Mahesh Shetty Opens Up on the Bond with Hrithik

Actor Mahesh Shetty, who stars in the action movie ‘Fighter’ opened up on working with Hrithik Roshan, and shared about their off-screen bond, and heaped praised for the latter’s dedication and hard work. Mahesh plays the role of Squadron Leader Rajan Unninathan, a wingman to Patty (portrayed by Hrithik Roshan). Patty and Unni have a great on-screen dynamic. Whether it’s breaking all boundaries to save the country or standing by your partner’s side in a difficult situation, we saw them go through an emotional journey to protect their country and share a sense of patriotism. Talking about his experience working with Hrithik, Mahesh said: “In the Air Force lexicon, a Wingman is a pilot who flies alongside the leader of a flying formation providing mutual support, so their bonding is always on another level. This was the brief where we started from and hence Hritik and I started bonding well before the shoot began.” “The way he greeted me as ‘yaara’ on sets was so enduring and the whole team was like one big family. He is extremely genuine, and no doubt looks like a Greek God but even as a person, he is amazingly sweet and has a funny bone. The way he narrated stories to us always left us in splits and looking forward to more,” he shared. Mahesh added: “Not once did any of us feel that we were working with a huge star since there were no airs or tantrums thrown around. He is the Hritik Roshan for a reason and the reason is only dedication and hard work.” ‘Fighter’ is directed by Siddharth Anand, and stars Deepika Padukone and Anil Kapoor in pivotal roles. On the professional front, Mahesh will be next seen in the series ‘Kan Khajura’ which is an adaptation of the Israeli show ‘Magpie’.

UAE increasing use of robots in public life

The Ministry of Finance has completed the second phase of its internal transformation journey towards RPA….reports Asian Lite News

Robots are increasingly being integrated into public life in the UAE, with government entities and companies encouraged to use robotics and artificial intelligence to improve service efficiency and business development across all sectors.

The presence of robots in public places, government and private entities and institutions has become commonplace, as they are seen as official employees capable of meeting requirements and completing transactions with ease, speed, and extreme accuracy.

Yesterday, the Ministry of Finance announced the provision of 39,000 human work hours through adopting Robotic Process Automation (RPA) to process over 1.8 million transactions with an accuracy exceeding 98 percent. This has led to significant improvements in productivity and efficiency, taking a further step towards transitioning to a knowledge-based and innovative economy. It aligns with the goal of making the UAE the world’s best country by its centenary in 2071.

The Ministry of Finance has completed the second phase of its internal transformation journey towards RPA.

The ministry now utilises robots (software applications performing automated tasks), with chatbots being one of the most common types. These manage phone or online interactions between institutions and their clients. The Ministry of Finance uses them on its digital procurement platform, speeding up processes from 60 days to 6 minutes. This fosters greater competition for government contracts by allowing more small companies to participate.

Today, the use of such robots is increasingly spreading in the public sector as government entities seek to improve efficiency and customer services. The Emirates Health Services Foundation announced equipping its health facilities with a “blood drawing robot,” making it the first regional institution to use this robot. Studies indicate its ability to save 80 percent of the time required by the staff and 50 percent of patients’ waiting time for blood drawing services.

This announcement was made during the “Arab Health 2024” exhibition and conference, currently ongoing in Dubai, where the foundation participates as a strategic partner in healthcare services with four main axes.

The “blood-drawing robot” is not just a mechanical marvel; it’s a testament to the UAE’s focus on cutting-edge technology. Equipped with artificial intelligence and infrared technology, it promises efficient and accurate service, setting a new standard for healthcare automation.

Recognising the global demand for robotics expertise, the Mohamed bin Zayed University for Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) has taken a forward-thinking step. Launching two new departments dedicated to robotics and computer science, the university seeks to cultivate the next generation of AI and robotics leaders. Their focus on human-centric and autonomous robots aligns perfectly with the country’s vision for a technology-driven future.

Dubai’s status as a magnet for tech giants was further cemented in March 2023 with the opening of UiPath’s regional headquarters. This leading robotic process automation company chose the UAE for its dynamic scene, solidifying the country’s position as a global innovation hub.

The UAE’s embrace of robots extends far beyond healthcare and academia. They act as educational consultants, lecturers, broadcasters, surgeons, pharmacists, customer service representatives, even maritime rescuers! This diversity showcases the boundless potential of robotics, transforming sectors across the board.

