India-US ties has capability, potential, says Jaishankar

Jaishankar also had meetings with the American business community. He described his visit as a very comfortable one during which he had good conversations…reports Asian Lite News

India and the United States, the world’s two largest democracies, do not share a narrow relationship only devoted to bilateral gains, but one that impacts the rest of the world, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said.

He said both countries have recognised that this is a relationship of great capability and potential and there is still a lot of room for it to grow.

“If you look at the India-US relationship, it’s not a narrow relationship only devoted to each other’s gains. Our relationship today impacts the rest of the world, definitely does the Indo-Pacific,” Jaishankar told a group of Indian reporters on Wednesday as he concluded his four-day official trip to the American capital.

Starting with an interaction with the diaspora on Sunday, Jaishankar over the next four days met his American counterpart, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan: and five lawmakers including Senator Mark Warner and Congressman Ami Bera.

Jaishankar also had meetings with the American business community. He described his visit as a very comfortable one during which he had good conversations.

“There are a lot of countries who look to us individually or bilaterally, some part of the betterment, which they hope for, the solutions which the world is searching for, in many respects,” he said.

“Bilateral, a very solid, positive, productive bilateral conversation, but framed in the context of larger global challenges. There’s a high degree of convergence on how we look at those challenges, we may articulate it a little bit differently,” he said.

“It’s natural our position’s will not be identical, our priorities may sometimes be a little bit different. But again, the good part of the relationship is today, that we understand that we have to make space for each other, and that we can work with each other, even if we do not entirely agree on every aspect of every issue,” said the minister.

Jaishankar said overall the India-US ties are in a good place.

“If you look, our trades been doing well, our political exchanges have been very solid. There might be some process issues on visas, but in terms of actual movement of people, it’s on a longer timeframe again, being quite positive,” he said, adding that the student numbers are also strong.

“So, there’s really a lot that we can look at and credit ourselves with,” he said.

“But having said that both sides have recognised this is a relationship of great capability and potential. There’s still a lot of room for it to grow. There are new avenues that we could look at. And part of the reason for the meeting with the ambassador organised with the National Science Foundation was really, how do we look at science and technology and research and collaboration and critical and emerging technologies, and really create some big broad avenues for further collaboration?” he said.

India has offered its help to the United States to address the issue of massive American visa backlogs, he said and hoped that things would improve soon.

Jaishankar raised the issue of backlog in American visa appointments during his meeting with the Secretary of State Blinken on Tuesday.

“To Secretary Blinken, I suggested that if there was something we could do from the Indian government, to help the US come and deal with this issue in a better way, we would be very open to doing it. I think there might be some issues which he might send our way,” Jaishankar said.

“I feel this is an issue where, obviously it’s mainly for the US to do, but we will be supportive and collaborative because it is an issue. We have today, and I and I heard this on a very regular basis in India,” he said.

There are families who are not able to meet, there are people who can’t keep their business appointments. There are students who are waiting for a long time. So, it’s a genuinely serious problem of some magnitude, Jaishankar said.

“But I’m very confident that with the sincerity that Secretary Blinken showed and the seriousness with which I hope they would address this and, with any support that we can provide, we hope that things will improve,” he said.

During the joint news conference with him a day earlier, Blinken explained the compulsions and the constraints of the US.

“I think he was very sincere about trying to rectify the situation,” Jaishankar said.

Jaishankar said he saw a great deal of enthusiasm on the American side.

The world economy was already under a lot of stress, because of the COVID-19 and the Ukraine conflict, and its repercussions have added to that, he said.

“Today, for a lot of countries, including us, much higher energy costs, are a source of obvious anxiety. We can see food inflation. Some countries even face availability challenges. That’s another big worry. There are justified concerns about fertilisers, access to fertilizers and trade in fertilizers. Remember, today’s fertiliser problems going to be tomorrow’s food problems. Many countries are struggling with unsustainable debt. There are trade disruptions,” he noted.

Taliban ink deal for discounted Russian oil, gas and wheat

This deal comes as Russia has been hit hard by sanctions imposed after its invasion of Ukraine…reports Asian Lite News

Taliban have inked an agreement to purchase and import Russian wheat, gas, and oil, the officials of the Islamic group said.

