Vikram Unveils 62nd Film ‘Chiyaan 62’ in Rustic Swag

The video starts off amidst festive season, where in a local police station in the small town of Tiruttani, the police hold captive a bunch of wedding/festival musicians for some crime…reports Asian Lite News

Tamil star ‘Chiyaan’ Vikram is all geared up for his new project which is currently titled ‘Chiyaan 62’, making it the actor’s 62nd film. In the video, shared as an announcement for the film, Vikram emits pure swag and attitude but in a far more rustic and rural fashion this time.

After having completed the shoot for his films ‘Dhruva Natchathiram: Part 1 –Yuddha Kandam’ and ‘Thangalan’, the latter of which is under post-production, this is the third project that the actor has announced in 2023 in a row.

The ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ actor took to his X handle and unveiling the video wrote: “Thrilled to unveil the much-awaited announcement video of my upcoming film alongside the incredible talents of #SUArunKumar , @gvprakash musical and @hr_pictures. Brace Yourselves.”

The video doesn’t state the name of the film itself, though it is a radically different outing for the actor. In ‘Dhruva Natchathiram’, Vikram is playing a stylish killer, in ‘Thangalan’ some kind of tribal warrior. From what is seen in the video of ‘Chiyaan62’, it appears to be a kind of action-crime-thriller-drama movie with a very rustic setting.

The video starts off amidst festive season, where in a local police station in the small town of Tiruttani, the police hold captive a bunch of wedding/festival musicians for some crime.

A woman then comes crashing through and files a complaint of some unknown people, who assaulted her and her child prior to a religious procession.

When the officer asks her to identify them, the two assailants come all battered and bruised with another person beating them to half death.

As the man walks out of the station not paying any heed to the police, the officer stops the man who turns out to be Vikram. Whispering something in the officer’s ears, Vikram then calmly walks out while instructing the police to take care of the two injured people after fixing his slippers.

When a constable tries to stop him and asks: “Who are you?”, the actor sarcastically laughs and says: “Now that, is a real question!”

Wearing a very simple shirt with a dhoti, Vikram is emitting swag and attitude again, this time in a much more rustic and rural setting as ‘Chiyaan’ himself will be essaying the role of some kind of village macho-man, or something similar.

A HR Pictures production, ‘Chiyaan 62’ has G.V. Prakash for music, and marks the composer’s reunion with Vikram after ‘Deiva Thirumagal’. The movie is directed and written by S.U. Arun Kumar.

Vikram recounts how he flipped characters in ‘Anniyan’ scene

The actor shared with that while the world may think it must have been taxing for him to switch between the two personalities, it was actually quite easy for him because it came to him very naturally…reports Asian Lite News

Actor Vikram, who is gearing up for the release of Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus ‘Ponniyin Selvan: 2’, had a lasting impact on the audience with his performance in the 2005 Tamil psychological action thriller ‘Anniyan’.

The actor played the role of a person who suffers from multiple personality disorder as he feels let down by the society when it comes to abiding by the rules.

A scene in the film which stood out was the one where Vikram switches between two personalities — of a simpleton Ambi and the violent vigilante Anniyan.

The actor shared with that while the world may think it must have been taxing for him to switch between the two personalities, it was actually quite easy for him because it came to him very naturally.

Vikram told during the promotion of ‘PS 2’, “While I would like to maintain the enigma around the performance in that particular scene, the artiste in me wants to be completely honest. I didn’t have to do much during the scene because it somehow came naturally to me to swing between those two characters at that moment. Our director, Shankar (of ‘Nayak’ and ‘Enthiran’ fame), checked with me if I wanted to do it in parts, but I gave him the idea to him of filming the scene in a single take as I felt I was ready.”

He added, “I shared with him how I was going to do the scene and he was okay with the idea. So we did it in one take. However, it’s another thing that we went on to do eight takes just for safety, but what I did in the first take couldn’t be matched up by the subsequent takes… So, we kept that.”

