Starmer’s journey from lawyer to PM

The married father-of-two is unlike most modern politicians: he had a long and distinguished career before becoming an MP and his views are rooted in pragmatism rather than ideology…reports Asian Lite News

Labour leader Keir Starmer is an ex-human rights lawyer and public prosecutor who will have to focus his relentless work ethic and methodical mind to fixing the country.

If exit polls are confirmed, at 61, Starmer will be the oldest person to become British prime minister in almost half a century — and comes just nine years since he was first elected to parliament.

The married father-of-two is unlike most modern politicians: he had a long and distinguished career before becoming an MP and his views are rooted in pragmatism rather than ideology.

“We must return politics to service,” Starmer said repeatedly during the campaign, promising to put “country first, party second” following 14 chaotic years of Conservative rule under five different prime ministers.

That mantra chimes with supporters’ lauding of him as a managerial safe pair of hands who will approach life in Downing Street the same way he did his legal career: seriously and forensically.

Detractors, though, label him an uninspiring opportunist who regularly shifts position on an issue and who has failed to spell out a clear and defining vision for the country.

Football-mad Starmer, a devoted Arsenal fan, has struggled to shed his public image as buttoned-up and boring and only recently started to appear more at ease in the public spotlight.

Supporters admit that he fails to ooze the charisma of more flashy predecessors like Boris Johnson, but say that therein lies his appeal: a reassuring and strait-laced presence following the turbulent, self-serving years of Tory rule.

With his grey quiff and black-rimmed glasses — Starmer, named after Labour’s founding father Keir Hardie — is also the center-left party’s most working-class leader in decades.

“My dad was a toolmaker, my mum was a nurse,” he tells voters often, countering depictions by opponents that he is the epitome of a smug, liberal, London elite.

Starmer’s purging of left-wingers from his party highlights a ruthless side that has propelled him to Britain’s highest political office, but he is said to be funny in private and loyal to his friends.

He has pledged to maintain his habit of not working after 6:00 p.m. on a Friday to spend time with his wife Victoria, who works as an occupational therapist in the National Health Service, and their two teenage children, who he does not name in public.

“There’s something extraordinary in him still being quite normal,” Starmer’s biographer Tom Baldwin wrote in the Guardian.

Born on September 2, 1962, Keir Rodney Starmer was raised in a cramped, pebbledashed semi-detached house on the outskirts of London by a seriously ill mother and an emotionally distant father.

He had three siblings, one of whom had learning difficulties. His parents were animal lovers who rescued donkeys.

A talented musician, Starmer had violin lessons at school with Norman Cook, the former Housemartins bassist who became DJ Fatboy Slim.

After legal studies at the universities of Leeds and Oxford, Starmer turned his attention to leftist causes, defending trade unions, anti-McDonald’s activists and death row inmates abroad.

He is friends with human rights lawyer Amal Clooney from their time together at the same legal practice and once recounted a boozy lunch he had with her and her Hollywood actor husband George.

In 2003, he began moving toward the establishment, shocking colleagues and friends, first with a job ensuring police in Northern Ireland complied with human rights legislation.

Five years later, he was appointed director of public prosecutions (DPP) for England and Wales when Labour’s Gordon Brown was prime minister.

Between 2008 and 2013, he oversaw the prosecution of MPs for abusing their expenses, journalists for phone-hacking, and young rioters involved in unrest across England.

He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II, but rarely uses the prefix “Sir,” and in 2015 was elected as a member of parliament, representing a seat in left-leaning north London.

Just weeks before he was elected, his mother died of a rare disease of the joints that had left her unable to walk for many years.

Just a year after becoming an MP, Starmer joined a rebellion by Labour lawmakers over radical left-winger Jeremy Corbyn’s perceived lack of leadership during the EU referendum campaign.

It failed, and later that year he rejoined the top team as Labour’s Brexit spokesman, where he remained until succeeding Corbyn after he took the party to its worst defeat since 1935 in the last election five years ago.

Starmer moved the party back to the more electable center ground, purging Corbyn and rooting out anti-Semitism.