Dr Ali Al Belooshi, Consultant Orthopedic and Joint Replacement Surgeon and Vice President of the Orthopedic Division at the Emirates Medical Association, exemplifies the success stories enabled by robotic technology. Since embracing AI and robotic tools, he has set a world record, performing over 1500 artificial joint surgeries with a remarkable 99 percent success rate. This incredible achievement highlights the life-changing potential of robot-assisted surgery. (ANI/WAM)

Tensions high as Hamas studies ceasefire proposal

Gaza health authorities said 26,900 Palestinians had been killed, including 150 over the past 24 hours…reports Asian Lite News

Israeli forces carried out new air strikes in Gaza on Wednesday as Hamas studied a new proposal for a ceasefire and the release of hostages held in the Palestinian enclave.

Witnesses said Israel had stepped up air strikes on Gaza City in the north, and bombarded parts of Khan Younis in the south, despite what appeared to be the most serious peace initiative for months in the Israel-Hamas war.

World powers hope to prevent a wider conflict, but tensions in the Middle East remained high after Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis said they would keep attacking US and British warships in the Red Sea in solidarity with Palestinians.

Relations between Tehran and Washington are also tense after the deaths of three US soldiers in a drone strike in Jordan that US officials blame on Iran-backed militants. Washington has not yet outlined its response, but Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said on Wednesday they would respond to any US threat.

Gaza health authorities said 26,900 Palestinians had been killed — including 150 over the past 24 hours — in the war that was triggered after Hamas fighters stormed from Gaza into Israeli towns on Oct. 7 killing 1,200 and taking 253 hostages.

Israel’s military said its forces had killed at least 25 Palestinian militants in Gaza in the past 24 hours, and that three Israeli soldiers had been killed — taking to 224 the number of troops killed during Israel’s ground offensive.

Smoke rose above Gaza City after the latest air strikes, some of which targeted the headquarters of the Hamas-run interior ministry, Hamas-run media and residents said.

The Al-Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza also came under fire and tanks pounded areas of Khan Younis around Nasser Hospital, the largest still functioning in the south, witnesses said.

DETERIORATING HEALTH SYSTEM

As the health system deteriorates, Palestinian medics say they have formed field medical points to help reach front lines, as treating the wounded in Khan Younis has become increasingly difficult amid street battles and artillery strikes.

“There’s a lot of injuries among the displaced who were in the industrial quarter and some schools,” said Nassim Hassan, the head of the Emergency Unit at Nasser Hospital, adding that “many of the injured left loaded on carts, tuk-tuks, cars or even on foot.”

Much of the densely populated Gaza Strip has been devastated by almost four months of Israeli bombardment, and most of its 2.3 million residents have been uprooted by fighting that international aid agencies say has caused a humanitarian crisis.

Thomas White, the agency’s Director of Gaza Affairs, said in a video that UNRWA had been forced to move its operations out of Khan Younis to the west of the city.

“We’ve lost a health clinic, major shelters — facilities that were supporting the people of Khan Younis,” said White.

The Red Crescent said on Tuesday Israeli forces had stormed Al-Amal hospital in Khan Younis and asked displaced people and staff to evacuate at gunpoint. An Israeli military spokesperson denied this.

The Red Crescent said on Wednesday a 75-year-old woman and a 45-day-old girl had died at Al-Amal after suffering a lack of oxygen for several days, and been buried in the hospital compound. Israel did not immediately comment on the report.

Health officials in Gaza say the situation has been complicated by Israeli allegations that some staff from the UN refugee agency for Palestinians (UNRWA) were involved in the Oct. 7 attack on Israel, prompting some countries including the United States to pause funding to the agency.

THREE-STAGE TRUCE

A senior Hamas official told Reuters the Gaza ceasefire proposal involved a three-stage truce, during which Hamas would release the remaining civilians among hostages captured on Oct. 7, then soldiers, and finally the bodies of dead hostages.

The proposal followed talks in Paris involving intelligence chiefs from Israel, the US and Egypt, with the prime minister of Qatar.

Palestinians welcomed the possibility of a ceasefire but said fighting must end permanently.

“Any ceasefire that doesn’t end the war and return us to our homes in Gaza City and the north is not worth it,” Ahmed, who fled his home in Gaza City for Rafah in the south, said by telephone. “We are exhausted.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu repeated his vow not to pull troops out of Gaza until “total victory.”

