Iran slams new sanctions

United States applied sanctions on a procurement agent in Iran and his companies for their role in supporting Tehran’s ballistic missile programme….reports Asian Lite News

New US sanctions are proof that Washington is taking every opportunity to apply pressure on the Iranian people, foreign ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said on Thursday.

On Wednesday, the United States applied sanctions on a procurement agent in Iran and his companies for their role in supporting Tehran’s ballistic missile programme.

“This move is another sign of the US government’s malice towards the Iranian people, as it continues the failed policy of maximum pressure against Iran,” he said.

Israel, US Discuss Iran Issue

Israel, US to work together

Israel and the United States will cooperate in preventing a nuclear-armed Iran despite disagreements they have over an emerging nuclear deal, Israel’s foreign minister Yair Lapid said.

“We have disagreements about a nuclear agreement and its consequences, but open and honest dialogue is part of the strength of our friendship,” Yair Lapid said in Jerusalem during a joint press conference with visiting US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

“Israel and the United States will continue to work together to prevent a nuclear Iran, Blinken said.

Iran bans women from football stadium

Iran has once again denied women entry to a football stadium to watch an international match, leaving hundreds of ticketed fans locked out, Iranian media said. The World Cup qualifier against Lebanon on Tuesday night, won 2-0 by Iran, was played at the Imam Reza stadium in the northeastern city of Mashhad. “About 2,000 Iranian women, who had bought tickets for the Iran-Lebanon match, were present in the perimeter of Imam Reza stadium, but could not enter the stadium,” ISNA news agency said.

“For this match, 12,500 tickets were sold, of which 2,000 were for women,” it added.

Mohsen Davari, governor of Mashhad, told IRIB state television: “I apologise that many people couldn’t enter the stadium… Unfortunately, a large number of people outside the stadium were deprived of watching the game.”

In the face of the controversy, President Ebrahim Raisi on Wednesday ordered the interior ministry to look into the incident.

In January, women were allowed to attend an international for the first time in almost three years, for a World Cup qualifier against Iraq.

The Islamic republic has generally barred female spectators from football and other sports stadiums since it was established in 1979.

Clerics, who play a major role in decision-making, argue women must be shielded from the masculine atmosphere and sight of semi-clad men.

But world football’s governing body FIFA ordered Iran in September 2019 to allow women access to stadiums without restriction and in numbers to be determined according to demand for tickets.

The FIFA directive, threatening Iran’s suspension from competitions, came after a fan, Sahar Khodayari, died having set herself on fire in fear of being jailed after trying to attend a match in disguise.

She had reportedly been detained in 2018 as she tried to enter a stadium dressed as a male.

Biden stands by Garcetti despite Senate stalemate

Garcetti’s nomination was approved by the Senate Foreign Relations committee which held a hearing in December 2021 on his nomination and heard his testimony and questioned him…writes Arul Louis

President Joe Biden is standing by Eric Garcetti whose nomination to be the Ambassador to India has hit a roadblock at the Senate, according to a White House official.

“The President has confidence in Mayor Garcetti (and) he believes he will be an excellent representative in India,” White House Communications Director Kate Bedingfield said on Wednesday.

Two Republican Senators have blocked the Senate from voting on the nomination of Garcetti, who is the mayor of Los Angeles, over allegations that he knew about reports of sexual harassment by a former senior staff member and advisor but failed to act.

And some Democrats are ambivalent about backing him in the Senate which has to approve appointments of Ambassadors.

Garcetti’s nomination was approved by the Senate Foreign Relations committee which held a hearing in December 2021 on his nomination and heard his testimony and questioned him.

Meanwhile with several crises, Afghanistan and Ukraine among them, buffeting US foreign policy, the ambassadorship in New Delhi remains vacant.

“This is an urgent national-security moment,” Garcetti told Bloomberg last week.

“I think our country deeply feels that right now — and the importance of having someone on the ground in India.”

The US has been uneasy about India not voting at the UN to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and its plans to buy cheap oil from Moscow.

Earlier this month the full Senate approved the nomination of career diplomat Donald Blome to be the Ambassador to Pakistan.

The Foreign Relations Committee had approved his nomination at the same time as Garcetti’s.

Asked at the daily White House briefing about the stalled nomination, Bedingfield said: “I would remind you that his nomination advanced unanimously with bipartisan support in committee, and we’re continuing to engage with Senators and working to earn bipartisan support for his nomination and believe he should receive a vote in the Senate expeditiously.”

