US Warns On Microsoft Outage, Nadella Assures Fix

CISA warns hackers exploiting Microsoft outage for phishing, as CEO Satya Nadella assures efforts to restore systems safely and globally are underway, reports Asian Lite News

US cybersecurity agency CISA has warned that hackers are trying to take advantage of Microsoft outage for phishing and other malicious activity, as the tech giant’s Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella said they are working hard to safely bring systems back online globally.

The US cybersecurity agency warned individuals to “avoid clicking on phishing emails or suspicious links,” which can lead to email compromise and other scams.

“Threat actors continue to use the widespread IT outage for phishing and other malicious activity. CISA urges organisations to ensure they have robust cybersecurity measures to protect their users, assets, and data against this activity,” it said in a statement

The outage has impacted Windows 10 and later systems, and is due to the “CrowdStrike Falcon content update and not to malicious cyber activity”.

Nadella said in a post on X that “We are aware of this issue and are working closely with CrowdStrike and across the industry to provide customers technical guidance and support to safely bring their systems back online.”

A fresh Microsoft statement read that they are actively supporting customers to assist in their recovery.

According to CrowdStrike, the issue has been identified, isolated and a fix has been deployed.

Panos Panay, Windows’ chief product officer who also led the company’s Surface devices, on Monday announced he is leaving Microsoft after “19 incredible years”. Yusuf Mehdi, Microsoft’s corporate vice president of modern life, search, and devices, will take his place as the head of the Windows and Surface businesses.

Panay joined Microsoft in 2004 as a group programme manager and became the company’s chief product officer in 2018, where he led the development of Windows 11.

In 2021, Panay was promoted to executive vice president as part of the top leadership team under Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.

“I’ve decided to turn the page and write the next chapter. I’m forever grateful for my time at Microsoft and the amazing people I had the honor to make products with,” Panay said in a post on X.

“Thank you, Panos, for your impact on our products, culture, company, and industry over the past two decades,” Nadella said in a statement.

“I’m grateful for your leadership, support, and all you’ve done for Microsoft and our customers and partners,” he added.

In an internal email, Rajesh Jha, Microsoft’s vice president of experience and devices, told employees that Panay has decided to leave the company.

More recently, as the leader of Windows, the team under Panay brought “amazing services and experiences to hundreds of millions with Windows 11 on innovative devices including those from our OEM partners”.

“Moving forward, we will double down on our strategy. These changes will be effective immediately with Panos’ help in the transition,” Jha wrote.

“He will be missed, and I am personally very grateful for his many contributions over the years,” he added.

Windows 11 to alert users about unsafe copy & pasted passwords

The company also made some improvements to the built-in Windows share window and nearby sharing for sharing local files from the PC…reports Asian Lite News

Microsoft has announced that it is rolling out ‘Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 23506’ to the Dev Channel, which includes unsafe copy and pasted password warnings, local file sharing improvements and much more.

With the new build, the company is “trying out” a feature for users who have enabled warning options for Windows Security to “see a UI warning on unsafe password copy and paste, just as they currently see when they type in their password,” the tech giant said in a blogpost on Wednesday.

The company also made some improvements to the built-in Windows share window and nearby sharing for sharing local files from the PC.

The improvements include redesigned Windows share window, the ability to email the files through Outlook directly within the Windows share window, and more.

Starting with Build 23506, the new Outlook for Windows Preview is now an inbox app. With the new Outlook for Windows, users can connect work and personal emails, calendars and contacts in one secure place.

The company also mentioned that the Windows Copilot Preview, which began rolling out with Build 23493, is now available to all Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel.

“With the update of our colour font format to COLRv1, Windows is now able to display richer emoji with a 3D like appearance with support coming soon to some apps and browsers,” it added.

These emoji use gradients to bring the design style that the users have been asking for. Moreover, Voice access is now available via the accessibility flyout on the Lock screen.

Also, the tech giant has temporarily disabled the new Settings homepage that began rolling out with Build 23493 due to a bug that could cause some instability on Insider’s PCs. However, it plans to re-enable and roll this back out once that bug is fixed in a future flight.
