Unseasonal rains hit hard Telangana paddy farmers

State minister K. T. Rama Rao, who represents Sircilla constituency, asked officials to provide details of the losses suffered by the farmers…reports Asian Lite News

Farmers in parts of Telangana suffered heavy crop losses due to unseasonal rain on Sunday night. Paddy ready to be harvested and also the produce kept near procurement centres suffered huge damage due to the heavy rains accompanied by strong winds in Nizamabad, Kamareddy, Karimnagar, Jagtial, Rajanna Sircilla, Medak, Nirmal and other districts.

In some places, farmers staged protests on Monday, demanding that the state government compensate them for the losses.

They alleged that the delay by the authorities in procuring paddy led to losses. The produce stored in the open near the procurement centres was either washed away or soaked in rain water.

Farmers complained that they had been waiting for 20 days for paddy to be procured and the delay led to huge damage. They said the authorities failed to arrange trucks for paddy to be transported from the fields to the procurement centres. In other places, the authorities did not arrange tarpaulins at procurement centres to protect the paddy.

In Kamareddy, Rajanna Sircilla and Karimnagar districts the farmers staged a sit-in or resorted to road blockades in support of their demand.

A group of farmers sat on the Nizamabad-Armoor highway. They demanded that the district collector come there and give them an assurance to pay compensation.

Congress leader and member of the Legislative Council Jeevan Reddy called on the affected farmers in Jagtial district and urged the state government to come to their rescue.

In Rajanna Sircilla district, BJP leaders met the affected farmers and extended support to their protest.

State minister K. T. Rama Rao, who represents Sircilla constituency, asked officials to provide details of the losses suffered by the farmers.

The unseasonal rains came as another blow to the paddy farmers as they were already worried over the delay due to the stand-off between the state and the central governments.

As the Centre refused to procure paddy despite the protest by the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), the state government last month came forward to procure the same from farmers.

Meanwhile, Kisan Congress leaders staged a protest at the civil supplies office in Hyderabad over alleged irregularities and also delay in paddy procurement.

The leaders led by Anvesh Reddy staged the protest in the office. They alleged that rice millers and officials were exploiting farmers.

Anvesh Reddy and others refused to leave till civil supplies commissioner Anil Kumar came to hear them. As they continued the protest raising anti-government slogans, police arrested them. The police personnel physically lifted the protesters and shifted them to a police station.

Telangana invites Elon Musk to ‘set shop’ in state

This was after Elon Musk informed that Tesla is facing a “lot of challenges” for its car launch in India, reports Asian Lite News

Days after Tesla CEO Elon Musk spoke about challenges when asked about the electric car’s entry into the Indian market, TRS Working President KT Rama Rao has invited the billionaire businessman to “set shop” in Telangana.

Rao said Telangana is a champion in sustainability initiatives and his government would be happy to partner with Tesla in working through the challenges.

“Hey Elon, I am the Industry and Commerce Minister of Telangana state in India. Will be happy to partner Tesla in working through the challenges to set shop in India/Telangana,” Rao said in a reply to Musk’s tweet.

“Our state is a champion in sustainability initiatives and a top notch business destination in India,” he added.

Musk on Thursday informed that the EV-maker is facing a “lot of challenges” for its car launch in India.

“Still working through a lot of challenges with the government,” Musk tweeted.

Musk was replying to a Twitter user, who asked: “Yo @elonmusk any further update as to when Tesla’s will launch in India? They’re pretty awesome and deserve to be in every corner of the world!”

Tesla wants to begin selling imported cars in India this year but says taxes in the country are among the highest in the world.

With a $39,990 global price tag, Tesla Model 3 may remain as an affordable model in the US but with import duties, it would become unaffordable in the Indian market with an expected price tag of around Rs 60 lakh.

Currently, India levies 100 per cent tax on the imported cars of price more than $40,000 (Rs 30 lakh) inclusive of insurance and shipping expenses, and cars less than $40,000 are subject to 60 per cent import tax.

Telangana man climbs on tree to avoid getting vaccinated

According to the director of public health, out of 2.77 crore targeted population, 2.58 crore (93 per cent) have taken the first dose. Only 1.37 crore (49 per cent) have taken the second dose…reports Asian Lite News.

With the health authorities going door to door to expedite Covid-19 vaccination and achieve 100 per cent target in Telangana by the end of December, incidents of vaccine hesitancy are coming to light.

In one such incident in Telangana’s Sangareddy district on Tuesday, a man climbed on a tree to avoid vaccination. When the health workers reached the house of Ghousuddin at Rejinthal village in Nyalkal mandal of Sangareddy district, he refused to take the vaccine.

Though Ghousuddin’s father Sardar Ali and other family members tried to persuade him to take the jab, the 33-year-old refused to budge. When the locals insisted, the man climbed on a tree. According to eye-witnesses, he sat on the tree for one hour and got down only after the health workers had left the place.

In another incident in Sangareddy town, a group of residents refused to take the vaccine and even tried to attack the health employees who were going door to door to administer the doses. Some people in the Nalsabgadda area raised objection to the visit by the team of health workers and refused to take the vaccine. They entered into an argument with the officials and asked if it was compulsory to take the vaccine.

This led to tension in the area. The health staff informed the police that a man tried to attack them. They also staged a protest demanding action against him. A police officer who rushed there said a case would be registered if the health employees lodge a written complaint. The police officer later succeeded in persuading the residents to take the vaccine.

