US Capitol Police said later it was standing by to prepare the Senate office buildings for re-opening….reports Asian Lite News

The US Senate was locked down as US Capitol Police investigated reports of “an active shooter” in the office buildings.

“Our officers are searching in and around the Senate office buildings in response to a concerning 911 call. Please stay away from the area as we are still investigating,” US Capitol Police tweeted at 2:45 p.m.

US Capitol Police asked people inside the Senate buildings to shelter in place as police officers were searching the buildings for the suspected shooter. An all-clear was given at 4:04 p.m, Xinhua news agency reported.

US Capitol Police said later it was standing by to prepare the Senate office buildings for re-opening.

US Capitol Police Chief Thomas Manger told reporters that the 911 call about an active shooter might have been a bogus one and that there was no confirmation of an active shooter.

The Senate is currently in summer recess and most lawmakers are not in Washington, D.C.

US Senate votes to make daylight saving time permanent

The Senate by unanimous consent passed S.623, known as the Sunshine Protection Act, in an effort to make Daylight Saving Time permanent….reports Asian Lite News

The US Senate on Tuesday passed legislation that would make Daylight Saving Time permanent, consequently ending time switches in the springtime and autumn should the House pass their own version.

The Senate by unanimous consent passed S.623, known as the Sunshine Protection Act, in an effort to make Daylight Saving Time permanent.

The legislation, if also passed by the House of Representatives and signed into law by President Joe Biden, would establish a permanent Daylight Saving Time and eliminate the need to change clocks’ times every March and November.

The Sunshine Protection Act was first introduced to the Congress in 2018, sponsored by Rep. Vern Buchanan and Sen. Marco Rubio, and re-introduced by the two lawmakers to each subsequent Congress until it made it out of committee this session. (ANI/Sputnik)

US Senate condemns Putin as war criminal

Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer said that the Senate had joined together “to say that Russian President Vladimir Putin cannot escape accountability for the atrocities on Ukraine…reports Asian Lite News

The US Senate on Tuesday adopted a non-binding resolution condemning Russia’s “military operation” in Ukraine and Russian President Vladimir Putin as a war criminal, according to reports.

The resolution was adopted by Senate through a voice vote, American newspaper The Hill reported.

Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer said that the Senate had joined together “to say that Russian President Vladimir Putin cannot escape accountability for the atrocities committed against the Ukrainian people.”

“The legislation passing today, championed by Senator Graham, sends an unmistakable message that the U.S. Senate stands with Ukraine, stands against Putin, and stands with all efforts to hold Putin accountable for the atrocities levied upon the Ukrainian people,” he added.

“The next step for me is to work with our British allies and hopefully others to create an intel cell that will make available to the public Russian military units engaged in war crimes and start naming their commanders. A name-and-shame campaign is in the making,” Senator Graham said.

The resolution from Graham throws Senate support behind condemning violence “including war crimes, crimes against humanity and systemic human rights abuses” being carried by the Russian military, encourages countries to petition the International Criminal Court to investigate war crimes carried out by the Russian military and Russian President Vladimir Putin and formally supports a war crimes investigation, the Hill reported.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24 in response to calls from the region of Donetsk and Luhansk.

The Russian Defense Ministry claimed the “special operation” is targeting Ukrainian military infrastructure only and the civilian population is not in danger.

A number of countries including the US, UK and Australia have imposed numerous sanctions on Russia and condemned increasing casualties and refugee crisis arising out of the Russian offensive in Ukriane. (ANI)