‘Ponniyin Selvan: 2’, which is the sequel to Mani Ratnam’s 2022 release ‘Ponniyin Selvan: 1’, will release in theatres on April 28.

‘Cobra’: A decent action entertainer

A lot of thought has gone in to the film’s story and its making. But unfortunately, that is exactly what works against it…reports Asian Lite News

Duration: 183 minutes, Director: Ajay Gnanamuthu. Cast: Vikram, Srinidhi Shetty, Mrinalini Ravi, K.S. Ravikumar, Meenakshi Govindarajan, Irfan Pathan, Roshan Mathew, Miya George and Robo Shankar. (Rating: ***)

Director Ajay Gnanamuthu’s ‘Cobra’ is an intense but lengthy action entertainer that manages to impress you in parts.

The first half of the film is more of an action entertainer while the next half has equal doses of action, drama and family sentiment to offer.

The story begins with Rishi (Roshan Mathew) a ruthless business tycoon who fears no one, having a stand off with the Chief Minister of a state. Drunk on the power his business empire provides him, he orders the assassination of the Chief Minister who was looking to thwart his plans of business expansion.

Rishi’s most potent weapon is a person nicknamed the Cobra (Vikram), a brilliant mathematician whose identity even Rishi does not know.

Rishi’s instructions are communicated to the Cobra, whose real name we get to know is Mathi, through a journalist (K. S. Ravikumar) and they are carried out with precision every single time.

The Chief Minister’s assassination is soon followed by the assassination of the Prince of Switzerland and the Defence Minister of Russia.

The only common factor in all the assassinations is the usage of mathematics, that is cleverly employed by the assassin. Hot on the trail of this assassin is not just the state police but also the Interpol, of which Aslan Ilmaz (Irfan Pathan) is a part.

Feeding secret information to the Interpol about the assassin is an anonymous computer genius, who delivers clues about who the next target of the Cobra is.

As the Interpol arrives in the country to gather additional information from the state investigating agencies, the hunt for Cobra intensifies.

Do the law enforcement agencies succeed in their mission of nabbing the Cobra? Why did the Cobra turn an assassin? What happens to Rishi on whose behest the assassinations are carried out? Cobra answers all these questions and more…

A lot of thought has gone in to the film’s story and its making. But unfortunately, that is exactly what works against it.

The plot of the film is so intricate and so complex that viewers have to keenly watch and pay attention to every development on screen, including the dialogues. One small miss and there’s every chance that the plot may well go over your head.

The first half of the film is fast and action-oriented and one is able to relish it. The second half is actually where the problem lies. It is distinctly different from the first and focuses on the introduction of a new character called Kathiravan (Vikram) that makes it exceedingly difficult for audiences to follow the developments.

Nevertheless, Vikram dazzles as both Mathi and as Kathiravan. He gives us a glimpse of that magnificent acting which he displayed in ‘Anniyan’.

One sequence in the film in particular is simply outstanding. In it, Vikram imitates the actions of the characters that appear in his hallucinations. Anandraj, who comes as one of the characters in his hallucination, is just equally brilliant in these seqeunces.

Both Anandraj and Vikram perform the very same body movements without looking at each other, even as they deliver the very same lines. Their actions are perfectly in sync with one another and leave you stunned.

Mrinalini Ravi’s chemistry with Sarjano Khalid, who plays the younger Mathi, works big time. Both actors deliver commendable performances and their portions add strength to the film.

Srinidhi Shetty, K.S. Ravikumar, Roshan Mathew and Robo Shankar too play their roles neatly and convincingly.

The background score is sometimes so loud that it overpowers the dialogues being spoken, making it difficult for audiences to follow proceedings.

Harish Kannan’s visuals are stunning and a delight to watch.

One wishes the editing was a bit tighter as the run time of the film is a whopping three hours and three minutes.