The highly partisan Senate is evenly split between the Democrats and the Republicans, and he would need the support of every Democrat along with the tie-breaking vote of Vice President Kamala Harris unless some Republicans come to his rescue.

According to Politico, full Democrat support is in doubt because senators from the party have “privately raised concerns” about the allegations.

Politico said that Democrat Senator Kyrsten Sinema “has offered doubts” and according to her spokesperson, she was “doing due diligence” on him.

The Arizona Republic reported that Senator Mark Kelly was “joining other Democratic senators expressing concerns” about Garcetti.

The allegations against Garcetti arise from a case filed by a policeman against the city.

The policeman has charged in the suit that Garcetti’s former advisor and senior staffer Rick Jacobs had harassed him while he was in Garcetti’s security detail.

Garcetti was asked about it when he appeared before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and he had denied knowing about the allegations against Jacobs.

Republican Senator Chuck Grassley, who put a hold on Garcetti’s nomination is conducting an investigation into allegations of misconduct against Jacobs and if the mayor had known about them.

Grassley told The Los Angeles Times he didn’t have a definite date when the probe would be completed and that it could be after the Senate recess which ends on April 25.

The newspaper said that some other staff in Garcetti’s office had also made allegations against Jacobs.

Some of the senators are waiting for the outcome of the probe before deciding if they should vote for Garcetti, according to media reports.

Democrat Senator Mazie Hirono told the Los Angeles Times” “I understand that he testified he didn’t know anything about it. I’d just like to get further corroboration on that situation.”

But Democrat Senator Jeanne Shaheen, who questioned Garcetti about the allegations during his confirmation hearing, told the newspaper that she was “satisfied” with his assertion that he was unaware of Jacobs’ behaviour.

Republican Senator Joni Ernst has said that she will also be placing a hold on the nomination.

Politico said that a State Department staffer had met with key aides of Democratic senators in a bid to propel the nomination.

According to Politico, the staffer told them that “it was imperative that Garcetti be confirmed soon to help engage India in addressing Russian aggression”.

‘UAE a leader in women’s representation in governance’

“The UAE is a leader in the participation of women in governments and the multilateralism,” said the Executive Secretary of the UN Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), noting that nine out of 33 ministers of the UAE government are women…reports Asian Lite News

In an exclusive interview with the Emirates News Agency (WAM), Preeti Sinha stated that the future of governments will not only focus on the role of women but also on the youth, as their growing population has to join parliaments and guide governance in the future.

“We are moving towards a changing ‘world order’, and the UAE will be a focal point,” the Executive Secretary of the UN Capital Development Fund told WAM on the sidelines of the World Government Summit (WGS).

“The UNCDF are financing the world’s 46 least developed countries (LDCs), most of them in Africa. I believe that the UAE’s role in supporting the development sector in Africa [will all get very pertinent], and we’re looking forward to this partnership with the UAE.”

About the future of governments, Sinha said, “One of the features I believe is already happening and again the UAE is a leader in, is the participation of women in governments and the multilateralism,” adding that the future of governments will not only focus on the role of women but also on the youth.

Asked about the UNCDF efforts in supporting countries, she noted that the organisation has recently helped Senegal create a new policy for Public-Private-Partnerships (PPP), which facilitated investment flows into the country.

Sinha explained that the UNCDF is working in areas such as inclusive digital economies, local development finance and investment finance, which will help governments access global capital markets.

Regarding the business opportunities in the next stage, the UNCDF Executive Secretary said, “I believe that the digital world offers many opportunities for the youth in digital companies and SMEs that use the mobile technologies. Even in a country like Afghanistan, which we are helping, 80 percent of households have a mobile phone.”

“We’re looking at ways of digital payment and inclusive economies where agriculture healthcare (services) can be delivered by digital mechanisms. However, across the world, we work on job skills, and we feel jobs in the green economies will grow, and that’s what we want to promote,” she said.

The Executive Secretary concluded by saying that the UNCDF is also promoting peace and is investing in solar energy companies to build small solar energy plants that could provide energy, and employment for the youth.

More well-wishers are expected to flock to the site in the remaining three days to be part of the world fair’s closing action and entertainment – including what promises to be an unforgettable closing ceremony, complete with fireworks, air shows and world-class performers.

The world fair experienced the busiest weekend across its entire six months driving the total number of visits to 22,937,830.

This means the first World Expo in the region has fulfilled its commitment to attract between 22.9 million and 25.4 million visits, a target range set out in the registration dossier that was officially ratified by Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) member states in 2015, and a remarkable achievement in the context of the global Covid-19 pandemic, a statement issued on Tuesday said.