A Taliban spokesperson said products including gasoline, diesel, gas, and wheat would be purchased at a “special discount” in Russian currency, Khaama Press news agency reported.

Although Russia had agreed to the discounted trade deal, the Taliban official did not provide any details on the pricing and payment methods.

This deal comes as Russia has been hit hard by sanctions imposed after its invasion of Ukraine. The punitive measures from the Western countries have forced Moscow to shift its exports from Europe to Asia.

Meanwhile, economic development, trade and transit remained a high priority for the Taliban, since its accent to power in August last year.

The Islamic group has continued diplomatic and economic engagement with regional countries, whose representatives stated publicly that formal recognition of the de facto authorities as a government was not imminent.

This deal comes after high-level Taliban delegations visited Russia earlier this year. Aside from Moscow, several companies from regional countries have shown interest in investing in the extractive industries sector in Afghanistan.

The Taliban leadership have consistently said that they are looking for trade deals with the international community.

This latest agreement with Russia move could help to ease the isolation that has effectively cut it off from the world following their takeover of Afghanistan last year.

A UN report released on Tuesday said the Afghan economy remained greatly weakened by the severe economic contraction and the banking and financial crisis that followed the Taliban takeover.

“Available data suggest that six-month revenue collection through June, driven by customs and non-tax sources, is on par with the level recorded for the same period last year, and exports, driven by coal and fruits, surpassed past performance,” said the latest quarterly report of the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to the Security Council.

The sudden stop of aid inflows, however, accompanied by political uncertainty, inadequate access to services and women’s exclusion from economic participation, continued to lead to slow growth, the report added.

According to the UN report, Humanitarian needs were compounded by the sharp economic decline and the

devastating combination of decades of conflict, recent earthquakes, recurring natural hazards and protracted vulnerability. (ANI)

World Bank slashes China’s growth projection to 2.8%

It is pertinent to mention that 2022 will be the first year China’s growth will fall below that of the region since 1990…reports Asian Lite News

The World Bank on Tuesday slashed China’s 2022 economic growth projection to 2.8 per cent, pointing to Beijing’s “zero-COVID” policy and real estate crisis.

Notably, the World Bank forecasted 5 per cent economic growth in April, The Strait Times reported.

In the October update of its report on the economic prospects for East Asia and the Pacific (EAP), the World Bank project 2.8 per cent growth, which is the lowest among international institutions.

It is pertinent to mention that 2022 will be the first year China’s growth will fall below that of the region since 1990, according to The Strait times citing report.

Given that China accounts for 86 per cent of the GDP of the 23 countries in the EAP, its slowdown will drag overall growth down to 3.2 per cent in 2022 from 7.2 per cent in 2021. Excluding China, the World Bank forecasts that growth in the EAP will more than double in 2022 to 5.3 per cent from 2.6 per cent in 2021.

In the presentation of the report, the Bank’s chief economist for East Asia and the Pacific Aaditya Mattoo highlighted three main areas of concern for growth in the EAP.

According to Mattoo, the global economic slowdown, which is likely to depress demand for the region’s exports of manufactured goods and commodities; interest rate hikes by the US Federal Reserve and other central banks, have led to capital outflows, currency depreciation and higher debt-servicing burdens; and measures to control inflation, such as price controls and subsidies, notably in Malaysia and Indonesia; are the main concern.

Such measures distort price signals, provide support not just to poor people but also to the wealthy, and draw resources away from spending in other areas.

During the presentation, Mattoo pointed out that China’s growth is weighed down by its Zero-COVID policy and the real estate sector crisis, reported The Strait Times.

These short-term irritants need to be addressed to unleash the longer-term potential of the Chinese economy,” he said.

According to Dr Mattoo, the global economic slowdown will have a disproportionate impact on the region’s growth prospects.

Moreover, interest rate hikes by the US Federal Reserve and other central banks as well as depreciating currencies will impact both debt servicing burdens and inflation in the EAP.

The World Bank estimates that recent price and interest-rate shocks could reduce growth in the region by 0.4 percentage points.

Mattoo said that most countries in the region have coped fairly well with the rate hikes because much of their debt is domestic and the proportion of variable interest rate debt in their foreign obligations is low, according to The Strait Times.

