Kshatriya to head NASA’s new Moon to Mars office

In the new role, Kshatriya is responsible for programme planning and implementation for human missions to the Moon and Mars.A…reports Asian Lite News

Indian-origin software and robotics engineer, Amit Kshatriya has been appointed as first head of NASA’s new Moon to Mars Programme Office at the agency’s headquarters in Washington.

The new office aims to carry out NASA’s human exploration activities at the Moon and Mars for the benefit of humanity.

“The Moon to Mars Programme Office will help prepare NASA to carry out our bold missions to the Moon and land the first humans on Mars,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson, in a statement.

“The golden age of exploration is happening right now, and this new office will help ensure that NASA successfully establishes a long-term lunar presence needed to prepare for humanity’s next giant leap to the Red Planet.”

As directed by the 2022 NASA Authorization Act, the Moon to Mars Programme Office focuses on hardware development, mission integration, and risk management functions for programmes critical to the agency’s exploration approach that uses Artemis missions at the Moon to open a new era of scientific discovery and prepare for human missions to Mars.

This includes the Space Launch System rocket, Orion spacecraft, supporting ground systems, human landing systems, spacesuits, Gateway, and more related to deep space exploration.

The new office will also lead planning and analysis for long-lead developments to support human Mars missions.

The office resides within the Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate (ESDMD), and Kshatriya, appointed as deputy associate administrator, will report to its Associate Administrator Jim Free.

Kshatriya previously served as acting deputy associate administrator for Common Exploration Systems Development, providing leadership and integration across several of the programmes that now fall within the new office.

In the new role, Kshatriya is responsible for programme planning and implementation for human missions to the Moon and Mars.A

He will direct and lead the programmes to ensure Artemis and Mars planning, development, and operations are consistent with ESDMD requirements, and will serve as the single point of focus for risk management.

Kshatriya began his career in the space programme in 2003, working as a software engineer, robotics engineer, and spacecraft operator primarily focused on the robotic assembly of the International Space Station.

From 2014 to 2017, he served as a space station flight director, where he led global teams in the operations and execution of the space station during all phases of flight.

From 2017 to 2021, he became deputy, and then acting manager, of the ISS Vehicle Office, where he was responsible for sustaining engineering, logistics, and hardware programme management.

In 2021, he was assigned to NASA Headquarters in the Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate as an assistant deputy associate administrator, where he was an integral part of the team that returned a spacecraft designed to carry humans to the Moon during the Artemis I mission.

Son of first-generation Indian immigrants to the US, Kshatriya holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California, and a Master of Arts in Mathematics from The University of Texas at Austin.

He has also been decorated with the NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal for actions as the lead flight director for the 50th expedition to the space station, as well as the Silver Snoopy — an award that astronauts bestow for outstanding performance contributing to flight safety — for his actions as lead robotics officer for the Commercial Orbital Transportation Services Dragon demonstration mission to the orbiting laboratory.

Trump expected to surrender next week

Trump, who has denied any wrongdoing and has repeatedly assailed the probe, called the indictment “political persecution” …reports Asian Lite News

Donald Trump has been indicted by a Manhattan grand jury, a historic reckoning after years of investigations into his personal, political and business dealings and an abrupt jolt to his bid to retake the White House.

The exact nature of the charges was unclear Friday because the indictment remained under seal, but they stem from payments made during the 2016 presidential campaign to silence claims of an extramarital sexual encounter. Prosecutors said they were working to coordinate Trump’s surrender, which could happen early next week. They did not say whether they intended to seek prison time in the event of a conviction, a development that wouldn’t prevent Trump from seeking and assuming the presidency.

The indictment, the first against a former U.S. president, injects a local district attorney’s office into the heart of a national presidential race and ushers in criminal proceedings in a city that the ex-president for decades called home. Arriving at a time of deep political divisions, the charges are likely to reinforce rather than reshape dueling perspectives of those who see accountability as long overdue and those who, like Trump, feel the Republican is being targeted for political purposes by a Democratic prosecutor.

Trump, who has denied any wrongdoing and has repeatedly assailed the investigation, called the indictment “political persecution” and predicted it would damage Democrats in 2024. In a statement confirming the charges, defense lawyers Susan Necheles and Joseph Tacopina said Trump “did not commit any crime. We will vigorously fight this political prosecution in court.”

A spokesman for the Manhattan district attorney’s office confirmed the indictment and said prosecutors had reached out to Trump’s defense team to coordinate a surrender. Tacopina said Trump is “likely” to turn himself in on Tuesday.

Trump was asked to surrender Friday but his lawyers said the Secret Service needed additional time as they made security preparations, two people familiar with the matter told The Associated Press. The people spoke on condition of anonymity because they couldn’t publicly discuss security details.

District Attorney Alvin Bragg left his office Thursday evening without commenting.

The case centers on well-chronicled allegations from a period in 2016 when Trump’s celebrity past collided with his political ambitions. Prosecutors for months scrutinized money paid to porn actor Stormy Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal, whom he feared would go public with claims that they had extramarital sexual encounters with him.