Dominic Grieve, who as Conservative attorney-general worked closely with Starmer as DPP, said he “inspires loyalty because he comes across as being so transparently decent and rational.”

“These are quite important features even if you disagree with a policy. And he comes across as man of moderation,” he told The Times.

Nevertheless, the left accuses him of betrayal for dropping a number of pledges he made during his successful leadership campaign, including the scrapping of university tuition fees.

But his successful strategic repositioning of Labour is indicative of a constant throughout his life: a drive to succeed.

“If you’re born without privilege, you don’t have time for messing around,” Starmer once said.

“You don’t walk around problems without fixing them, and you don’t surrender to the instincts of organizations that won’t face up to change.”

UPI Payments Now Available in UAE

Now Indian travelers or NRIs in UAE will make Unified Payments Interface (UPI) payments through QR code through Point of Sale machines….reports Asian Lite News

The Indian Government has been pushing UPI globally for faster digital payments. Now, UPI will be available in the Middle East country UAE as well.

NPCI International Payments Limited has partnered with Network International, a large digital commerce company in the Middle East and Africa for this.

Now Indian travelers or NRIs in UAE will make Unified Payments Interface (UPI) payments through QR code through Point of Sale machines.

NPCI International CEO Ritesh Shukla said that the increasing acceptance of UPI payments among UAE merchants will be convenient not only for Indian travellers, rather, it will promote innovative digital payment solutions at the international level.

According to the NPCI release, “The number of Indian travelers in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is estimated to reach 98 lakh in 2024. Around 53 lakh Indians are likely to reach UAE alone.”

The Government of India, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), and NPCI International are working together to promote UPI on the global platform.

UPI is officially accepted in Nepal, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, UAE, Singapore, France, and Bhutan.

According to NPCI data, the number of transactions on the UPI platform in June was 13.9 billion.

It has seen an increase of 49 per cent on an annual basis.

The reason for the increase in UPI transactions is the linking of RuPay credit card with UPI and the launch of UPI in foreign countries as well.

The transaction volume in June stood at Rs 20.07 lakh crore, 1.9 per cent lower than Rs 20.45 lakh crore in May.

On a YoY basis, the transaction volume surged 36 per cent.

The average daily transaction amount reached Rs 66,903 crore while the average daily transaction count was at 463 million in June. The UPI numbers in the month of May were the highest in terms of value and volume since the UPI came into existence in 2016.

In June, the Immediate Payment Service (IMPS) transaction volume was down by 7 per cent in June at 517 million, as compared to 558 million in May.

Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AePS) was up by 11 per cent in volume to 100 million in June as against 90 million in May and 95 million in April.

Earlier in the day, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) joined Project Nexus with the four ASEAN countries to create a platform to facilitate instantaneous cross-border retail payments.

Nexus, conceptualised by the Innovation Hub of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), aims to connect India’s UPI with the fast payment systems of ASEAN members — Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand.

India’s FMCG Sector Eyes 7-9% Revenue Rise

Higher minimum support prices, and increased government spending on rural infrastructure will also add to rural growth…reports Asian Lite News

The fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector will see a revenue growth of 7-9 per cent in the current fiscal, says rating agency CRISIL in its report. The growth in the sector will be fuelled by higher volume, revival in rural demand and steady urban demand.

The report added that the product realisations are expected to grow modestly with slight increases in key raw material prices for the food and beverages (F&B) segment, while prices for personal care (PC) and home care (HC) segments will remain stable.

The rating agency further added that the Premiumisation and volume growth will expand operating margins by 50-75 basis points to 20-21 per cent, although rising marketing expenses due to intense competition will limit further expansion.

The product realisation combines market requirements, technological capabilities, and resources to define new product designs and the requisite manufacturing and field support processes.

The rating agency’s studied 77 FMCG companies, representing about a third of the sector’s Rs 5.6 lakh crore revenue last fiscal, highlights that the F&B segment accounts for nearly half the sector revenue, with Home and Personal Care segments, each accounting for a quarter.

Supported by better monsoon, rural consumer volume growth is expected at 6-7 per cent in fiscal 2025. Higher minimum support prices, and increased government spending on rural infrastructure will also add to rural growth.