On the whole, Cobra is a decent action entertainer which is impressive in parts.

Vikram: A complete royal masterpiece from Lokesh

The Black Ops team begins its work. Of the three killings, the death of Karnan catches the attention of Amar as the other two are government servants…Reviewed by Manigandan K.R.

Duration: 174 minutes (Released in Theatres) Director: Lokesh Kanakaraj. Cast: Kamal Haasan, Vijay Sethupathi, Fahadh Faasil, Kalidas, Chemban Vinod Jose, Hareesh Peradi, Gayathrie, Suriya, Narain and Santhana Bharathi. (Rating: ***1/2)

‘Vikram’ is a reasonably good film that has a generous serving of action sequences and the unmistakable signature of director Lokesh Kanakaraj on it.

There have been situations earlier when directors, looking to please their lead actors, have ended up making films that are far from what they originally had in mind. But to his credit, Lokesh Kanakaraj seems to have held his nerve and more importantly, called the shots. The film leaves no one in doubt that he’s narrated the story the way he actually wanted to.

The story starts with a series of killings. A group of trained masked men, who claim to be fighting against the system, kill three people one after the other. The first of those killed is Prabhanjan (Kalidas Jayaram), a police officer actively involved in the seizure of a huge quantity of raw material required to prepare cocaine.

The next is a person identified as Stephen Raj (Hareesh Peradi) and the third is Karnan (Kamal Haasan), who is believed to be the adopted father of Prabhanjan.

The killings don’t look like stopping any time soon, leaving the police chief (Chemban Vinod Jose) worried. He chooses to bring in a specialised Black Ops team led by Amar (Fahadh Faasil) to track and eliminate the gang of masked murderers.

The Black Ops team begins its work. Of the three killings, the death of Karnan catches the attention of Amar as the other two are government servants.

He begins to carefully investigate the death of Karnan, eventually discovering that there is much more to what actually meets the eye. He figures out that Karnan had deliberately made himself appear like a womaniser, alcoholic and drug addict only to those around him to enable him to go after big fish without raising suspicions.

Eventually, he realises that Karnan is in fact Vikram and that he was going after Sandhanam (Vijay Sethupathi), a drug addict and a drug lord who has a huge family that includes three wives and an army of thugs.

Why is Vikram after Sandhanam? Is Vikram still alive? Who is Vikram in reality? Does Vikram manage to get the better of Sandhanam? What does Amar do? ‘Vikram’ answers questions like these — and more.

The film works as an action entertainer, but doesn’t leave you impressed or awe-struck. That is a tad disappointing, considering that it has so many heavy-duty performers such as Kamal Haasan, Fahadh Faasil and Vijay Sethupathi and expectations from the film were quite high.

Most action sequences are intense. but what they fail to establish is the emotional connect. One or two of the sequences that manage to establish the connect, work big time.

Take for instance the fight sequence in which a woman team member, identified as Tina, blows her cover as a maid to take on the thugs entering the house of Karnan to kill Vikram’s grandchild. This sequence works big time. But unfortunately for the makers, the same cannot be said of several other action sequences in the film.

One other aspect of the film that does not work in its favour is the narration. The manner in which the story is narrated in the first half makes it difficult for audiences to follow the plot.

It is not that the sequences don’t add up. They do. It is just that the audiences have to make a conscious and determined effort to keep all the details of the plot in mind if they wish to follow the story.

That apart, the film’s story has several elements in common with the story of one of Lokesh Kanakaraj’s previous films — ‘Kaithi’, giving room for boredom to set in.

For instance, ‘Kaithi’ too was about goons looking to reclaim drugs that had been confiscated by the authorities. ‘Kaithi’ also had the hero looking to use powerful arms and ammunition to wriggle out of a tight corner. There are several more similarities, but these must be good enough to make the point.

