3-litres of water during the day to keep the body cool. Besides drinking water, herbal teas, soups, infused water etc are great ways to combat body heat. Water infused with vegetables like celery, parsley, lemon, orange, cucumber, kale etc is great during this time.