Urban consumer volume growth is projected to remain steady at 7-8 per cent, driven by rising disposable incomes and a focus on premium products.

Expressing optimism on the overall outlook, the report added that the revenue will benefit from modest realisation growth of 1-2 per cent and a focus on enhancing premium offerings.

The F&B segment is expected to grow 8-9 per cent, the PC segment 6-7 per cent, and the HC segment 8-9 per cent saysAditya Jhaver, Director, CRISIL Ratings,”We expect volume growth of 6-7 per cent in fiscal 2025 from the rural consumers (40 per cent of overall revenue), supported by expectation of better monsoon benefitting agricultural production, and hike in minimum support price supporting farm incomes. Higher government spending on rural infrastructure, primarily through Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana-Grameen (PMAY-G) for affordable houses, will aid higher savings in rural India, supporting their ability to spend more.”(ANI)

Women Entrepreneurs Get Govt Boost

Union Minister Piyush Goyal announced that women entrepreneurs will get an 80% fee discount and MSMEs will get a 50% discount on PESO licences….reports Asian Lite News

Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, has announced 80 per cent concession for women entrepreneurs and 50 per cent for MSMEs in fees for licences granted by the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO), according to an official statement issued on Thursday.

Accordingly, the Minister has directed PESO to formulate guidelines in consultation with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) for creating a template of safety measures allowing retail outlets of petrol pumps to function in cases where there is habitation within 30-50 metres.

Piyush Goyal also said that QR code for cylinders is incorporated in the draft Gas Cylinders Rules and a final notification will be out soon.

He added that a committee will be formed to study if a licence for explosives, transport and manufacturing can be given for 10 years. A committee will also examine the issue regarding increasing the validity of licence to 10 years as all licences except for explosives are given for 10 years.

To further streamline processes, the Minister said efforts must be made to involve third-party inspection agencies in more areas, adding that online permission modules will be developed by PESO for a few areas which are yet offline.

Goyal also directed that the process for filling up vacancies in PESO must be expedited.

Petrol pump licences are issued in Form XIV of Petroleum Rules 2002 whereas licence for CNG dispensing facilities within petroleum retail outlets are issued in Form G of Gas Cylinders Rules.

As both the licences are under different Rules and Acts, amendments in the licence in Form XIV are also required to be made after the grant of licence for CNG facilities in the same petrol pump.

This amendment will be dispensed with by making required changes in the modules. This will reduce the compliance burden and the workload of PESO.

Minister Goyal chaired a stakeholder consultation on Thursday to get feedback from petroleum, explosives, fireworks and other related industry leaders, aimed at enhancing efficiency in the functioning of PESO.

Goyal said the compliance of the petroleum and explosives industry must be balanced with public safety.

Champions Return

Top-most of those cherished moments will be when Rohit Sharma walked hand-in-hand with Virat Kohli to the crowd near the stands as if saying thanks on their behalf as they retire from the game’s shortest format…reports Asian Lite News

Cheered on by thousands of fans assembled inside the Wankhede Stadium and by the huge crowd that had turned the Marine Drive into a sea of people, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) felicitated the Champions as they returned home with the trophy. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, the two elder statesmen of the Indian team, articulated the feelings of players to the scores of fans across the country when they told the huge gathering how happy and proud they were feeling after bringing the trophy back home.

“This trophy is for the entire nation, along with all the players that have represented the country,” said India captain Rohit Sharma as he along with his teammates was accorded grand felicitations by a jam-packed Wankhede Stadium at a function organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Thursday. The BCCI handed over to the team and the support staff a cheque of Rs 125 crore that it had announced as a reward for their victory.

“Since the time we have come to India, it has been wonderful. The reception we have got has been wonderful. The trophy belongs to everyone, to the players, the support staff, the BCCI officials, along with the people who have wanted us to win the World Cup, this trophy belongs to them,” said Rohit as he expressed his emotions and his teammates at the Wankhede Stadium.

The stadium was packed to the rafters since 3 pm as they waited for the team to arrive from Delhi, travel from the Mumbai airport to Nariman Point for a victory parade over an open-top bus along the Marine Drive, crawling through a sea of humanity which delayed the function by a couple of hours.

