2020-2021 Jewellery Trends

While 2020 was all about mindful spending and investment, 2021 would see the return of jewellery as an adornment, as people would embrace back socialising with fervent, say experts…writes Puja Gupta.

Jewellery in 2021 would be anything but boring and subtle. So we would see a ‘riot of colours’ expressed through unusual combinations of very different families of gemstones coming together, giving designers a very rich canvas to paint on, they add.

IANSlife spoke to industry veterans to look back at the trends that won 2020 and trends that will rule 2021.

Trends that ruled 2020

Federica Imperiali, Global Head of Product Development at Forevermark Diamonds tells IANSlife: “2020 trends were focused on the importance of protecting our precious planet, personal fulfilment, the value of empowerment and acceptance, and the choices we make. These inspirations brought to life jewellery that suggests a harmonious connection to the natural world: botanical forms combined with sculptural outlines to create a striking new design language. We have seen growing the interest in a multi faced spirituality and in the willingness to celebrate through jewellery with unusual diamond shape, or amusing hidden details, amulets to bring good luck in our lives.”

Abhishek Rastogi, Head of Design, Jewellery Division, Titan Company Limited says: “Trends in 2020 were largely influenced by Covid and we saw its widespread impact on our lifestyle choices as well. Thanks to the omnipresent mask we saw a remarkable shift to fuss-free jewellery especially around the face and in particular the earrings. Hence long flowy danglers and chandeliers gave way to the ‘Button-up’ trend, giving more power to the evergreen ear studs. Consumers across lapped up this trend and we noticed studs in all shapes and sizes, the larger the better!”

He adds: “With 24/7 video calls, conferences and webinars becoming the new reality in 2020, we saw an amplified need for making ‘above the keyboard dressing’ impactful. We call this trend ‘Zoom-groomed’ where less popular jewellery categories like brooches and high-collar necklaces became an instant rage. A must have to add zing to those never-ending lockdown meetings.”

Ketan Chokshi, Jewellery Designer & Co-Owner, Narayan Jewellers says: “2020 was an active year till the mid of March. However, things were put on hold till June-July and no trend was observed during that period. One most important observation that I would like to add here is that customers’ sentiment towards jewellery has become even stronger during these COVID times. We did not see any compromise when people started buying jewellery.”

Trends observed in 2020 are:

Chokers: Be it a casual choker, a gold one or a diamond choker, this beautiful necklace which fits on the neck is loved by everyone. Chokers have a tendency to add class to any outfit while defining your neck beautifully.

Gold tones: Long royal necklaces with earrings made of Kundan, Polki, and Meenakari were an important part of the jewellery trend in 2020. It included multi-layered necklaces, and pieces with delicate but detailed work that formed a part of the trend.

Studs: Stud is that piece of jewellery which will never go out of fashion. The availability of studs in various shapes, size, colour and the easiness to wear keeps the jewellery piece in trend always.

Accessories played an important role: This year has seen the use of a lot of accessories like maangtika, pasa, haathphool, light weight bangles and bracelets. Even if one is not wearing heavy jewellery pieces, accessorising your attire can change your entire look.

Trends that will rule 2021

2021 will follow a year of significant changes, so experts can forecast the desire to invest, now more than ever, in purchases that are meaningful and have enduring value.

Imperiali says once again nature will be the primary source of inspiration for 2021 jewellery and in particular rain as it can be associated with renewal, rejuvenation, and growth. “Silhouettes based on sculptural twists that thrill from every angle, dynamic and surprising jewellery pieces linked to the versatility of diamonds — in their cuts and the ways they are set — perfectly translate this concept.”

Adding: “Inspired by the patterns, motifs and symbols used by global cultures to express deeply held beliefs, jewels with tribal echoes speak to our renewed interest in traditions that celebrate belonging, identity and our place in the world.”

According to Rastogi: “The jewellery in 2021 would be anything but boring and subtle. So we would see a ‘riot of colours’ expressed through unusual combinations of very different families of gemstones coming together, giving designers a very rich canvas to paint on.”