However, given that currencies across the region have fallen against the US dollar, all countries are affected to some degree by inflation because of higher import costs – mainly food and fuel, which are priced in US dollars – as well as higher debt service burdens, which will translate into less spending on infrastructure, health and education. Chenab Bridge a symbol of development, prosperity

The bridge is the key link in providing direct connectivity to Kashmir valley. The design life of the bridge is at least 120 years…reports Asian Lite News

Infrastructure projects in the region are taking Kashmir to new heights of development. While India is celebrating 75 years of Independence, Kashmir valley is witnessing two milestones in infrastructure development.

Indian Railways is credited for constructing the world’s highest railway bridge – Chenab Bridge in Kashmir, successfully completing the Golden Joint. The Golden Joint is connecting two ends of the deck of the world’s highest railway bridge, thereby symbolically connecting Kashmir with the rest of India. Kashmir will also witness inauguration of its first electric train to run between the 137 km Banihal-Baramulla corridor rail link on Gandhi Jayanti (October 2) – another milestone in progress in Kashmir valley.

An Indian engineering feat, the 1,315 metre long bridge forms a crucial link in the 111-km stretch from Katra to Banihal, which is part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla section of the Kashmir railway project.

The highest railway bridge in the world, Chenab Bridge is 359 metres above the river bed, which is 35 metres higher than the Eiffel Tower. The bridge is the key link in providing direct connectivity to Kashmir valley. The design life of the bridge is at least 120 years.

Chenab Bridge has already taken enthusiasts by storm. Social media calls it ‘connectivity to the paradise on the earth’. During Monsoon, the bridge almost looks like something out of a fairytale drowned in a sea of clouds. The pictures of the bridge look so breathtaking, that Twitterati checked with the Railway Ministry for pre-booking of the train ride!

Chenab Bridge is an engineering marvel as its construction is going on in the face of several challenges. The project was conceived and is being implemented despite the awareness of challenges posed by the geology, harsh terrain and the hostile environment. The engineers and railway officials are at work with commitment and ingenuity despite gargantuan challenges so as to meet the time schedule.

According to the General Manager of Northern Railways, Indian Railways plans to connect Kashmir with rest of country through the railway link by the end of 2023.

This project is the highest altitude railway network in India – defying gravity on the impossible terrain of the Pir Panjal range. Indian Railways’ ‘Future Ready’ railway system will surely go down as the new chapter of J&K’s glory, development and prosperity.

Surender Mahi, Chief Administrative Officer of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL)project said: “It was a very big project for all of us. To reach here we had to construct 26 kms of approach roads having bridges and tunnels”.

Mahi said that defying obstacles and challenges, the engineers at last have constructed the highest bridge of the world and gifted this engineering marvel to the people of Kashmir. This feat, according to him, was achieved with tech support from several prestigious scientific and tech institutions in the country including IIT-Roorkee, IIT-Delhi, Indian Institute of Sciences – Bangalore, DRDO, National Remote Sensing Agency, GSI and other agencies.”

The responsibility of connecting the country through railway infrastructure in the dangerous terrain of J&K in addition to the Chenab Bridge has been assigned to Mumbai-based Afcons. The company is building 16 other railway bridges in Kashmir valley, all are part of an all-weather, cost-effective USBRL project, that will be a boon to the local economy.

Connectivity is the key to development. Kashmir was nearly segregated from the rest of the country due to poor connectivity, mainly inhibited by difficult terrain. It was impeding all-round development of the region. Though road transportation was available, it was a tedious journey for the travellers. Thanks to Indian Railways, the rail link will provide round the clock transportation to and from the valley. This cheap transportation will usher new developments in the region as it would facilitate transport across India all local products, especially apples, handicrafts and art products made up of warm clothes and wood.

Though Indian Railways had planned the rail link to Kashmir long ago, the administration has been pushing for the timely completion of all projects since abrogation of Article 370, despite the pandemic-related hurdles along the way.

Railway line is also ushering development of surrounding areas which so far did not have even basic road network. Indian Railways have built more than 205-km long approach roads, which include a tunnel and 320 bridges. 73 villages of the region which were earlier only accessible by foot or boats are now accessible through this railway connection.

