Canada had better watch out!

Canada has thus the dubious distinction of having become a hospitable country for terrorists, gangsters, and radicals. That is to say that one is talking here not only about pro-Khalistan elements but other individuals too, mostly with criminal backgrounds, who reportedly use fake identities and documents to gain entry into Canada and the US … writes Dr Sakariya Kareem

Patrick Brown, the Mayor of Brampton, reportedly told the Canadian media that the police had examined the video showing the float in which two Sikhs were shown killing former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, and concluded that it did not translate into a hate crime.

This statement sums up the attitude of the Canadian authorities towards pro-Khalistani elements operating from Canadian soil. While the freedom of expression is undoubtedly a right, to suggest that Canadian citizens (in this case Sikhs) can go around eulogizing the assassination of a former Indian Prime Minister with the government taking little or no notice sends out a clear signal as to which side of the fence the government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau sits on. This by the way, is not a recent instance, and it is on record that his father Pierre Trudeau refused to extradite a known criminal, who would later be responsible for the bombing of the Air India flight Kanishka over Ireland in 1985, in which 329 people died.

Sidhu Moosewala (left) and accused Satinderjit Singh Brar a.k.a Goldy Brar (right).

Canada has thus the dubious distinction of having become a hospitable country for terrorists, gangsters, and radicals. That is to say that one is talking here not only about pro-Khalistan elements but other individuals too, mostly with criminal backgrounds, who reportedly use fake identities and documents to gain entry into Canada and the US. These criminal gangs intermix with radicals have created a heady mix posing a serious threat not only to countries around the world, but also for the safety of the North American continent at large. Several wanted criminals from the Indian state of Punjab have reportedly used false papers to reach North American shores. Notable among them is Anmol Bishnoi, the younger brother of the notorious gangster Lawrence Bishnoi.

Anmol, accused of being part of the network that executed Sidhu Moosewala, fled India using a forged passport. His blatant disregard for law enforcement was evident when a video of him dancing at a California wedding went viral. For those historically minded, it might be a good thing to recall that Hardeep Singh Nijjar who was killed as a result of a criminal gang war (18 June) outside a Gurudwara in Surrey had also entered Canada in 1997 on a false passport.

Furthermore, there is Goldy Brar, the mastermind behind the Moosewala case, who also obtained a Canadian visitor visa on fake documents, despite having 21 First Information Reports (FIRs) lodged against him in India. Another character in this gallery of gangsters is Rinku Randhawa, who reportedly moved to Canada using forged papers. Arsh Dalla, involved in several violent crimes in India, similarly secured Canadian permanent residency via counterfeit documents. It’s not just gangsters; but Khalistani radicals also seem to find solace in Canada and parts of the US, particularly California. India’s National Investigation Agency had recently released a list of ten Khalistani’s who targeted the Indian consulate in San Francisco.

The surge of these wanted criminals and radicals raises a vital question – is Canada’s immigration system flawed, or is there a larger political game in play? Critics argue that the Trudeau government, under the guise of free speech and human rights, is reluctant to clamp down on these individuals, possibly for political gains. The Liberal Party government headed by Justin Trudeau has a political alignment in the Canadian Parliament with the New Democratic Party which is headed by Jagmeet Singh, a known Khalistan sympathizer.

Yet, these allegations and concerns pose a threat not only to India’s national security but also to the safety of Canadian citizens. The leniency shown in granting visas and the subsequent conversion of visitor visas to work ones, especially for individuals with criminal records, is alarming. While political expediency is understandable, the risks to Canada’s national security are great.

For instance, Canada’s retraction of Sikh extremism from its 2018 terrorist threat report, amidst political pressure, smacked of opportunism and a soft corner for Khalistan elements. Justin Trudeau’s presence at a Khalsa Day event in 2017, the cold Indian reception during his State visit in 2018 and G20 Summit meeting with Prime Minister Modi have all followed a familiar pattern, one that speaks more of Trudeau’s closeness to Khalistan elements in Canada than to better relations with India. Given his public sympathy for the pro-Khalistan Sikhs in Canada, Trudeau’s allegations that India had a hand in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar make sense. But that is not the real reason for this unsubstantiated allegation made on the floor of the House of Commons.

