Rohit Eyes ‘Something Special’ from Team India

India captain Rohit Sharma expressed his excitement and optimism as the team gears up for the Super Eight stage of the T20 World Cup 2024. Speaking ahead of their first match against Afghanistan, Rohit emphasised the team’s collective ambition to make a significant impact in the tournament.

India, having cruised through the group stage unbeaten, secured victories against Ireland, Pakistan, and the USA. Their final group-stage match against Canada was abandoned due to rain, leaving them at the top of Group A with an unblemished record.

The Indian team arrived in Barbados days ahead of their Super Eight opener to acclimate and focus on their preparations.

In a video released by the BCCI, Rohit highlighted the team’s eagerness to excel. “There is real keenness in the group to go and do something special. It clearly shows that everyone wants to make a difference and we take our skill sessions quite seriously. There is something to achieve in every skill session that you do.”

Acknowledging the challenges of the upcoming schedule, the Indian skipper noted the team’s readiness to tackle the demands of the Super 8 stage. “Once we play the first game, we are going to play the next two in 3-4 days. It is going to be a little hectic but we are used to all of this. We travel and play a lot so that is not going to be an excuse.”

Speaking on the importance of focusing on their skills and strategies, especially given their familiarity with the local conditions, Rohit said, “We will look to focus on our skill and what we need to do as a team. We have played a lot of games here. Everyone understands what they need to do. Everyone is looking forward and are excited at the same time.”

India’s Super Eight campaign kicks off on June 20 with a match against Afghanistan at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados. This will be followed by a clash against Bangladesh in Antigua two days later, and they will conclude the Super 8 stage with a match against Australia in St Lucia on June 24.

All matches are scheduled to start at 8 PM (IST).

June 20: India vs Afghanistan at Kensington Oval, Barbados

June 22: India vs Bangladesh at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, Antigua

June 24: India vs Australia at Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, St Lucia

Advance recce teams of G20 countries visit Delhi convention centre

With more than 12,300 delegates from over 110 nations, the in-person participation in India’s G20 Presidency is the largest ever hosted by any G20 country so far…reports Asian Lite News

The advance recce teams of the G20 countries visited the Bharat Mandapam convention centre in Delhi on Tuesday as detailed discussions were held on the logistical arrangements.

The G20 Summit which is set to take place next month in the national capital will have distinguished guests for the summit. Taking to Twitter, the Official Account of India’s G20 Presidency wrote, “G20 Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi taking concrete shape! Special briefings organised for Advance Teams from the #G20 and invitee countries & organizations at the iconic Bharat Mandapam.”

“Detailed discussions held on the logistical arrangements as New Delhi gears up to host the distinguished guests for the Summit. #G20India,” the tweet added.

The G20, or Group of Twenty, is an intergovernmental forum of the world’s 20 major developed and developing economies, making it the premier forum for international economic cooperation.

With more than 12,300 delegates from over 110 nations, the in-person participation in India’s G20 Presidency is the largest ever hosted by any G20 country so far.

Throughout India’s Presidency, more than 200 meetings in around 60 cities across India are still being planned, making it the widest geographical spread.

Moreover, under its G20 Presidency, India announced Srinagar as the venue for the G20 Tourism Working Group meeting which took place from May 22-24.

Among the 15 institutions in the country chosen to host Youth-20 and Civil -20 events which were organised in connection with India’s G-20 Presidency, the University of Kashmir (KU) was one of them. It’s for the first time in the past 70 years that J-K hosted an international event like G-20. (ANI)

Johnson Reshuffles His Top Team

With a major cabinet reshuffle, which saw ruthless demotions and unexpected promotions to few ministers, Prime Minister Boris Johnson is laying groundworks for the next general election, reports Asian Lite Newsdesk

In a major reshuffle, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has appointed his party’s first female foreign secretary and replaced and promoted few other ministers with an aim to secure a second term in power.

Elizabeth Truss has been appointed as the United Kingdom’s Foreign Secretary as Prime Minister Boris Johnson made a cabinet reshuffle on Wednesday, Downing Street said.

“The Rt Hon Elizabeth Truss MP @trussliz has been appointed Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs @FCDOGovUK. She remains as Minister for Women and Equalities @GEOgovuk,” Downing Street tweeted.

Anne-Marie Trevelyan was promoted to replace Truss as international trade secretary in the reshuffle at the top of Johnson’s government.

Meanwhile, foreign secretary Dominic Raab has been appointed as Deputy Prime Minister, Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice.

Johnson, who is promising to “build back better” from the pandemic, fired Gavin Williamson as education secretary and Robert Buckland as justice secretary. Meanwhile, vaccines minister Nadhim Zahawi was promoted to education secretary.

Junior Health minister Nadine Dorries, a best-selling novelist who has never sat at the cabinet table before, has replaced Oliver Dowden as culture secretary. Dowden was given the role of minister without portfolio at the Cabinet Office, and Conservative Party co-chair.

Meanwhile, the new Housing, Communities and Local Government Secretary Michael Gove, who replaced Robert Jenrick, will get the added responsibility of the government’s “levelling up” agenda – spreading wealth and opportunity around the country – while continuing to handle demands for another Scottish independence referendum, the BBC reported.

The prime minister is now expected to rejig his junior and middle-ranking ministers in a process which could take days, it was reported.

Following the reshuffle, the prime minister tweeted that his new cabinet would “work tirelessly to unite and level up the whole country”. “We will build back better from the pandemic and deliver on your priorities,” he said. “Now let’s get on with the job.”

Truss, who is the Tory party’s first female foreign secretary, and only the second woman to hold the role, following Labour’s Margaret Becket, said she was delighted by the appointment and would use the role to “promote a positive, outward vision of global Britain”, the BBC reported.

Dominic Raab was widely criticised for his handling of the UK withdrawal from Afghanistan, CNN reported.

It further reported that the former foreign secretary was on holiday in Greece as the Taliban took control of Afghanistan. He faced demands for his resignation after it emerged that not long before the fall of Kabul, he asked a deputy to handle an urgent call with the Afghan foreign minister regarding the evacuation of interpreters who had worked with British armed forces. The call never happened.

Raab said he was not considering his position, but he did admit that “with the benefit of hindsight” he would not have gone on holiday as the Taliban advanced on Kabul, CNN reported.

Afghanistan plunged into crisis last month after Kabul fell to the Taliban and the democratically elected government of former president Ashraf Ghani collapsed. The seizure of power has forced thousands of Afghans to flee for fear of reprisals from the outfit.

Team India to get second Covid jab in UK

The BCCI made a foolproof plan for the national team before they depart for the UK and arrangements were made for all the players to undergo three RT-PCR tests before assembling in Mumbai on Wednesday…reports Bhaidurjo Bhose.

With the first dose of COVID-19 vaccination done for the Indian players who are set to travel to England for the World Test Championship (WTC) final and the five-match Test series against England, the second dose will be administered by the UK health department.

Speaking to ANI, sources in the know of developments said the Indian players will receive the second dose under the guidance of the UK health department.

“The team has already taken the first dose here after the government opened the vaccination process for all above 18. The second dose will be administered by the UK health department once the players are eligible to get the second jab as per rules,” the source said.

The BCCI made a foolproof plan for the national team before they depart for the UK and arrangements were made for all the players to undergo three RT-PCR tests before assembling in Mumbai on Wednesday.

After completing the two-week quarantine in Mumbai, the team will undergo another 10-day quarantine in the UK. The second period will see them first undergo a hard quarantine before they take the field to train for the WTC final against New Zealand in Southampton. (ANI)
