WGES Explores Roadmap to a More Sustainable Future

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy (DSCE), and the World Green Economy Organisation (WGEO) organise the 9thWorld Green Economy Summit (WGES) at Madinat Jumeirah Conference Centre in Dubai with the theme ‘Bridging the Gap to the Future: Advancing the Global Green Economy’.

The summit will offer an active platform to discuss ways to enhance cooperation and joint efforts, create paths for exchanging expertise to bolster climate action and environmental initiatives, and accelerate the transition towards a green economy. The summit exemplifies the UAE’s leading position as a global hub for the green economy, innovation, and sustainable development. The summit is further committed to supporting and promoting international cooperation focused on tackling sustainability challenges.

“The UAE has adopted the green economy as one of the pillars of its new knowledge-based model, as part of the “We Are the Emirates 2031” vision, and as an essential axis in implementing the country’s sustainable development. Accelerating green growth represents an important path in the country’s economic journey and several ongoing initiatives to build a flexible and sustainable economic model for the future. Among these initiatives is the circular economy policy, which contributes to building an economic system that is more sustainable, rationalizes resources, and relies on clean energy, and less on waste, pollution, and carbon emissions,” said Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy.

“The 2023 edition of the Summit seeks to achieve various goals such as galvanising international efforts to mitigate climate change, sustainable development in key sectors such as energy, agriculture, and industry, raising awareness of the importance of the green economy and fostering green innovation, technology, and investments. Additionally, the global summit focuses on assessing previous progress and underscoring vital innovations from national institutions, civil organisations, and the private sector. It will also showcase futuristic and innovative solutions that have the potential to boost the transition towards a comprehensive green economic model,” said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, MD CEO of DEWA, and Chairman of WGEO.

‘’The summit also paves the way for COP28. The summit will explore priority areas and topics for COP28, particularly accelerating systematic, fair and responsible transformation in the energy sector and developing climate financing systems. It will also host sessions and discussions focusing on green policy, green finance, green technology and innovation, green energy, and green partnerships,” Al Tayer added.

As environmental and climate concerns surge alongside global economic and social repercussions, there is an urgency to forge international collaborations and multi-sector partnerships. These are cornerstones for achieving shared visions on approaches and methodologies to mitigate sustainability challenges that are driving the world to devise frameworks to ensure a prosperous future. In this regard, the vital role of sustainability-focused international conferences and forums cannot be overlooked. These events offer dynamic platforms for constructive discussions and sharing expertise, perspectives as well as developmental methodologies that guarantee unhindered growth of countries and economies while conserving natural resources and the environment, as well as addressing challenges such as carbon emissions.

‘Sustainability, equity in growth key to global peace’

He particularly stressed on financial and digital inclusion in today’s world for having peace and equitable growth…reports Asian Lite News

G20 Sherpa India and former NITI Aayog Chief Executive Officer Amitabh Kant has said peace and harmony in the world will only prevail when there is inclusiveness, sustainability, as well as equity in growth for all.

“We will have peace and harmony in the world only when there is, to my mind, there is inclusiveness, greater sustainability and there is equity in growth for everyone,” Kant said on Tuesday evening at a roundtable discussion session – Alternative Development Model (ADM) and Peace, organized by India Center Foundation. In that context, Kant mentioned that India values the voices of the south, and speaks for all developing countries, citing the example of Covid, whose spread he said in one part of the world has implications on other parts of the world.

He particularly stressed on financial and digital inclusion in today’s world for having peace and equitable growth.

“And lastly, we will not have peace and serenity and harmony in the world without a sustainable existence. The earth may survive but we will be extinct if we are not able to maintain 1.5 degree centrigrade (to mitigate global warming). Therefore, its totally incumbent upon all of us to think with a greater vision to work with the philosophy of ‘One Earth, One Family, and One Future’, because we may have different geographical boundaries, political ideologies, and perspectives, but at the end, we are part of one cosmos,” he added.

Interestingly, ‘One Earth, One Family, and One Future’ is the theme of India’s G20 Presidency. The theme of India’s G20 Presidency – “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” or “One Earth One Family One Future” – is drawn from the ancient Sanskrit text of the Maha Upanishad. Essentially, the theme affirms the value of all life – human, animal, plant, and microorganisms – and their interconnectedness on the planet Earth and in the wider universe.

Coming back to the event, the alternative development roundtable was a platform for knowledge-sharing and ideating new strategies for sustainable growth by adopting environment-friendly measures. The session brought together eminent individuals and organizations that have dedicated themselves to evolve new models of development and building peace in society.

“ADM is a groundbreaking model of strategies designed to overhaul and upgrade the development operating system that espouses non-exploitation of people, resources and environment at its core to create equitable opportunities through new types of economic entities,” said the Founding Chairman of India Center Foundation Vibhav Kant Upadhyay. Hamdan approves policies on sustainability

Hamdan stressed that Dubai leads global cities in promoting sustainable development focused on providing the highest levels of service for its citizens and residents….reports Asian Lite News

The Executive Council of Dubai, chaired by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, explored opportunities emerging in the circular economy and adopted a new Green Procurement Policy for Dubai government and a Shared Services function designed to enhance the efficiency of government services.

Sheikh Hamdan highlighted that the Year of Sustainability announced by Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, places greater responsibility on Dubai to support the environment.

“Today, the UAE has created the ideal conditions for promoting environmental protection and sustainability, guided by the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai,” Hamdan said.

“We have also developed an agile legislative framework that allows us to keep pace with new developments and changes in the environmental sphere. The leadership’s support has also enabled us to raise our position as a business and investment destination that is at the forefront of promoting sustainability, encouraging green projects, and embracing the concept of the circular economy.”

He said Dubai has taken initiatives to ensure it is at the forefront of global efforts to overcome the challenges of climate change.

“Dubai seeks to set an example for an environment and people-friendly city that is committed to preserving the planet for future generations. We aim to strike a balance between economic growth and sustainability, as the UAE prepares to host COP28,” he added.

Hamdan stressed that Dubai leads global cities in promoting sustainable development focused on providing the highest levels of service for its citizens and residents. Dubai also benchmarks itself with the best in the world to continuously enhance economic growth and the quality of life of its people.

He further said: “The government is not alone today in this journey. The private sector is a strategic partner that significantly contributes to Dubai’s efforts to build an environment-friendly city and create an attractive business destination. We are all working hand-in-hand to serve our society and advance inclusive and sustainable development.”

Circular Economy Opportunities

The Executive Council approved plans to take advantage of opportunities in the circular economy by reducing the total demand for consumables, and limiting the disposal of these materials so that they can be reused on a regular basis. In addition, the meeting explored how the environmental footprint of various industries and key sectors like construction, food, packaging, and waste management can be reduced.

These efforts will build on the significant progress Dubai has made in reducing its environmental footprint and contributing to the circular economy. Since 2012, the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority’s initiatives have helped raise the contribution of renewable energy sources to total production capacity to 9%.

The Dubai Supreme Council of Energy adopted the 2016-2021 Carbon Emissions Strategy to reduce emissions by 22%, and reduce energy and water consumption by 30%. In addition, the implementation of the single-use bag reduction policy was implemented in mid-2022, resulting in positive outcomes, apart from various other initiatives introduced by various government and private entities.

The Executive Council also approved the Green Procurement Policy, a key initiative to support the circular economy, which aims to stimulate the local supply chain, adopt more sustainable practices, broaden the use of sustainable materials, create a competitive environment, reduce the environmental footprint, and enhance financial efficiency, all of which will raise Dubai’s reputation as a city that uses its resources sustainably.