The reason is to hide the spectre of foreign interference from China in Canada, claims senior Canadian journalist, Daniel Boardman. He says in an interview to Asian News International (ANI) that there is an enormous threat of China meddling in Canada. As Justin Trudeau’s Liberal party has during elections sought support from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), the story on India was necessary to move the spectrum away from Chinese foreign involvement.

Boardman traces the Liberal Party’s links to the CCP in the election cycles and alleges that Trudeau made a deal with the Chinese to keep two Canadian citizens in jail in 2018, when Huawei chief Meng Wangzhou was arrested by the RCMP. Boardman correctly surmises that “….in order to shift the spectrum from Chinese foreign interference, we have a story in Canada, which is essentially a story about Pakistani foreign interference, being framed as a story of Indian foreign interference to cover up the real story, which is Chinese interference.”

Earlier in May 2023, Canada had designated Chinese diplomat Zhao Wei as ‘persona non-grata’ following an uproar over allegations of political meddling. This was done because he was threatening the family of sitting MP Micheal Chong. Bordman notes that Trudeau took this action for symbolic reasons.  Boardman told ANI that Canadian foreign policy issues have been jumbled up by the Liberals in the media internally in Canada and sold out to Canadians. The point is that Canada’s reputation as a country in the international community of nations is at stake. By permitting Chinese meddling in domestic politics and playing to the gallery with pro-Khalistani elements, Justin Trudeau is harming his own political future. Pertinently, the influx of criminals and radicals could lead to a severe law and order situation, if not tackled proactively. Canada must reevaluate and strengthen its immigration policies to ensure that its hospitality is not abused by those with malicious intentions.

‘Rishi Sunak Does Not Represent Us’

I worry for the sake of my young family and the British Indian Community that we must not build a country for just a few at the top of the socio-economic chain, but for all – regardless of background. The more one delves into the life of our current PM – the more one sees how far detached from reality he really is … writes Professor Kishan Devani BEM, FRSA

Many across my community (the Indian Community) continue to ask me all over the world, it must be great to have an ‘Indian PM’ of the UK.  My answer to them is simply, NO. What do I have in common with Mr Sunak – absolutely nothing.

Kishan Devani, BEM, FRSA

Was I born to privilege- No, was I privately educated – No, am I worth over £700M – No. These matters may seem futile to some, however, I ask how will he ever understand the issues that the majority of our community faces? For example, does he really know what it feels like to live on a weekly budget – trying to feed one’s children/family, will he ever understand what it feels to arrive here as an immigrant and have to live as a Paying Guest or in a bedsit?

Will he ever understand what it means to borrow money to have to care for your elderly parents? Or to remortgage your home to make ends meet? Of course not, he probably has no idea what it feels like to budget for anything at all. This for me puts him far away from the reality of what 100,000’s of members of our community go through daily in their lives. I for one, feel that our country is crying out for a Prime Minister that is in touch with the needs of the majority of our country – not just the elite.

I worry for the sake of my young family and the British Indian Community that we must not build a country for just a few at the top of the socio-economic chain, but for all – regardless of background. The more one delves into the life of our current PM – the more one sees how far detached from reality he really is.

Whether it is Climate Change, HS2, Immigration or just general economics he is so far off from the realities affecting families like mine and many other families in the British Indian Community, that it pains me to see him in a position to affect our lives. So when the question is asked, whether I should just simply support the PM as I am a British Indian too – I say – Why? We owe it to our future generations to challenge the status quo and not simply follow as blind followers of a cult.