Neither the players nor the waiting crowd was bothered by the delay despite first being roasted by the afternoon sun and then soaked by a drizzle. While the crowd cheered them on, the players ran into the crowd, danced along with the supporters, cheered each other, and thanked the fans as they expressed their delight at being able to watch the demigods.

“Bringing this World Cup to the country means a lot to us. We got a solid reception, along with BCCI and my teammates, I thank the fans for their support,” said Rohit saying every World Cup triumph is different and the last three that have come during his career were each special in its own way.

“To bring the World Cup to the venue where India won the 2011 ODI World Cup is very special for us. I would not single out some particular players but all of them played their role in this victory,” said Rohit, who hailed his teammates Suryakumar Yadav, for his sensational catch off David Miller in the final at Bridgetown, Barbados, and Hardik Pandya for bowling that final over that sealed victory for India. Rohit’s praise for Hardik at the Wankhede was special considering the kind of things they had to face after the allrounder from Gujarat had replaced the local boy as captain of the IPL side Mumbai Indians.

Bumrah, once in a generation player, says Kohli

While Rohit Sharma had words of praise for Surya and Hardik, Virat Kohli, who like Rohit has announced his retirement from T20I cricket, expressed some special words for Jasprit Bumrah for how the pacer extricated the Indian team from difficult situations on several occasions during the World Cup.

He agreed that Bumrah should be declared a “national treasure” for the way he saved the team from difficult situations during the World Cup. Bumrah was declared the Player of the Tournament for his heroics and received a special round of applause from the crowd as Kohli urged them on.

“At one time I also felt that ‘man is it going to slip away again’. But what happened in those five overs, two of which were bowled by Jasprit Bumrah was truly, truly special. What I would like everyone is to applaud a guy who brought us back into games, again and again in this tournament,” said Kohli.

“We want him to continue playing for India as long as he can. He is once in a generation player,” said Kohli of Bumrah. He also made a special mention of head coach Rahul Dravid and the support staff for helping and guiding the team to triumph.

Bumrah on his part said that having his toddler son along with him at the Kensington Oval made it special for him, laughing off suggestions that he may have to encounter a petition signed by a billion people urging him not to quit the game.

While there were numerous moments for the fans to score in their memory for eternity, three would find a place in everyone’s favourite moments of the evening.

Top-most of those cherished moments will be when Rohit Sharma walked hand-in-hand with Virat Kohli to the crowd near the stands as if saying thanks on their behalf as they retire from the game’s shortest format.

The second moment that will stay forever in people’s minds will be Hardik Pandya getting cheered vociferously at the same ground where Mumbaikars booed him as captain of Mumbai Indians. And then there was the iconic moment of all the players dancing together as they went on a lap of honour around the stadium, reminding people of the similar scenes at the same venue in 2011 when Kohli was among those who lifted Sachin Tendulkar on their shoulder around the ground.

On Thursday, there were no such scenes even though the two oldest members of the team and the most loved ones were retiring from this format of the game. However, there was no doubt in the minds of the gathered about the yeomen service both of them have rendered to the country

SCS tensions: A revisit to China’s old tactics

Experts suggest that China’s provocative actions in the South China Sea are not only acts of aggression but also attempts to drag the US to the brink of war….reports Asian Lite News

Chinese coast guards engaged in a confrontation with Filipino sailors in waters controlled by the Philippines while these boats were transporting daily supplies to the Philippine military. According to visuals released by the Philippine military, the behaviour of the Chinese coast guards resembled that of non-state actors such as pirates rather than a state military.

The disturbing footage shows three Chinese boats aggressively attempting to overtake the Filipino vessel. During the ensuing scuffle, Chinese coast guards brandished knives and used strobe lights to obscure the cameras recording the aggression.

They rammed the Filipino boat, seizing and destroying essential supplies meant for the troops. One Filipino sailor lost his thumb in the attack.

These visuals are reminiscent of Chinese aggression in disputed territories, similar to the Galwan Valley clash during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic, which resulted in the deaths of 20 Indian soldiers and 40 Chinese soldiers.