Israel says it will not stop fighting until Hamas is eradicated. Hamas says it will release its remaining captives only as part of a wider deal to end the war permanently.

The conflict has triggered concern of an escalation in an already tense region.

The US and Britain have carried out strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen over the group’s attacks on Red Sea shipping, but the Houthis’ military spokesperson said on Wednesday the group would continue what it called acts of self defense.

With tensions also high over Saturday’s drone attack on US service members in Jordan, the US says it has decided how to respond but has not said how.

Iran-aligned Iraqi armed group Kataib Hezbollah has said it is suspending all its military operations against US troops in the region, but Iran remained resolute.

Iranian Revolutionary Guards chief Hossein Salami said no US threat would be left unanswered, and Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian said: “The US has to stop its threats and focus on a political solution.”

Doubt Looms Over Jack Leach for 2nd Test

Leach jarred his left knee while fielding during England’s thrilling 28-run win over India in the series opener at Hyderabad last week…reports Asian Lite News

England’s left-arm spinner Jack Leach is highly doubtful for playing in the second Test against India, starting in Visakhapatnam on Friday, after sitting out the side’s first training session held on Wednesday.

Leach jarred his left knee while fielding during England’s thrilling 28-run win over India in the series opener at Hyderabad last week. He aggravated the injury later on in the same match, bowling with a swollen joint and took out the wicket of Shreyas Iyer in the second innings.

“He’s a tough kid, Leachy, so I’m not sure. You can never really write him off. We’ll see how he pulls up in a couple of days,” said opening batter Zak Crawley to reporters.

Leach’s injury means England may not be able to execute their plan of playing four spinners in Visakhapatnam, with uncapped off-spinner Shoaib Bashir likely to get a debut in case the senior spinner is not fit in time for the second Test.

Bashir has played just six first-class matches and has 10 wickets to his name. He arrived in India during the Hyderabad Test after visa issues owing to his Pakistani heritage forced him to return home to London and get the visa there.

“He’s a great kid, he’s got a lot about him. He knows what he is trying to do with his bowling, and he backs himself. I like that and feel like if he got his chance in this series he would go well,” added Crawley.

Though England have a 1-0 lead in the five-game series, but Crawley, who was a member of the 2021 touring party winning the opening game in Chennai, before suffering a slide to lose the series 3-1, isn’t taking India lightly.

“Whoever they pick, they’re going to be a very good team. They’re a top side in their own conditions. There are four games left and we need to stick to what we do well. Hopefully the results come from there but we’re not getting too far ahead of ourselves. We’re preparing for this one like it’s the first game, we’re staying where our feet are and we’ll see where that takes us.”

India will be missing the services of KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja due to injuries, but Crawley stated England are focused on what they need to go for getting things right in Visakhapatnam.

“We haven’t spoken about that, to be honest. As I said, it sounds a cliche, but we stick to what we do well, we’re not too worried about what they’re doing. Two very good players missing, but I’m sure looking at their depth, they’ve got two very good players coming in. So that won’t change anything for us too much.”

“We just try and play the same, read the conditions on day one and see what happens from then. They’re absolutely a top side in their own conditions. There are four games left, we have got to stick to what we do well and hopefully results come from there,” he said.

Zooom Airline Back in Indian skies

In August last year, the aviation watchdog, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), gave its nod to Zooom airlines to commence commercial passenger operations in India….reports Asian Lite News

Reviving its operations, the domestic carrier Zooom airline started its operations with flight services from Delhi to Ayodhya on Wednesday.

The airline deployed its fleet of Bombardier CRJ200ER aircraft for services on the Delhi-Ayodhya route, which has already emerged as one of India’s most sought-after spiritual tourism hotspots.

In August last year, the aviation watchdog, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), gave its nod to Zooom airlines to commence commercial passenger operations in India.

Zooom airlines or Zexus Air, initially established in April 2013, acquired its first aircraft, a Bombardier CRJ200. However, it only commenced operations in February 2017. Despite its efforts, the airline struggled to draw significant air passenger traffic.

Due to safety concerns, DGCA suspended its air operator certificate in July 2018 for a period exceeding a year.

“We are delighted to announce the relaunch of Zooom, with services connecting Ayodhya and Delhi. Zooom is dedicated to enhancing regional connectivity in India. The new flight services aim to connect people, cultures, and regions to this spiritual hub,” said Zooom’s Chief Executive Officer Atul Gambhir.