“2021 would see return of jewellery as adornment, as people would embrace back socializing with a fervent. Minimalism would be an extinct word from our dictionaries for a while now and we would see rise of extremely bold and dramatical jewellery pieces, almost like a wearable art. So be open to embrace highly unusual silhouettes especially in the neckwear space,” he adds.

Chokshi lists down more jewellery trends that are going to go big in 2021.

Asymmetrical Earrings: This is a concept that was introduced by us in the year 2019 on the runway of New York Fashion Week. Since then, asymmetrical earrings have been in trend quite a lot and we expect them to be in vogue in 2021 also.

Florals: Floral jewellery with a pinch of colour will trend the year 2021. Flower jewellery has become common amongst brides that also include earrings, necklaces, and rings in gold and white gold.

Layered jewellery: Layering of necklaces is considered to be an art and if done in the right way can enhance one’s personality. The best part about layered necklaces is that one gets to play with its length, texture and mismatched design.

Detachable jewellery pieces: The best part about detachable jewellery pieces is that they can be worn according to one’s own convenience. Detachable diamond jewellery will stay in trend in the year 2021, especially amongst the brides, who will be able to wear the jewellery on several occasions.

‘Music has a big role in my life’

Singer Jassie Gill, who debuted in Hindi cinema with the 2018 film ‘Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi’ says what he can feel via music, he wouldn’t be able to feel as deeply otherwise…writes Siddhi Jain.

“Music has a big role in my life and also during these difficult times, because I am a singer. What I can feel via music, I don’t think I’d be able to feel otherwise. Not just this time, music is also your feel-good companion during happiness and all other emotions,” Gill, 32, told IANSlife.

Gill, who was a mentor on the digital-only musical reality show Smule iDiva ‘1, 2, 3… Riyaaz’ recently featured in “Saath Saath Mein”, an original music video that also featured the show’s winners and co-mentors Lisa Mishra and Kusha Kapila.

Iterating that the show must go on, the Punjabi pop heartthrob says that he made a lot of music during lockdown and launched his own YouTube channel to “release the voice of my heart – whether it’s commercial music or not – on it”.

Gill said about the music video: “It was the first time I shot and recorded my own bit, and then it was joined with other bits sent by others.”

On the show’s format and his experience of mentoring, he says: “It was a new digital-only reality show, a format we have seen only on television. Housewives, elderly people also entered into the contest, and it made me smile because all people found a good pastime in the show.”

‘Unite Against Chinese Expansion’

Renowned Albanian historian Dr. Olsi Jazexhi says India Pakistan must become friends to fight Chinese Expansionism …. Interview by Nadir Ali Wani

Dr. Olsi Jazexhi

Albanian Historian Dr. OlsiJazexhi said that India and Pakistan must forget their past differences and become friends, so as to fight Chinese Imperialism.

“Because after all Indians and Pakistanis are the same people the only difference is some are Muslims, and some are Hindus,” the renowned historian said in an exclusive interview. “They come from the same origin and moreover, you are Indo Europeans and you are different from Chinese in every aspect.

“In my opinion instead of spending money and time fighting on each other they should build economic bridges,” he added. “Pakistan and India have been historically together. They should come again together today.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan

“Believe me if the Chinese will one day annex Pakistan and parts of India, they will do the same thing as what they are doing to the Uighurs in China. They are very intolerant and they do not tolerate religion. They don’t tolerate other cultures too. If the Chinese imperialism captures Pakistan and India, there will be no Muslims and Hindus anymore. The Chinese will send both countries to concentration camps and enforce you to speak Chinese.”

Dr Olsi jazexhi was invited by Chinese authorities as a part of a delegation of journalists to showcase their re-education camps in Xinjiang province.  This is how he managed to gain access to two vocational training centers in the city of Exudate and another in Kashgar. The historian has returned from a sponsored trip to Xinxiang province of China where he visited the local Uighur people.

He visited the Chinese re-education camps set up for the Uighur people.

Chinese President Xi Jinping

“The Uighurs are not allowed to practice their religion, nor allowed to observe their faith in that country and if one grows a beard in China one is not allowed access to social media,” said Dr Olsi.

