UN lauds Indo-Pak decision on ceasefire

The Secretary-General is encouraged by the joint statement issued by the militaries of India and Pakistan on their agreement to observing the ceasefire at the Line of Control in Kashmir and engaging through established mechanisms…reports Arul Louis.

India and Pakistan have entered into a historic decision by agreeing to observe ceasefire pacts in LoC. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and General Assembly President Volkan Bozkir have welcomed the joint statement by India and Pakistan reaffirming their commitment to upholding the ceasefire along the Line of Control in Kashmir.

Guterres’s Spokesperson Stephane Guterres said on Thursday, “The Secretary-General is encouraged by the joint statement issued by the militaries of India and Pakistan on their agreement to observing the ceasefire at the Line of Control in Kashmir and engaging through established mechanisms. He hopes that this positive step will provide an opportunity for further dialogue.”

Asked if Guterres intended to talk to the leaders of the two countries about a dialogue, Dujarric said, “There’s no plan that I’m aware of, but the Secretary-General is always available for (extending) his good offices between any Member States who would request it.”

Bozkir “wholeheartedly welcomes today’s ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan”, his Spokesperson Brenden Varma said.

Joint statement

“Their stated commitment to achieve sustainable peace through addressing each other’s core issues and concerns sets an example for other countries and demonstrates the General Assembly’s values,” Varma said without explaining the Assembly’s role.

If anything, the Assembly has been used by Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and his diplomats in a manner that could worsen the situation through their rhetoric but they have failed to get Assembly to take note of their cause.

The joint statement reaffirming the ceasefire was issued by the two neighbour’s directors-general of military operations (DGSMO).

Their said that after a “free, frank and cordial” assessment of the situation along the border they agreed “In the interest of achieving mutually beneficial and sustainable peace along the borders, the two DGsMO agreed to address each other’s core issues and concerns which have propensity to disturb peace and lead to violence.”

WHO warns of ‘post Covid’ health risks

Post Covid health issues should be given more attention as new variants are emerging globally…reports Asian Lite News

World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Europe Hans Kluge voiced concerns over “long-Covid” or “post-Covid” symptoms at a virtual press conference on Thursday.

“The disability following SARS-CoV-2 infection lingers on for months with severe social, economic, health and occupational consequences,” said Kluge, who identified the issue as “a clear priority for WHO, and of the utmost importance.”

According to Kluge, a total of 38 million infection cases had been registered in the European Region since the pandemic began, and “one in ten Covid-19 sufferers remain unwell after 12 weeks, and many for much longer”.

Zulema Riquelme, a 46-year-old nursing technician, receives a shot of the COVID-19 vaccine at the Metropolitan Hospital in Santiago, Chile

“Yet stories of those who should have ‘recovered’, but whose lives were still affected by debilitating symptoms soon emerged. Regrettably, some were met with disbelief or lack of understanding,” said Kluge.

Professor Martin McKee, from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, also speaking at the press conference, provided further insight into “post-Covid” symptoms.

Varying combination

McKee described them as “a varying combination of overlapping symptoms, including chest and muscle pain, fatigue, shortness of breath, and what patients describe as brain fog.”

“Although many viral infections are self-limiting, making people feel unwell for only a few days before clearing up, others cause long-term problems. Early on, we realized that this new coronavirus was not just causing pneumonia. In some patients it was attacking many different body systems, such as the heart and blood vessels, the brain, and the kidneys,” said McKee.

In response to the prevalence of the lingering after-effects of Covid-19, Kluge acknowledged that the WHO had earlier in the month “hosted a consultation on post-Covid-19 conditions, focusing on recognition, research and rehabilitation.”

In addition, Kluge also confirmed that WHO Europe would soon be convening a conference with the chief medical officers of all 53 countries in the European Region to set out a regional strategy to tackle the issue.

“As we learn more, we need to make sure patients who have had suspected or confirmed Covid-19, who have persistent — new or changing symptoms — should have access to follow-up care. This is where primary health-care has a particularly strong role to play,” said Kluge.

The regional director further emphasised the need for the region’s medical authorities to seriously “listen and understand” the sufferers of post-Covid conditions, if they intended to tackle it successfully.