The electrification of 137 km Banihal-Baramulla corridor rail link, costing Rs 324 crore, with three main substations – Qazigund, Budgam, and Baramulla – is another boon to the region. It will not only reduce pollution in the area but also save 60 per cent of total fuel consumption at present. The trials on the line were completed on September 20.

Infrastructure development in J&K got a big push after the abrogation of Article 370 and since then, the government has announced a lot of development projects and policies in the J&K region. The sincerity of the Central government in development of J&K could be gauged by the fact 34 per cent of the receipt for J&K Budget for FY 2022-23 estimated at Rs 68,206 crore would come from the Central government as grants. The Central government is continuously pumping monetary resources and taking policy initiatives to rejuvenate the local economy. National Highway Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL) is developing five tunnels in the region at a cost of USD 3.42 million. The tunnels will have all weather access and will be completed by 2024.

Earlier, the under developed strategic highways had added to the worries of the region’s agriculture and horticulture sectors as the movement of fruits took an inordinately long time to reach market destinations. But now that fear is giving way to hope as government is pursuing construction of major highways on priority basis. These connectivity projects are expected to bring development and prosperity in Kashmir along with business and employment opportunities to Kashmiri youths.

Obesity may cost $10 trillion to China

It has added enormous health and economic burden on individuals, families and the nation if not tackled effectively. It could seriously hinder the sustainable development of the population and society in China…reports Asian Lite News

China has the world’s largest number of people with overweight or obesity and they are expected to cost 10 trillion US dollars a year to the country.

China is among 161 countries whose economies will be affected because of overweight conditions and obesity. According to a paper peer-reviewed and published in BMJ Global Health, the economic cost of the two is expected to rise from 2.19 per cent to 3.3 per cent of GDP in 161 countries.

These findings are from a new study conducted jointly by the World Obesity Federation and RTI International. The study analysed the current economic impact of overweight and obesity and provided the first-ever country-specific global estimate of the economic impacts of non-communicable disease (NCD), mainly due to avoidable healthcare costs of cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular disease attributable to obesity.

Overweight conditions and obesity are common lifestyle problems in China. The Chinese government is very well aware of it but has failed to take effective health measures. Beijing officially participated in the World Obesity Day activity on March 4.

A “Report on Chinese Residents Chronic Diseases and Nutrition (2020)” has made shocking revelations. The report found that more than 50 per cent of adults and 20 per cent of school-age children were overweight or obese. Obesity is associated with increased risks of many chronic diseases and premature death.

It has added enormous health and economic burden on individuals, families and the nation if not tackled effectively. It could seriously hinder the sustainable development of the population and society in China.

For many years, the WHO, the National Health Commission of China (NHC) and other institutions at home and abroad have been fighting the obesity epidemic. World’s highest-impact general medical journal, Lancet has stated that the rapid economic growth in China has been accompanied by an alarming rise in obesity.

According to the Lancet journal, the National survey data has suggested that more than half of Chinese adults are now living with overweight and obesity, with obesity rates likely to increase. Under`Health policy and public health implications of obesity in China’ the journal has pointed out lifestyle to be the real reason behind the rise in diabetic cases over the last three decades.

In three paper series on obesity in China, Lancet stated that China has experienced many drastic social and economic changes and shifts in people’s lifestyles since the 1990s, in parallel with the fast-rising prevalence of obesity. About half of adults and a fifth of children have overweight or obesity according to the Chinese criteria, making China the country with the highest number of overweight or obese people in the world.

Under Epidemiology and determinants of obesity in China, the journal made certain observations in June 2021. Obesity has become a major public health issue in China. Overweight and obesity have increased rapidly in the past four decades, and the latest national prevalence estimates for 2015-19, based on Chinese criteria, were 6*8 pc for overweight and 3*6 pc for obesity in children younger than 6 years, 11*1 pc for overweight and 7*9 pc for obesity in children and adolescents aged 6-17 years, and 34*3 pc for overweight and 16*4 pc for obesity in adults (>=18 years).

Prevalence differed by sex, age group, and geographical location, but was substantial in all subpopulations. Strong evidence from prospective cohort studies has linked overweight and obesity to increased risks of major non-communicable diseases and premature mortality in Chinese populations.