At the core of this dispute are China’s erratic claims over the South China Sea.

What is at the heart of the Dispute

The South China Sea, located between the Indian and Pacific Oceans, is a shared maritime area involving China, Japan, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, and other Southeast Asian nations. China arbitrarily claims the largest portion of this maritime space.

The South China Sea is globally significant, with around $3 trillion of international trade passing through it annually.

Additionally, it is rich in natural resources, including substantial oil and gas reserves.

As China ascended to economic power, it began asserting its erratic claims over territories already historically demarcated by other South-East Asian states.

In 2016, due to these contentious claims, the Philippines initiated an international arbitration action against China under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

The Permanent Court of Arbitration ruled in favour of the Philippines, finding no legal basis for China’s claims.

China, however, responded negatively to the arbitration ruling and refused to accept the binding decision. In response to China’s aggressive stance in the region, major Southeast Asian powers, including the ten ASEAN members, Japan, India, Australia, and the US, have attempted to establish mechanisms for a free and open Indo-Pacific, which China opposes.

The recent confrontation between the Philippines and China in the South China Sea is not an isolated incident.

To strengthen its claim, the Philippines positioned a World War II-era ship, the Sierra Madre, on the partially submerged Second Thomas Shoal in 1999, stationing marines on it.

Over the past 25 years, the Philippines has consistently supplied essentials to the ship.

In 2021, China typically deployed only one ship during these resupply missions, but by 2023, this number had increased to an average of 14 ships. In one operation in December of last year, researchers identified at least 46 Chinese ships monitoring the second Thomas Shoal.

China continually provoking Philippines

The June 2024 incident is one of many aggressive acts by China in recent years, each escalating in provocation.

For instance, on April 30 this year, near the contentious Scarborough Shoal, Chinese coast guard ships fired water cannons at two Philippine patrol boats. Philippine officials indicated that water cannons could damage their ship engines or even capsize smaller vessels.

A similar incident occurred in March when Chinese coast guards fired water cannons near Philippine boats, injuring several crew members.

The Philippines has a longstanding security treaty with the US, one of the oldest such agreements between the US and its Asian allies.

This treaty stipulates that the US will assist the Philippines in the event of an attack or war-like situation. The Philippines has clarified that this protection extends to attacks on its coast guard.

Experts suggest that China’s provocative actions in the South China Sea are not only acts of aggression but also attempts to drag the US to the brink of war.

In his keynote speech at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore this year, Philippine President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. declared that any fatalities resulting from the ongoing standoff with Beijing in the South China Sea would be “very, very close to… an act of war”.

Responding to a question on US-Philippines mutual defense, he asserted that “we would have crossed the Rubicon” in such a scenario.

Conclusion

China has actively provoked nearly all of its neighbours, with the exception of Russia. Central to its aggression is the desire for hegemonic and authoritarian dominance in Asia.

China has consistently antagonised its neighbours, including India, Japan, Vietnam, and now the Philippines.

This pattern has intensified since Xi Jinping ascended to power. Experts describe this behaviour as ‘bluff brinkmanship’, where China’s grey zone military maneouvers, whether in the Galwan Valley or the South China Sea, have jeopardised regional security to assert its dominance.

Similar tactics were evident in the recent clash involving knives and fists between China and the Philippines.

Should a soldier use a lethal weapon next time, it could escalate into full-scale war.

Notably, post-pandemic, China’s economy is faltering, causing anxiety for Xi Jinping’s authoritarian regime, which may explain the surge in skirmishes over the past decade.

The international community must address China’s ongoing military escalation, while the threatened powers need to develop a collective strategy to counter its aggression.

‘Philippines won’t get intimidated’

Amid China’s growing aggression, Philippines’ President Ferdinand Marcos Jr has said that the nation would not be intimidated by Beijing’s expansionist acts.

His remarks came at the headquarters of Philippine South China Sea forces at Palawan island.

According to the Philippine President “In defending the nation, we stay true to our Filipino nature that we would like to settle all these issues peacefully.”

During the visit to the headquarters, Marcos awarded medals to 80 sailors who took part in the resupply mission, and urged the sailors to continue defending their nation despite the situation being “dangerous”.