“We are witnessing a significant increase in domestic air travel passengers in India. The proliferation of low-cost airline flights, streamlined booking systems, improved customer experience, and flexible airline schedules are key factors contributing to this growth. Zooom will align with these growth elements, enhancing the travel experience and making it more appealing for individuals with a focus on quality improvement,” said Gambhir.

He said that the airline will also persist in its support role, promoting the Government’s Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS-UDAN) by launching additional services focused on the UDAN routes as part of its service revival.

“We are also considering the exploration of new routes and expanding our network to include more tier-2 cities. This will provide passengers with additional travel options, contributing further to the growth of the domestic aviation sector,” said Gambhir.

UP Launches Caravan Tourism

The initiative aims to address accommodation challenges in regions where proper facilities are lacking….reports Asian Lite News

The Uttar Pradesh’s Tourism Department, in partnership with Motohom, has launched Caravan Tourism in the state, signalling a significant move to enhance travel experiences focused on families.

The initiative aims to address accommodation challenges in regions where proper facilities are lacking.

Caravan Tourism is poised to bring a fresh perspective to tourism in Uttar Pradesh, catering specifically to family-oriented travel. The Motorhome Caravan accommodates six to eight people, offering sleeping arrangements for up to six individuals.

The vehicle is well-equipped with two washrooms and cooking facilities, ensuring a comfortable and convenient travel experience. Booking for the Caravan can be made through UP Tourism State Development Corporation Limited.

To mark the launch, a promotional offer allows full-day booking at approximately Rs 35,000. This covers travel up to 350 km, with an additional charge of Rs 150 per kilometre for distances beyond the initial limit.

Tourism Minister Jaiveer Singh expressed hope that the new facility would significantly boost tourism in the state. Acknowledging Uttar Pradesh’s prominent position in domestic tourism, he emphasised the goal of achieving a similar status for foreign tourists.

The introduction of Caravan Tourism underscores the state’s commitment to providing diverse and enriching travel experiences, especially for families, marking a stride towards enhancing tourism in Uttar Pradesh.

Meanwhile, with the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh determined to promote religious tourism, the Prayagraj Mela Authority has decided to offer hygienically cooked food at greatly subsidised rates to pilgrims and saints coming for a holy dip in Sangam.

The Prayagraj Mela Authority will establish and operate a community kitchen and two food distribution centres year-round with a capacity to feed 5,000 devotees a day, said officials.

A proposal in this regard has already been approved by the Prayagraj Mela Authority Board .

Through this kitchen, it is proposed to provide breakfast for Rs 5 and lunch for Rs 10 to the pilgrims.

Following the plan’s approval, the mela authority will now fund a feasibility gap study of the proposal under which the income and expenditure aspects of the initiative will be reviewed after which further action would be taken.

To keep the mela area clean, now under the Solid Waste Management Act a fine of Rs 200 each will be imposed on street vendors who are not using dustbins, on unlicensed shops for not having dustbins and on temporary business owners for the same offence. A provision of imposing a fine of Rs 1,000 for not having proper dustbins at commercially eating joints has also been made by the board.

Divisional commissioner Vijay Vishwas Pant said, “Likewise, under the City Sanitation Plan, the Prayagraj municipal commissioner will carry out micro-management of the initiative by conducting continuous zone wise reviews to ensure proper cleanliness.”

At the same time, the board resolved to ensure benefit to around 3,000 registered boatmen and labourers through Swachh Kumbh Fund under Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Beema Yojna, Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojna, Chief Minister Jan Arogya Abhiyan, Kanya Sumangala Yojna, Education Incentive Scheme for Girls of Safai Workers and boatmen and Shramyogi Maandhan Yojana.

Microsoft Integrates AI Across Tech Stack

Microsoft now has 53,000 Azure AI customers and over one-third are new to Azure over the past 12 months….reports Asian Lite News

Microsoft is integrating the power of AI across the entire data and tech stack, seeing increased usage from AI-first start-ups and some of the world’s largest companies, the company’s Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella has said.

More than 2,30,000 organisations have already used AI capabilities in Power Platform, up over 80 per cent quarter over quarter, and with Copilot Studio, organisations can tailor Copilot for Microsoft 365 or create their own custom Copilots.

“It is already being used by over 10,000 organisations, including An Post, Holland America, PG&E. In just weeks, for example, both PayPal and Tata Digital built copilots to answer common employee queries, increasing productivity and reducing support costs,” Nadella told analysts during the company’s earnings call late on Tuesday.