The growing burden of overweight and obesity could be driven by economic developments, sociocultural norms, and policies shaping individual-level risk factors for obesity through urbanisation, urban planning and built environments, and food systems and environments.

Substantial changes in dietary patterns have occurred in China, with increased consumption of animal-source foods, refined grains, and highly processed, high-sugar, and high-fat foods, while physical activity levels in all major domains have decreased with increasing sedentary behaviours.

The effects of dietary factors and physical inactivity intersect with other individual-level risk factors such as genetic susceptibility, psychosocial factors, obesogens, and in-utero and early-life exposures.

Under the ‘Health policy and public health implications of obesity in China’, chapter, the journal made serious observations in June 2021. Assuming that observed time trends would continue in the future, Lancet projected the prevalence of and the number of people affected by overweight and obesity by 2030, and the associated medical costs.

The rising incidence of obesity and the number of people affected, as well as the related health and economic consequences, place a huge burden on China’s healthcare system. China has made many efforts to tackle obesity, including the implementation of relevant national policies and programmes.

However, these measures are inadequate for controlling the obesity epidemic. The journal quoted that China has attached great importance to public health in the last decade or so and the Healthy China 2030 national strategy initiated in 2016 provides a historic opportunity to establish comprehensive national strategies for tackling obesity.

China is well positioned to explore an effective model to overcome the obesity epidemic; however, strong commitment and leadership from central and local governments are needed, as well as an active participation of all related society sectors and individual citizens.

Another reputed International Journal of Obesity said China was in the midst of a severely alarming increase in obesity, particularly abdominal obesity. When these increases are combined with the sheer size of China’s population, they are likely witnessing an unparalleled development, at least in scope.

The findings of these journals are therefore a stark warning to the Chinese establishment that instead of creating trouble for other countries, it should look inwards and tackle the problems of overweight and obesity. (ANI)

Imran’s another futile bid to subdue PoJK

The ruling ideas of the Pakistan military establishment still play a big role in the moulding of the general consciousness of the people of PoJK/GB…writes Amjad Ayub Mirza

On September 29, Imran Khan arrives in Muzaffarabad to address a public rally in the capital of Pakistan occupied Jammu Kashmir (PoJK).

He will once again use Islamic religious rhetoric to subdue a rebellious, oppressed population which has over the past months demonstrated its resilience beyond a doubt.

In order for the Pakistan military establishment to maintain its conquest of the land and people of PoJK and Pakistan occupied Gilgit-Baltistan (PoGB), it is fundamental that complete synchronisation of cultural (read Islamic) ideology of the oppressor be established on its subjects.

Only religious indoctrination of the whole population could have paved the way for 75 years of oppression in PoJK and PoGB. If consciousness of the masses were not in general agreement with the narrative of the military establishment, the subjugation would not have lasted for such a long period of time.

The ruling ideas of the Pakistan military establishment still play a big role in the moulding of the general consciousness of the people of PoJK/GB.

Human consciousness is a social product and individual consciousness is determined by the persons’ position in society. Today the people of PoJK/GB realise that their social position is, in actuality, that of second class citizens who have no political or economic rights.

The homogeneous social consciousness between the oppressor and the oppressed is glued between them through a religious (Islamic) narrative and has been used to make our people accept the plunder of our natural resources and denial of our basic human rights.

With the growth of social media and internet, the homogeneous social consciousness is now being challenged. WhatsApp and Facebook have provided access to information in a way that 20 years ago could not have been imagined.

From Muzaffarabad to Neelum and Mirpur and from Gilgit to Skardu, the people of PoJK/GB are challenging the nature of the social relation between Pakistan and PoJK/GB as never before.

However, the dominant world outlook in the occupied territories is still derived from the religion of Islam. Nevertheless, slogans such as ‘Allah hu Akbar’ and ‘Pakistan ka matlab kiya: Lailaha illal la’ are gradually being replaced by slogans such as ‘Ye jo dehshat gardi hay is kay peechay wardi hai’ and ‘Hum keya mangey: Azadi’, but the predominant cultural connection of Islam with the Pakistan establishment’s narrative has not yet ended.

