UK govt taking poll interference threats seriously, says Shapps

A report by US software company Microsoft in November last year said Russia, Iran and China were likely to engage in sophisticated influence and interference efforts before the 2024 US election and other polls…reports Asian Lite News

The UK is taking threats of foreign interference elections expected later this year “very seriously”, the defence minister said on Sunday, after a warning from a counter-terrorism official.

“Obviously, that’s something that we take very seriously,” Shapps told the Sky News channel. Counter-terrorism bodies and other institutions would “be looking very carefully at that”, he said.

UK counter-terrorism chief Matt Jukes said Friday that the espionage threat from foreign states — such as China, Russia and Iran — is greater now than it has been “since the days of the Cold War”.

He said the police had set up a new unit to counter the threats of interference ahead of the election, which is expected to be called later this year. “We are talking about parts of the state apparatus of Iran, China and Russia,” Jukes said.

A report by US software company Microsoft in November last year said Russia, Iran and China were likely to engage in sophisticated influence and interference efforts before the 2024 US election and other polls.

All three countries were expected to seek to shape geopolitical outcomes in their favour amid major ongoing or potential regional conflicts, the report said. Interference bids are likely to take place on online platforms than those targeted in 2016 and 2020 polls.

The counter-terrorism chief also warned that conflict in the Middle East had led to a surge in Islamist activity and that the UK was facing “a radicalisation moment”. He said there had been a 25 per cent increase in information flowing through police systems about terrorism and violent extremism.

The unit would use powers granted by the National Security Act passed in July to  make it harder for countries to spy and interfere in the political process, he said.

“We are talking about parts of the state apparatus of Iran, China and Russia,” Jukes said.

A report by US software company Microsoft in November last year said Russia, Iran and China were likely to engage in sophisticated influence and interference efforts ahead of the 2024 US presidential election and in other pivotal elections worldwide.

All three countries were expected to seek to shape geopolitical outcomes in their favour amid major ongoing or potential regional conflicts, the report said.

Interference efforts were  likely to take place on different online platforms than those targeted in elections in 2016 and 2020.

The counter-terrorism chief also warned that conflict in the Middle East had led to a surge in Islamist activity and that the United Kingdom was facing “a radicalisation moment”.

He said there had been a 25 percent increase in information flowing through police systems about terrorism and violent extremism, “a significant increase” on “usual levels”.

“We always see spikes after terrorist incidents but what we’ve seen since October 7 has been a spike which is higher and more sustained than ever before,” Jukes said in comments to local media.

“I would describe the speed and the scale of the impact of those global events as extraordinary.”

‘Lanka not to be used as centre for any threat against India’

The President went on to say that the Chinese have been there for about 1,500 years and so far there has been no military base…reports Asian Lite News

Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe reiterated that there was no military agreement with China and that he would not allow the island nation to be used as a base for any threat against India.

“We are a neutral country, but we also emphasise on the fact that we cannot allow Sri Lanka to be used as a base for any threat against India,” President Wickremsinghe said in an interview with French media.

When inquired about China’s presence in Sri Lanka, especially militarily, Wickremsinghe responded “We have no military agreement with China; there won’t be any military agreements, and I do not think China will enter into one,”

The President went on to say that the Chinese have been there for about 1,500 years and so far there has been no military base.

He said that there were speculations about the China-run Hambantota harbour which he admitted that it “has been given out to China Merchants, but its security is controlled by the Sri Lankan government”.

“The Southern Naval Command will be shifted to Hambantota,” he reassured.

“There has certainly been no issue of military use by the Chinese. The same company also runs a terminal in Colombo harbour, in the South Port. That’s where all the warships come from all the countries.

“No one is complaining about the terminal in Colombo, but they are only complaining about the Hambantota Port,” he added.

Ahead of Biden’s visit, UK govt raises terror threat level

While the precise dates for Biden’s visit have not been finalized, the White House said that the terror threat change will not prevent the president from visiting…reports Asian Lite News

MI5, the United Kingdom’s domestic counterintelligence and security agency on Tuesday raised the terrorism threat level in Northern Ireland from “substantial” to “severe,” ahead of US President Joe Biden’s visit to the UK.