The Conservatives have decimated our country in recent years, whether it be Brexit, the systematic dismantling of our NHS and economic policies that have helped the rich get richer. One needs to understand we are a nation for all, not north, not south. All regions of our UK are one and we must work together – unlike what the Conservatives have tried to do, divide communities across our country.

As it says in Hindu/Vedic Scriptures – ” Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” – “The Whole World is One Family” – these are, our values and this is the type of world I want to live in. One that the Tories and the Leadership of our current PM Rishi Sunak are far off from delivering. Another pillar of the Vedic traditions is the concept of Unity in Diversity – which forms a great part of our lives as a community – this is also something our current Conservative Home Secretary Suella Braverman and PM Rishi Sunak could learn from.

PM Rishi Sunak speaks to guests at a garden reception to celebrate London Tech Week in 10 Downing Street. (Picture by Simon Dawson No 10 Downing Street)

The right-wing dogwhistle, callous policies of this government need to be thoroughly examined, before one simply supports them. In conclusion, the next time someone asks me whether I should just simply support Rishi Sunak as our PM due to the fact we share ethnic backgrounds – I will simply point them to this article, to lay out my rationale of not supporting him/the Tories and the moral obligation we all have as a community to do what is right for our country and not simply follow someone blindly.

UAE Woos French Firms

The UAE offers them various incentives and advantages, including advanced infrastructure and flexible legislation that ensure fair competition…reports Asian Lite News

UAE Minister of Economy Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri has met with the executives, investors and CEOs of major French companies to enhance economic cooperation between Abu Dhabi and Paris at the private sector level.

The meeting was aimed at capitalising on more available opportunities that support the sustainable growth of their economies, especially in the new economy sectors. Frederic Sanchez, President of the Movement of the Enterprises of France (MEDEF), also attended the meeting.

Bin Touq said, “Economic and trade cooperation is the main driver for strengthening the partnership between the two countries and ensuring the prosperity and well-being of our people. Over the past years, we have worked alongside our partners in the French government to provide the private sector with all the tools and capabilities necessary for the prosperity and expansion of their operations. This has reflected positively on the number of companies operating in the markets of the two countries.”

He added that the economic policies approved by the UAE over the last three years, in implementing the wise leadership’s vision, have established a solid, fertile environment for the growth of major French companies, enabling their access to new markets.

The UAE offers them various incentives and advantages, including advanced infrastructure and flexible legislation that ensure fair competition, in addition to a digital services system through which businesses can be easily set up, he explained.

The Minister noted that these factors have made the UAE home to more than 600 French companies that employ more than 30,000 people. They operate in various sectors, including renewable energy, transportation, logistics, hotels, aviation, space, banking, and insurance, among others.

“The UAE is the second largest GCC investor in France and has more than 50 of its companies operating in France in various sectors. We will continue to work with our French partners to increase the number of companies operating in the markets of the two countries, contributing to the creation of thousands of job opportunities,” he added.

Furthermore, Al Marri highlighted that the bilateral relations between the UAE and France have developed significantly in various fields of cooperation under the leaderships of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and President Emmanuel Macron of the French Republic.

The meetings saw Bin Touq elaborate on the pillars of the ‘We the UAE 2031’ vision, which aims to make the UAE a global hub for the new economy, and the steps taken by the UAE government to achieve this goal. For instance, the country is continuously developing its economic legislation and launching innovative initiatives and programs that support the economic climate and attract FDI, especially in the new economy sectors.

In addition, he highlighted the issuance of legislation to protect intellectual property and the launch of an ambitious strategy to attract talent and minds to enhance the UAE’s position as a permanent hub for creativity and innovation.

Al Marri invited French businessmen and startup owners to take advantage of the promising opportunities the UAE economy offers to expand their operations to MENA and GCC markets, thus enhancing the penetration of their goods in these promising markets.

