France to ban non-essential travel to Britain

He said returning travelers would need a negative test less than 24 hours old, a blanket quarantine would be enforced on return to France, and trips for tourism limited…reports Asian Lite News.

France is to tighten restrictions on travel from Britain to slow the spread of the omicron variant of COVID-19 that is causing record numbers of cases on the other side of the Channel, the government said Thursday.

“We will put in place a system of controls drastically tighter than the one we have already,” government spokesman Gabriel Attal told BFM television, saying the office of Prime Minister Jean Castex would issue a statement on the new measures in the coming hours.

He said returning travelers would need a negative test less than 24 hours old, a blanket quarantine would be enforced on return to France, and trips for tourism limited.

“We will reduce the validity of the test to come to France from 48 hours to 24 hours,” said Attal.

“We will limit the reasons for coming to France from the UK, it will be limited to French nationals and residents and their families. Tourism or business trips for people who do not have French or European nationality or are residents will be limited.”

“People (coming back) will have to register on an app and will have to self-isolate in a place of their choosing for seven days — controlled by the security forces — but this can be shortened to 48 hours if a negative test is carried out in France,” he said.

Attal said this policy was aimed at “tightening the net” to slow down the arrival of omicron cases in France and give time for the French vaccination booster campaign to make more ground.

“Our strategy is to delay as much as we can the development of omicron in our country and take advantage to push ahead with the booster drive,” he said.

Britain on Wednesday recorded a record 78,610 laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases, with scientists predicting even higher rates as omicron is believed to spread much faster than the currently dominant delta variant.

The tight travel restrictions are also being imposed during what analysts see as a breakdown of trust between the British and French governments in the wake of Brexit over a host of issues from migrants to fishing.

French President Emmanuel Macron last week accused Boris Johnson’s government of failing to keep its word on Brexit, saying “the problem with the British government is that it does not do what it says”.

3-year travel ban for Saudi citizens visiting red list nations

The source said that there are reports about citizens travelling to the countries where travel is prohibited in violation of the instructions issued by the official authorities…reports Asian Lite News

The Ministry of Interior has warned Saudi citizens against travelling to countries that have been put on the no-travel list recently as these countries are currently witnessing a surge in cases of Covid-19 and its new variants.

In a statement carried by the Saudi Press Agency on Tuesday, an official source at the ministry said that travelling to the banned countries is an explicit violation of the announced instructions, the Saudi Gazette reported.

The source said that there are reports about citizens travelling to the countries where travel is prohibited in violation of the instructions issued by the official authorities, warning that such deception, if proven, warrants legal accountability and heavy penalties. He added that those who are found to have violated the instructions would be banned from travelling abroad for 3 years.

The Ministry of Interior in the statement called on citizens against travelling directly or indirectly to countries where the pandemic has not yet been controlled and there are cases of mutated strains.

It also urged citizens to exercise caution and stay away from areas where instability prevails or the virus is spreading, and take all precautionary measures regardless of their destination.

The red-list countries include the UAE, Libya, Syria, Lebanon, Yemen, Iran, Turkey, Armenia, Ethiopia, Somalia, Congo, Afghanistan, Venezuela, Belarus, India and Vietnam.

Last week, Saudi Arabia had announced the successful conclusion of this year’s Hajj season, free from the Covid-19 and other contagious diseases, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

Saudi Health Minister Tawfiq Al-Rabiah attributed the success to an integrated system of health facilities in the holy sites, highly equipped ambulances and qualified teams, the report said.

The minister added that limiting the number of domestic pilgrims during this Hajj season to 60,000 also contributed to the success, the Xinhua news agency reported.

For the second year in a row, Saudi Arabia has allowed only domestic pilgrims to performed Hajj to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.

As on Tuesday, the country’s coronavirus tally stands at 520,774, including 11,136 active cases, while the total number of deaths was at 8,189.

UAE flight ban extended until July 6, says Air India

Passengers who have booked flights for the affected dates can rebook for a later date, reports Asian Lite News

Air India Express has told passengers the UAE flight ban from India will run until July 6. The budget carrier said the UAE’s General Authority of Civil Aviation extended the date from June 30 for all inbound passenger flights.

The suspension does not apply to UAE citizens or diplomats. Passengers who have booked flights for the affected dates can rebook for a later date.

The UAE had extended the suspension of passenger flights from India till June 30 to combat the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. The ban was initially imposed on April 25, after a surge in Covid-19 cases in India.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia has lifted a ban on travellers arriving from 11 countries that it imposed to curb the spread of coronavirus. Travellers from the United Arab Emirates, Germany, the United States, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Switzerland, France and Japan, will be allowed entry.

India-UAE flights to remain suspended until June 30

Expatriates stranded in India had been seeking to travel back using charter services or via ‘transit’ stops such as Bahrain or former Soviet states such as Uzbekistan to fulfil the 14-day ‘quarantine’ period outside India.

Meanwhile, the Indian government had extended the ban on international flights till 30 June, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) had said in a circular. However, it said that the Covid-related restrictions will not apply to international all-cargo operations and flights specifically approved by the DGCA.

The development comes as India announced that its daily Covid-19 case numbers have fallen to less than 100,000 for the first time in two months.

The number of people infected in the past 24 hours was 86,498, the lowest in 66 days. The total number of people to have contracted the virus stands at about 28.9 million.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had on Monday announced free vaccines for all adults and promised to speed up the nation’s under-pressure inoculation drive.

UAE-based Indians cancel summer holiday plans

Several UAE-based Indian expats have either cancelled or put their summer vacation plans on hold in the fear of getting stuck amid Covid-induced travel curbs. The period between June to August are usually peak travel times for Indian expatriates, as they coincide with school summer holidays.

Raheesh Babu, general manager of Musafir.com, an online travel agency, said: “Peak travels to India are closely tied with school holiday seasons. In this case, the UAE has announced a robust vaccination campaign for students aged 12-15. Parents are concerned that, if they travel over the summer, their children might miss their vaccination schedule. Due to this, there is a high chance that school students may have to return to campus in September. Since the travel situation to India is highly volatile, residents are avoiding the trip because they also fear getting stranded.”

Babu added that the agency has already received several cancellations on bookings.

Taking the long route to UAE

Several expats are stranded in India, with some resorting to 15-day journeys to return to the UAE.

Afraid of losing their jobs, some expats have been travelling to the UAE via Armenia and Uzbekistan. They spend 15 days in quarantine at those destinations before returning to the UAE.

Passenger entry from India to the UAE, one of the world’s busiest air corridors, was suspended on April 25. Since then, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka have been added to the list, in addition to Nigeria and South Africa.