Political justification for the ongoing occupation is submitted to the interests of Islam. Land grab in both PoJK and PoGB is executed by the Pakistan military in the name of defence (read Islam) against a ‘Hindu’ India.

But things are changing. The forceful imposition of fuel charges (taxes) on electricity bills, cuts in subsidies of essential goods, political manipulation guided by the Pakistan military establishment in both PoJK and PoGB to form pro-Pakistan governments and the brutal suppression of peaceful protesters in recent months have contributed to a change in the world outlook of the oppressed.

Imran Khan.(PHOTO:INSTAGRAM)

The blatant acts of colonial plunder of our natural resources such as precious stones, forest wood and diversion of rivers to build hydropower plants for electricity supply to the Punjab, have left a deep impact on the consciousness of the people of PoJK/GB.

From this the world outlook of the oppressed has for the first time shown signs of a break from the world outlook of the oppressor.

However, only by way of perpetual accumulation of the understanding of the nature of colonial oppression over a certain period of time can lead the consciousness of the people of PoJK/GB to a stage when the complete break away from the cultural (Islamic) world outlook takes place. And believe me, that stage is approaching fast.

With reports coming out of Jammu and Kashmir regarding economic and infrastructure development, suppression of terrorism, foreign investment, panchayat and DDC elections and an unmatchable surge in tourism, the oppressed people of PoJK/GB can feel the difference between living as an oppressed nation and a people living as part of a voluntary union of the republic of India.

For the first time the link, the connection, and the bondage of Islam that was used as cultural tool to hold together the oppressed people of PoJK/GB and Pakistan has been shattered beyond repair. Imran Khan’s visit to the capital of PoJK is going to be another futile exercise to mend it.

(Dr Amjad Ayub Mirza is an author and a human rights activist from Mirpur in PoJK. He currently lives in exile in the UK. The views expressed are personal)

‘India, Singapore closely collaborating in cutting edge areas’

Singapore Minister in PMO Loh Khum Yean, currently on a 2-day visit to India, called on his Indian counterpart Jitendra Singh at North Block in Delhi…reports Asian Lite News

India and Singapore are closely collaborating in cutting edge areas that will shape the future in the context of accelerating technological disruption — fintech, information technology, cyber security, skill development, smart city solutions and renewable energy and food security, said MoS PMO, Personnel Jitendra Singh on Thursday.

Singapore Minister in PMO Loh Khum Yean, currently on a 2-day visit to India, called on his Indian counterpart Jitendra Singh at North Block in Delhi.

Singh said the maiden India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable held in Delhi on September 17 was envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which he described as a path breaking initiative that is a testament to the unique India-Singapore bilateral ties and can pave the way for coordination in new areas of partnership.

The Minister pointed out that India and Singapore show convergence on a variety of issues of international importance and they are part of numerous groupings like G20, Commonwealth, IORA (Indian Ocean Rim Association), East Asia Summit, and IONS (Indian Ocean Naval Symposium).

He said, following the conclusion of the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) of 2005, this robust relationship was elevated to a Strategic Partnership in 2015 during the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.

Loh Khum Yean told Jitendra Singh that Singapore has emerged as the top source nation in terms of foreign direct investment (FDI) equity flows into India for the financial year 2021-22. The amount of FDI inflow from Singapore to India in fiscal year 2022 was estimated to be almost $16 billion.

K’taka kick-starts Europe roadshows for Global Investors’ Meet

GIM 2022 is a flagship investor event for Karnataka. The purpose of the event is to showcase the robust industrial-friendly ecosystem of Karnataka, attract investments from global players…reports Asian Lite News

Karnataka’s Minister of Large and Medium Industries, Murugesh R Nirani, kicked off the Europe roadshows for Global Investors’ Meet (GIM) 2022 in London on Thursday.

Leading the delegation, the minister said, “The State of Karnataka offers an excellent industrial ecosystem, world-class infrastructure and industrial-friendly policies. UK govt working with India for FTAs, says Cleverly

The U.K. will be the first European country to join the CPTPP should it succeed in becoming a member…reports Asian Lite News

UK is “working intensely” with India to achieve the Free Trade Agreements soon, UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said.

