Trucks carrying Iranian oil arrives in Lebanon

Lebanon has received tanker trucks carrying Iranian oil in a move aimed at easing energy shortages in the crisis-hit country…reports Asian Lite News

A vessel carrying Iranian oil docked in Syria on Sunday, and the oil was unloaded in trucks and sent by land to the Bekaa Valley on Thursday, reports Xinhua news agency.

Lebanon has been suffering from shortage of US currency reserves, which deprives the country from importing its oil needs.

Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah announced on Monday that a second ship with fuel oil would arrive in the Syrian port of Baniyas in a few days, and Lebanon is expected to receive two more ships carrying gasoline and fuel oil.

Some Lebanese anti-Hezbollah parties expressed over the past few days their concerns over the possibility of the US imposing sanctions on Lebanon after its oil imports from Iran.

Two days ago, Lebanese President Michel Aoun said his country will begin talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank soon.

“We will initiate talks with the IMF and World Bank for financing, as there is an international will to help us,” Aoun said during his meeting at Baabda Palace with a delegation from the labour confederation on Wednesday.

He added that economy will be the main priority in the coming period.

Aoun said that the new cabinet will launch several projects, including the construction of power stations and the reconstruction of the Beirut port which was destroyed by two huge explosions on August 4, 2020.

Lebanon formed a new cabinet on September 10, breaking 13 months of political deadlock in the crisis-torn country.

The 24 cabinet ministers, who are not official members of Lebanon’s different political parties, were appointed by ruling authorities based on their political affiliations.

According to the new Prime Minister Najib Mikati, his cabinet is formed of specialists who are keen to stop the country’s current collapse by dealing with urgent issues, including the negative repercussions of lifting subsidies.

Since the Beirut port explosions and the resignation of the government of Prime Minister Hassan Diab last year, Lebanese citizens and experts have been calling for an efficient cabinet capable of undertaking major reforms such as the overhaul of the electricity sector, the restructuring of the public sector and the fight against corruption.

However, differences among political parties over the ministerial shares’ distribution delayed the cabinet formation which exacerbated the country’s financial and economic crisis, with about 74 per cent of the population living in poverty now.

In a presidential statement, the Council encouraged the three stakeholders to resume talks at the invitation of the chairperson of the African Union (AU) to finalize expeditiously the text of mutually acceptable and binding agreement on the filling and operation of the dam, “within a reasonable time frame”, reports Xinhua news agency

The Security Council called on the three countries to take forward the AU-led negotiation process in a constructive and cooperative manner.

It also encouraged observers that have been invited to attend the AU-led negotiations and any other observers that the three countries may consensually decide to jointly invite, to continue supporting the negotiations with a view to facilitating the resolution of outstanding technical and legal issues.

It underscored that this statement does not set out any principles or precedent in any other transboundary water disputes.

Despite countless tripartite negotiations among experts, ministers and leaders of the three African countries, they are yet to reach a trilateral agreement regarding the project.

Food Shortage Dogs South Sudan

The UN estimated in December 2020 that 2.4 million people faced emergency levels of acute food insecurity…reports Asian Lite News

People in South Sudan currently face the highest levels of food insecurity recorded since the country’s independence from Sudan 10 years ago, said a UN official.

More than 60 per cent of the total estimated population of 12.78 million people are severely food insecure, Xinhua news agency quoted Reena Ghelani, director for operations and advocacy at the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, as saying.

The UN estimated in December 2020 that 2.4 million people faced emergency levels of acute food insecurity.

Food insecurity at highest levels in South Sudan

Between April and July 2021, some 108,000 people faced catastrophic levels of acute food insecurity, at the height of the lean season, she told the Security Council in a briefing on the humanitarian situation in South Sudan.

“The combined effects of conflict, climate shocks, displacement, the socio-economic impact of Covid-19, and the lack of investments in infrastructure and basic services have driven people deeper into need,” she said.

More than 8.3 million people currently need humanitarian assistance, including 1.4 million children, said Ghelani.

Aid agencies assisted some 4.4 million people across the country between January and June 2021 with food, medical and nutritional care, water and sanitation, protection support, and shelter.

Notwithstanding these gains, there has been limited change in the behaviour of non-state armed groups and certain youth groups that continue to hamper access, she said.

Since the beginning of this year, four aid workers have lost their lives in the line of duty. And over 170 aid workers had to relocate due to security threats, she said.

The destruction and looting of humanitarian facilities has continued, including the looting of over 1,000 metric tonnes of food, valued at more than $1 million.

ALSO READ: Food shortage dogs Covid-hit China

In addition, frequent attacks on civilians and humanitarian convoys and roadside ambushes have disrupted operations and resulted in increased prices of essential goods for an already vulnerable population she said.

An alarming development this year has been the interference of aid activities by armed youth, she added.

The humanitarian needs have further been exacerbated by exceptional flooding for a third consecutive year, affecting so far nearly 420,000 people. With more heavy rains expected in the coming months, thousands of people will be forced to move from their places and their homes and will require assistance and livelihood support, said Ghelani.