He noted that there is no difference between Taliban, Al-Qaida. and the Chinese authorities.  The radical Islamist Organisations either kill their opponents or forcibly convert them into Islam.  China uses the same approach to de-Islamize Uighurs.  China is brainwashing, jailing, and de-Islamising the Muslims in Xinjiang while simultaneously colonizing Xinjiang by settling Han Chinese colonists who are being brought from other regions of China in order to change the demography of the Muslim majority province of China.

The Chinese are advancing their imperialistic advance through the Himalayas and Central Asia. They are trying to rebuild the silk road and to penetrate through these roads.  The Chinese had not been very successful like the Ancient Greeks who built colonies throughout the sea. They are not as good in the sea as they are good on land.  It is in this context that Xinjiang is at the heart of a big clash between two imperialisms Anglo Imperialism on one hand and Chinese Imperialism on the other.   India, Pakistan, Taliban, are just secondary players in this contest.

Finally, he requested the Indian government to take some Uyghur refuges and to host them in India as it does with Tibetans and Afghans.  By doing so Indians are going to win hearts and minds of people of Muslims of the world.”

‘The Hound Of The Baskervilles’ Ready For Digital Debut

A whimsical parody of the murder mystery ‘The Hound Of The Baskervilles’ by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is all set to make its debut on the digital season of Aadyam, the theatre initiative by the Aditya Birla Group…writes Siddhi Jain.

The play, directed by Aakash Khurana, will be screened via insider.in’s online streaming service making it the second play of Aadyam’s Digital Edition. Adapted by Steven Canny and John Nicholson, this is a comic take on the Sherlock Holmes story that turns a tale of terror into an engaging burlesque.

The cast features Vivek Madan as Sherlock Holmes, Arghya Lahiri as Dr. Watson and Nadir Khan as Sir Charles Baskerville. Celebrating a cult novel from over a century ago, the artists along with the entire production team have created a piece that is thoroughly entertaining while delivering remarkable performances. The gloriously funny parody of this famous story becomes special with greater reason – the three seasoned actors — Madan, Lahiri and Khan — play not 3 but a total of 15 characters.

In a display of pure virtuosity and prowess, the veteran actors take up multiple roles in the play also adding to the comic element of the show. At one instance, Vivek Madan is Sherlock, at another he is the guard, the scary lady, Mrs Barrymore, and several other characters. In similar fashion, Lahiri and Khan also essay multiple roles with brilliance.

According to Shernaz Patel, Aadyam’s Artistic Director, “There is no better way to welcome 2021 than with laughter. Not the intellectual kind. The farcical, slapstick, gloriously silly kind. The kind you can enjoy with the full family, kids definitely included. Produced by one of India’s leading production companies and directed by thespian Akash Khurana, you will marvel at the skill and madness of the three wonderful actors as they change characters, accents, costumes and wigs in the blink of an eye. This fun and inventive take on one of the classics of English literature has been shot the Aadyam way – on a set, in an auditorium, with a multi-camera set up. So if your New Year’s resolution is to forget the blues and start afresh, then be sure not to miss this ridiculously funny spoof.”

On his experience with creating a play for the screens, Director Akash Khurana says, “It’s certainly a very new experience but the actors and the entire crew have been extremely supportive through the making of this play. There was added pressure to perfectly execute this script while maintaining the humour quotient, but considering the collective hard work that went into it, we are very hopeful that the audience will enjoy watching this one as much as we did putting it together for them.”

The play was first staged by Aadyam in 2015 when it received rave reviews not for a riveting murder mystery that the plot originally dwells upon, but for a cheeky, humorous twist that an audience with a sense of humour truly enjoyed.

Show date and timings: January 9, January 16 and January 17 at 7 PM. Tickets on insider.in.

Portugal set to take over EU Presidency

On January 1, 2021, Portugal is scheduled to assume the Presidency of the the EU Council for the fourth time…reports Asian Lite News

Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa said that his country will continue the “excellent work” done by Germany as it takes over the six-month rotating European Union (EU) Presidency.

On January 1, 2021, Portugal is scheduled to assume the Presidency of the the EU Council for the fourth time, reports Xinhua news agency.