The last day of Expo 2020 Dubai, on Thursday, will be a historic one, welcoming the UAE Air Force’s Fursan Al Emarat aerobatics team, before an unforgettable climax as Expo hands the baton to the next generation, with a youth-focused ceremony that will see global music icons Christina Aguilera, Norah Jones and Yo-Yo Ma perform beneath Al Wasl’s iconic dome.

Also taking the stage will be the Expo 2020 World String Ensemble and talented Italian pianist Eleonora Constantini. Visitors will be able to watch on more than 20 giant screens across the site, including at the Jubilee Stage, Dubai Millennium Amphitheatre, Festival Garden and various Country Pavilions.

At the ceremony, Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, UAE Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence and Commissioner General of Expo 2020 Dubai, will hand the BIE flag to His Excellency Ambassador Jai-chul Choi and His Excellency Dimitri Kerkentzes, respectively President and Secretary General of the General Assembly of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), who will present it to representatives of Expo 2025 Osaka.

Celebrations will continue throughout the night, with firework displays at 12.00am and 3.00am GST, before Expo 2020 Dubai closes its entry portals for the final time.

Biden vows $500mn aid to Ukraine

Zelensky said on Twitter following the call that he and Biden “shared assessment of the situation on the battlefield and at the negotiating table….reports Asian Lite News

President Joe Biden told his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, that the US will provide Ukraine with $500 million in “direct budgetary aid”, the White House said.

On Wednesday, White House said Biden told Zelensky the US “intends to provide the Ukrainian government with $500 million in direct budgetary aid” on the call, which lasted about an hour to end at 12.03 p.m., according to a pool reporter covering the White House.

“The leaders discussed how the United States is working around the clock to fulfil the main security assistance requests by Ukraine, the critical effects those weapons have had on the conflict, and continue efforts by the US with allies and partners to identify additional capabilities to help the Ukrainian military defend its country,” Xinhua news agency quoted the White House as saying.

Zelensky said on Twitter following the call that he and Biden “shared assessment of the situation on the battlefield and at the negotiating table. Talked about specific defensive support, a new package of enhanced sanctions, macro-financial and humanitarian aid”.

Ukraine sends buses to evacuate Mariupol residents

Ukraine said Thursday it was sending dozens of buses to evacuate civilians from the besieged city of Mariupol after a Russian ceasefire announcement, but dismissed Kremlin promises to scale back attacks on the capital saying forces were simply regrouping to target the east.

Tens of thousands of civilians are trapped in besieged Mariupol with little food, water or medicine, and previous attempts to agree a humanitarian corridor have failed, despite international pressure.

But on Thursday, Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk said buses were heading to the city, where Russia said it would observe a ceasefire from 10:00 am (0700 GMT).

“Tonight, we were informed by the International Committee of the Red Cross that Russia is ready to open access” to a humanitarian corridor from Mariupol to Zaporizhzhia via the Russian-controlled port of Berdiansk, she said in video posted on Telegram.

The prospect of an evacuation from the destroyed city came as Russia continued to shell the capital Kyiv and Chernigiv despite having vowed to “reduce” military activity by “a large margin”.

President Volodymyr Zelensky told his war-torn nation to brace for a new Russian onslaught in the eastern Donbas region.

“We don’t believe anyone, not a single beautiful phrase,” Zelensky said in a late-night video message. “There is an accumulation of Russian troops for new strikes in Donbas and we are preparing for it.”

“We will fight for every metre of our land,” he said.

In five weeks of brutal fighting Russian forces have been humbled by dogged Ukrainian resistance, and forced to rethink any ambitions to sack the capital or overthrow the democratically elected government.

Western intelligence agencies have been keen to underscore Russia’s military failings, and to push suggestions that President Vladimir Putin is being misled by his own fearful advisors about battlefield reverses.

“We’ve seen Russian soldiers — short of weapons and morale — refusing to carry out orders, sabotaging their own equipment and even accidentally shooting down their own aircraft,” Britain’s GCHQ spy agency chief Jeremy Fleming on Thursday, after similar claims from the White House.

Citing US intelligence, White House Communications Director Kate Bedingfield said Putin “felt misled by the Russian military”.

Military experts believe that with thousands of Russian troops killed and many thousands more injured, Moscow has no choice but to ditch efforts to advance simultaneously along multiple axes in the north, east and south.

Its focus instead has turned towards the east, and capturing more towns and cities in Donbas including Mariupol — even as the long-range assault on other cities continues.