The timing of the indictment appeared to come as a surprise to Trump campaign officials following news reports that criminal charges were likely weeks away. The former president was at Mar-a-Lago, his Florida estate, on Thursday and filmed an interview with a conservative commentator earlier in the day.

For a man whose presidency was defined by one obliterated norm after another, the indictment sets up yet another never-before-seen spectacle — a former president having his fingerprints and mug shot taken, and then facing arraignment. For security reasons, his booking is expected to be carefully choreographed to avoid crowds inside or outside the courthouse.

The prosecution also means that Trump will have to simultaneously fight for his freedom and political future, while also fending off potentially more perilous legal threats, including investigations into attempts by him and his allies to undo the 2020 presidential election as well as into the hoarding of hundreds of classified documents.

In fact, New York was until recently seen as an unlikely contender to be the first place to prosecute Trump, who continues to face long-running investigations in Atlanta and Washington that could also result in charges. Unlike those inquiries, the Manhattan case concerns allegations against Trump that occurred before he became president and are unrelated to his much-publicized efforts to overturn the election.

The indictment comes as Trump seeks to reassert control of the Republican Party and stave off a slew of one-time allies who may threaten his bid for the presidential nomination. An expected leading rival in the race, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, called the indictment “un-American” in a statement Thursday night that pointedly did not mention Trump’s name.

In bringing the charges, Bragg, the Manhattan district attorney, is embracing an unusual case that was investigated by two previous sets of prosecutors, both of which declined to take the politically explosive step of seeking Trump’s indictment. The case may also turn in part on the testimony of a key witness, Trump’s former lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen, who pleaded guilty to federal charges arising from the hush money payments, including making false statements.

The probe’s fate seemed uncertain until word got out in early March that Bragg had invited Trump to testify before a grand jury, a signal that prosecutors were close to bringing charges.

Trump’s attorneys declined the invitation, but a lawyer closely allied with the former president briefly testified in an effort to undercut Cohen’s credibility.

Sustainable fishing practices boost Abu Dhabi’s environmental efforts

An increase in the index indicates that the administrative measures implemented in the fisheries are providing a positive impact, which will help lead to the recovery of fish stocks by 2030…reports Asian Lite News

For the fourth year in a row, the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has recorded a significant improvement in the “Sustainable Exploitation Index” following the implementation of fishing-related measures and procedures.

The index increased from 8.9 percent in 2018 to 69.1 percent at the end of 2022 and was calculated by evaluating a total of 35 fish species, which accounted for 97 percent of landings in 2022.

Since 2001, the EAD has been monitoring the state of fish stocks according to two basic indicators of sustainability. The first, the “Spawning Biomass per Recruit” (SBR) index, is the percentage of the fish that are old enough to spawn, allowing for the renewal of the stock. The second indicator is the “Sustainable Exploitation Index”, used to describe the proportion of species that are sustainably exploited.

An increase in the index indicates that the administrative measures implemented in the fisheries are providing a positive impact, which will help lead to the recovery of fish stocks by 2030. The Agency’s data revealed that it had achieved the target percentage of the Spawning Biomass per Recruit, which determines the proportion of the stock volume of 30 main commercial species compared to the volume of their untapped stock. In 2022, an increase of 40 percent in the average stock size was recorded, up from 25.6 percent in 2020.

The landing quantities of some major fish species have improved, as has an expansion of their spread thanks to strengthened protection operations and the activation of regulatory procedures carried out by the Agency. This has relieved pressure on fisheries and contributed to their recovery, proving that the results obtained in fisheries performance indicators underscore the importance of the EAD’s continuing implementation of a ban on Gargoor fishing and encircling nets methods in Abu Dhabi waters.

The Agency stressed the importance of its existing cooperation with the Critical Infrastructure and Coastal Protection Authority in preserving the marine environment, regulating the exploitation of fish wealth, and supporting eco-tourism and cultural and recreational activities in Abu Dhabi.

The Agency also praised the commitment of fishermen and the cooperation of fishermen’s associations and their effective role in implementing the decisions and procedures related to fishing by the Agency to protect fish stocks. This has contributed significantly to reducing the effects of overfishing on the marine environment and achieving an improvement in the state of fish stocks in the emirate’s waters for the fourth consecutive year.

The Agency recorded an increase of 91 percent in the landing rate of “Zuraidi” (Golden Trevally) fish since 2020, up to approximately 15,000kg in 2022, while the percentage increase in the landing of Jedd (Pickhandle Barracuda) fish reached 90 percent, reaching about 112,000kg last year. The rate of landing of Faskar (Two Bar Seabream) fish has increased by 96 percent since 2020, to about 800kg in 2022. About “Umm Dhrais” (Indian Snapper) fish, the Agency recorded a 25-fold increase in the landing of this species, which increased from a total of 51kg in 2020 to approximately 1,300kg in 2022.