In a video message on Wednesday, Costa congratulated German Chancellor Angela Merkel “on the excellent work at the helm of the EU”, highlighting “the joint purchase of vaccines and simultaneous distribution to all member states”, and the “approval of a robust response to the economic and social effects of the pandemic”.

According to Costa, the advances “demonstrate a EU close to its citizens, responding to their fears and meeting their expectations”.

“It is an honour and a huge responsibility for Portugal to receive this testimony from your hands and continue your work,” he said.

Costa said that the Portuguese EU Council Presidency will have “three main priorities”.

The first is “economic and social recovery, which will be driven by climate and digital transitions, factors of growth and the creation of more and better jobs”.

The second is “the development of the EU’s social pillar, creating a solid foundation of confidence that this double transition will be an opportunity for everyone and a guarantee that no one will be left behind”.

Thirdly, Portugal is committed to strengthening the “strategic autonomy of a European Union open to the world”, the Prime Minister added.

“It is now up to us to continue your work, with the motto of the Portuguese Presidency: it is time to act, for a fair, green and digital recovery,” he concluded.

Earlier on Wednesday, Merkel wished the Portuguese Prime Minister “much success”, stressing that Germany “will do everything within its power” to support Portugal.

Merkel said that for Germany “the central challenge was undoubtedly the coronavirus pandemic”, reiterating the importance of the unity of the 27 member states in confronting this challenge.

“I am convinced that together we will be stronger than the virus. This is what we are seeing these days: together Europe is promoting, purchasing and distributing vaccines,” she said, thanking the European Commission for its work and for ensuring that the EU is committed to making vaccines available in all countries, “because the pandemic knows no borders”.

Acute malnutrition in children at record-high

More than 10 million children in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), northeast Nigeria, the Central Sahel, South Sudan and Yemen will suffer from acute malnutrition in 2021, the UN Children’s Fund (Unicef) said.

All of these countries and regions are experiencing “dire humanitarian crises”, while also grappling with intensifying food insecurity, the coronavirus pandemic and, with the exception of the Central Sahel, “a looming famine”, the Unicef said in a statement on Wednesday.

“For countries reeling from the consequences of conflicts, disasters and climate change, Covid-19 has turned a nutrition crisis into an imminent catastrophe,” Unicef Executive Director Henrietta Fore said.

“Families already struggling to feed their children and themselves are now on the brink of famine. We can’t let them be the forgotten victims of 2020,” she added.

Severe acute malnutrition is the most extreme and visible form of under nutrition.

Children with severe acute malnutrition have very low weight for their height and severe muscle wasting.

It is a major cause of death in children under five, and its prevention and treatment are critical to child survival and development.

Through 2020, in spite of Covid-19 challenges, Unicef and its partners continued to deliver lifesaving assistance to the most vulnerable children and their families in the hardest to reach areas through adjustments on the existing programs to maintain and increase access.

With the situation feared to worsen in 2021, Unicef called on humanitarian actors on the ground in these countries as well as the international community to urgently expand access to and support for nutrition, health and water and sanitation services for children and families.

Unicef has appealed for more than $1 billion to support its lifesaving nutrition programs for children in countries affected by humanitarian crises over 2021.

China, EU Strike Trade And Investment Deal

Chinese President Xi Jinping and leaders of the European Union (EU) have announced that the two sides have completed investment agreement negotiations as scheduled.

The announcement was made on Wednesday during a meeting between Xi and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron, President of the European Council Charles Michel and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen via video link, Xinhua news agency reported.

Calling the investment agreement between China and the EU as “balanced, high-standard and mutually beneficial”, Xi said the treaty has shown China’s determination and confidence to push high-level opening up.

“The agreement will provide greater market access, higher level of business environment, stronger institutional guarantees and brighter cooperation prospects for mutual investment,” the Chinese leader said.

The treaty will also greatly boost world economic recovery in the post-pandemic era, enhance the international community’s confidence in economic globalisation and free trade, making significant contributions to the building of an open world economy, Xi added.

Stressing China’s commitment to fostering a new development paradigm will provide more market opportunities and cooperation potential for the EU and the world at large, the President called on the EU to uphold free trade and multilateralism, and provide an open, fair and non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese investors.