On the positive side, the film has some spectacular performances coming from its lead artistes. Kamal Haasan does a neat job of playing Vikram as does Vijay Sethupathi who plays Sandhanam. The characterisation of Sandhanam makes Vijay Sethupathi’s performance that much more appealing.

For instance, the mafia don, we are told, takes specific drugs for specific situations. If he is losing a fight he needs to win, he takes a specific drug. If he needs his senses to be alert to track a bomb that has been planted in his place, he takes another. Vijay Sethupathi just revels in this role.

But it is Fahadh Faasil as the Black Ops team lead Amar who steals the show. Sharp, smart and swift, Fahadh manages to hog all the attention, despite sharing screen space with some of the most powerful performers in the film industry.

The film has a decent background score by Anirudh and some exceptional visuals by Girish Gangadharan.

On the whole, ‘Vikram’ works if one looks at it as just an action entertainer. One cannot but heave a sigh of disappointment, however, when one realises that the film could have been so much more than what it has just been made into.

Kamal happy over emergence of ‘Indian cinema’ cuts across language barriers

The 67-year-old star, who started as a child artiste when he was all of six, has been acting for more than five decades…writes Durga Chakravarty

At a time when Hindi has been at the centre of a controversy over whether it should become India’s link language, Tamil superstar Kamal Haasan, who had once called Hindi “still a little child in diapers”, said here on Thursday that the conversation is not needed as the country’s “diversity is our strength.”

The actor, who was in the national capital to promote the Tamil action thriller ‘Vikram’, said: “We should be proud that we have people speaking different languages but communicating with each other in English. There’s nothing wrong with it. The British robbed us of many things, but they left us something which we can encash now.”

The auteur, who’s back from the 75th Cannes Film Festival, underlined the strength of India’s linguistic diversity: “Why are we making it our weakness? We have so many languages and we have learned to live with them. We have so many cuisines. Our diversity is our strength. We should be proud of it rather than being ashamed of it.”

The 67-year-old star, who started as a child artiste when he was all of six, has been acting for more than five decades. He has worked in several languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Bengali and Hindi, where he has been a part of a number of acclaimed films such as ‘Sadma’, ‘Ek Duuje Ke Liye’ and ‘Saagar’.

He’s happy therefore about the emergence of an ‘Indian cinema’ that cuts across language barriers. Why did it take us so long to call it ‘Indian cinema’?

Kamal, who likes to be referred to as an “Indian actor”, said: “I hope it happens in every field. You call it Indian language instead of calling it Tamil, Malayalam, Hindi or Bengali. It’s our language. I cannot speak it but there are millions who can speak it. Like 80 million people speak Tamil, that’s a lot of people bigger than a country.”

Over the years, the box office has seen regional language movies such as the ‘Baahubali’ franchise, and more recently, ‘Pushpa: The Rise’, the ‘KGF’ franchise and ‘RRR’ leaving Hindi films far behind in the competition for eyeballs. What is Bollywood doing wrong?

“Nothing wrong,” the superstar was quick to reply, adding: “Some of them are very talented.”

He explained: “It’s like the National Awards, which are given by (a jury of)12 people. But the audience, millions of them, also give awards. The fact that an actor doesn’t get a National Award doesn’t make him a bad actor. It doesn’t make him an actor who is doing something wrong.

“It’s just that he didn’t get the right opportunity, the producer, to do it. The same applies to filmmakers when they want to make a film — the right production, the right distribution, the right publicity, these are all important factors. All these are coalescing now, thanks to technology, communications, YouTube, media — everything has grown. So, we are able to reach out to a lot more people, instead of shouting ourselves hoarse to get national attention.”

‘Vikram’, which is being backed by Kamal Haasan production house, Raaj Kamal Films International, is scheduled for a June 3 release. Besides the superstar, the Lokesh Kanagaraj film has Vijay Sethupathy and Malayalam actor Fahad Faasil playing the lead characters, with music scored by Avinash Ravichander.