“I am calling upon you, countries and institutions in the European Region, to come together as part of an integrated research agenda, using harmonised data collection tools and study protocols. This will be key to maximize the impact of treatment and improve long-term outcomes for patients,” said Kluge.

Ceasefire along LoC

A positive step towards greater peace and stability

India and Pakistan agree for strict observance of all agreements, understandings and cease firing along the LoC and all other sectors with effect from midnight February 24, reports Asian Lite News

India and Pakistan reviewed the situation along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir, and agreed for strict observance of all agreements, and understandings, Indian Army said.
A joint statement issued in New Delhi and Islamabad. It states that the Director Generals of Military Operations of India and Pakistan held discussions over the established mechanism of hotline contact.

“The two sides reviewed the situation along the Line of Control and all other sectors in a free, frank and cordial atmosphere,” the statement said.
It further points out that in the interest of achieving mutually beneficial and sustainable peace along the borders, the two DGMOs agreed to address each other’s core issues and concerns which have the propensity to disturb peace and lead to violence.

Both sides agreed for strict observance of all agreements, understandings and cease firing along the LoC and all other sectors with effect from midnight February 24 and February 25, 2021.
“Both sides reiterated that existing mechanisms of hotline contact and border flag meetings will be utilised to resolve any unforeseen situation or misunderstanding,” the statement says.

Pakistan-promoted terror still a threat

Indian Army Chief General MM. Naravane, while speaking at a webinar organised by the Vivekananda International Foundation, says that there is definitely a great improvement in the internal security situation in Jammu and Kashmir. He, however, states that Pakistan-promoted terror still remains a threat.

Indian Army Chief notes that Pakistan is committed to the strategy of supporting terrorism in all its forms as terrorist launch pads continue to be operated and terrorists continue to be there on the other side of the LoC looking for an opportunity to cross over.
General Naravane expressed confidence that with continued engagement with Pakistan, there could be some sort of an understanding because unsettled borders and violence on the borders help no one.

“We always want peace and tranquility in our border areas, whether it be the western front or the northern front and the Line of Actual Control. Or whether it is on the Indo-Myanmar border, we are always looking for peace and tranquility and our role is to ensure that so as the rest of the nation can develop,” he said.

No thinning of troops along LoC

There is no proposal of thinning of troops along Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir as Pakistan has not stopped terrorism, Indian Army said. The Army also denotes that the situation along the northern borders has no bearing on Line of Control/Western Front.

“Our endeavor is to achieve peace and stability which is beneficial for the region and specially for the population residing along the LoC, this is an attempt to bring the violence levels down,” the Indian Army added.
It also states that DGMO of India and Pakistan Army interact regularly over the established mechanism of hotline.

There is trust deficit with Pakistan, said the force stating: “We have a history of bitter experiences with Pakistan. The peace processes in the past have been derailed either because of acts of terror or Pakistan Army’s belligerence. We are alive to this reality and we all remain prepared to meet any eventuality. However we remain cautiously optimistic. Peace along LoC is mutually beneficial.”

Manjrekar against censoring OTT content

Censoring content really affects creativity of the artist?

Covid pandemic has changed the whole structure of every field into a new style which is simply called as ‘new normal’. But for cinema its sure that OTT can never give the real theatre experience.

I have no worries because my series is one which the entire family can sit and watch together without feeling uncomfortable…Mahesh speaks with Ahana Bhattacharya.

Filmmaker Mahesh Manjrekar does not support the idea of censoring OTT content. At the same time, he feels filmmakers should be responsible and not take advantage of lack of censorship in the digital space.

1962: The War In The Hills

Manjrekar’s upcoming web series 1962: The War In The Hills, is a 10-episode war drama that offers a glimpse into the lives of soldiers who stood rock solid against Chinese troops, dedicating their lives for the security of the nation.

“I feel we should be very particular and careful about what we want to show. I have no worries because my series is one which the entire family can sit and watch together without feeling uncomfortable. But I feel we should be a little more responsible about what we are showing.

Yes, I would not like to see censorship on OTT content but there are some people who really take advantage of this,” Mahesh Manjrekar told.