The decision of raising the threat level to “severe,” implies an attack is highly likely, was announced by UK Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Chris Heaton-Harris on Tuesday. However, the White House has said that the change will not affect Biden’s plans to visit the UK.

“In recent months, we have seen an increase in levels of activity relating to Northern Ireland Related Terrorism, which has targeted police officers serving their communities and also put at risk the lives of children and other members of the public. These attacks have no support, as demonstrated by the reaction to the abhorrent attempted murder of DCI Caldwell,” in a written Ministerial Statement, Heaton-Harris said.

In late February, a high-profile police officer in the country, Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell, was shot several times in front of his son and other children at a sports complex in Omagh, County Tyrone.

Heaton-Harris said the public should remain vigilant, but not be alarmed, and continue to report any concerns they have to the Police Service of Northern Ireland.

The political future of Northern Ireland rests with the democratic will of the people and not the violent actions of the few. Together we will ensure there is no return to the violence of the past.

The threat level to Northern Ireland from Northern Ireland Related Terrorism is constantly monitored and is subject to a regular formal review.

“This is a systematic, comprehensive and rigorous process, based on the very latest intelligence and analysis of factors which drive the threat. The threat level review takes into account a range of factors and analysis of recent incidents,” the statement added.

In February, Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell was shot several times by masked men in at a sports complex in Omagh, as per the news report. At that time, the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s (PSNI) Assistant Chief Constable Mark McEwan said that the force’s primary focus was on “violent dissident republicans,” and a number of people have been arrested since the attack.

Over the last 25 years, Northern Ireland has transformed into a peaceful society. The Belfast (Good Friday) Agreement demonstrates how peaceful and democratic politics improve society. However, a small number of people remain determined to cause harm to our communities through acts of politically motivated violence.

Earlier this month, US President Joe Biden said that he would visit Northern Ireland for the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement (GFA), also known as the Belfast Agreement. Biden also announced that he would visit the Republic of Ireland.

While the precise dates for Biden’s visit have not been finalized, the White House said that the terror threat change will not prevent the president from visiting. Notably, the Good Friday Agreement anniversary falls on April 10. However, Biden is likely to visit slightly later in the month.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Tuesday, White House deputy press secretary Olivia Dalton said, “No, it does not have any potential implications for future travel.”

Dalton further said, “I think as some of you may be aware, according to the UK authorities this announcement returned Northern Ireland to the threat levels they have been at for the last 12 years, reversing a downgrade that occurred just last year.”

Tensions have long existed between unionist communities, who support Northern Ireland being part of the United Kingdom, and republicans, who would prefer Northern Ireland to unite with the Republic of Ireland. The GFA brought these communities together in a compromise that largely ended The Troubles.

A key part of the agreement is that the country’s power-sharing government must be comprised of politicians from both communities. However, the Northern Irish government has not sat since October of last year for various reasons, including the fallout from the Brexit trade deal that was agreed when the UK left the European Union.

The Democratic Unionist Party, the largest unionist party, doesn’t like the status that the UK government’s Brexit deal has imposed on them. It was agreed by both the UK and the EU during Brexit negotiations that there should be no hard border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. While it’s not explicitly outlined in the GFA that there should be no border, it is considered essential to preventing violence flaring up.

Pakistan’s capital city of Islamabad has been put on high alert in the wake of intelligence reports that terrorists might strike in the city.

The security of high profile individuals including VVIPs, VIPs, diplomats and Chinese nationals has also been tightened, Pakistani newspaper Dawn reported.

Moreover, the security was also tightened around important installations, hospitals and religious places.

The Central Police Office (CPO) of Islamabad had written letters to various departments of the city, asking them to upgrade security for personalities and installations, senior police officers told Dawn.

The security officials have also been directed to stay on high alert at all check posts and points.

Earlier this month, radical Islamist party the Tehrik-i-Taliban in Pakistan (TTP) had claimed responsibility for a deadly bomb blast at a luxury hotel in Quetta, hosting the Chinese ambassador, which led to the killing of four. (ANI)