MEDEF is a leading network that includes 173,000 companies and has great economic significance inside and outside France. It supports entrepreneurs and SMEs, representing about 95 percent of the total companies joining its network and provides innovative solutions, initiatives and programs to enable them to achieve sustainable growth.

The Minister of Economy is leading a UAE delegation to France to discuss strengthening economic cooperation in a wide range of vital sectors, most notably renewable energy, tourism, aviation, entrepreneurship, artificial intelligence, space, intellectual property, and the circular economy.

‘Peaceful N-Energy Key Component of Net-Zero Strategy’

Al Kaabi further noted that the UAE welcomes the active discussion of the role of SMRs and advanced nuclear technologies in achieving net zero and supporting energy security…reports Asian Lite News

Ambassador Hamad Al Kaabi, UAE’s Permanent Representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), affirmed that the development of the country’s peaceful nuclear energy sector is a key component of its net-zero strategy, reflecting its commitment to diversifying its energy mix and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

“The nuclear power programme, which, along with renewable energy, will provide 14 GW of clean power for the UAE by 2030,” the Ambassador said while addressing the 67th session of the IAEA General Conference in Vienna.

He added, “As we approach the 28th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), which will take place in the UAE from 30th November – 12th December 2023, we look forward to discussing the role of nuclear energy in tackling climate change and mitigating its impacts,” noting that the UAE’s decision to host COP28 reaffirms its commitment to tackling climate change issues proactively and at various levels.

“In 2023, the UAE updated its National Energy Strategy to include several new goals, including raising the percentage of clean energy in the total energy mix to 30 percent by 2031, and becoming carbon neutral by 2050,” Al Kaabi continued. “The path to net-zero emission systems needs a built-in climate resilience to guarantee the security of energy supply.”

Highlighting the IAEA Technical Cooperation (TC) Programme, he said it provides critical support to the Member States to develop the infrastructure and to build the capacity required for the nuclear energy programme and in other sectors, such as health, agriculture and the environment. “These efforts contribute to achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).”

Al Kaabi further noted that the UAE welcomes the active discussion of the role of SMRs and advanced nuclear technologies in achieving net zero and supporting energy security and sustainability, and supports the IAEA platform on SMRs and their Applications (SMR Platform) and the Nuclear Harmonisation and Standardisation Initiative (NHSI).

On 13th-16th February 2023, the UAE hosted the IAEA International Conference on Effective Nuclear and Radiation Regulatory Systems: Preparing for the Future in a Rapidly Changing Environment.”

During the Conference the UAE announced the launch the UAE Professional Day of Nuclear and Radiation Sector Workers on 16th February, marking the day on which the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) issued a licence in 2020 to operate Unit 1 of the UAE’s Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, Al Kaabi further explained.

He also underscored the UAE’s efforts to support the IAEA’s safeguards system, as it concluded Practical Arrangement with IAEA in March 2023 to provide project-related direct funding and in-kind contributions for the activities of the agency in support of safeguards development.

“I would like to stress that in order to maintain the vital role of the IAEA, it is imperative to provide the IAEA with the required funding. The UAE remains committed to a strong, ongoing partnership with the IAEA in our responsible approach to the development of a national nuclear power programme and to the use of nuclear applications,” Al Kaabi concluded.

H.H. stated that the “Dubai 10X” initiative reaffirms Dubai’s commitment to enhancing government operations, fostering collaboration, and embracing innovative ideas that play a pivotal role in advancing crucial sectors for the present and the future.

He directed work streams within the Dubai government to carry out the endorsed projects, leveraging the diverse national expertise available across all entities. The selection process involved the exchange of expertise and best practices among government work streams, as well as the organisation of more than 25 workshops that brought together diverse government teams to discuss and refine these ideas. Some projects witnessed substantial collaborations of up to 11 government entities joining forces.

The project ideas in this stage were specialised on the future of government services across a wide range of sectors, including transportation, aviation, space, energy, sustainability, infrastructure, trade, finance, health, security, civil defense, community services, among others.