The filmmaker also feels that OTT platforms should not be a reason of insecurity for cinema theatres because the two can easily coexist.

“This has been an argument for years now. These can easily exist together. Nothing can replace cinema halls. This debate also happened in the past when television had started gaining popularity. I don’t see cinema suffering because of OTT. We should not lose our sleep thinking OTT will finish the future of cinema halls, it won’t,” he said.

Opening up about his series, Manjrekar shared: “The series is a fictional take on the war of 1962. However, more than the war, we have concentrated on the human side of the soldiers. Sometimes we might feel that a soldier’s duty is to protect us and he doesn’t have any emotions, but he has. He is vulnerable and close to his family just like us. But what makes him different from us is the fact that he has the will to die so that we are safe. I’ve tried to look into the emotional aspect of all those soldiers who fought that war.”

The series has been shot in Ladakh in extreme weather conditions. Recalling his experience of the shoot, Manjrekar said: “Yes it was difficult shooting in the terrain. There was a lot of physical activity involved, so we had to somehow acclimatise ourselves to that condition and then start shooting. But it was fun because everybody was so charged up to bring this chapter of history in front of the audience!”

The web series has an ensemble cast including Abhay Deol, Akash Thosar, Sumeet Vyas, Rohan Gandotra, Annup Soni, Meiyang Chang, Mahie Gill, Rochelle Rao and Hemal Ingle in key roles. It will stream on Disney + Hotstar VIP and Disney + Hotstar Premium from February 26.

FATF keeps Pakistan on grey list

The global watchdog has strongly urged Pakistan to swiftly complete its full action plan before June 2021, reports Asian Lite News

In a major blow to Imran Khan-led government, the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), a global watchdog against money laundering and terror financing, has retained Pakistan in the ‘grey list’.

The decision was taken after a three-day meeting of the multilateral watchdog which started on Monday under the German Presidency of Dr Marcus Pleyer.

The global watchdog has strongly urged Pakistan to swiftly complete its full action plan before June 2021. It noted that Pakistan has now largely addressed 24 of the 27 action items.

Mr Pleyer said that Pakistan has made “significant progress” but “some serious deficiencies remain” and all these deficiencies are “in the realm of terror financing”, according to a report from the Hindustan Times.

Google, FB must pay for news

Australian initiatives may inspire more countries to tight control over big techs

This legislation will help level the playing field and see Australian news media businesses paid for generating original content,”said Josh Frydenberg…reports Asian Lite News

Australia’s parliament passed the News Media and Digital Platforms Mandatory Bargaining Code on Thursday

The passed amendments targeted at making digital platforms like Facebook and Google pay for news content on the their platform.

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said in a statement that the Code, hailed by him as “world-leading” and “a significant microeconomic reform”, provides a framework for “good faith negotiations” between the parties and “a fair and balanced arbitration process” to resolve outstanding disputes.

“This is a significant milestone. This legislation will help level the playing field and see Australian news media businesses paid for generating original content,” he said on Twitter.

According to him, there was progress by both Google and more recently Facebook in reaching commercial arrangements with Australian news media businesses.

“Importantly, the code encourages parties to undertake commercial negotiations outside the Code,” he said in the statement.

Big techs oppose

While Facebook and Google had opposed the code, Microsoft had welcomed it.

“This new law is a big step forward. It helps ensure publishers and journalists get paid a fairer share for their work. Australia has shown what’s possible and other democracies around the world can build on their ideas,” Microsoft President Brad Smith said in a tweet on Thursday.

On Wednesday, Facebook said that it plans at least $1 billion in the news industry over the next three years.

The announcement came just days after it decided to restore news on Facebook for Australians, who were blocked from sharing or accessing news on the platform recently.

“After further discussions, we are satisfied that the Australian government has agreed to a number of changes and guarantees that address our core concerns about allowing commercial deals that recognize the value our platform provides to publishers relative to the value we receive from them,” Facebook said in an updated statement on Monday.

“As a result of these changes, we can now work to further our investment in public interest journalism and restore news on Facebook for Australians in the coming days.”