Quoting Marcos as saying, Al Jazeera reported that the Philippines will continue to exercise its freedom.

“We will never be intimidated or oppressed by anyone. Continue to exercise our freedoms and rights in support of our national interest, in accordance with international law,” Marcos said.

The statement came as a response towards the recent incident of a violent clash between Chinese and Philippine sailors near the Second Thomas Shoal about 200 km away from Palawan island.

During that incident, the Chinese forces injured Filipino navy personnel and damaged at least two military boats in the South China Sea.

Additionally, the Filipino sailors also accused Chinese coastguards of stealing and damaging their equipment, the Al Jazeera report claimed.

Previously, the Philippines News Agency (PNA) had reported that the Armed Forces of the Philippines had rejected China’s allegation that a Philippines ship illegally entered its waters and collided with one of its coast guard vessels, terming it “deceptive and misleading of the China Coast Guard.

In a message to reporters, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) public affairs office chief Col. Xerxes Trinidad stated, “The AFP will not discuss operational details on the legal humanitarian rotation and resupply mission at Ayungin Shoal, which is well within our EEZ (exclusive economic zone).” Trinidad added, “We will not dignify the deceptive and misleading claims of the China Coast Guard (CCG),” PNA reported.

The AFP official stressed that the presence and actions of Chinese vessels within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ) that infringe on Manila’s sovereignty and sovereign rights remain the main issue.

Trinidad said that the China Coast Guard’s continued aggressive actions escalated tensions in the region, according to PNA

The statement of the Armed Forces of the Philippines came after the China Coast Guard (CCG) claimed that a Philippine replenishment ship illegally entered waters near Ren’ai Reef (Chinese name of Ayungin Shoal) on Monday last week, forcing them to take appropriate actions.

Notably, Ayungin Shoal is a submerged reef in the Spratlys Islands in the South China Sea (SCS). The BRP Sierra Madre, which is considered an outpost of the Philippine Navy, has been grounded in Ayungin since 1999. (ANI)

Journalists move Lahore HC against Punjab Defamation Act

Journalists and rights bodies, including those based internationally have expressed their opposition to the law…reports Asian Lite News

The senior journalists on Wednesday approached the Lahore High Court (LHC) against the Punjab Defamation Act, 2024, after the provincial assembly passed the law amid the strong protest from the opposition members and media fraternity in May this year, Pakistan-based Geo News reported.

The petitioners requested the court to declare the Punjab Defamation Act, 2024, “void ab initio” and of no legal effect. The decision of journalists comes after the Punjab Assembly on May 20 passed the Punjab Defamation Bill, 2024 amid a strong and noisy protest by the opposition on the floor of the assembly.

Meanwhile, journalists and rights bodies, including those based internationally have expressed their opposition to the law, according to Geo News report. Two senior journalists through their lawyer Asad Jamal have filed a petition in the court. Justice Muhammad Amjad Rafiq will hear the petition today.

The petition filed by journalists reads, “The controversial Punjab Act is repugnant to the Defamation Ordinance 2002 which has been provided protection under Article 270AA under the 18th Amendment to the constitution.”

“The Punjab province does not have the legislative competence to enact a law to regulate any aspect of broadcasting through various electronic and digital media including those based on technologies like telegraphs and telephones as well as wireless media and broadcasting and similar other modes of communication,” it further said, according to Geo News report.

The petitioners have challenged the Act passed by the Punjab Assembly mainly on the ground that the core subject matter of the Punjab Defamation Act 2024 is communication or speech through electronic and digital media is beyond the legislative competence of provinces as it falls foul of Article 70 of the Constitution read with item 7 of the Federal Legislative List.

In their petition, the journalists stated that the Act stood in violation of fundamental rights guaranteed in Articles 10A, 18, 19, 19A and 25 of the Constitution, Geo News reported.

The petitioners further said that the Defamation Act aims to stifle free speech and dissent as it has already had a chilling impact on the freedom of speech of journalists due to the punitive and harsh nature of the provisions of the law implemented in the name of preserving privacy and protecting members of society from the unjustified harm caused to the reputation of people.