These projects underwent a thorough evaluation process, emphasising specific criteria such as the anticipated future outcomes, implementation timeline, integration potential with other government services, impact across the emirate and enhancement of quality of life for member of the Dubai community.

‘UAE Foreign Policy Built Upon Three Pillars’

Dr. Anwar Gargash said UAE’s foreign policy is built upon Stability, Prosperity and Principles, with geo-economic considerations given priority over geo-political ones….reports Asian Lite News

Dr. Anwar Gargash, Diplomatic Adviser to the UAE President, said the country’s foreign policy is built upon three key pillars, stability, prosperity and principles, with geo-economic considerations given priority over geo-political ones.

Speaking at the 21st Arab Media Forum in a session titled ‘The Arab Region: Future Scenarios’ moderated by Lara Nabhan, Anchor, Al Hadath TV, Dr. Gargash said the UAE’s foreign policy is focused on enhancing regional stability. He underscored the crucial role of regional cooperation and dialogue in addressing common challenges.

He highlighted the leading role of Saudi Arabia and Egypt in the Arab world. He also noted that the UAE works to constantly raise its competitiveness by tapping the potential of the digital economy, artificial intelligence and renewable and sustainable energy.

Highlighting the importance of economic prosperity, Dr. Gargash said raising local competitiveness is one of the UAE’s primary aims. The nation is committed to constantly expanding business partnerships and opening up new economic corridors. The agreement established at the G20 meeting to establish a trade corridor linking India, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Israel and Europe is a significant development for the UAE.

Promoting the nation’s values is another cornerstone of the UAE’s foreign policy, Dr. Gargash said. The empowerment of women and the promotion of tolerance are fundamental values that the nation is keen on advancing, in addition to Islamic and Arab values.

Commenting on the recent attack on Bahraini troops along the Saudi-Yemen border, Dr. Gargash said that despite recent developments that hold the promise of a permanent ceasefire in Yemen, thanks to Saudi efforts, this incident indicates the presence of a faction within the Houthis opposed to reconciliation.

Gargash recently met with UN Special Envoy to Yemen Hans Grundberg and discussed the latest developments in the Yemeni crisis and the efforts to establish favourable conditions for a ceasefire. They have also discussed progress toward a sustainable political solution, which will end the crisis and the humanitarian suffering of the Yemeni people.

Gargash also affirmed the UAE’s support for the international efforts and Grundberg’s work to establish a permanent ceasefire and initiate serious dialogue to reach a sustainable political settlement to the Yemeni crisis, lauding the related efforts of Saudi Arabia.

Meanwhile, he also noted that the UAE is focused on finding common ground with Iran as development and confrontation cannot go hand in hand.

Earlier this week at UN General Assembly, UAE’s Minister of State for International Cooperation, Reem Al Hashimy, renewed the UAE’s demand that Iran end its occupation of the islands of Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb, and Abu Musa. She said: “Our legitimate right to these islands has not diminished and time will not diminish nor extinguish our sovereignty over these islands. We will continue to seek a resolution, either through direct negotiation or through the International Court of Justice. This has been our firm stance for decades.”

Dr. Gargash also expressed the UAE’s keenness to share its development experience with other nations. He added that the UAE is focused on enhancing stability and social and economic openness and ensuring effective judicial institutions and rule of law. Remarkably, for a country with a population of less than 10 million, the UAE boasts a GDP of over $500 billion.

He also emphasised that Arab nations should play a more significant role in Syria. Regarding the rapprochement between Syria and other Arab nations, he said the reintegration of Syria into the Arab League is part of the multilateral body’s new strategic direction regarding the country.

He highlighted the importance of revitalising Arab collaboration and reshaping past policies driven by ideology.

Regarding COP28, Dr. Gargash remarked that the event is of utmost importance to the UAE as it addresses one of the most critical challenges facing humanity. He pledged that the UAE would make a significant impact and leave its mark on the event.