The health workers are going door to door across the state to ensure 100 per cent vaccination. Since 51 per cent of the eligible people have not taken the second dose despite completing the gap time between two doses, the department is trying to administer the dose by going to their doorsteps.

According to the director of public health, out of 2.77 crore targeted population, 2.58 crore (93 per cent) have taken the first dose. Only 1.37 crore (49 per cent) have taken the second dose.

Of the 33 districts, the percentage of eligible people who have taken the second dose is 40 or less in 16 districts. Kumaram Bheem district has the lowest percentage (16) of people who have taken the second dose. Only 19 per cent have received the second dose in Vikarabad and Jogu Lamba Gadwal districts.

Telangana MP’s green challenge making a difference

Prabhakar Reddy accepted the challenge, planted saplings, posted the pictures to lend support Santosh Kumar’s cause…reports Mohammed Shafeeq.

Planting saplings on birthdays by politicians and celebrities in Telangana seems to have become the new fashion these days.

Their followers and fans also prefer to do something meaningful by presenting them saplings instead of bouquets or garlands.

Green India Challenge, an initiative of Member of Parliament J. Santosh Kumar, is credited with bringing this change.

The Rajya Sabha member’s Twitter timeline is flooded with pictures of political leaders, actors, sportspersons and other eminent people planting saplings to celebrate their birthdays by accepting his Green India Challenge (GIC).

While greeting other MPs, ministers, legislators, leaders and celebrities on their birthdays, the MP belonging to Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) urge them to plant a few saplings to mark the occasion. They respond by posting photographs clicked while planting the saplings.

“Hope you would plant few saplings to mark the special day of your life and see that your followers to do the same in order to achieve the dream of our CM KCR Sir’s HarithaTelangana,” Santosh Kumar tweeted tagging K. Prabhakar Reddy, the MP from Medak on his birthday on June 6.

Prabhakar Reddy accepted the challenge, planted saplings, posted the pictures to lend support Santosh Kumar’s cause.

Though looks symbolic, this initiative has helped in bringing a silent transformation. The MP’s passion about GIC and his continuous efforts to rope in top celebrities have helped the cause and so far led to planting of more than 10 crore trees in Telangana and other parts of the country.

It was on July 17, 2018 that Santosh Kumar launched GIC with the slogan ‘Hara Hai Toh Bhara Hai’ (If it is green, it is complete). “I was inspired by our Chief Minister’s Haritha Haram programme which is aimed at improving the green cover,” he said.

Started in 2015, Haritha Haram is one of the world’s largest plantation programme with an aim to increase the forest cover in the state from 24 per cent to 33 per cent. Every year, crores of saplings are being planted across the state under Haritha Haram, a brainchild of Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, popularly known as KCR.

“Haritha Haram is a testimony of KCR garu’s vision for the overall development state and its citizens. The logic behind is simple. The thick, dense forest cover ensures timely arrival of seasons, rains, which in turn increases the agricultural productivity, reduces environmental pollution, instills healthy living and the list of benefits goes on,” says Santosh, a relative of the chief minister.

Keen to do his bit in promoting green cover, the MP came with the idea of GIC, inviting people from all walks of life to plant saplings.

The challenge gained momentum with people sending in images, videos, responses, positive opinions about taking part in GIC.

Several eminent personalities have responded to his call. Celebrities like Sachin Tendulkar, Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgun, Shruthi Haasan, Shraddha Kapoor, Chiranjeevi, Nagarjuna, Prabhas, Krishna, Pawan Kalyan, Mahesh Babu, Rajamouli, Samanta, Pullela Gopichand, P V. Sindhu, Saina Nehwal and Sania Mirza have participated in GIC.

Going beyond the symbolic gesture, Santosh Kumar adopted 2,042 acres of Keesara Reserve Forest on the occasion of state minister and TRS Working President K. T. Rama Rao’s birthday. This was in response to ‘Gift a smile challenge’ of Rama Rao, who wanted his supporters to do something meaningful for the society on his birthday. It is believed to be the first instance of an individual adopting a forest for its protection.

This idea of adopting and pledging care for reserve forests motivated others. Actor Prabhas of ‘Baahubali’ fame came forward for protection and development of 1,650 acres of Kazipally Reserve Forest on the outskirts of Hyderabad.

The actor gave Rs 2 crore to the forest department for the purpose.

Santosh’s call to industrialists to come forward to participate in the green movement also started evoking good response. Hetero Pharma agreed to shield the greenery and life in 2,543 acres of Mumbapur-Nallavelli Reserve Forest.

On the Chief Minister’s birthday on February 17, the MP gave a call for ‘Koti Vrukshaarchana’ or planting of 1 crore saplings. He appealed to everyone to plant at least three saplings wherever possible.

“This idea was instantly liked and lapped up. I spoke to various individuals, professionals, employed, self-employed including public representatives both at central and state levels and it became a hit in a jiffy,” he said.

Last month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the Santosh Kumar’s initiative. In a letter to the MP, Modi congratulated him for undertaking ‘this noble initiative to preserve a cleaner, greener environment.’

The MP recently brought out the book ‘Vruksha Vedam’ which has the shlokas highlighting the importance of trees and forests as depicted in the Indian literature. It also explains the importance, medicinal and therapeutic properties of various plants, trees as mentioned in vedas for creating awareness among the general public.

GIC representatives Raghava and Karunakar Reddy say the GIC is for everyone. Anybody can plant 3 saplings in his/her house, park, balcony or any other place and WhatsApp selfie pictures to 9000365000. He will receive a message to download an App, where he can upload selgies. GIC also post the images its social media pages.