In 2022, the average mature stock size of “Hamourr” (Orange Spotted Grouper) and “Naiser” (Ehrenbergs Snapper) fish increased by 18 percent and five percent, respectively, compared to 2021, while the relative average adult stock size of “Kanaad”, (Kingfish) “Shaari” (Spangled Emperor), “Durduman” (Yellow Tail Scad), “Jesh” (Orange Spotted Trevally) and “Dhile” (Talang Queenfish) increased by 25 percent, 20 percent, 19 percent, six percent, and four percent, respectively, compared to 2020. The average relative size of mature fish stocks increased by 20 percent compared to 2019, and the “Shaam” (Yellowfin Seabream) fish achieved an eight percent growth in the average size of mature fish compared to 2018.

The Programme responds to the growing interest from the private sector in Dubai to leverage capital markets, given the opportunities generating from Dubai’s rapidly growing economy as well as companies’ eagerness to tap into capital markets to implement their growth strategies.

In 2022, DFM became one of the most active markets globally for IPOs and listings attracting five leading government-related and private companies that successfully raised AED 31 billion.

“We are proud to launch The IPO Accelerator Programme with Dubai Chamber, which is aligned with our efforts to create a conducive environment for companies to go public and raise capital through Dubai’s capital market. This Programme will provide businesses with the necessary education, support, and guidance to explore their IPO opportunity and contribute to the growth of Dubai’s economy,” said Hamed Ali, CEO of DFM and Nasdaq Dubai.

For his part, Mohammad Ali Rashed Lootah, President and CEO of Dubai Chambers, said, “We are delighted to partner with DFM to create an environment where various companies that consider public listing or going public through IPOs can find the capital they need to grow while building visibility and credibility with investors.”

“Following an MoU we signed with DFM last year, the IPO Accelerator Programme is one of the many collaborative initiatives we have planned to support the business community. More importantly, this programme aligns with Dubai’s economic ambitions to double the size of the economy by 2033 and consolidate its position among the top three global cities.”

‘The IPO Accelerator Programme’ is aimed at family businesses, large private companies, and businesses from sectors that can benefit from Dubai’s capital markets, creating opportunities for growth.

As part of the Programme, DFM and Dubai Chamber along with advisory firms will conduct workshops to prepare businesses and offer one-on-one meetings with key prospects to create a customised route towards an IPO as well as to identify and resolve any challenges, with a focus to making Dubai an even more desirable destination for businesses to grow from.

The first workshop is due to take place in May 2023 with the participation of 40 private companies from various sectors.

Once these businesses consider going public, ‘The IPO Accelerator Programme’ will liaise with key advisors to make the necessary introductions, work with financial advisors for an IPO readiness check, and prepare a listing plan.

DFM and Dubai Chamber will provide ongoing support to the company as they progress through the IPO process.

‘Pakistan won’t play World Cup in India’

The Men in Green wants to play their WC matches in Bangladesh or Sri Lanka,….writes Vipul Kashyap

Pakistan threatened to not take part in ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 scheduled to be held in India later this year if the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) would not allow Men in Blue to participate in Asia Cup 2023, as per a source.

The Men in Green wants to play their WC matches in Bangladesh or Sri Lanka, according to a source.

The World Cup 2023 is slated to take place in October-November this year. The International Cricket Council (ICC) is yet to announce the detailed schedule.

A PCB source told ANI, “Yes we are thinking that we will not travel to India for World Cup matches if BCCI didn’t send their team to Pakistan for Asia Cup. We want Sri Lanka or Bangladesh to host our matches, we want to play there not in India.”

According to a source, Pakistan will not come to India for World Cup and they want their matches to be hosted by Bangladesh or Sri Lanka. A few days back news came through a source that India will play their Asia Cup matches at a neutral venue and will not go to Pakistan. If India reached the final with Pakistan then it will also take part at a neutral venue.

It was also reported earlier that the Pakistan team could play its ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 matches in Bangladesh instead of India, which is the original host of the tournament, ESPNCricinfo reported.

Discussions have taken place that could see Pakistan shifting their games to a neutral venue and Bangladesh has been proposed as the venue due to its close proximity to India.

A hybrid model for this year’s Asia Cup is being looked at as a solution. Pakistan is the original host of the Asia Cup this year, but India is likely to play their matches at a neutral venue.

The idea came on the sidelines of board meetings in Dubai. India’s presence in Asia Cup and Pakistan’s participation in the 50-over World Cup coming later was on the agenda of members from the two Boards.

Though it has only been mentioned as an option and no formal discussions have taken place on the subject, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has pointed out that India not participating in Asia Cup has a potential impact on ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which will also be held in Pakistan.

The six-nation Asia Cup, which will be played in a 50-over format in the first part of September this year, has grouped India and Pakistan together with a qualifier. Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan are part of the other group.

Last October, the PCB was caught off guard by Jay Shah, who stated that the 2023 Asia Cup would be held in a “neutral” venue. The PCB, under the then chairman Ramiz Raja, promptly responded that Pakistan will withdraw from the competition if it was taken outside of the nation.

Last year, Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chairperson Jay Shah had stated that India will not travel to Pakistan for Asia Cup due to security reasons and the tournament will be played at some neutral venue, which is to be decided in the second round of the Executive Board meeting of ACC members.