Esha Singh’s Olympic Dream Fuels Asian Games Quest

Esha secured a silver medal for India in the Women’s 25m Pistol Individual event at the Asian Games, following her earlier contribution to the country’s gold medal victory in the Team event during the morning alongside her teammates…reports Asian Lite News

Esha Singh, who took up shooting at the age of 9 after visiting a range in her hometown Hyderabad, had set winning a medal in the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou as one of her main aims for this year besides qualifying for the 2024 Olympics.

On Wednesday, she fulfilled her first dream of winning an Asian Games medal — with a double bonanza bagging gold and silver in the Women’s 25m Pistol Team and Individual events, respectively, here at the Fuyang Yinhu Sports Centre.

Esha won a silver medal for India in the Women’s 25m Pistol Individual event at the Asian Games after helping the country bag gold in the Team event in the morning along with teammates Manu Bhaker and Rhythm Sangwam.

Hangzhou, Sept 27 (ANI): Union Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs Anurag Thakur posted this photo on X (formerly twitter) congratulating Indian shooters Manu Bhaker, Esha Singh and Rhythm Sangwan for winning gold medal in women’s 25 m pistol team event at the ongoing Asian Games, in Hangzhou on Wednesday. (ANI Photo)

Qualifying fifth among six-shooters in the Individual event after the rapid round in which she managed only 294 points while Manu shot a brilliant 296 and continued to lead with 590-28x, Esha came up with a brilliant performance when it mattered as she finished second.

Esha, who along with the experienced Manu, had qualified for the final in the Individual, shot a score of 34 points and finished second behind China’s Rui Liu, who set a new Asian Games record with a total of 38 points, improving the previous mark of 34 points set by India’s Rahi Sarnobat and set in Jakarta/Palembang (Indonesia) in the 2018 edition.

Korea’s Jiin Yang took the bronze medal with a score of 29 points after winning a shoot-off with China’s Sixuan Feng. India’s Manu Bhaker lost out on a medal and finished fifth.

“I feel very grateful and proud of myself for the way I performed. I don’t think I can put into words how I feel right now because emotions are exploding. I am just very happy,” Esha said after winning two medals on Wednesday.

Esha, 18, who trains at Olympian Gagan Narang’s Gun For Glory Academy in Hyderabad, literally claimed glory on Wednesday by winning two medals, just like compatriot Sift Kaur Samra, the rifle shooter from Punjab, who bagged gold in Women’s 50m Rifle 3-positions Individual with a world record and silver in the Team competition.

Esha was placed in joint-second position after the precision round in the Women’s 25m Pistol Individual competition as Manu led with 294-14x. Esha had a score of 292-9x, the same as China’s Feng Sixuan. She came up with 294 in the rapid section and was placed fifth with a score of 586-17x.

But the final was a different story altogether as Esha went from strength to strength while Manu lost her way and ended fifth.

In the first competitive stage, Esha shot 10 points and moved up to the joint third spot with China’s Sixuan Feng. Another Chinese Rui Liu shot into the lead with 13 points while Korea’s Jiin Yang was in second with 11 points. Manu managed a score of 9 in this stage and slipped to fifth.

Competitors from Taipei and Singapore were eliminated while a shooter from Iran went out next as Rui Liu, Esha and Jiin Yang maintained their top three positions.

In the next round, Manu was eliminated as she ended with a score of 16 points. There was a tie between Korea’s Yang and China’s Feng Sixhuan and the Korean emerged on top in the shoot-off, to set off a fight for the second spot with Esha. However, the Indian shooter maintained her composure and eventually finished with the silver medal.

The young shooter from Hyderabad said she made some technical mistakes she should have avoided. “There were a few technical things that I should have done (better) but overall I feel I did a very good performance.”