As South Sudan emerges from the lean season with hopes for the harvest season, there is a risk that flooding may lessen any food security gains, which would contribute to extreme food insecurity recurring next year, she warned.

The South Sudan humanitarian response plan of $1.7 billion is the largest ever for South Sudan, but it is only 56 per cent funded, she said.

Funding challenges have forced the World Food Programme (WFP) to reduce the scale of food rations in all refugee, protection-of-civilian camps and camps for internally displaced persons (IDPs) from April this year, affecting 700,000 people.

In October, the WFP will be forced to stop support in some other IDP camps due to supplies being reallocated or reprioritised to counties where people are at the brink of famine. Should resources become available, the WFP would resume assistance to 106,000 affected people in these camps, she said.

South Sudan is also on alert for a resurgence of Covid-19, driven by the Delta variant. Measures adopted to mitigate and prevent the spread of the virus have had a limited impact due to the challenges and the lack of ability of the health system to carry out vaccinations and low uptake of the vaccination, she said.

ALSO READ: Beijing deepens security ties with Africa to secure stronger foothold

To prevent famine in South Sudan next year, the UN official asked all actors with influence to work to de-escalate the violence in South Sudan.

While the peace process has had a real impact in parts of South Sudan, its implementation has progressed at a slow pace, and violence continues to interrupt the process, she said.

Humanitarians need continued support from the government of South Sudan for safe and unhindered access to reach people who desperately need help, she said.

While resources are needed now for the humanitarian response plan to sustain the response, donors are urged to give funding at scale early in 2022, so that humanitarians can get ahead of the needs which are anticipated to rise, she said.

Apple iPhone 13 Pro promises leap in filmmaking tech

Apple’s newly-launched iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max push the boundaries of what is possible in a smartphone…reports Asian Lite News

This time, the Pro’s camera system gets its biggest advancement ever with new ultra-wide, wide, and telephoto cameras that aims to capture stunning photos and videos, powered by the unmatched performance of A15 Bionic.

“For long now, smartphone cameras have been a key battleground for OEMs to differentiate their premium flagship phones in a hyper-competitive smartphone market. With new features such as 3x optical zoom, macro photography and the Cinematic Mode, Apple has been able bring new camera capabilities to its iPhone 13 series,” CMR’s Head, Industry Intelligence Group Prabhu Ram told IANS.

Apple iPhone 13 Pro

New computational photography features like photographic styles personalise the look of images in the camera app, and both models now include Night mode on all cameras. Video takes a huge leap forward with Cinematic mode for beautiful depth-of-field transitions, macro video, Time-lapse and Slo-mo, and even better low-light performance.

“The Cinematic mode, in particular, brings powerful visual storytelling capabilities to consumers everywhere. The cinematic mode will further democratise professional-grade film-making sans the need for expensive cinema cameras,” Ram added.

With new sensors and lenses for all three rear cameras, optimised to work seamlessly with iOS 15 and powered by the new image signal processor (ISP) in A15 Bionic for improved noise reduction and tone mapping, the iPhone 13 Pro lineup features the best camera system ever on iPhone.

“For creative control, the focus can be changed during and after capture, and users can also adjust the level of bokeh in the Photos app and iMovie for iOS, and coming soon to iMovie for macOS and Final Cut Pro, making the lineup the only devices able to edit the depth-of-field effect in video even after recording. Enabled by A15 Bionic and advanced machine learning algorithms, Cinematic mode records in Dolby Vision HDR,” Apple said.

Apple has also posted a new ad for the iPhone 13 Pro highlighting its cinematic video recording capabilities. The ad was directed by two-time Oscar winner Kathryn Bigelow.

“That’s really bringing it up to the professional film cameras,” cinematographer Greig Fraser, who was joined in a promotional video with Bigelow, said during Apple’s Tuesday event. “We’re going to very, very soon see filmmakers make films in a different way.”

Cinematic mode on iPhone records videos of people, pets, and objects with a better depth effect. Enabled by A15 Bionic and advanced machine learning algorithms, Cinematic mode records in Dolby Vision HDR.

“It will democratise film making and essentially help a lot of user generated content to go pro level, which can further better the consumption of such content. Also (it is a) good option for solo content creators especially for digital platforms. The new iPhone comes with great features at a time when live commerce and social commerce is commencing. The camera features will help many solopreneurs to create a compelling and immersive video stories to complement the trend,” techARC Founder and Chief Analyst, Faisal Kawoosa, told IANS.

iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max also introduced ProRes, an advanced video codec used widely as the final delivery format for commercials, feature films, and broadcasts, to offer higher colour fidelity and less compression. iPhone is the only smartphone to provide an end-to-end workflow — capture, edit, and share in Dolby Vision or ProRes.

“I think the form factor here and advancement in computational photography will surely help more user to shift in favour of smartphone photography. However, cameras will still have professional audience sticking with them but surely, they need to innovate further,” market intelligence firm Counterpoint Research Director Tarun Pathak said.