A growing body of evidence makes clear the role AI will play in transforming work.

“Our own research, as well as external studies, show as much as 70 per cent improvement in productivity, using generative AI for specific work tasks, and overall early Copilot for Microsoft 365 users were 29 per cent faster in the series of tasks, like searching, writing, and summarizing,” Nadella informed.

“We’re also seeing a Copilot ecosystem begin to emerge with ISVs like Atlassian, Mural, and Trello, as well as customers like Air India, Bayer, and Siemens have all built plug-ins for specific lines of business that extend Copilot’s capabilities,” he added.

Microsoft now has 53,000 Azure AI customers and over one-third are new to Azure over the past 12 months.

“Our new models-as-a-service offering makes it easy for developers to use LLMs from our partners, like Cohere, Meta, and Mistral, on Azure without having to manage underlying infrastructure,” said Nadella.

The company has added support for OpenAI’s latest models, including GPT-4 Turbo, GPT-4 with Vision, DALL-E 3, as well as fine-tuning.

“Over half of the Fortune 500 use Azure OpenAI today, including Ally Financial, Coca-Cola, and Rockwell Automation,” he informed.

The company has also introduced Copilot as a stand-alone destination across all browsers and devices, as well as a Copilot app on iOS and Android.

“And just two weeks ago, we introduced Copilot Pro, providing access to the latest models for quick answers and high-quality image creation and access to Copilot for Microsoft 365 personal and family subscribers,” Nadella said.

Microsoft’s Net Income Up 33%

Microsoft posted $62 billion in revenue and a net income of $21.9 billion during the quarter that ended December 31. Revenue was up 18 per cent and net income increased by 33 per cent.

Microsoft completed the acquisition of gaming company Activision Blizzard on October 13, 2023.

Xbox content and services revenue increased 61 per cent, driven by 55 points of net impact from the Activision acquisition.

Microsoft said the net impact from the Activision Blizzard acquisition was just over $2 billion in revenue. Microsoft also laid off 1,900 workers in its gaming division earlier this month — primarily affecting Activision Blizzard employees.

Revenue in productivity and business processes was $19.2 billion and increased 13 per cent for the quarter.

LinkedIn revenue increased 9 per cent. However, devices revenue decreased 9 per cent for the quarter.

“We’ve moved from talking about AI to applying AI at scale,” said Satya Nadella, chairman and CEO of Microsoft. “By infusing AI across every layer of our tech stack, we’re winning new customers and helping drive new benefits and productivity gains across every sector.”

Strong execution by our sales teams and partners drove Microsoft Cloud revenue to $33.7 billion, up 24 per cent year-over-year, added Amy Hood, executive vice president and CFO of Microsoft.

Microsoft 365 Consumer subscribers have now reached 78.4 million, nearly 16 per cent up year-over-year.

Meanwhile, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres received a written statement submitted by the Baloch Human Rights Council (BHRC), highlighting the increasing cases of enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings in Balochistan in recent years.

The statement has been sent online and will be addressed during the 55th session (February 26-April 5) of the UN Human Rights Council.

BHRC has submitted the statement under Agenda Item 4 through the Centre for Gender Justice and Women Empowerment, a non-governmental organization with special consultative status at the UN.

The statement focused on the escalating crisis of enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings in Balochistan, citing the number of cases verified in the year 2023.

In the statement, BHRC stated, “In 2023, 506 individuals were subjected to enforced disappearances in Balochistan. Shockingly, Pakistani security forces extrajudicially killed 47 of the missing persons. The number of forcibly disappeared individuals from January 2022 to December 2022 was 367, indicating a significant increase in such cases last year.”

“The crimes against humanity in Balochistan have deeply impacted the lives of nearly every family. The families of the victims endure the trauma of their members’ disappearances. Furthermore, these families encounter harassment, intimidation, and physical threats or attacks when they report or speak out against enforced disappearances,” it added.

In the statement, the BHRC expressed concern over the treatment of Baloch protesters in Islamabad. It mentioned about the recent public speeches by Pakistan’s caretaker Prime Minister, Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar, labelling victims of enforced disappearances as ‘terrorists’ and threatening those sympathizing with the affected families, underscore Pakistan’s unwillingness to address the issue and its blatant disregard for human rights and international laws, without any fear of accountability.