Having fulfilled her first dream, Esha will now be looking forward to getting the next target — the Paris Olympic Games. For that, she or any of the other pistol shooters will have to bag a quota place for India. That’s now is the 18-year-old’s next target.

‘EVs Not Clean Until India Shifts to Renewables’

R.C. Bhargava, the Chairman of Maruti Suzuki Ltd. said that the electric cars will not be clean until India gets at least 50 per cent of its electricity from renewable sources…reports Asian Lite News

The carbon footprint of electric cars in India would be much bigger than that of hybrid cars because in the country, 75 per cent of the electricity is made from coal, according to R.C. Bhargava, the Chairman of Maruti Suzuki Ltd.

He made the remarks while addressing the 50th National Management Convention organised by All India Management Association (AIMA).

Bhargava said that the electric cars will not be clean until India gets at least 50 per cent of its electricity from renewable sources.

Until then, the hybrid cars will be cleaner, he said, adding that even shifting to CNG cars is a better option, as CNG is a cleaner fuel than petrol.

“May be India should move to ethanol, hydrogen and fuel cell options instead of going for electric cars,” he said.

Talking about coming slightly late to the electric car market, Bhargava said that Maruti had built an electric version of the Wagon R but its cost was too high, and now Maruti would come to the market with larger electric models which could be more viable.

However, he said that even with six electric models, the share of electric cars in Maruti’s sales would be only 15 per cent to 20 per cent.

He pointed out that today, the share of electric cars in Indian car market is only 2 per cent.

On Maruti’s decision to stop diesel car production, Bhargava said that while the government is not preventing anyone from making diesel cars, the compliance with CAFE standards will make their costs exorbitant.

On the subject of the shift of the mass market from small hatchbacks to SUVs, Bhargava said that though the whole market is not shifting, the small car market is not growing anymore. He said that it is because of that the growth of Indian car market is only about 5 per cent a year instead of 8 per cent.

Talking about automotive supply chain issues, Mr Bhargava said that currently there are no production constraints because of semiconductor shortage. However, he regretted that all electronics for Indian cars have to be imported.

“India needs to get more component makers to make in India for India and for global supply chains,” he said while also highlighting the lack of local electronics suppliers as the only weakness in India’s auto components supply chain.

Bhargava expressed confidence about the growth of India’s car market. H

e said that there is no other market in the world with the same growth potential, as other major markets such as the US, Japan and China have become saturated and rely on replacement sales.

Talking about competition in Indian car market, Mr Bhargava said that Indian market has been very competitive for the past 15-20 years and now it is set to get even more competitive as global car makers can see an opportunity in the changing car technology and regulations.

He said that Maruti will try to keep a large part of the Indian car market under its control by offering the best of technology, reliability, and after-sale service.

On the issue of stagnant growth of Indian manufacturing sector despite the increased ease of business and production-linked investment scheme, Bhargava said that the state government bureaucracies are still stuck in the licence and control mindset and even the entrepreneurs are more focused on accumulating personal wealth instead of growing their companies.

“Time is not valued by state bureaucracies… and entrepreneurs cannot lay the blame only on labour laws,” he said. Manufacturing sector growth is only 5 per cent while India needs a 12 per cent annual growth, he said.

Talking about India’s limited success in benefiting from the China plus one strategy of global companies, Bhargava said that India is not the only option for them, and many of them are moving to Vietnam.

Regarding the new safety regulations such as Bharat NCAP, Bhargava said that so long as it is easy to get driving licence without tests, it will be difficult to bring down the accidents and deaths on Indian roads.

He said that India has no system of mandatory vehicle fitness certification for cars and scooters. He pointed out that most of the road deaths involve two-wheeler riders and pedestrians.

Bhargava is confident about the future of Indian car industry though the expensive transition to new technology and regulations are likely to keep its growth at about 5 per cent for the next decade, provided there are no unexpected shocks to the economy.

The session was also livestreamed on AIMA’s social media channels.