This comes after Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal had said the UK is keen to stick to the Diwali deadline for free trade agreements. “We have signed Free Trade Agreements with Australia and New Zealand – and we are working intensely to agree one with India soon”, the foreign secretary Cleverly said.

In a keynote speech at the 9th Annual Milken Asia Summit, while setting out the UK’s continued commitment in the Indo-Pacific region, the UK foreign secretary noted, “We were the first European country to secure a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with India. And we intend to be the first European country to accede to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership. It will give the region access to the UK’s world-class financial services sector as well as, as well as the world’s sixth largest economy. That’s why engagement between the UK and Indo-Pacific needs to cover the broadest spectrum of activity.”

Earlier, Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal had said the UK is keen to stick to the Diwali deadline for India-UK free trade agreement and both countries are working towards it.

He referred to the passing away of Queen Elizabeth II and said “as we are expanding our engagements, the UK is at a cusp”. “I received a letter from the UK again reiterating that they want to stick to the Diwali deadline (for the India-UK Free Trade Agreement),” Goyal had said at an event in New Delhi.

Speaking of India’s engagements and the quest to become self-reliant, Goyal said, “If we don’t engage with the international market, we are the losers…Today the whole world is talking of Atmanirbhar…There is no power that can stop us from becoming a developed nation in the next 25 years…The world wants to engage with us, the world has more confidence in us than we have.”

British High Commissioner to India, Alex Ellis had also said that India and the United Kingdom have the high ambition of completing the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by Diwali this year. He had said that the agreement will increase employment and bring economic development to India over the next 25 years.

“Both, India and UK need to grow because we have great ambitions from both prime ministers. FTA is one of the best ways we can support the growth and development of India’s economy and India’s employment over the next 25 years. Now is the time to write a new chapter in our history as partners and support each other in our growth,” the UK High Commissioner told ANI on the sidelines of an event held in New Delhi.

On being asked, if it could be a “Diwali Dhamaka”, the UK High Commissioner nodded, saying, “I hope so.”

“I think we have high ambition on completing the FTA by Diwali. The FTA will create more jobs, more growth, and more opportunities for India to grow and develop,” he added.

The two countries concluded the fifth round of talks for the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) last month.

‘Strategic shift to Indo-Pacific is permanent’

Britain will commit itself more fully to the Indo-Pacific region, beyond its ongoing efforts to join a massive trade deal in the region, the country’s new foreign secretary said Thursday.

“The Indo-Pacific tilt is here to stay,” James Cleverly said at the Milken Institute Asia Summit. “It is permanent.”

That “tilt” toward the Indo-Pacific will include further cooperation on economic issues, security matters and “shared values,” Cleverly said.

The foreign secretary pointed to “our commitment to sovereignty and territorial integrity and freedom from economic coercion, and a shared belief in the value of democracy and open markets.”

Cleverly said that 1.7 million British citizens live in the region, and the United Kingdom has trade relationships worth $250 billion in the Indo-Pacific.

The Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, or CPTPP, is a trade pact that currently includes seven countries in Asia-Pacific and four in the Americas. It evolved out of the now-defunct Trans-Pacific Partnership, or TPP, a trade bloc that was originated by the United States but which fell apart after former President Donald Trump scrapped U.S. involvement.

The United Kingdom is in the process of joining the CPTPP, a move that it hopes would help it diversify its trade partnerships, particularly since the country departed from the European Union.

The U.K. will be the first European country to join the CPTPP should it succeed in becoming a member.

China is also applying to join the CPTPP but has not made as much progress as the United Kingdom has. Cleverly said any discussion of the Indo-Pacific region had to include China, acknowledging that the country is a “driver of growth” that has successfully lifted millions of its citizens from poverty.

“But the lesson I take from watching China over my lifetime is that when China departs from global rules and norms, when it aligns itself with countries like Russia, its standing in the world suffers,” Cleverly said.

China President Xi Jinping and Russia’s Vladimir Putin sealed a “no limits” partnership in February, only days before Russian troops stormed into Ukraine, starting a war that has taken tens of thousands of lives and continues to rage almost eight months later.

Cleverly has held his current role for only three weeks, but he said those three weeks had been “pretty intense.” Among other events, Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II died in that period, and the United Nations General Assembly took place in New York City.
